AS A POET SAID... Mn Institution is the lengthened St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, died on July 31, 1556 .... This year, 1956, the Society is com- memorating throughout the world the quadricentennial anniversary of his death .... The Society of Jesus is the lengthened shadow of One Man— St. Ignatius .... How lengthened this shadow is today may be seen from the following .... When the Society first sow the light of his- tory in 1534, it had seven members, all stationed in one city, Paris .... Today, it has 32,899 members located in 74 nations .... Functioning today throughout the world are Jesuit universities, colleges, high schools, and semi- naries to the number of 5,211 .... Out of every seven missionaries today one is a Jesuit .... Of the Society ' s membership today, one sixth is laboring on the missions in 71 mission territories scattered all over the world .... These missionaries operate 4,000 mission schools, 350 hos- pitals, 16 leprosaria caring for 10,187 lepers .... In the mission lands around the world, one out of every three students receives a Jesuit education, and one out of every eight native seminarists is trained by Jesuits Pope Pius XI declared St. Ignatius heavenly patron of all spiritual exercises. Building on this foundation, his sons have helped develop the retreat movement to a point unparalleled in the Church ' s history. According to the latest data, in one year the Jesuits conducted 19,483 closed retreats, rang- ing from 3 to 30 days, and made by 969,356 persons .... The Society operates 174 retreat houses, of which 32 are in the United States . . . . Throughout the world, Jesuits are promoting the Sodality of Our Lady and the League of the Sacred Heart. y..-.;- ' . ■• v; ;: jjc .. All over the world men and women who have devotion to him and who have been edu- cated by his followers have honored his memory by holding services in his honor. All three plays were well received and rated fine reviews, especially the lost which was an outstanding achievement in celebration of the Ignatian Year. The Junior Thes- pians also did a good job with their production of The Valiant. The Thespians have succeeded in bringing good theatrical enter- tainment to Loyola and New Orleans. We, of the university, are proud of our Thespians and feel we have the best in acting and directing services in the south. Loyola ' s Denis the Menace is Al! BASKETBALL Despite its 11-14 record during the 1955-56 season, LU ' s var- sity basketball team played a topnotch brand of basketball. The Wolves had to wade through the toughest cage slate in modern history, which included such national powers as the Univeristy 6f San Francisco, unbeaten in two years and NCAA champs twice; and Oklahoma City, Dayton, Cincinnati, Seattle and Xavier of Ohio. Coach Jim McCofferty put his lads in the annual Oklahoma City Invitational Tournament — daddy of all cage tournaments — where LU managed 6 1-2 record. LU ' s biggest win was an upset of the then powerful Bradley Braves during the earlier port of the season. LU won that one, 71 -65. Frisco beat Loyola, 61-43. A lad who could possibly be the greatest eager in Loyola history was uncovered during the past year. He is Pete Gaudin, a 6 ft. 5 in. sophomore forward. Gaudin became the first sopho- more in LU history to score 400 points; he finished seventh in the nation among major college free throw leaders with 130 out of 157 for a .828 average; he led the team in rebounds with 249; in field goal percentages with .431; in total points with 400; and in averages with 16.0 per game. Naturally, Gaudin is considered the lad of the future. Coach -JAMES J. McCAFFERTY Athletic Director FR. J. J. MOLLOY, S.J. Thus the Wolves kept their record intact of never having a losing base- ball season. Actually, Loyola could and probably would have had a better year if Tony Chimento and Butsey Morlas, two top regulars, had not been injured. Morlas spent the entire season as manager. In three previous years, he was one of the Pack ' s best infielders and one of their top hitters. Chimento, injured during the Dixie Classic, played sparingly during the balance of the season. Whatever success the Wolf baseballers man- aged during the year was attributed to the fine hitting of Lee Boudrecux (he hit .426) and the hurling of Charley Gallmann (he had a 5-1 record). Competing in their first baseball tournament, the Orsleymen had a 1-2 record in the annual Dixie Classic, beating Amherst and losing to North Carolina and to Wake Forest, NCAA champs. And it was the talent of performers like seniors Sam Ascani and Erwin Caswell and sophomore Jerry Heap which stood out during a winless season. Ascani, for the second time, was voted as the outstanding fieldman in the Southwestern La. Relays in Lafayette. Caswell ran second behind the fabulous Dave Sime of Duke in the 100- yard-dash at the Florida Relays this spring for his best effort of the year. These two lads, along with Heap, were the big pointmakers for the Wolfpack. Heap, incidentally, set a new record at Florida State in the hurdles event. During ' 56 Coach Buford Boo Jones found that talent alone couldn ' t carry his Wolfpack to successes over the likes of Louisiana State, Florida State and Southwestern La. Institute. The Wolves managed a second in a triangular meet with LSD and Miss. State, however. Again it was largely due to the ef- forts of the big three. T R A C K M E N 240 Top Row: Coach Jones, J. Heap, M.
