THE 1984 EL EXPLORADOR IS PROUDLY DEDICATED TO: We salute Larry, Nell, Daren, Shannon, Bandi, Justin, and Melanie Hays for being a part of our lives at LCC. They have con- tributed to the college with their energy, their spirituality, their positive and pleasant ways, and their overall Christian attitudes. Larry and his wife, Nell, who were high school sweethearts, have been married 19 years and have five children, three boys and two girls. Larry said, ‘All of them are active. I spend my time trying to keep up with them, like a normal father. I go to their con- tests and take part in what they are doing, LARRY HAYS and His FAMILY whatever it is. My goal is to be part of their life.” While Larry Hays is constantly described as honest, he’s also very straightforward. He describes his wife as ‘‘the best thing that’s ever happened to me. She knows when it’s my busy time and she knows how to handle it. It takes a talent to do that.” Larry Hays has almost as much feeling for his baseball teams as he does for his family. Hays has been coach of the baseball teams at LCC for the last 13 years during which time he has averaged 43 victories each year. During the 1983-84 season he saw his tei win the 600th game of his career. The co : against New Mexico State University, a 1 victory, supplied him with his 600th win. | Larry Hays fell in love with baseball a kid when he listened to major league ga on the radio. He played baseball in sc and in college. It is one of his great lovesg} life. He said, “I personally believe t anyone who doesn’t realize his dependen } on God is wrong. If coaching doesn’t teal) you that you’re not the answer nothing elf . will.”’

He served as the founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees of LCC and as an Elder for many years at Broadway Church of Christ and at Greenlawn. He was best known for his personal work in saving souls. Durward Henderson died July 26, 1983 as the result of a fall he suf- fered while painting his house. He was a master repairman and plumber at LCC for many years. His smile is missed. He was the most dependable person to help at any time of the day or night with the most unpleasant tasks. He was a great example. 19
