Vincent STUDENT LIFE 17 INTRAMURALS 49 CLASSES 59 ORGANIZATIONS 103 FACULTY 125 FACES PLACES 141 ADVERTISERS 175 DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY EDITION 1912-1987 Celebrating A 75th Anniversary: Loyola Is Recognizee! As A Leader In Catholic Education Celebrating seventy-five years of dedication to the pursuit and discovery of truth, Loyola University is recognized as one of the leaders of Catholic education in the South. The Jesuits were among the earli- est settlers of Louisiana and the New Orleans area. As early as 1725, there was a question of opening a Jesuit college in New Orleans. In 1733, Fa- ther de Beaubois, who was in charge of the local Jesuit missions, peti- tioned the French government for a college to be established in New Or- leans. The petition was ignored, and the college was to wait until another century. The Jesuits returned to New Or- leans in 1847 when the charter of the province was given. This charter, known as the Societe Catholique d ' Education Religieuse et Litteraire was expanded March 6, 1856 by an amendment which empowered the corporation to confer literary hon- ors, degrees, and diplomas. This resulted in a college of liberal arts and sciences known as Immacu- late Conception, to which a prepara- tory school was attached. Popularly known as the Jesus School, it was located on Baronne and Common Streets in downtown New Orleans. The first classes were held February 1, 1849, with a faculty of seven. The system of studies followed the Ratio Studiorum of the Jesuits which em- phasized philosophy and the classics. As the city grew, so did Jesuit edu- cation. Foreseeing the development of a new parish, the Reverend John O ' Shanahan, S.J., superior of the southern Jesuits, purchased the tract of land opposite Audubon Park of St. Charles Ave. in 1889. A wooden church was erected May 29, 1892, by lay brothers of the New Orleans mis- sion skilled in carpentry. The Rever- end John Downey, S.J., was the first pastor and superior of the residence of the Holy Name of Jesus. This church was later dismantled and moved to Westwego. On September 7, 1904, the St. Charles Avenue property became the home of an academy and college, both known as Loyola College, locat- ed at the rear of the church. The plan of studies, administration, and orga- nization of the new school was iden- tical to that of Immaculate Concep- tion. Only one student was classified as a college student, while eight at- tended the academy. Subjects such as Latin, Greek, French, math, history, geography, penmanship, elocution, and religion were taught. The first graduate was Basil R. Beltran, later to become a distinguished Philadelphian physi- cian. In 1907, the Marquette Association for Higher Education, with Mr. B.A. Oxnard as President, was organized for the purpose of establishing a uni- versity from the two colleges. The same group was responsible for the financing of Marquette Hall. On Sep- tember 11, 1911, the colleges of Im- maculate Conception and Loyola were to form a university with all studies taking place at the St. Charles Avenue site. Sixty-nine stu- dents registered when Loyola opened. Early in 1912, the university applied for a charter from the Louisi- ana General Assembly to be recog- nized as a university. The assembly granted the charter first in April, and then gave its final approval on July 10, 1912. Thus, Loyola was autho- rized to grant all university degrees. The class of 1912 did not receive degrees under the charter, because it was not fully approved until the summer after their commencement. The first degrees under the charter were awarded in March, 1913. As a result of the early and complicated evolution of Loyola, she welcomed 1911 and 1912 graduates with char- tered diplomas at the same time. As the diamond anniversary edi- tion of the Wolf is presented, we hope that each student may realize as he walks through Loyola that thousands have trod these same paths before, just as thousands will travel them in the future. Loyolans, this is your heritage. Through Its 75 Years, Loyola Has Seen New Orleans Grow The city of New Orleans beguiles resident and visitor alike. From the French Quarter, with its old brick and plaster buildings with iron-tat- ted balconies and narrow streets, to the new buildings that soar toward the gulf coast sky, this is the essence of our town. We are proud that Loy- ola University, with its students and staff, represent a part of this New Orlean ' s heritage. ABOVE: A part of the New Orleans transit system is the wonderful, wooden-seated, clanging streetcar that travels the city ' s last trolley line. Streetcars run daily past the Loy- ola campus, up famous St. Charles Avenue. The line was built in 183.5. ABOVE RIGHT: Almost anywhere you care to wander in New Orleans you will find the excitement of the shops and stores. Jax ' s is no exception. It is a popular spot for local resi dents as well as tourists and visitors. RIGHT: The French Quarter, or Vieux Carre, is seventy blocks