LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 1984 El Explorador CONTENTS FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS CLUBS ACTIVITIES pln SiR ls Renae ty mar bs ) | Sa Sis soba: saa F F vets Fess Wa si } Pest see a 8 } | FS eldetel 4 , 12 or THE 1984 EL EXPLORADOR IS PROUDLY DEDICATED TO: We salute Larry, Nell, Daren, Shannon, Bandi, Justin, and Melanie Hays for being a part of our lives at LCC. They have con- tributed to the college with their energy, their spirituality, their positive and pleasant ways, and their overall Christian attitudes. Larry and his wife, Nell, who were high school sweethearts, have been married 19 years and have five children, three boys and two girls. Larry said, ‘All of them are active. I spend my time trying to keep up with them, like a normal father. I go to their con- tests and take part in what they are doing, LARRY HAYS and His FAMILY whatever it is. My goal is to be part of their life.” While Larry Hays is constantly described as honest, he’s also very straightforward. He describes his wife as ‘‘the best thing that’s ever happened to me. She knows when it’s my busy time and she knows how to handle it. It takes a talent to do that.” Larry Hays has almost as much feeling for his baseball teams as he does for his family. Hays has been coach of the baseball teams at LCC for the last 13 years during which time he has averaged 43 victories each year. During the 1983-84 season he saw his tei win the 600th game of his career. The co : against New Mexico State University, a 1 victory, supplied him with his 600th win. | Larry Hays fell in love with baseball a kid when he listened to major league ga on the radio. He played baseball in sc and in college. It is one of his great lovesg} life. He said, “I personally believe t anyone who doesn’t realize his dependen } on God is wrong. If coaching doesn’t teal) you that you’re not the answer nothing elf . will.”’ IN MEMORIAM TRACI YOUNG Traci Young was killed in an automobile wreck in Lubbock early in the Fall Semester. She was Presi- dent of LOA social club and a member of the Baseball Belles. We miss her smile and her cheer- ful personality. She has blessed our lives with her energy and spirit. PAUL SHERROD Paul Sherrod died on October 9, 1983. He served as the founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees of LCC and as an Elder for many years at Broadway Church of Christ and at Greenlawn. He was best known for his personal work in saving souls. Durward Henderson died July 26, 1983 as the result of a fall he suf- fered while painting his house. He was a master repairman and plumber at LCC for many years. His smile is missed. He was the most dependable person to help at any time of the day or night with the most unpleasant tasks. He was a great example. 19 20 PRESIDENT LEMLEY Dr. Steven Lemley continues to serve LCC with dignified enthusiasm. His plea- sant ways and his wisdom have brought harmony and progress to our college. He and his wife, Emily, are great assets to their own family, to the school, but also to the greater community of Lubbock and to the church at large. Dr. Lemley speaks for civic clubs, arts groups, church lectureships, college lec- tureships, youth organizations, business groups and social clubs. He is always on the go and is always helping. His involve- ment is always positive and necessary. We salute Dr. and Mrs. Lemley for a job well done, and we wish them continued success. A 2 JOHNSON HALL ASSOCIATES The LCC Associates is a group of ladies across the South Plains of Texas who have supported the college in numerous ways since the beginning. They have conducted a Gift Fair before Christmas each year that raises over $10,000 each time. Their yearly dues, the sale of Associates Cookbooks, a spring garage sale, and a pie booth at the South Plains Fair are other ways the good ladies bring money for their projects on campus. Their refurbishing the men’s dorm was a real blessing this year for the men in Johnson Hall. Ruth Reinsch served as President of the Associates this year. Mol- ly Keener was First V.P. , Jamie Horton, Second V.P., and Emily Lemley, Third WAY. Dickie Hay, Julia Steele, Floyce Preston, Nadienne Cannon, Ruth Garner and Molly Keener Julia Steele, Jamie Horton, Delta Brewer, Altha Mack, Shirley Thompson, and Mary Tanner. 21 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Members Lennis Baker Don Baldridge William Banowsky Joe Barnett Kyle Bartee Leonard Bartlett Everett Blanton Jack Cardwell Ron Clem J. This year this group grew to a larger number and participated in more activities than ever before. Also, for the first time ever, Freshmen were asked to join this group during the second semester of school. The activities for the Presidents Ambassadors started with a dinner and organizational meeting in September at Dr. Lemley’s home. Some of the major activities of the Am- bassadors was to attend dinners in area towns and recruit students. The Ambassadors went to the following towns: Brownfield, Dumas, Hobbs, Lamesa, Plainview, Roswell, and Tulia. These dinners were arranged by the LCC admissions office. Presidents