Text from Pages 1 - 266 of the 1950 volume:

This, the 1950 Wolf, is dedicated to the HOLY YEAR For from the rising of the sun to the going down. My name is great among the Gentiles, and in every place there is sacrifice, and there is offered to My name a clean oblation: for My name is great among the Gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts. P s i d e n t This year, 1950, marks the mid-century of the era which in 1900 was greeted as the greatest, most prosperous and happiest of all centuries. Marred by two world wars and the worst financial depression of all times, the first fifty years of the present century have not measured up to expectations. Our Holy Father, Pope Pius XII, has proclaimed this a h oly Year — a time of repentance and prayer. Millions, heeding the Invitation of the hloly Father, are profiting by the hloly Year to increase in holiness. Others are ignoring the call. During the past five decades many men have turned away from religion and God. They sought salvation in science and science is lead- ing them to atomic destruction. They repudiated objective truth, morality, and every vestige of the supernatural and thus engrossed in naturalism they have become slaves to totalitarian governments. If the world is to have peace and prosperity, men must repent their sins and turn to God. One of the objectives of the hloly Year is to lead men in general and each individual in particular to repentance for past sins. The other great objective of the hloly Year is to draw all closer to God by prayer and by a holy life. This, always the high objective of Loyola University, is specially emphasized this year. I am happy to know the Wolf has chosen as its theme the Holy Year. May all people grow in the knowledge and the love and the service of God our Creator and Lord to Whose greater glory Loyola University is dedicated. THOMAS J. SHIELDS, S.J. President. STUDENT COUNCIL We are grateful to this year ' s Student Council for re-establishing the Hausmann Trophy Com- petition. The trophy is awarded annually to the class, Freshman or Sophomore, that wins four of the seven athletic or academic events. The spirit and vigor displayed by the two classes mirrored the enthusiasm of the University as a whole. The Student Council sponsors the weekly gym-jams, the Popularity Contest, the campus elec- tions, and the publication of the L book. In addition, the Student Council organizes and co-ordi- nates other campus activities, and acts as a mediator between students and faculty. NFCCS Father Gu+erl, Regional Chaplain, and Daniel Quinn, Regional President, have worked hard dur- ing the past year to extend the influence of the NFCCS. The purpose of this organization is threefold: I) to promote greater unity among Catholic colleges; 2) to make the students aware of national problems and of their own responsibility as Catholics; and, 3) to aid students in war-wrecked countries. Early in the year, a Regional Congress was held at Xavier University. Speakers from the Na- tional Chapter, among them the National President and Chaplain, informed the delegates of the problems now facing the Federation. At this congress a constitution for the Southeastern Region was drawn up. Various events were sponsored periodically through the year by the NFCCS. Sacred hHeart Colleg e of Grand Coteau was the center for an informative International Day and later for an in- spiring program on interracial affairs. The Pan-American Day, held on the Loyola campus, was an outstanding success also. The Interracial Commission cooperated with the Catholic Committee of the South in bringing Bishop Kiwanuka to New Orleans and arranging for him to speak to the students at hloly Name Auditorium, hiere on the campus, a workshop was held to properly instruct new members and officers in their duties and in correct procedures. THE STUDENT RETREAT The annual student retreat is an integral part of the University curriculum here at Loyola, for every student needs the steadying influence of a quiet three-day withdrawal from the cares and troubles of everyday life. During these three days of prayer and meditation under the guidance of a capable retreat master, the student comes closer to God — his creator. In addition, the student has time to reflect on his past life and make plans for improving himself in the future. To Fathers O ' Neil and Curley, we owe many thanks for making our retreats this year so Inter- esting and spiritually profitable. Father O ' Neil, Men ' s retreat master. The student publication, edited and staffed by students of the University, has done its job well by spreading Catholic thought through its editorials