between Canal Street, Ram- part Street, Esplanade Avenue and the river. It formed the original settlement of New Or- leans. In many ways the French Quarter is still the true heart of the city, not only because of its historical nature, but also because it is still very much alive. TOP: Of all the mirrors of New Orlean ' s tradi- tions and character, perhaps, none is so reveal- ing as the city ' s fabulous food. Beignet ' s are square, fluffy, doughnut-like pastries, copious- ly covered with powdered sugar. ABOVE LEFT: The Superdome is a multi- purpose center designed to accomodate sport- ing events, trade shows, concerts and conven- tions. It is one of the largest indoor stadiums in the United States. The Natchez tours the Crescent City as it cruises up and down the Mississippi River. ABOVE: A New Orleans tradition since 1948, the Lucky Dogs stands are familiar sights in the local area. Friendly vender ' s are eager to greet customers. Our Presidential Heritage Albert Biever, S.J. 1904-1913 Legend has it that Rev. William Powers, S.J., then superior of the Je- suit province that included New Or- leans, summoned Rev. Albert Biever, S.J., gave him a dime for car fare, and sent him uptown to establish a uni- versity. Later that same year, 1904, the first students of Loyola college registered. By 1906, the college had grown. Father Biever called a Catholic men ' s conference to raise funds for a new building, which developed into Marquette Hall. Loyola merged with another local Jesuit college and be- came a university. Loyola applied to the Louisiana General Assembly for formal recog- nition as a university. Upon hearing rumors that some assemblymen thought the Jesuits were incapable of conducting a university. Father Biever himself delivered a rousing speech in their favor. The sun does not set on any part of the universe i n which there is not a Jesuit universi- ty, he declared. He must have con- vinced the assembly, for Loyola was authorized to grant university de- grees in July of 1912. Father Biever became the first president of Loyola, His years of ef- fort and dedication helped make the Jesuit dream of a university in New Orleans a reality. James C. Carter, S.J. 1974-Present Father James Carter, S.J., the cur- rent president of Loyola, was born in New York City and was ordained as a priest at Woodstock College, MD in 1958. He joined the Loyola University staff in 1960 as an assistant professor of Physics. In 1967 he became an as- sociate professor of Physics. From 1968-1970 he served as the director of education, for the New Orleans prov- ince of the Society of Jesus. He be- came the academic vice-president for the university in 1970 and remained in that position until 1974 when he became the current president of Loy- ola university. He received a BS degree in Physics from Spring Hill College in 1952; a MS from Fordham University in 1953, also in Physics; STL in theol- ogy from Woodstock College in 1959 and a PhD in physics from the Catholic University of America in 1956. Father Carter has seen just about as many changes at Loyola as Father Biever did when the school was young. Since assuming the office in 1974, Father Carter has busied him- self with the changes necessary to take Loyola into the 21st century. Alphonse E. Kennelly, S.J. 1970-1974 Loyola ' s History Today Past decades of Loyola history are reflected in the buildings throughout the campus. Reflections of the past combined with modern architecture help create the imprint of our ever changing time. Each building, with its history and style combine to make Loyola University unique among urban campuses. C, T Vincent Marquette Hall is the oldest building on the present campus. Built in 1910-1911, it is named in honor of Jacques Marquette, a mis- sionary and explorer. It houses the adminis- trative offices, including the office of the president. Classes are conducted in the build- ing and the Marquette Theatre is used by stu- dents and faculty. Bobet Hall was built in honor of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Bobet, donors of library equipment, stacks and books. The building was begun in 1923 and completed in 1924. Today, it is the C. T. Vincent College of Arts and Science. Common curricu- lum classes are also conducted in Bobet Hall. In September, 1947, a glorified temporary building was built on campus to serve as the College of Business Administration until the university outgrew it. The building was named for Mrs. Olive A. Stallings in 1955. Mrs. Stall- ings had contributed a vast amount of money to Loyola. At the present time the city college offices are in Stallings, and also classes are conducted there. C. T. Vincent C. T. Vincent The library was built in 1950 in honor of Loyola students and alumni who died in World War II. The library provides refuge for students seeking the peaceful atmosphere needed for academic endeavors. It contains 218,631 volumes and 1,864 periodicals. Biever Hall, men ' s residence, was dedicated in 1964. It was named in