Ambassadors helped with LCC high school days in both October and February by registering prospective students and giving campus tours. The Ambassadors also dealt with high school students in three other activities. First, the Ambassadors individually arranged ‘‘Ice Cream Sup- pers” in the Sudan, Crosbyton, and Vandelia churches. These events were held after the Sunday evening services. Second, several Ambassadors attended a High School Career Day held at the Lubbock Civic Center and visited with prospective students. Third, the Ambassadors were asked on several occasions to house students visiting on campus. Finally, the Ambassadors were in contact with the LCC Alumni. Approximately thirty-five Ambassadors met with Alumni in October to talk about school activities, discuss recruiting procedures, and conduct campus tours. The Am- bassadors also attended class reunions held in the Spring Semester. The Ambassadors met about once a month to organize activities. This group had a very busy and productive year. The outstanding job performed by this group of students will not only help LCC this year but in the future also. Melisa Tatum and Jana Rogers served as coordinators. STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE Ten LCC Students in Free Enterprise, who completed the fourth year of SIFE on our campus, reached an estimated 400,000 community and area citizens this year through radio and TV spots, billboard signs, newspaper items in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal, computer presentations at the South Plains Mall, the Speakers Bureau, and through cam- pus publications, bulletin boards, and posters. They attended a seminar in Houston, enlis ted 21 Lubbock business and civic leaders for their advisory board, hosted our state representatives on campus, and registered 200 people on campus to vote in this year’s elections. Dick Laird, Sponsor of SIFE, led the students in a practical demonstration of America’s economic system with ‘‘The Chocolate Factory.”’ : a . Itis difficult to change a person’s perception of integrity, especially if one can profit from being so subjective. LCC faces this predicament, considering the impact of the 1983-84 Gourman Report. This report surveys the nations’ colleges and universities to determine which school has the “most” to offer, based upon their number of students, age, endowment, and the ACT and SAT scores of its enrollees. An article in the Avalanche Journal's February 14 issue listed the findings of Dr. Jack Gourman, the author of the report, who teaches political science at California State University at Northridge. According to Gou LCC has the lowest ranking for 1 private colleges. Dr. Lemly spoke candidly abo Gourman investigation: “The rey done by one man witha few assis for the purpose of comm success. The students here at L.C.C. are no different. However, the students in the Business Administration Department have several job opportunities in four different major fields of study. Those majoring in Accounting, can go into private or public accounting firms. Business Administration majors can look forward to professions in Corporate law, Management, Banking, Sales and even ownership of their own businesses. As our society moves toward Hi-Tech, students gifted enough to major in Computer Applications have a bright future ahead of them. These lucky students can find employment as Systems Analysts, Business Managers and Computer Programs. Also students majoring in Secretarial Science can find work as Exeutive secretaries, office managers and other related fields. To assist students in finding potential employment, Dr. Christa Dobbs, Chair person of the Business The LCC newspaper, The Duster was headed this year by editor, Laura Smith. Her co-workers were as follows: Wilhoit, Jame Andrew, Gayle Haley, Tim Perrin, Gene McNeill, Adrian Cal, Laura Green, Suzanne May, Lora Nelson, and Lamar Thompkins. The Sponsor was Dr. Carisse Berryhill. adopting resolutions. Resolutions which were discussed at length included competency testing, prayer in schools, lengthening of the school day and merit pay. LCC did well in being represented on the District and State levels. John Sheppard will serve as the new District President, Betsy Johnson as editor and Administration Department, gets exclusive information from companies in search of future employees. Dr. Dobbs, also uses contacts at Texas Tech University. Dr. Dobbs really cares about finding her students employment. Its. not so much where you stand, but in what direction you are moving. March 9. 