and by keeping the student body aware of all activities and events taking place on the campus. To the 1949-1950 editor, Paul Steen, and to his capable helpers we say Thanks a million. In the years since its founding the Maroon has won many honors, local and national. This year the staff entertained high school editors at a buffet supper here at Loyola. This was the first get-together of its kind to be held in New Orleans. THE EDWARD DOUGLASS WHITE DEBATING SOCIETY In spite of its small membership, the Edward Douglass White Society continued to accom- plish its purpose during the session by participa- tion in intercollegiate and Intramural debates. Only one tournament was entered by this year ' s debating team, whose members must necessarily be in the society, and that was the Azalea Tournament at Spring Hill College. In spite of the fact that three of the four members had no prevoius tournament experience, the team was victorious over Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and three other large Universities. The team ' s record stands with six wins against six losses. In additon to the regular meeting debates, one public debate was put on for the student body on the subject: Resolved: That the Student Coun- cil Be Abolished. The society also assisted the Council In putting on the Hausmann Debate. With the closing of the year ' s activities the Society promises to grow and become an even greater credit to the University in the years to come. To the staff of the Wolf, this book connotes days and nights of hard work. To the editorial staff in particular, it meant drawing up the dummies for the various sections, seeing the photographer about re- prints of pictures, visiting the en- graver and printer numerous times, writing script for hours and hours on end, and finally wrapping things up. To the business staff went the problem of raising money to cover the cost of the book, the sending of bills and the attempts to see the ever not present business managers of downtown stores. We of the Wolf staff hope that we have done a good job this year. If the Wolf satisfies you, then we can consider our efforts well repaid. Ernest Doclar, Associate Editor. Dicic Toledano, Art Editor. THE WOLF PACK Although the Wolfpack of 1950 was not a winning team, seldom has more spirit been shown on the hardwood. Coach McCafferty labored under many handicaps, including a lack of height which is regarded by many as a necessity on a successful basketball team. A standout performance of the year was the LSD game, In which the odds were heavily stacked against the Pack, and still the old fight was enough to throw a real scare at the Tigers. The team was sparked by hluey Casteix, whose shooting and general ball-handling was some- times spectacular. Also deserving mention are Carl Lavie, and George Vila. THE WOLF PUPS Pete Finney took over the reins of the Loyola Wolfpups this season and the former ' Pup star took up where former coach Big Jim McCafferty left off. The Wolfpups wound up their I 949-50 cage season with a thrilling 56-55 triumph over the Troop 65 quintet for the 1950 Senior AAU basket- ball championship. The junior Wolves experienced very few losses during the season and entered the AAU play- offs with a very impressive record. In the first round of the AAU championships the Wolfpups barely qualified with a 3-3 record but in the title round, Finney ' s charges came -through with a 5-1 record over such quintet sas the U. S. Engineers, WeDK, the Jewish Community Center, NOAC, and the Troopers. The new AAU champs came through to win the title in a thrilling story-book finish when reserve forward Dave Nastasi looped in a fielder from the side with five seconds to go in the game. Before Nastasi ' s game-winning shot, the ' Pups were trailing 55-54. STARTING TEAM JERRY PELTIER COACH FINNEY gives the know-how. TRACK ELMER GRUNDMEYER The Loyola thinclads ' assault upon the Gulf States Conference track crown fell short by one point as the SLI spikemen nosed out the Pack 72-71 by virtue of their fourth place spot In the mile relays and the Pack quartet came in fifth. It was thrilling meet but the old SLI buga- boo on Loyola prevailed as it has on all athletics in the past two years. The SLI men have held some sort of a jinx on Loyola teams and have beat out the Packmen in three sports for titles. Coach Jim McCafferty ' s squadmen bounced back from their disheartening loss in the GSC to cop the 57th annual Southern AAU track and field championships by the overwhelming score of 146 1 2 points to 101 points for LSU, the nearest competitor. Standout trackmen for Loyola were Elmer Grundmeyer, Ken