honor of Albert H. Biever, S. J., first president of Loyola Univer- sity. Biever Hall houses undergraduate men and women. It is a six story residence with a capacity of housing 410 students. Past Reflected In Buildings The spirit engendered by the original Loyola university campus has receded into a cloud of lost time. Those words were written in a past issue of the Maroon and help explain how buildings illustrate changing times on the Loyola cam- pus. Only memories, pictures and printed words remain of land- marks from Loyola ' s past. St. Charles Avenue is registered as ai Historic Landmark and Loyola Uni? versity shares in the long and famous history of The avenue . Three private residences on Marquette Place were purchased in 1925 from the New Orleans Province to be used as dormitories especially for athletes. Beginning with the building nearest the campus, they were named the Texas, the Utah and the Oklahoma. The Texas was the original .Jesuit residence. Later it was used for offices and classrooms and was called Biever Hall. It was razed in 1968. The Reserve Officers Training Corps. (ROTO program was established at Lovola in 1947. In 19,55 the ROTC moved on to Loyola ' s campus, and six one-story army surplus build- ings were added to the campus to provide the extra space needed for returning war veterans. 10 In May, 189(1 the parish of Most Holy Name of Jesus was established. The original Holy Name of .Jesus church was dedicated on May 29, 1892. It was built entirely of native wood and was of (lothic design. The church was referred to as Little Jesuit and was situated on land which is now the Communications- Music Complex. On May 1, 1911!, the groundbreaking began for the church that we know today as the Most Holy Name of Jesus church. The church was being built with the financial assistance of Kate McDermott in memory of her brother, the late Thomas C. McDermott. The corner- stone was laid on January 2. 1916, but con- struction made slow progress due to World War I. The building was finally dedicated on December 9, 1918. The first Loyola gymnasium, a small wood- en structure, was built facing Freret Street in 1920. In 1923 Loyola added a football stadium which seated several thousand fans. The new oyola Field House was built in 1954 and seat- d over six thousand fans. W - n Beginning Loyola ' s Future The science complex was completed in 1969 and named for J. Edgar Monroe. At the pre- sent time Monrt)e Hall contains both offices and classroom space for the science, math- ematics, political science and computer de- partments. Branch Knox Miller Hall was completed in 1973. It was named in honor of the father of Alice J. Miller, friend and benefactor of Loy- ola University. Today Miller Hall houses the college of business, a portion of the library resources, the university archives and the me- dia center. C. T. Vincent The Communications Music Complex was completed in 1983. It is the newest building on the Loyola campus. It houses administrative offices, the Wolf and Maroon Loyola publica- tions, communications and music libraries, WLDC closed-circuit radio studio and Roussel Hall. These are only a portion of the many organizations, functions and classes that are conducted in this the newest of the Loyola University buildings. 12 In 1964. the Danna Center was completed. The center was named tor Dr. Joseph A. Danna. dean of Loyola ' s medical school from 1916 until its closing in 1925. Upon his death in 1955, Dr. Danna left the residue of his estate to Loytjla. The Danna Center is a student ser- vices building and is a popular meeting place for students and faculty alike. C. T, Vincent Buddig Hall, women ' s residence, was dedi- cated in 1966 in honor of Henrietta Buddig Legier, wife of John Legier, friend and bene- factor of Loyola University. Buddig Hall is a twelve story residence with a capacity of ac- commodating 429 women. C. T. Vincent C. T. Vincent 13 A Glimpse Of The Past The pictures on these two pages are a selection from previous issues of the Wolf. They portray scenes from Loyo- la ' s past, including the dental and phar- maceutical labs, faculty and student y,,.. life. 14 Loyola In A Changing World The last seventy-five years have been full of changes for the world, and certainly Loyola is no exception. This is perhaps best illustrated by the coming and goings of the differ- ent academic disciplines that have been offered for study. For example, did you know that from 1917 to 1919 Loyola had a school of Nautical Sci- ences, Marine Architecture, and Ma- rine Engineering? Or about the School of Oratory that existed from 1917 until 1920? For a short time in the same period there were also schools of Mechanics, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Post-Graduate Medicine, and a Wireless Telegraph School. For a time during WW II, there was even a Civilian Pilot Training Program. Today ' s Loyola student that comes to study business or communi- cations might be surprised to learn that some of the school ' s more