Although Lubbock High is fifteen years old, it looks much younger. The students, because of their love of the building, have kept it clean and new-looking. This building is one we can well be proud of when visitors exclaim over its beauty. The All-Westerner boy and girl are elected by a secret ballot vote of the faculty. They are chosen because of their outstanding person- alities, their ability to lead, honesty, loyalty, service, and their gen- eral all-round value to Lubbock High School. Class favorites, too, are elected by secret voting by class members. The Senior class, because of their three years of interest in Lubbock High, are rewarded with the privilege of choosing a favorite boy and girl. The Junior and Sophomore classes choose one favorite each, a boy or a girl. Students in the Who,s - Who section are honored on the basis of their accomplishments, dependability, scholarship, and general out- standing qualities. The teachers choose these students by a secret vote. Eight seniors, six juniors, and four sophomores are elected to this honor. Each class elects a boy and a girl to represent them as their cheer leaders. The six chosen serve the entire school year, especially during the football and basketball seasons at pep rallies and games. l WJ, Q Io s ,, A ' 'N Q ff N -4 fflfx V' V? gk3 i' , Syl K Q KW S' f Q bij L P CQ N fx - 7 QQ I J Ujfv 9 ZXkgXXK l-5 1-MX M R f,....-Q ' 1 jx '22 L, ab! bk 5 .2 ., A1x Q SAS- 4 9 'ff 'f 3 UNO inn ,- ,,W.- Noni? Peppy Charlotte Scoggin is a combination of beauty and personality, rare char- acteristics. Cheering the Westerners on to victory through rain or shine, she has been cheerleader of her class for the last two years. Calm through storm and Chau- cer, witty Oleta Stewart answers telephones, makes up actors, and commands pledges all at once! With a lift of her eyebrows, she can work wonders. What a girl! A hush spreads ooer the auditorium as student-body president Ray Simmons walks on stage. The spon- taneous applause that fol- lows shows the feeling of admiration the student body has for that witty, always-joking 'Simmons' . Oh-oh! Harold Franklin Stony Wall has fallen over again, this time into the midst of a pile of work, which soon melts away from the heat of his ener- getic mind. C , '1 . Work! At this word oioacious, popular Gloria Nooak,s ears prick up, and from then on things fly in the pub office as the 1946 WESTERNEH editor sees that things are properly done. Dependable as the 8:53 o,clock bell, ,lack Alderson -the guy with the engag- ing smile-is called upon to do all sorts of things. Maybe it's his burr haircut that makes him so popular. Red hair and all the vitality that goes with itl' That de- scribes Bo English, a short, cute sophomore. During his short time in L. H. S. Bo has made many friends, who like him for his ever-present smile. Billye Io Stephens, secre- tary of her junior class, is an embodiment of eficien- cy and co-operation. An honor roll student, Billye Io is a member of the Cour- tesy Committee of the Stu- dent Council. Bill Carter, with his friendly grin and happy-go-lucky man- ner, has won the friendship and respect of students and teachers alike. YVhether on the gridiron or in his classes, Billye Io's Ta1fy,' is a valuable asset to Westernerdom. Meradith Smith, or Toodles,,' as her friends know her, is famous for the effective manner in which she gets things done. Her energetic ef- ficiency and gay smile always make her welcome when things need at- tending to. With her musical ability and disarming smile, modest Chloe T. Dawson, known throughout L. H. S. as one of the most ac- tive sophomore members of the Student Council, can always be counted on to carry through her promises. W . - i1ffEEff?:f , ,-fiiigfh 1 2-1.1 .,1ffgu White teeth flash in a quick, charming grin as jim Iohnson undertakes to see that some class member does his job. The victim hasn't a chance against that pleading expression. Brown-haired, grey-eyed, husky-voiced Rita McCau- ley is always speaking to people. Her friendly man- ner and genuine interest in all school actioities make her a familiar personality around L. H. S. Quite an extraordinary boy is Charles Wright. Making and holding his multitude of friends is no push- ooer, as he will testify. He manages to do that and then some without any trouble though. Sparkling smile, quiet- ness of manner, and a mag- netic personality make Bet- ty Lou Cone, or Boo, a favorite with teachers and students alike. Tall, dark, and athletic, Boo enjoys sports and plans modeling for a career. How We're Organized The administration which governs Lubbock Senior High School is made up of the Board of Education, the Faculty, and the Student Council. The Board consists of eight members, including Dr. I . T. Hutchin- son, president, and Mr. A. C. Jackson, business manager. Members are chosen by city election. Every two years, three members are run for election or re-election. There are 57 faculty members in Lubbock High, headed by Mr. R. W. Matthews, superintendent, and Mr. Floyd Honey, principal. These teachers instruct students in some 61 offered courses. The Student Council was set up as a means of offering the student body a way of participating in their own school government. It is composed of a president, vice-president, and secretary plus the officers elected by each of the three classes. The school board is the policy-forming organization of the school system. The superintendent strives at all times to carry out the school board's policies. He works through the faculty to accomplish his pur- poses. While the student council is primarily to offer the student an opportunity of participating in the functions of the school, it also aids the superintendent and faculty in carrying out the policies of the school board. It has been estimated that almost nine-tenths of all Lubbock High's population belong to at least one club. Fifty percent belong to more than one, with some students belonging to as many as five or six. There are twenty organizations in school this year, one international, seven national, and thirteen unailiated. The Quill and Scroll, for students doing exceptional work on THE WESTERNER and WESTERNER WORLD, and in the upper third of their class scholastically, is an international organization for high school journalists. The Girl Reserves, H i-Y, Thespians, N atio, nal Honor Society, T.N.T. Chemistry Club, Future Farmers of America, and the Mary Emma Club, ajiliated with the Future Homemakers of America. V 'K' 'W 1 Y' I Business Cn The Side In the following pages the annual staff has endeavored to portray as faithfully as possible the grand work done by various activities. These extra-curricular activities have played a major part in furthering closer relations between students and teachers. The band, orchestra, and A Cappella choir are musical organizations which, besides giving music lovers a chance to put their talents to good use, obter credits toward graduation. These performing groups entertain the student body in assemblies, and give programs for civic organizations and other groups of Lubbock citizens. The senior girls' ensemble, which does not carry credit toward graduation, also appears on programs at intervals. For practical experience, the distributive education class is held for students who wish to attend school in the mornings and work in the afternoons. The shop course, too, can be put to practical use. Offering experience in the writing and presentation of radio pro- grams, the Westernaire program is given entirely by Lubbock High students. The program, which is presented every Thursday afternoon at 3:45 over K F Y O, emanates from the auditorium. The junior and senior classes annually present class plays for which all budding dramatists are urged to try out. The characters are not graded for their performances, but do receive credit for their work. The principles of journalism are learned and applied by the staffs of the WESTERNER and WESTERNER WORLD, who although they receive no graduation credit for their work, do it for the love of doing it as well as for the journalism they learn in the process. The following activities give every Westerner a chance for a well- rounded schedule. '9 'x 4 '42 Fc sy' 62 : ' A 25, , gf' A' 9 'C f 'Aga Aigino A i 5 f X I f X X' 2 Q M. IKQAW- K,,5 ' A-z:.,.. ? The business staff makes the paper self-supporting by the sale of weekly advertising and by sub- scriptions, which are one dollar per year. The circulation stag has the tremen- dous job of distributing papers to 'the student body, mailing out-of-town sub- scriptions, and exchanging papers with other schools.
