How lengthened this shadow is today may be seen from the following .... When the Society first sow the light of his- tory in 1534, it had seven members, all stationed in one city, Paris .... Today, it has 32,899 members located in 74 nations .... Functioning today throughout the world are Jesuit universities, colleges, high schools, and semi- naries to the number of 5,211 .... Out of every seven missionaries today one is a Jesuit .... Of the Society ' s membership today, one sixth is laboring on the missions in 71 mission territories scattered all over the world .... These missionaries operate 4,000 mission schools, 350 hos- pitals, 16 leprosaria caring for 10,187 lepers .... In the mission lands around the world, one out of every three students receives a Jesuit education, and one out of every eight native seminarists is trained by Jesuits Pope Pius XI declared St. Ignatius heavenly patron of all spiritual exercises. Building on this foundation, his sons have helped develop the retreat movement to a point unparalleled in the Church ' s history. According to the latest data, in one year the Jesuits conducted 19,483 closed retreats, rang- ing from 3 to 30 days, and made by 969,356 persons ....
