P s i d e n t This year, 1950, marks the mid-century of the era which in 1900 was greeted as the greatest, most prosperous and happiest of all centuries. Marred by two world wars and the worst financial depression of all times, the first fifty years of the present century have not measured up to expectations. Our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, has proclaimed this a h oly Year — a time of repentance and prayer. Millions, heeding the Invitation of the hloly Father, are profiting by the hloly Year to increase in holiness. Others are ignoring the call. During the past five decades many men have turned away from religion and God. They sought salvation in science and science is lead- ing them to atomic destruction. They repudiated objective truth, morality, and every vestige of the supernatural and thus engrossed in naturalism they have become slaves to totalitarian governments. If the world is to have peace and prosperity, men must repent their sins and turn to God. One of the objectives of the hloly Year is to lead men in general and each individual in particular to repentance for past sins. The other great objective of the hloly Year is to draw all closer to God by prayer and by a holy life. This, always the high objective of Loyola University, is specially emphasized this year. I am happy to know the Wolf has chosen as its theme the Holy Year. May all people grow in the knowledge and the love and the service of God our Creator and Lord to Whose greater glory Loyola University is dedicated. THOMAS J. SHIELDS, S.J. President.