popu- lar courses of study in the past in- cluded Dentistry, and Pharmacy, both of which lasted quite a long time. The school of Dentistry was not phased out until 1972 and Medi- cal Technology was just closed last year. The ROTC program is being moved to another location. The schools and colleges presently a part of Loyola are the College of Arts and Sciences, which has been around as long as Loyola; the College of Business Administration, which was added in 1947; the School of Law, which was established for the night division in 1914 and the day division in 1925; the College of Mu- sic, started in 1932; and City College, which grew from the school of Com- merce and Finance which was found- ed in 1917. The photos on these two pages are a glimpse into the Loyola of past years ... j 15 Traditions Continue It is with great pleasure that the 1986-87 Wolf yearbook staff has presented a collection of memories and traditions in celebration of the 75th year of Loyola ' s history. It would seem appropriate, after focusing on Loyola ' s past, to present a new beginning, one of many which is a part of Loyola tradition. On March 16, 1987, Margaret Mary Garitty, a 1986 graduate of LSU in petroleum engineering, was married to Anthony Joseph Zelenka, a 1986 graduate of Loyola with a de- gree in management marketing. The ceremony was held in the Holy Name Church. Members of both the bride and grooms families have also been a part of the Loyola family history. Mr. Earl James Garitty Jr., father of the bride, graduated from Loyola in 1947 from the School of Pharmacy. Mr. Daniel Edward Ze- lenka, father of the groom, graduated from Loyola in 1962 from the Dental School The Holy Name of Jesus Church is the facal point of spiritual life on the Loyola campus. It is also the location of many weddings and special school ceremonies. Kurt Coste Photography ru u i_r Student Life Mass Of The Holy Spirit TOP LEFT: Father Carter distributes the Eu- charist. The Mass on the Holy Spirit is one of Loyola ' s most enduring traditions. Held in the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, it allows the universi- ty community a chance to unite and give thanks for another year of qual- ity Catholic education in the south. According to many, it is the best way to get the school year off to a good start. After the ceremony, a boxed lunch picnic was sponsored by Campus Ministry in the Activities Quad. It provided a relaxed setting as the many faculty, staff and students in attendence chatted about plans for the coming school year. This cry echoed through the halls of our uni- versity during the Fall semester as student leaders banned together to encourage participation in all facets of the school by students, faculty and administration. The purpose of this event was to banish apathy and lack of concern, things which can ruin student body spirit. ' k 20 TOP LEFT: A boy and his balloon! In 1972, a feeling of indifference compelled school officials to drop athletics from the university and to re-em- phasize the academic atmosphere. However, for many, the devel- opment of the mind was not enough; the recent resurgence of school spirit has brought basket- ball back to Loyola --- at least on the club level. The first game of club basket- ball was played on October 30, 1986, at the Tulane arena. Over 1,100 fans were in attendance, the majority of whom were sporting the rarely seen school colors of maroon and gold. Students, facul- ty, alumni and staff cheered wild- ly as the Wolfpack defeated Tu- lane 69-61 in an exhilerating con- test. As the 15-man squad of Loyola ' s club basketball team will attest, the Wolfpack is back! The team is coached by Robert Reed and the Rev. Hacker J. Fagot, S.J. Loy- ola students were given a chance to enjoy the mighty Mississippi, and each other, during the Fall Boat Dance aboard the riverboat Presi- dent. The crowd ' s dancing teetered and tossed the steamer as it made its way through the city by night. Judg- ing by the number of exhausted bo- dies making their way back to school from the river, the event was a rous- ing success! The festivities were sponsored jointly by the Student Government Association, Cabra, Buddig and Biever Residence Coun- cils, the Black Student Union, the Panhellenic Council, the Interfrater- nity Council, the International Stu- dent Union and LUCAP. Everyone was treated to a snowfall of about five inches, much to their delight. The snow was actually twenty tons of crushed ice, dumped on the grass in the Activities Quad between Bobet Hall and the Danna Center. It was Winter Wonder- land, a fun-filled afternoon of sno wy games, sponsored by the Stu- dent Union Variety Unlimited com- mittee and Oshman ' s Sporting Goods Stores. Activities included snow limbo and other games. Christmas carols were sung by the Loyola Chorale, Santa Claus made an appearance, and the Loyola Snow Wolf was on hand to pose for photos with students. Eggnog and hot chocolate flowed freely. All of the carefully thought-out plans quickly