V The fortunes of a school such as ours are not determined by any one man, and yet surely something of the distinctive, unassuming, and inspiring character of Pop Groves has been brought into the spirit and soul of Lubbock High School-something that will sustain it and color its traditions down through the years long after his active labors have ceased. To him, Mr. R. T. Their final selection of one senior boy and one senior girl exemplifies the best of Lub- bock High School's population. Class favorites were chosen through secret ballot by the respective classes. Seniors nominated one boy and one girl whom they considered their best-liked friends. The juniors and Sophomores each chose one student, either a boy or a girl, from their own classes. A list of nominees was made, and, if a student received a majority of votes, he was pronounced elected, if not, a run-of was held. By popular vote of the faculty the Who's Who section was chosen. These students are outstanding in school activities and have many of the qualifications of the All-Westerners. Who's Who faculty members were chosen by the Westerner staff. They left their school, their homes, their friends, and all they knew for a greater cause, the cause of their country. In the following eight pages are pictured a few of the hundreds of ex-Westerners who are now in the service of Uncle Sam. An annual wouldn't be complete without them because it is they who jill our thoughts and our prayers. Many of our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and classmates may return, but many others, no. Theirs was a supreme sacrifice, the sacrifice of life. May it be resolved that they, and others like them, should not have died in vain. 1. Lt. John Franklin Mast 3. 2nd Lt. John D. He has guided the Westerners through two successful seasons and we look forward to many more. The Western- ers have, through their associations with him, come to respect him and regard him as a close friend. 'Q 'my :af , . 11: H .s i Coach Dixie White helped build the '43 Westerners into a fighting ball club. Re- turning from the U. S. Army where he learned the value of spirit, he instilled in the boys the will to win. As line coach, he produced one of the best charging lines in the state. A graduate of Lubbock High, Dixie has earned the respect of all Wes- terners as a coach and a teacher. Joe Cisco Arrington has been greatly appre- ciated by the team. He has spent several hours at the practice Held each afternoon, attending the needs of the team. Business Manager Football Program Chairman Mr. Pinkey Lowrey has long been one of the most popular members of the faculty and has done a wonderful job serving as business manager of the Wes- terners. Leslie Doc Morrisset has also been very help- ful in keeping the players patched up and ready to play. Although Mr. G. E. Dawson's work has been practically unacknowledged, he has been planning programs for Westerner football games since 1935. He manages and arranges the material for these pro- grams and also solicits ads. All Westerners owe Mr. Dawson a vote of thanks for the fine work he has done. g g '11 f N-if J H!f . Season's Review Opening the season against a highly touted Odessa eleven, the Westerners rolled up an impressive 18-6 victory. Next -the Bronc Busters journeyed to San Angelo, only to run up against the soon-to-be state champions, the powerful Bobcats, and met defeat, 40-0. Regain- ing their composure, the Westerners downed the Big Spring Steers in a close and hard-fought game, 7-2. The Lamesa Golden Tornadoes offered little opposition as they bowed under the scoring might of the lads from Lubbock High, 52-0. In the season's thriller in which both teams showed much power and speed, the whistle ended the game with the scoreboard reading Lubbock 19, Temple 13. Pampa was the first district opponent and was the victim of a 12-0 score in a game closer than the score indicated. To avenge a last year's defeat by Brownfield, the Westerners stormed over the Cubs 19-0. Renewing the bitter rivalry between Lubbock and Amarillo, the Western- ers were overcome by the highly versatile attack of the Sandies to the tune of 1,7-0. Closing the season against Plainview, the L.H.S. men sujfered a mental letdown and went down to a stinging 26-0 defeat. Summarizing the season, the Westerners achieved 6 wins against 3 losses in playing a tough schedule. An unidentified Cub is stopped cold at the line by Lokey.
