Uuo [aJ 1 1 NEW ORLEANS Every great city is famous for one thing or another. But this city has so many unique attractions, the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras, the Superdome, Creole and French cuisines, and Jazz, the music every- one loves, just to name a few, that it has become one of the tourist capitals of the world. This unique atmosphere coupled with a dose of Southern hospitality gives rise to the saying: You ' ll love New Orleans and she ' ll love you right back. ' ■K . Tl ' -- - M The French Quarter by day and by night is pictured on these pages. At left, world-famous Bourbon Street, above, the changing moods of Jackson Square. MUSIC Music is the universal language. And Jazz appeals to everyone universally. New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz. And it is here, where this music, seeped with tradition, is carried on as the underlying heartbeat of the city. TUT The priceless treasures of Tutankamun vis- ited New Orleans this year. Over a million people crammed their way into the Museum of Art during its five month stay to see the amaz- ingly intact artifacts of the boy King. The long delays in line were well worth the wait. Good music is constantly being performed tiiroughoul the city. At left, Gatcmouth Brown and his fiddle at Rosy ' s. Below, a Jazz Fest band on the Natchez. Pete Fountain at his old club on Bourbon St., a member of the Loyola jazz band performing at a school function. Below left, Randy Newman sings Short People in concert at the Municipal .Auditorium. MARDI GRAS What can be said about Mardi Gras that hasn ' t already been said. Where else but in New Orleans can you walk the streets in the most ridiculous outfit, fight for beads and doubloons, eat and drink enough to make you sick, and still look no different from everyone else around you? On Fat Tuesday, New Orleans is truly the city that care forgot. SPORTS New Orleans is also the site of the Superdome, the world ' s largest indoor sporting arena. Each year the Sugar Bowl Classic is held here and this year was particularly interesting because it pitted Bear Bryant ' s Crimson Tide against Woody Hayes and his Buckeyes. It was Alabama 34, Ohio State 6. In addition. Super Bowl 12 was staged in the Super- dome for the first time. The Orange Crush of Den- ver met the Cowboys of Dallas with Dallas emerg- ing as the winner. And finally, this year marked the reopening of what was once the Loyola Field House. The new Recreation and Intramural Center now provides students with better athletic facilities than ever before. LOYOLA Near the end of St. Charles Ave. by the bend in the river lies Loyola University. It is a school as unique and diversified as the city it resides in. It is in this type of atmosphere that one comes to learn not only of accounting or biology, but of life in general. The following pages portray Loyola Uni- versity during the school year, 1977- 1978. We feel it is a very well-rounded picture. Below, a WLDC interview. At right, Jim Mains judges the Gong Show, a student shooting some pool in the Wolf Den, and three friends share a pizza during lunch. At left, two forms of entertainment at Loyola. Below, a student proofreads his story. bove, lunch in the St. Charles room. At right, a student creates her own ottery. . a. ■5. : m REVEREND JAMES C. CARTER, S.J. PRESIDENT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY 16 Rev. JOHN H. MULLAHY, S.J. June 26, 1914 — May 16, 1978 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with all my heart. Lead me in the path of thy commandments, for I dehght in it. Incline my heart to thy testimonies, and give me life in thy ways. Confirm to thy servant thy promise, which is for those who fear thee. Turn away the reproach which I dread; for thy ordinances are good. Behold, I long for thy precepts; in thy righteousness give me life! I.I I Now we take our time ... so nonchalant, And spend our days so bon vivant. We dress our days in silken robes, The money comes, the money goes . . . We know it ' s all a passing phase. We light our lamps for atmosphere, And hang our hopes on chandeliers. We ' re going wrong, we ' re gaining weight. We ' re sleeping long and far too late. And so it ' s time to change our ways . . . But I ' ve loved these days. Billy Joel 53 W iffm 54 SG A Every year late in the spring semester one can tell when school is about to end by the sudden appear- ance of political banners. This marks the beginning of a week ' s worth of campaigning for SGA hope- fuls. This year Johnny Young was elected President with his running mate, Ed Sollas, capturing the Vice- Presidency. ELECTIONS 55 APRIL EXPO The April Expo was held for the first time this year. Sponsored by WLDC, the Maroon, and the Communica- tions Department as a whole, interest was aroused by the free windsurfing classes, free beer, and free albums that were given away. 56 I , i£ ; .7 57 58 MILITARY BALL The military life is not strictly work. Anon. Those words have been the very backbone of the 1978 yearbook. The 1978 Wolf was definitely worth doing. Yearbooks are momentoes of years that have passed and events that have taken place. Each person only remembers specific things about each year and a yearbook recalls other incidents that were not previously remembered. The yearbooks are still an infant production, here at Loyola, and that in itself causes unforseen difficulties. The students are not very sure how the yearbook will turn out so they are reluctant to buy it or support it. Because of this we have a small staff that is ALMOST unable to meet all of the demands of the yearbook. If all students would help out, just a little, we could put out an even better book which would encourage more people to buy it. Although the year has been difficult, once again, with the help of a small but very hardworking staff the yearbook is here again. We all hope you like it.