crumbled, as the snow hit the ground. Students dug in at lightening speed and no one is sure who was the first to begin throwing snowballs. For those who had never before experienced snow, or to those to whom crushed ice was just another Slurpee, it was an intriguing (and chilly) sensation. They soon caught on, and before long joined in, tossing the round, white missiles like everyone else! An attempt was made to start a round of limbo but no progress could be made amid the constant barrage of snow from every con- ceivable direction. The event ' s organizers quickly gave in, resigning themselves to the unorganized aerial warfare that showed no sign of letting up. ABOVE LEFT: Snowballs fly everywhere! RIGHT: Students enjoy a northern winter while in the deep south! 26 Many prospective All-Star pitchers got in their day ' s practice, and there certainly was no shortage of catchers (intentional or other- wise!) on this special day at Loyola. The day ' s battles came to an end only when the ammunition supply began to melt and dinner-time approached. At sunset only a cou- ple of snowbird Yankees remained, and even they soon left, having thrown snowballs to their hearts ' content. Is this kind of question the best way to get to know a person better?! It is if you ' re playing the Dating Game! Loyola students dust- ed off their best lines and took a shot at finding Mr. or Ms. Right in their own edition of the Dating Game held on campus during the fall semester. When asked whether this was an efficient date-getting method, an anonymous bachelor- ette replied, Yes, why not? It is a lot more interesting, too. Undoubt- edly so, but does the type of animal one would like to become really say much about one ' s character? Sure, replied the bachelorette, if they say they want to be a vampire bat, you cross them right off your list! TOP: Alright, David, keep it clean! A rattling streetcar, a brassy jazz band, people enjoying themselves — what else could be more New Orleans? The Loyola SGA provided the atmosphere and our students provided the action. People packed the streetcar for the party, which took place in transit. TOP LEFT: All aboard for the party of the year!! This year, the event was held on a very summery October 3rd. All in attendance were treated to the music of Uptown Sounds, and enjoyed good food, drink, and the company of oth- ers. Sponsors for this year ' s Fallfest were the Loyola Union, Buddig Resi- dence Council, and Miller Beer. A splendid time was guaranteed for all!!!!! The photos on this page show some of the highlights of the Fallfest; Up- VBP town Sounds rocks Loyola, and stu- dents get into the act. V . This was just one of the week- long events which also included: a concert featuring Charmaine Ne- ville, a Tuesday fast, a mass and a Third World Dinner. 34 Father Carter joined Loyola students in support of Hunger Awareness Week. The vast line of students and staff that stretched through the campus symbolized a unity and desire to help those less fortunate. World hun- ger is a serious matter of concern and our Loyola family made a vital contribution to this cause. 35 Toga Party Certainly not the average campus attire! That is what onlookers would say when passing Loyola on March 20th. The Toga dress was part of the TGIF Greek week. As well as providing entertainment for the students, the events of this special week gave these young people oppor- tunity for community involvement. 36 Otis Day Otis Day and the Knights per- formed at the world ' s largest toga party on March 20th, at the TGIF in the quad in honor of Greek week. The concert was sponsored by the Loyola Union ' s Contemporary Sounds Committee. The band was made famous by the movie Animal House . In accordance with the theme, students were asked to wear togas to the TGIF. Students were delighted with the music and personality of Otis Day. Students were some- times participants during the concert and Otis gladly signed autographs. This Greek spon- sored event provided canned food to the New Orleans Food Bank. Canned food was the ad- mission price for the concert. 38 The Otis Day and the Knights concert was the finale to Greek Week. MTV was on campus taping portions of the concert for its music news program. The National Lam- poon was also on campus providing live per- formers and music, movie clips, vintage per- formance clips and Animal House gi- veaways. 