Elaine Kimbro, a junior from Midland came up with the idea for Agape, the new women’s club. Instead of being another social club, its intentions were much broader, with the emphasis upon service to its members, to LCC and to the Lubbock community at large. Agape’s pledge week was devoted to service projects and devotionals, rather than to the usual pledge activities of the social clubs. Phileo, the new men’s club is fashioned after the same design as Agape. It too 15 service oriented, and 1s a companion club to Agape. The two clubs began the year with a stuffed potato party on September 24, 1984 followed with a joint devotional. Both clubs elected of- ficers and chose sponsors. The membership of both clubs included 31 women in Agape and a sizable number of men in Phileo. Its theme was “Unity in the Church” with Reuel Lemmons, Charles Siburt, Rubel Shelley, and John Whitley, as evening speakers and Art McNeese, Jim Woodroof and Rick Atchley as chapel speakers. Thirteen daily classes were conducted by both men and women for their respective groups. There were thirteen speakers in the Spanish Lectureship that was conducted alongside the English lectures. There were a Ladies Program, panels, and discussions on challenging verses. Some of the special events were con- nected with the evening lectures. A Cappella and Meistersingers sang for the visitors and the band entertained. He is a popular guest at youth rallies, college lectureships, and workshops. These lectures are made possible by generous gifts from a Floydada, Texas couple, J. M. and Mavis Willson, who have endowed more than thirty lecture series on college campuses, in- cluding one at Texas Tech. The lectures are named in honor of Don Morris, long-time president of Abilene Chris- tian University. 171 Coke and Nacho House | and Mexican Fiesta | The Coke and Nacho House on November 16, 1984 was held in the Mabee Student Life Center. The Associates, as they are called, have rendered immeasurable service to the college through their generous gifts. We are grateful for the new floor in the field house, as well as the rest rooms, score boards, and seating. They have com- pletely refurbished the men’s dorm with repairs, paint, new carpet, furniture, and T.V. They have kept Katie Rogers Hall with a nicely furnished parlor. And they have, among many other gifts, built and furnished both the Home Economics building and the Arnett House, which serves as their headquarters for weekly meetings and their two big fund raisers each year. The Gift Fair and the Garage Sale bring in thousands of dollars each time to enable them to keep up the good work. This year the Arnett House was designated as an Historical Landmark by the city of Lubbock. The 69-year old house was built as a wedding gift for Mr. and Mrs. J. Lanham Higginbotham, and in 1918 became the Arnett's residence. Originally located at 1214 Ave. L, the house was given to LCC and was moved to its present location where it serves so many useful functions. ener a —— —— ee 192 Board of Trustees At the Spring Graduation Ceremonies, Lubbock Christian College honored Lennis Baker with the Doctor of Laws degree, the highest honor that the college can bestow. Lennis Baker has been a member of the LCC team since the college was founded in 1957. In 1959 he started serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and served until 1963 when he was chosen to be president of the Board. During his tenure as president he saw LCC grow in size from 468 students to 1,128 students. He helped guide the college through its accreditation to a four-year institution by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. Dr. Baker’s activities have been community-wide. He developed The Baker Company into a large, well-respected business, handling printing, office supplies, furniture rentals, computer sales and a myriad of other related services. He was Lubbock’s Mayor in 1959-60. Congratulations to a friend and a servant!
