1 i ADMINI S TRA T I ON If any man has had his patience, effi- ciency, and foresight thoroughly tested, that man is Mr. H, YV. Matthews, superin- tendent of Lubbock Public Schools, as he has led the most extensive building pro- gram the Lubbock school system has ever experienced. Before becoming superintendent of the Lubbock Public Schools, Mr. Matthews served as principal of Lubbock Senior High School. Now in his eighth year as superintendent, he performs administrative and personnel duties for the schools. Since he became superintendent, nine- teen new rooms have been added to the Senior High School, two new junior high school buildings have been added, one has been remodeled, another is being built, and the number of elementary schools has grown from seven in 1942 to nineteen now. At the same time expansion and remodeling have taken place in all of the old buildings and some of the new. Assisting Mr. Matthews in every way possible is Mr. Ishmael Hill, assistant superintendent and director of elementary education for the Lubbock Public Schools. His quiet manner and wise and impartial judgment are qualities which make him well-fitted for this position in which l1e has served since the fall of 1948. Laying a foundation of concrete experience in public .school work, Mr. Hill .served a great number of years as a classroom teacher in the held of mathematics, having taught in Pampa and Lubbock high schools. From the fall of 1945 until the fall of 1948, Mr. Hill served in the Beau- mont schools and studied in George Peabody College toward the com- pletion of his doctorate. Vforking in close harmony with Mr. Mat- thews and the Board of Education are Mr. Clyde Tatum, president of the board lseatedj, Mr. G. C. Dowell, secretary of the board and chairman of the Athletic Council, and Mr. A. C. jackson, school business manager and employee of the school board.

he famous smile of Mr. Floyd Honey, rincipal, is knpwn throughout Lubbock igh School. Of our sixteen hundred stu- ents, he can probably call about fifty ercent of them by name. During his seven years as princi- al, eight new courses have been added nd much has been done in the advance- ent of lnterscholastic League activities. X lf Miss Dorothy Lomax has pioneered in the fields of publications and of secondary curriculum since her arrival in the Lubbock Public School system in l925. Sponsor of the first Lubbock Senior High School paper, called the Hub Hi-Lights, pioneer sponsor of the annual, Miss Lomax now is the first director of secondary cur- riculum, and numbers among her greatest accomplishments the introduction of defi- nite written courses of study.