39 Santa ' s Calling As the holiday season quickly ap- proaches, the minds of Loyola stu- dents fondly stray to thoughts of Christmas break, Christmas parties, mom ' s home-cooking and Santa Claus. Santa Claus!! Aren ' t college students just a little old to believe in the jolly old man with the long white beard and the twinkle in his eye? Actually, these Loyola students took time to brighten the Christmas sea- son for some boy or girl with a spe- cial call from the grand old man himself. Christmas The joyful festivities of the holiday, the giving and receiving of gifts and the special moments with friends make this the most wonderful time of the year . The Highlight of the activities on the Loyola campus is the annual quad mass. The mass provides each student the opportunity to share the love and unity of the Loyola family collectively, while reflecting inwardly on each individual blessing of today, memory of yesterday and hope for tomorrow. TGIF After an exhausting week of plan- ning, preparation, activities and classes, Loyola students have good reason to be joyful when they hear these four beautiful letters so often said in one breath TGIF . We also thank each organization or group which helped in providing activities for these weekly events. Good friends and good music seem to blend together to make the TGIF time so meaning- ful. 42 iSI H BI Hl. 91 j jL ' m v HnK ' ' f - ' -y 1m- 4A ' ' v JLj f ffl W m - % t l if - Whether TGIF includes just relaxing with a friend or releasing energy in a group athletic event, the time shared together is always spe- cial. 43 Quizbowl Fads come and go and have al- ways been as much a part of Ameri- can history as hot dogs and baseball. Trivia is one of those games that has suddenly become a household word. People meet together in small groups and at parties just to play Trivia . Loyola was no exception as Quizbowl took place during Unionweek . Fraternity and soror- ity students battled for the correct answers and winning scores for their team. Winners received prizes such as bookstore coupons, radios, T.V. ' s and many other prizes. 44 Int ' l Week 3rd World Dinner The third world dinner, sponsored by LUCAP as part of the Hunger Awareness Week, gave Loyola stu- dents the opportunity to gain new knowledge and understanding of countries and people far less fortu- nate than themselves. It also in- creased their awareness of what could be done to help and to take an active part in the plight of their fel- lowman. Through display, pamphlets and education- al material, we gained information about Third World Countries. Through conversa- tion with students and representatives, we were made aware that we are not alone in our fight. 45 Roommate Game One of the most challenging of all college experiences is learning to live with and adjust to a roommate . The Loyola Union ' s Variety Unlim- ited Committee presented The Roommate Game on February 16th in the Wolf Pub. The evening gave opportunity for students to learn just how compatable they have become during the weeks and months since becoming part of the Loyola fam- ily . Joy! Surprise! Embarrassment! Anxiety! are just a few words that describe the students feehngs as they wait for the response of their roommate during the Roommate Game . Students received prizes for their ability to predict accurate answers for their roommates. 46 47 LUCAP Rally LUCAP is an important part of the Loyola community. It began as an underhand of campus ministry and continues to be a valuable part of many support groups in the New Or- leans area. This years LUCAP rally introduced new members to the many contributions the organization ' makes. The New Orleans food bank and the Crescent house for battered women are examples of the many projects LUCAP members are in- volved in. Students make new friends at the annual LU- CAP rally and are introduced to the many activities they can become involved in. 48 ru u Intramurals Ahhh . . . the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! These emotions were very much a part of the Fall Flag Football tournament. Coed, mens, and womens teams met several times weekly in the Residential Life quad and mustered all of the effort and team spirit they could in order to emerge victorious. But, winning isn ' t everything, and even those who did not come out on top admitted that playing flag football was a highlight of their semester. To the winners, congratulatios! Everyone else . . . thanks for participating, and better luck next year! iliS MSL S ax  -J, « TOP RIGHT: Tri Beta quarterback Jim Schott tries to avoid the sack . Basketball Loyola University offers a variety of activities for students who are in- terested in playing sports for recrea- tion as well as for competition. Stu- dents enjoy the physical benefits of systematic practice and games. The thrill of being part of a winning team, or even the disappointment of working together with classmates when your best just hasn ' t been good enough, is all part of the college ex- perience. Intramural basketball pro- vides keen competition for enthusi- astic Loyola students. Mii 2S£lliMHiMliliiil£itSifil 4 - ttf Fresh air, sunshine, team spirit, bases, bats and an over-sized ball can only mean one intramural sport, cabbage ball . This co-educational activity provides hours of recreation and fun for the campus family. This sport is always competitive and is a sure hit each school year at Loy- ola. M Ultimate Frisbee Just ask any of these students, this is the ultimate of all of the intra- mural sports at Loyola. This is Ulti- mate Frisbee . This sport is very much a part of student life on