1984 Bureau in Washington, comments that “Anyone who would rank big institutions like Michigan over institutions like Swarthmore, Reed and Cacleton Colleges for undergraduate programs simply has no idea what he is doing”. Dr. Lemly went on to criticize Gourman’s criterion for his survey: ‘Based upon size, age, and number of faculty publications, the large university has an edge already, regardless of everything else. Dr. Gourman doesn't know the broad spectrum. He does not consider th2 quality of teaching and the success of an institution’s alumni. It’s ridiculous to line up schools like horses and judge them. It generally takes five years for a team to become competitive, but our team did a fine job this year. Out of 600 points in the contest, Monti Vandiver scored 527, only 43 shy of an All- American rating, Shonnye Autry scored 496 and Paul Thornton scored 499. Kirt Martin is their coach and teacher. Wayne Hinds. The festival began as approximately one hundred exes met for a reception in the Betty Hancock Campus Center. The exes were greeted by Brother Cox and Dr. Hinds along with the present officers of each chorus. Saturday morning a continental breakfast was held in the Moody Lobby. Following the 10:00 devotional, the group arranged themselves in rehearsal formation. At noon they broke for lunch. The reunion was much more than singing. After lunch the present chorus members gave a style show of past chorus uniforms. The grand concert was held at Broadway Church of Christ on Sunday afternoon with a chorus of over 250 voices. For awhile the chorus exes felt as though they had returned to their youth and the present members felt as though they had gone to heaven! 120 JOINT CHORUS A Cappella and Meistersinger choruses begin each school year with a retreat at Ceta Canyon, north of Lubbock where they stay for four days of fun, fellowship, and hard work. The choruses throughout the year join together in a variety of occasions. At special dinners, at the graduation exer- cises, at choral festivals, at Lectureship, at H omecoming Chapel, and at civic func- tions, the choruses blend their voices in praise to the Lord and in encouragement for fellow Christians. At the Christian College Choral festival at Abilene Christian University, at the start of the Spring semester, LCC choruses joined nine other Christian Col- leges in a giant song fest in Cullen Auditorium. Our choruses sang two songs for the group. 121 The Chamber Ensemble consisting of Becca Bryant, Glenn Bowen, Elizabeth Burcham, Ruth Holmes — _ Director, Gary Moyers, Darla Criswell, Arlan Privitt, and Becky Walker, were joined by two Tech Professors, Dr. Kellog and Dr. Stoune, to present their Spring Recital featuring the inauguration of the new Zuckermann French Double Harpsichord, The instrument’s maker, Karl Sund- svold, and the donors, Dr. and Mrs. Harlan Giles, were present at the concert to hear the beautiful music that the students and faculty made. To lessen this fear LCC has a program called Orientation to “orient”’ the student into college. While learning about themselves, and their families, the freshmen meet the peo- ple who are going to be their best friends for life. The whole Freshman class is divided into several “state’’ groups. In these states the incoming students learn about 164 campus policy, how to psyche out a teacher, and directions to the various class buildings on campus. They are in- volved in projects of making posters, discussing fears, problems, and goals, and the final big project — FRESHMAN FOLLIES! Orientation is a very important part of the freshman year and the students remember it always. Scott and Kara, above and Chuck to the right. Patti FRESHMAN FOLLIES Freshman Follies is an annual event put on at the first of the year by the incoming freshmen. It marks the end of a long week of orientation. The hosts and hostesses for the 1983 Freshman Follies were: Chuck Munoz, Scott Robinson, Kara Mills, and Patti Cash. The Follies’ includes songs and skits and is a very memorable event. 165 LECTURESHIP LCC’s Annual Lectureship took place on campus in October, 1983. The theme of this year’s Bible Lectures was “Life in the Spirit” with the Evening Speakers: Darrel Rickard, Jimmy Jividen, Jim Mankin and Ken Dye, and Chapel Speakers: Jerry Lawlis, Randy Fenter, and Mike Myers. The Lectureship included daily classes, the Spanish Lectureship, Ladies Pro- gram, Challenging Verses, Panel Discus- sions, and Special Events. The Special Events were a Ladies’ Day Luncheon in the Greenlawn Fellowship Hall, a Preachers, Elders and Deacons Dinner with Jerry Rushford speakig on the topic, “Like Fire In Dry Stubble,” concerts by the Meistersinger Chorus, the A Cappella Chorus, the Royal Blue Band, and “‘His Image’”’ Singers. An all-singers chorus was conducted in the Broadway Church of Christ. Darrel Rickard 166 THE WILLSON-MORRIS LECTURES NORMAN KEENER The Fall lecturer, Dr. Norman Keener, is from Nashville, Tennessee. He spoke five times on the general topic: ‘“‘The Seasons of Your Life.’ Dr. Keener’s knowledge and expertise in relationship skills and their scriptural foundations made his messages especially relevant. Dr. Keener served at LCC from 1963- 1976 as a teacher and as an ad- ministrator, including being Academic Dean for eight years. It was good to have Dr. Keener return to campus for his messages and to reestablish old ties. Dr. Keener teaches at David Lipscomb College, and he serves as an Elder at the Brentwood Church of Christ. DOUG PARSONS The Spring Lecturer, Doug Parsons, is from Midland. He spoke five times over the two-day period on the subject, ‘‘Pre- sent Tense Christianity.” Students were impressed with his positive approach to life. Doug Parsons presently preaches for the Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland. He is a graduate of Oklahoma Christian College and Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis, Ten- nessee. In addition to preaching, he has served as Chaplain for the Oklahoma State Senate’s 1976 session. He is a member of the National Speakers Association. During his three years at Midland the church has grown from 800 members to 1800. He conducts a weekly TV pro- gram, “The Good Life,” and daily one minute radio spots. 