Leithman, Roland Hymel, Lou hiarth, Ernie Miller, and Maurice Riley. Grundmeyer set a new GSC record in the 220 yard dash as he negotiated the distance in 2 1 .5 to slash a full second off the mark set by SLI ' s Jack Best. Elmer, the Loyola whiz, now holds two GSC records, the 100 yard dash in 9.9 and the 220 mark. Leithman was always counted upon for val- uable second place points In the dashes behind Grundmeyer and the little speedster came through In every meet. Riley showed up well this year in the 440 yard dash. He is devel- oping Into a runner of great promise, hlymel, the freshman pole-vaulter, was a valuable point getter this season as he wound up in the top position In most meets and no lower than 2nd In many meets. Miller was a dependable man in the discus while Hauth was usually relied upon to come through In the javelin. This year marked a new era in Loyola track. Coach McCafferty sent athletes such as Grundmeyer and Leithman to the Texas Re- lays at Austin and the Southern Relays at Bir- mingham. Although the representatives did not fare well, they nevertheless marked the way for future representatives to carry the Maroon and Gold colors on to greater heights. Molloy, S.J., in a blaze of glory as the team swept the Gulf States Con- ference tennis team title as well as the singles and doubles crowns. Ken Crumley, Loyola ' s top netman for three seasons, enjoyed his most successful year as he lost his opening match of the season to Pensa- cola ' s Jack Behr and then breezed throught 12 straight collegiate opponents to wind up with a season ' s record of 12 wins and one loss. Add to this Ken ' s feat of winning four matches in the GSC tourney and his overall record stands at 16 wins and one loss. The six foot 210 pound star from Santa Aana, California, defeated team mate Mel Bodle for the SSC singles crown in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. In three seasons of col- legiate playing, Crumley has lost only one inter- collegiate match — that in 1947 to Paul Napoll- tano of Spring Hill and now the Badger ' s tennis mentor. In the GSC doubles event, the duo of Crum- ley and Bodle rolled along as they did all sea- son — without a defeat. The crack Wolfpack doubles team won the title over Spring hlill ' s team of Andy Garcia and Leo Denton by the scores of 2-6, 6-0, 6-2, and 6-4. Crumley and Bodle went through 13 straight matches without a defeat in regular season ' s play and then added two victories in the tournament to stretch their streak to 15 matches without a setback. The fine doubles team lost only one set in 15 matches and that to Garcia and Denton and in overall games, racked up 190 games won and only 69 lost for an impressive tennis record. The tennis team, as a whole, had a very good season winning I I matches and losing only two. The Pack team lost Its opening match to the power-laden Pensacola Naval Air Flyers and then won eight straight collegiate matches before bowing to LSU. After the LSU defeat, Loyola went on to win three more matches. The Pack had defeated the TIgermen In a previous match. KEN CRUMLEY MEL BODLE y KEN CRUMLEY, FR. MOLLOY AND MEL BODLE, GSC CHAMPS. Mel Bodle, the No. 2 man of the team and a freshman from Montebello, California, played brilliant tennis in his first year of collegiate com- petition, hlis regular season ' s record stood at I I wins and two losses while his tournament rec- ord stood at three wins and one loss. Reggie Garcia the Pack ' s No. 3 man was the focal point of Loyola ' s game. Reggie was counted upon to win that vital fourth game match for the Pack. Loyola was always assured of wins in the No. I and 2 singles and the No. I doubles match and needed only one more match victory for a team win. The I 1-2 record for the season shows that Reggie, a diminutive player from New Mexico, came through in the pinches, hie was Father Molloy ' s nomination as the most Improved player on the squad. The No. 4 spot was held down by veteran Jack Fox while the No. 5 slot went to Art Gail, who showed great promise in his first year of compe- titive tennis. Fox and Garcia handled the No. 2 doubles most of the season. John Sanguinetti and Carroll Gordon were alternate players on the squad. Incidentally, Father Molloy ' s team brought the first Gulf States Conference title to Loyola. With the squad coming back Intact next year with the exception of Fox, Loyola bids fair to renew its lease on the GSC crown in tennis. REGGIE GARCIA JACK FOX sf R! W di The Bowling League at Loyola this year created decided interest among the students who par- ticipated in the activities. In the regular school league, 21 teams were entered, 12 men teams and 