cam- pus. Students enjoy the rugged com- petition, the team spirit generated and the pleasure of participation in this intense out-door sport. nr Classes so JR SR GR L Laura Aaron Louis Adams Millie Adan Julie Alb erstadt Laura August Karina Badillo Emile Bagneris Barbara Baltazar Karen Baiter •Juan Baquerizo Dean Berthelot Maria Bertucci Tracey Blackmon Rebecca Boudreaux Colleen Bovie Ralph Breaux ■Jennifer Broggi Kevin Brouphy Creig Brown Vanessa Brown Katherine Calamari -Jason Caniglia Sontra Carmouche Catherine Carter Nancv Cassell Katherine Cecil Sonya Chamberlain Mary Chapman Toby Cheramie Frank Cisneros 60 GR L SR JR SO Daina Clark Louise Curnay Michelle Crowie Leticia Cuellar Marvalice Cullom Patrick Cusick Fatme Dahrouj Alicia Darensbourg Mary David Laurie Davis Robin Davis Faith Dawson Helina Davries Perret Delapouyade 61 so JR SR GR L Donna Del Balzo Caria DeMatteo Laura DiLorenzo Christopher Doyle Beth Dreiling Alison Ducro Edward Ecker Iftikar El-Hayek Rafael Hernandez de Castro Dianne Fleming Lynn Flowers Kim Forman Michelle Freeman Elizabeth Gallina Stephen Gele ' 62 GR L SR JR SO Christina (lelriist Adele Oranderson Marilyn Grant Karen Greene Brian Grenrood Tiffany Guidry ' Jyoti (iupta Norma Gutierrez Yolanda Hayes Leslie Henry Scott Hoerner Michele Hoke Tony Holiday Tiffany Hughes Abdulnasser Islambouli Sally Iverson Debra Jackson Sheila James Kristine Johnson Michael Kelly Saudia Kelly Vicki Kern Kellie Kieter Michael Kreinest Kerry Lamare James Lamy Dominick Latino Libby Laughlin Andrea LeBoeuf Kristin Lehr 63 so JR SR GR L Renee LeMaire Gerald Lewis Michelle Lima Patrick Long Marcus Lopez Julia Lopiparo Neil Magee Kristina Mallette Lisa Maniscalco Maxie Mann Humberto Marchand Sandy Martin Therese Mattioli Alfredo Mavila Robert McCann Dinah McFarlane Michelle McKinney Carmen McGowin Mark McLean Pashala McPhail Claire McSwain Cyril Melville Susan Meyer Karl Middaugh Anne Miller Lynester Mitchell Francisco Montalvo Thomas Moran Maritza Morell Daphne Naquin 64 GR L SR JR SO - f Teresa Nelson Binh Nguyen Minos Nunez Jr. Dannv O ' Byrne Allen ' O ' Neil Claudia Pacheco Patrice Paloade Gina Pausima Jack Perniciaro Jr. Lisa Petros Michael Petty Candice Pfister Christine Pflug Patrick Phelan Matthew Prusa 65 so JR SR GR L Myra Quails Catherine Rabbitt Angele Ringo Michael Ritz Miguel Roman Dina Roudeze Shana Roussell Shane Runnels Elizabeth Russell Tonya Russell Patry Santurio Cherie Schexnider Amy Schremp Julie Schwarze 66 GR L SR JR SO Nancy Schweitzer Patricia Simmons Mark Smith Daria Sonnier Pamela Stephens Drue Straub Mary Sullivan Elizabeth Swanzy Robert Thomas •Jennifer Thompson Annette Tornello Joseph Trahan John Treiber John Tripp Donesia Turner Mary Vozzola Brian Walch Sunila Walia Eric Wallace III Dwan Ward Elsa Ward Kathy White Lana Wiltz Kimberly Wittmann Marc Wolverson 67 FR 1 SR GR L Finn Ahlberg Sandy Aubert Eugenic Balzac Zuhaira Barghothy Andrea Beamon Diana Bedoya Amy Biddlecomb Bill Borja Gerlda Brown Michelle Brown Jimmy Buffett Claudia Cabrera Maria Cea Connie Chambliss Ann-Marie Cheramie Stephen Chestnut Michele Connolly Mark Conrey II Dianne Cousin Owen Curry Teresa Cvengros Margaret Cvitanovich Bonnie Drury Mohamad El-Rachidi Brian Feehan Juditha Finlandia Colette Frederick Sondi Galanti Paul Gambino Ronald Gonzales 68 GR L SR JR Sleiman Harmouche Wanda Herbert Monique Irvin Rhodesia Jackson Gregory Johnston Ann-Marie Kane Renee Kane Hassan Kesrewan Rita Kuhnell Chip Lanford Charles Lee Faith Lieteau Candy McBride Kelly McNeil Maureen Mercadel Scott Monett Amelia Navarro Thien Nguyen Suzanne Nicoll Angela Odoms Janelle Ogden Remonda Owens Alan Pascal Gilbert Piesker Elena Purrinos Rhina Rey Escalante Sharon Riolo Darrick Rivera Claudia Roche Melissa Rodriguez 69 FR JR SR GR L Laurie Romaine Jeanne Ross Kevin Rouchell Kelly Sherman Julie Smith Theresa Smoot Christopher Stafford Ana Stevens Kerianne Stiegler Jeanne Straub Kieran Taylor Jean Travers Dana Turner Rodrigo Vera Chris Vincent Peter Vizzi Julian Waits Kevin Williams Rickey Williams Troy Williams 70 GR L SR H SO FR Scott Adams Ernestine Anderson Wanda Anderson Joni Andignac Jo-Ann Andres Amanda Anthony Ronald Arboleda Michele Barrere Gene Becker Robert Bell Thomas Bender IV Magda Boiko Robert Broussard Brian Burke Gerald Calogero Michelle Campos Wildarie Carreras David Chimento Theresa Crushshon Robin Daigle Leisha Dickerson Stefanie DiMaggio Leroy Divinity Jr. Lisa Dominique Laura Donnaway Bill Egan Frank Egan Geralyn Farrell Zoila Fernandez Angelle Fournier 71 FR SO 3 SR GR L Laura Frick Rina Garcia Shelisa Gautreaux Stephanie Guice Kottler Haiel Guillorl Joan Guillory Catherine Gunn Eddy Gutierrez Deidra Harris Demetrira Henderson Paul Henry Lindsay Huddleston Anthony Janusa Carolyn Johnson Frank Jones W Alyce Kahn Charmaine Kathmann Craig Kelly 72 GR L SR SO FR Carol Kimme Nadine Lewis Trudy Lewis ( ' ■erald Leydecker Arlene L(int; Graduation festivities began on May 17th with the celebration of Baccalaureate Mass. Families and friends of the Loyola University class of 1987 gathered in the Holy Name Church. These solemn mo- ments provided time for graduates to reminisce about their college exper- iences and quietly reflect on their plans and goals for the future. This visit to the Holy Name Church would be the last for many students, but these moments will remain spe- cial to students, family, faculty and friends. 