CAUkPAIGM 78 FRESHMAN ELECTIONS NOV. I5H6 I0.T.4,. 6,.T.8i YOUR VOTE COUNTS ! WELCONE NE ' K STCDEH ' Good Times, Bad Times: The Freshman Experience Freshman year. Surviving those unavoidable first-year crises makes it quite a challenge, and the first few weeks are usually the roughest. However, the typical trials, traumas, and challenges fac- ing most freshmen are somewhat lessened at Loyola. According to the majority of those interviewed, the re- laxed atmosphere and friendly people made the transi- tion from high school to college much easier. Loyola, being a small college, has a lot of advantages. The pres- sures are a lot less because it ' s much easier to make personal contacts with teachers and students than it would be in a larger university, says Caria Gauthier, a Communications major. Freshman year is perhaps the most intense period of personal growth. You ' re in a totally new, unrestricted environment. Classes are different and much more chal- lenging than in high school. You are your own boss and it ' s totally up to you whether you cut a class, cram the night before a test, or not study at all. No one is checking up on your behavior. You have more freedom as well as more responsibility, which gives you a greater sense of maturity, says Karen Lang. Adds Mary Brennan, You have to take a lot more initiative because there ' s no one hanging over you, telling you what to do. Finally, freshmen share a common bond. Most are exper- iencing similar feelings of fear and uncertainty. Surpris- ingly enough, most college students will look back on their freshman year with pleasure and a certain sense of triumph. 20
