In May, 189(1 the parish of Most Holy Name of Jesus was established. The original Holy Name of .Jesus church was dedicated on May 29, 1892. It was built entirely of native wood and was of (lothic design. The church was referred to as Little Jesuit and was situated on land which is now the Communications- Music Complex. On May 1, 1911!, the groundbreaking began for the church that we know today as the Most Holy Name of Jesus church. The church was being built with the financial assistance of Kate McDermott in memory of her brother, the late Thomas C. McDermott. The corner- stone was laid on January 2. 1916, but con- struction made slow progress due to World War I. The building was finally dedicated on December 9, 1918. The first Loyola gymnasium, a small wood- en structure, was built facing Freret Street in 1920. In 1923 Loyola added a football stadium which seated several thousand fans. The new oyola Field House was built in 1954 and seat- d over six thousand fans. W - n

Past Reflected In Buildings The spirit engendered by the original Loyola university campus has receded into a cloud of lost time. Those words were written in a past issue of the Maroon and help explain how buildings illustrate changing times on the Loyola cam- pus. Only memories, pictures and printed words remain of land- marks from Loyola ' s past. St. Charles Avenue is registered as ai Historic Landmark and Loyola Uni? versity shares in the long and famous history of The avenue . Three private residences on Marquette Place were purchased in 1925 from the New Orleans Province to be used as dormitories especially for athletes. Beginning with the building nearest the campus, they were named the Texas, the Utah and the Oklahoma. The Texas was the original .Jesuit residence. Later it was used for offices and classrooms and was called Biever Hall. It was razed in 1968. The Reserve Officers Training Corps. (ROTO program was established at Lovola in 1947. In 19,55 the ROTC moved on to Loyola ' s campus, and six one-story army surplus build- ings were added to the campus to provide the extra space needed for returning war veterans. 10

Beginning Loyola ' s Future The science complex was completed in 1969 and named for J. Edgar Monroe. At the pre- sent time Monrt)e Hall contains both offices and classroom space for the science, math- ematics, political science and computer de- partments. Branch Knox Miller Hall was completed in 1973. It was named in honor of the father of Alice J. Miller, friend and benefactor of Loy- ola University. Today Miller Hall houses the college of business, a portion of the library resources, the university archives and the me- dia center. C. T. Vincent The Communications Music Complex was completed in 1983. It is the newest building on the Loyola campus. It houses administrative offices, the Wolf and Maroon Loyola publica- tions, communications and music libraries, WLDC closed-circuit radio studio and Roussel Hall. These are only a portion of the many organizations, functions and classes that are conducted in this the newest of the Loyola University buildings. 12