99 Commencement 100 The seventy-sixth commencement of Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana was held on May 18, 1987, at 3 p.m. in the Municipal Audito- rium. The Most Reverend Philip M. Hannan, M.A., S.T.L., J.C.D., D.D., Archbishop of New Orleans pre- sided. Reverend Ernest J. Burrus, S.J. delivered the address. Confer- ring of degrees was presided over by Reverend James C. Carter, S.J., Ph.D. 101 Loyola University At 75 For 75 years, Loyola University has been a major educational asset for New Orleans, the area and state. Thousands of its alumni have contri- buted immeasurably in numerous fields of endeavor to the welfare of the city, surrounding communities, the state and, indeed, the nation. Loyola turned 75 Wednesday. Spe- cial events in celebration of the anni- versary are planned later this month and this fall. As it enters its 76th year, the Jesu- it university on St. Charles Avenue remains faithful to its original the- ological purpose. At the same time, it has grown more progressive while continuing to emphasize values, eth- ics, and liberal arts. Loyola began in 1877 when a few Jesuit priests operated the college of the Immaculate Conception, a school for boys at Baronne and Common streets. In 1910, that school was con- verted into a high school. Its college department was transferred to Loy- ola College at the university ' s pre- sent location. The St. Charles Avenue site had been chosen six years earlier by Rev. Albert Biever, Loyola ' s founder and first president. In 1912, the college, Loyola has grown into a major university whose accomplishments and quality of edu- cation are widely recognized. Today, Loyola possesses a modern music and communications complex, a new law school campus and a $230 million endowment, which is the lar- gest among the nation ' s 28 Jesuit universities. Meanwhile, the kind of basic liber- al arts curriculum traditionally of- fered by Loyola is gaining new sup- port across the nation. Loyola still requires each student to take at least 60 hours of English, mathematics, science, religious studies and philos- ophy. Loyola ' s enrollment continues to grow. Its enrollment of 5,210 last fall was the largest in its history. Increas- ing numbers of student are taking full advantage of the university ' s lib- eral arts curriculum, working toward degrees in such subjects as English, political science and philosophy. Thus Loyola appears to be well pos- tioned in the mainstream of higher education. For its quality education and rea- sonable tuition, Loyola has achieved national recognition. Because of its substantial endowment, it has been able to keep its tuition slightly lower than the average of other private universities. For three-quarters of a century, Loyola has been one of New Orleans ' most important institutions of high- er education, providing generations of graduates the knowledge to im- prove their lives and contribute to a better world. To the university ' s present ste- wards we offer our gratitude and con- gratulations. Adhering to its motto of strength, unity and action, Loyola ' s oldest so- cial fraternity proved its leadership abilities by the pairticipation of its members in numerous campus orga- nizations and other facets of the Loy- ola community. Beggars demonstrated its initia- tive early on in the school year by hosting the first Inter-Greek and Moderators party with representa- tives and moderators of each Loyola Greek organization in attendance. Throughout the year, members be- longed to organizations such as the SGA, Liaisons, Union, IFC, LUCAP, Wolf yearbook and many others. In the Spring semester, the frater- nity participated in the campus-wide food drive and collected 1,052 food items for the poor and hungry of New Orleans. In addition to these activities. Beg- gars had a full calendar of events in- cluding social functions such as the alumni cocktail, Back to School Blowout, Uncle Sam Jam, Halloween party, Fall Semi-Formal, Christmas cocktail, Bahama Mama, rush barbe- que, rush cocktail, Spring Formal, the 1st annual Maw and Paw Jams party and mixers with Loyola ' s so- rorities. Beggars teams also partici- pated in over ten intramural sports including men ' s flag football and basketball in which Beggars teams finished as runner-ups. The efforts of a strong and success- ful rush led to the induction of 18 new members, each a unique individ- ual who has postively contributed to the fraternity in his own way. The school year was a busy but highly productive one for the frater- nity, and its membership is proud of its accomplishments. Above - Left: Wait ' ll Otis sees us! He loves us!
