THE QUODDY LIGHT Ahhrvan nn Gllann illnttn GI uns Alpes Isl Jlalm Rome wxth her beauty, her glory and her tradrtron has been for many centurres one of the greatest sources of msplratron As we read htstory we Gnd that toward the second century B C she was rapldly becoming the most powerful natlon ID the world In her swxft march in thxs d1rec tion stood only one oostacle It was Car thage who drsputed Rome s approaching sup emacv for Carthage pfev1ous to th1s tlme had acqu1red the leading place among the great natlons of the world And now Carthage was unwlllrng to g1ve up her former glory wxthouta strug gle Her glorles stlll llngered ln he minds and hearts of her c1t1zens They lmgered especrally rn the mmd of one great character Hanmbal who when a mere child was led to the sacred altar at Carthage and there made to swear eternal hatred agamst the Romans Spurred on by thls deed he spent hlS energy preparmg to real1ze the hope plans and amb1t1ons 1nst1lled m h1s heart by the sacred oath he had taken and by the restless Splflt of his warhke genlus At the death of hls father Hanmbal re celved command of the Carthagmx n army He at once began preparatlons for an rn vaston of Italy a task whxch was far hard er than he had ever dreamed but the trxals and hardshxps only made hrm the more determmed to w1n Wlth preparat1ons completed Hannlbal left New Carthage early 1n the sprrng of the year 218 B C w1th an army numb r C159 1ngone hundred thousand men and ln cludmg thtrty seven war elephants H reached the foothxlls of the Alps wlthout much dxfflculty The season was already advanced It was October and snow and rce covered the Ifall From thrs pomt the natlve trrbes attacked them wxth great audacrty and many of Hanmbal s troops were cut off Many more perrshed annd the solltudes of the mountam passes Most of the elephants were prtched from the preclprces and went ro1rmg down head long to the fathomless chasms Many tlmes the men complamed bitter ly of the dangers and hardshlps whrch they back but Hanmbal wlth his wonderful ablhty cheered and encouraged them to keep on with verbal pictures of sunny Italy and the words Trans Alpes est Itaha Beyond the Alps lles Italy the promlsed reward ' At last the snmmxt was gamed and the sh1ver1ng army loomed down Into the haze of the sunny Itallan plains The very sxght spurred them on to fimsh therr march Hannibal induced his men to make the descent of the mountains It was accom phshed only after severe torl and losses When the plams of Italy v. ere reached of the one hundred thousand men wrth whom Hanmbal had begun the passage twenty thousand had survtved the and hardshxps of the march and looked more l1ke phantoms than Yet Hanmbal had reached hrs goal barely perils these men The r ., ' 1? . i .