9 girl teams. The winners of the men ' s league were the PKE bowlers who upset the applecart by downing the favorite Campus Kids for the league trophy. Members of the PKE team included Captain Rudy Nieto, Charlie Del Corral, Charlie hiebert, Donald Mc- Kay, Joe Vernaci, and Walter Garvey. VernacI, the smallest man on the team, was the big bowler in the line-up. Joe sparked the PKE ' s all season with a 160 bowling average. A. GERALD LACEY The league and its growth is a direct tribute to its organizer, Jerry Lacey. Lacey started the first bowling league at Loyola in 1947. By means of his own push and super-salesmanship talks, Jerry managed to get the league started with six teams entered. It was a hard push at first, but now Jerry can sit back and relax and look at the fruits of his labor. First Row: Joseph Sprague, Andy Caneza. Second Row: Maurice Larue. Bob Larue, John Fuchb. Loyola started its first season of varsity golf conipetition this year with six matches scheduled with Gulf States Conference members. A home and home arrangement was made with Mississippi Southern, Spring hiill, and South- western. The Pack iinksmen did not make their debut an auspicious one as they dropped all six matches. Lack of college tournament experience hurt Maroon and Gold standard bearers. Captain of the Pack squad was Charley hle- bert. Members of the squad included Chester Budz, Pat Buttimer, Dan Knowles, Lee Le Gros, and Robert Rehm. The team was coached by Father J. J. Molloy, S.J. Hebert made a good showing in the GSC tourney held at New Orleans when he finished third in the meet. PAT BUTTIMER. CHARLEY HEBERT, CHESTER BUDZ, LEE LE GROS, DANNY KNOWLES. WELCOME COACH HAGGERTY THOMAS J. HAGGERTY Loyola University made its bid to enter big time basketball with the signing of Coach Thomas J. hiaggerty as new head coach of basketball at Loyola. The new cage mentor brought national honors and recognition to another Loyola — Loyola of Chicago, hlis five year record at the Windy City University was 107 wins in 148 games. An enviable record, indeed. In 1948, Coach Haggerty brought his Lo- yola of Chicago team to its greatest heights when the quintet reached the finals of the National Invitational Tournament. Fr. Guterl Introduces Coach Haggerty to his new sur- roundings. This was not Coach hiaggerty ' s first ap- pearance in the NIT. hlis De Paul team of 1940 lost out to Colorado University in the semi-final round of the tourney. It seems as if the future destinies of Lo- yola ' s basketball teams are in great hands. Coach hHaggerty emphasized the fact that only h ard work and sacrifice on the part of the athletes can bring about national recog- nition for the Wolfpack. hie will be able to get that out of his athletic charges. Good luck, coach! NTRAMURALS •-S8Bk Baudier fades back for a pass as Galendei and Keenan of PKE rush in. Wetzel heaves a short pass for the BBA seniors over the line of scrimmage. The students of Loyola enjoyed one of their most successful intramural athletic programs this past year. Under the able direction of Jack Orsley, the intramural program offered an out- let for those students whose talents were not suf- ficient to allow them to play for Maroon and Gold teams. The PKE fraternity from the College of Busi- ness Administration was one of the most success- ful competitors this past intramural season and figured prominently in team event. In football, the BA Seniors won their third straight intramural touch football title when they downed the PKE M by the score of 19-7. The Seniors, the Notre Dame of Loyola ' s touch foot- ball league, were coached by Wilfred, Skeeter Theard and included Captain Jim Quigley, Vic Baudier, Lou hiauth, Ray Breaux, Ray Kitziger, Claude Perrier, Billy Glennon, Don Bellou, Pete Tusa, Don Wetzel, Al Smuck, and Warren Bayer. The BA Seniors were champs of the Independent League while PKE reigned as kings in the Fra- ternity League. In basketball, the PKE boys came through with the Intramural championship when they defeated the Moot cagers 47-2 I for the title. PKE won the Frat title while the Moots won the Independent title. Walter Fleming was high point man for the PKE boys with 14 points. Members of the team besides Fleming were captain Rudy Nieto, Rocky Eiermann, Walter Garvey, Jim Galendez, Jim Quigley, Charley hlebert, and Buddy Elizardi. In the Softball, the Dents and Pharmacy shared the intramural crown. The Dents won the Inde- pendent league title while PKE won the Fraternity League title. Pharmacy finished second to the Dents in the Independent League. In the play- offs between the two top teamiS of each league, both of the Independent teams, the