167 YOUTH MINISTERS SEMINAR “The 1983 Youth Ministers Seminar was presented at the Broadway Church of Christ October 17-20.” “Lynn Anderson, pulpit minister for the Highland church in Abilene, Texas, delivered the keynote lesson each day of the seminar. Her class es offered Biblical prin- cipals applied practically to daily circumstances.” “‘Milton Jones serves as preacher for the Northwest Church of Christ in Seattle, Washington. His series of classes “‘Disciplin- ing,” ‘‘The Multiplying Ministry’’, “Disciplining-Levels of Relationships’? were based on his recent book Discipline.”’ “There were many other classes and lec- turers, including Wally Wilkerson, Don Williams, Dick Roly, David Lewis, Randy Gill, Mike Sublett, John Paul Blankenship, Ken Dye, Emily Lemley and Rick Atchley.” “An interesting feature of the seminar was a panel of college students discussing and answering questions based on their in- volvement in the local high school programs and their relationship with their youth ministers and elders.” — from The Duster John Paul Blankenship said “I think | the Youth Ministers Seminar has a strong | effect and is one of the greatest things we _ offer to the youth ministers. It makes them excited in what they are doing and | they learn to appreciate LCC.” “The seminar offers times for relaxing and sharing. There are great oppor-| tunities to learn, study, and grow and challenging thoughts and opinions in order to more clearly see God.” John Paul Blankenship 168 WORLD MISSION WORKSHOP The college World Mission Workshop was conducted on the LCC campus October 21- 23, 1983. About 800 students from across the United States joined LCC students in the inspirational event. Several LCC students worked on various committees to ensure the success of this year’s workshop. The featured speakers for the event were Gary Evans, Hilton Merritt, Milton Jones, Clyde Austin, Glenn Owen, Pat Hile, Carl Mitchell and Earl Edwards. High School Day was also scheduled for the same weekend to make a busy time on campus with lots of visitors to entertain. 169 FALL GRADUATION Thirty-eight graduates participated in the Fall Graduation Exercises, December 9 and 10. Special guests, Milton B. Flet- cher and Louie Welch were the keynote speakers. Fletcher delivered the Bac- calaureate address with Welch the Com- mencement address. Both men were awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from LCC. Among the graduates, seven were recognized for maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. These were Sharon Massey of Odessa, Larry Wilson of Lubbock, Karen Viertal of Albany, Mike Brown of Dumas, Brent Clark of Dumas, Stephanie Estes of Midland, and Susan Miller of San Pablo, California. The Honor Graduate was Quentin Mimms with a perfect 4.0 GPA for four years of study. Graduates and their families were in- vited to a luncheon with faculty and ad- ministrators following commencement. Louie Welch, president and CEO of the Houston Chamber of Commerce and former Houston Mayor and graduate of ACU, issued several challenges to the graduates. He said that we must maintain the freedom of equal opportunity. His concluding challenge was to restore the goodness and greatness to America. Milton Fletcher, president of Michigan Christian College, and native of Hamlin and a graduate of ACU, encouraged the graduates to determine the “‘mission”’ in their lives. He noted that mission is an essential ingredient in every successful venture. 170 Louie Welch The Welches Dr. Milton Fletcher =} @ dv ne) @ Zz a oO ” o Z| iS © be ) 6 12) x o =] - Q Judy McCormick and Janet Harris serve the goodies. Thompkins writes, ‘Instead of examining a historic or global issue, the play deals with the flow of time in a small community. Dr. Williams explains Wilder’s craft by say- ing: ‘The play is a look at life at the turn of the century, which is symbolic of the world. The author shows how life escapes us. We don’t take time for our families, and he points this out particularly well in the final scene when the heroine wishes to leave her grave to relive her 12th bir- thday.’ He went on to note that certain words like ‘thousands’ and ‘millions’ em- phasize the importance of both time and relationships in the play. Considering the small-town background of many of our students, the audience will easily relate to the atmosphere and the message of the play.” Dr. Reed as 1st Dead Man Right: George and Emily 174 John Knox, Stage Manager at the wedding of Emily (Rhonda Whitehead) and George (Mike Giboney). wee a2 5 ines ia ene ee ee Ls Rehearsing with T.
