The Staff ofthe 1918 WESTERNER: Seated- left to right: Howard Guthrie, cartoonistg Grace Hawkins, editor-in-chief: Nobia Slagle, athletic editor, Robert Bean, business managerg Mayme Alexander, dramatic editor: Standing--left to right, Leila Roberds, literary editor, Ray Med- lock, joke editor, Ma.ry Bellak, art editor: Howard Medlock, joke editor. Not pictured: Lee Dug- gan, cartoonist. Lubbock High's first yearbook was distributed in 1918. The next was published in 1923, when Ewell Hunt and John Dupree, both of whom are doctors, now, were co-editors. That was the year the Aialanche Publishing Company burned and all the annuals were destroyed. They were to have been distributed on Monday: the wooden building burned on Saturday night. There was just a small class a.t the Central Ward school Kwhere Sears and Roebuck is nowj, but the staff gath- ered up the few color plates that uferen't burned in the fire and started orer again. The annual came out late, and over a year was spent in paying for it. Not another annual was published until 1927. It then came out as a Senior Yearbook, sponsored by Miss Dorothy Lomax, now Director of Secondary Education. The years 1928 and 1929 also boasted annuals. No annuals came out in 1930 and 1931, but in 1932 a small Pictorial Reriew was dis- tributed. Though there was no yearbook in 1933, there has been an annual in Lubbock High School every year since 193-4. Having received high awards each year, the WESTERNER set its pace in 1945-46 and 1946-47, winning the highest award possible in its division-that of All American in the National Scholastic Press Association Contest and first place in Teras among lithographed books in the Texas High School Press Association Contest. Although froni year to year tlze staffs of the yearbooks have been vitally interested in win- ning state and national honors, their primary object has always been to produce WESTERNERS that the students liked. 4 iii li Cent-ral Ward School, in 1918, was the f only school in Lubbock. When the present Junior High School building was con- structed, Central Ward became a grade school, and the new building was used for high school. 2. . 8 . Q.