Dents and the Pharmacy boys beat the representatives of the Fraternity League. Time did not permit a play-off for the championship between Pharmacy an dthe Dents, so they share the title. Pharmacy thus retains some of the honors that they won last year. In the Intramural track meet, Roland hHymel was the high point man as he garnered 15 points by winning three first place events, hfymel was awarded the individual trophy for the outstand- ing trackmen in the ' mural events. Christ mpri inted ST. PETER ' S IN ROME. (World Wide Photo) dentifying Marks on His Church The following is quoted from the Vatican Council: God, through hHis only-begotten Son, established a Church; and to q ' we everyone the power to recognize her as the guardian and teacher of Revelation . . . endowed her with manifest marks of her divine origin. These marks are found in the Catholic Church alone. (Through these marks — world-wide unity, sanctity, apostol- iclty, catholicity) . . . she is herself a great and perpetual motive of credibility and an unassail- able testimony to her divine mission . . . (God gives everyone sufficient grace to persevere in the true faith) . . . He never abandons them un- less they abandon Him . . . Wherefore, they who by the heavenly gift of Faith have adhered to the truth cannot be at all compared to those, who under the influence of human opinions sub- scribe to a false religion; for the former having under the guidance of the Church embraced the Faith, can never have just cause for changing it or calling It into question. ... (A man can never have just cause for leaving the multiplica- tion table) . . . (Only God can make a tree. Simllarily, objective examination shows that only God could have made the Catholic Church). eter s uome Acme UNITY The uniiy of faith, governmcnf and worship in the Catholic Church is miraculous. Men outside the Church have never been ablo to duplicate it. In the year 33 A.D., Jesus Christ established His Church, hie endowed it with four character- istic marks: namely, sanctity, apostolicity, catho- licity and unity in faith, government and worship. These marks flow from the very nature of His Church as He made it, and must always be present. They might be compared to the finger- prints of an individual. Four hundred million people acknowledge Pope Pius XII as the Successor of the Fisherman. (World Wide Photo) SANCTITY For beatification and canonization at least two public miracles are required. Each century witnesses many beatifications and canonizations confirmed by miracles. Only God can perform a miracle. Each century, God, by His miracles, is saying; This is My Church. Canonization of St. Bernadotle of Lourdes. (Acme Photo Christ promised that hHis Church will be in this world until the end of time. Since Christ Is God, that promise must be fulfilled. Therefore, hlis Church is in the world today. To ascertain which Church in the world today is Christ ' s, one has but to find the Church possessing all the four marks. Examination reveals that only the Catholic Church possesses these marks: unity in faith, gov- ernment and worship; sanctity, confirmed by miracles; catholicity; apostolicity. Canonization of Sts. John de Britto and Bernardino Reallno, Jesuits, and Giuseppe Cafasso, a priest. [Acme Photo). The spectacle afforded by the Catholic Church: — 400,000,000 people of all races, all nations, all classes, believing the same Faith, obeying the same Leader, nourished by the same Sacraments — has no counterpart in this world. Francis Cardinal Speiiman leads a group of American Pilgrims into St. Peter ' s Basilica in Rome. (Acme Photo). CATHOLICITY Pope Pius Xil gives Easter Sunday Blessing to about 500,000 of the Faithful from all parts of the world, gathered on St. Peter ' s Square in Rome. [Acme Photo). Since Christ, Who is God, wished His teachings to reach all generations unadulterated. He had to make His Church infallible in matters of faith and morals. His Church, then, in this year 1950 will bs infallible. In this year 1950, as In all the other years of her long life, the Catholic Church is the only church claiming infallibility. Thus, if the Catholic Church Is not the one founded by Christ, there is no Church of Christ in the wor ' d today. Such a situation would lead to the absurdity that God failed to keep His promise that His Church will be in the world until the end of time. :s « Peter was the Rock upon which Christ founded His Church. History shows that the only See In the world going back in unbroken succession to Peter is the See of Rome, Excavations approaching the traditional location of St. Peter ' s tomb, beneath St. Peter ' s Basilica.
