A Time To Learn Each one of you — that is, each one of you that is worth his salt — is struggling with certain questions. You are asking yourselves and perhaps your friends: What is life? What is success? What is happiness? What is good ? And in the dark of the night you are asking yourself: What am I ? What do I want? Where am I going? Those questions you must ask, somehow, sometime; and the answers you find for them will determine largely what you will become and what you will find. Primarily, you have come to college to learn the answers to these questions, and your life depends on the answers. Each one of you will have to reach his own conclusions, since no one can reach them for you. Two thousand years ago, Pilate asked: What is truth? Millions have repeated the question, thousands have striven to answer it — and it remains the enigma of the world. You, too, must strive to answer it. You probably will never succeed, but in striving you will attain something like education; you will learn something like wisdom. Out of the confusion, the contraditions, the eternal mysteris, you will evolve a philosophy of life — and to evolve that philosophy is your primary purpose in coming to college. Leaving it round-shouldered and limping Without too much weight on its ankles Demanding what it may never do. Waiting for what may never be. Missing the eagles gathered on the corner, And cursing the pigeons instead. Who said life should do it all? Love every moment, peace beyond words, A friend who finally understands? Life is a mystery man Making few promises, stumbling in and out, As generous in chance as in careful plans. Death to the architects and calculating builders Who lay foundations! Life is no building, no suble blueprint. It is as unpredictable as clouds. As forgetful as spring rains. Hardly impressed with equality or justice or truth, Willing to ignore my faults and failures ... if I am. James Kavanaugh STUDENT LIFE
