Text from Pages 1 - 268 of the 1949 volume:

1 949 Within these pages we attempt to give you a bird ' s-eye view of Loyola Life. We have tried to make the 1949 WOLF a last- ing memorial of this year spent in study, a memorial also of the lighter side of college life. If in years to come, you look at these pages with fond memory and derive moments of happy recollection, our purpose will have been achieved. «m£ tit R lUploto I ........ ... ..... ....... .... a j cw MM aatf awowfc Wittgi sw ' O t M ffai Loyola has been fortunate to have at its helm, during the past four years of expansion, a man whose ability and personality have served as guide and stimulus to the University. Such a man is our President, the Very Reverend Thomas J. Shields, S.J. To the students Father Shields is the ideal president. Newcomers to the campus soon learn that he is as likely to be observed talking to a group of students as to be seen seated in his office interviewing dis- tinguished visitors. Our President with the French Ambassador A Friendly Chat at .- ■ VERY REVEREND THOMAS J. SHIELDS, S. J. REV. A. WILLIAM CRANDELL, S.J. Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Dean ol Faculties COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE REV. LESTER F. X. GUTREL. SJ. Dean of Men Assistant Dean, College of Arts and Sciences Father Crandell Greets French Naval Officers Because of the genial and efficient manner in which he conducts his office, Father A. William Crandell, S.J., has exerted a profound influence on both students and faculty. Besides being Dean of Faculties, Father Crandell also serves as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, governing it with marked success. His readiness to see the students at all times and to listen to their problems make him one of the most popular men of the faculty. Father Lester F. X. Guterl, S.J., A.B., A.M., the Dean of Men, first came to Loyola in 1943. In his office, you will always find stu- dents wanting to know the why of Uni- versity regulations. This may call for hold- ing a place in a waiting line, but any student will find here a place to voice his opinion. Whether the reply be in the affirmative or negative, it is always accompanied with a grin. Some advice lor .Student leaders Office of the Registrar, College of Arts and Sciences First Row: • .JOHN G. A veteran of twenty-six missions over Germany and the holder of the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. Cadet Lentini was awarded a plaque by Maj. Gen. Parker. He also received an appointment to the regular Army. On an informal inspection tour, Maj. Gen. Parker, the Provost Marshall General of the Fourth Army Area, was highly complimentary with regard to the officers and the men of the Loyola Cadet Corps. Gen. Parker also expressed high expectations for the Loy- ola Corps, basing his expectations on the character formation of the individual cadet resulting from a Catholic education and the efficiency of the instruc- tors. Because of the great influx of veterans into college life, the Loyola Unit found a ready welcome among these men who realized the importance of rounding out their education with military preparation. Their contribution to the Loyola Unit cannot be overesti- mated. There may be found in this unit veterans who served in every theatre of operation. Upon en- tering the Loyola R.O.T.C. these men had the ad- vantage of being well indoctrinated in the discipline necessary to military life and already possessed to Military Library The Guilty Party a degree the qualities of leadership necessary to the making of top-quality officers. Now that the unit has completed its second year, many veterans who composed the nucleus of the Loyola Unit are now second lieutenants in the Army of the U. S. Some of the graduates have been offered appointments in the regular army, others have been classified as distinguished military students and will have the same opportunity upon graduating from the University. Many of the men of Loyola who have been com- missioned did active duty during the summer months and reports of outstanding ability and effi- ciency came down from various headquarters with which they served. THE WOLF PACK Hard hit by the graduation of star play- ers, The Wolfpack of 1949 failed to be win- ning team. Showing a record of 1 1 wins and 16 losses, the Pack lacked height and experience. In 1949 the Pack entered the Gulf States Conference and showed a con- ference record of 7 wins against 9 losses. After two opening victories over Keesler Field and Pensacola Navy, the third con- test, with Alabama State Teachers, was the first loss of the season for Loyola. The next game was a victory, this time over How- ard College by a score of 54-41. The Northwestern Demons from Nachi- toches, Louisiana, journeyed to the Cres- cent City to supply the Wolfpack with its Coach Orsley gives words of wisdom to players during time-out first Gulf States Conference competitor. Loyola was the winner by a score of 57-43. Clyde Poche and Pancho Vila led the winners with 14 and 13 points respectively. Bob Rehm and Freshman Lou Bravo stood out on the defensive. After two losses to Houston University, The Men of the South returned to play Spring Hil l College in the annual Home- coming tilt. Led by Bill Treuting and Vila, the Pack won by the score of 43-34. Three successive losses then followed for the Pack. The Camelia Bowl game with SLI was the first. The second was a rough game with LSU, and the third was a one- sided affair with the Tennessee Vols. But a string of victories followed as the Pack beat Delta State Teachers, Mississippi PETE FINNEY CLAUDE DOC PERRIEE LOU BRAVO WALLY BARBOT Southern and Louisiana College. The Con- ference standings showed the Pack in a tie for first place. Loyola ' s next three games on the road were disastrous. First Spring Hill beat the Pack by a score of 55-37; then in two im- portant conference games with Northwest- ern and Centenary, the spiritless Pack was squelched by scores of 61-35 nd 47-35. Back on home territory, the Pack continued the losing streak as SLI beat them 47-35. Mickey Crossin gels in trouble as he tries to shoot in the LSU junior game An unfortunate incident sets in 108 TRACK Loyola University reentered the field of track in 1949 after a layoff of nearly a decade. Big Jim Mc- Cafferty stepped into the position of head track coach and managed very well with the talented but young group of men. In the SLI relays, the newly formed squad man- aged five points and eighth place. Elmer Grund- meyer and Lou Hauth stood out for Loyola. Two triangular meets followed on the Pack ' s schedule. In the first, with Southwestern and Louisi- ana College, the Wolves were second. First places were won by Ray Grenier in the 100 yard dash, Lou Hauth in the javelin, Ernie Miller in the discus, and Joe Fuselier in the 880 and the 440 relay teams. The other meet with Southwestern and Southeastern found Loyola with only two first places and one tie for first. In the GSC meet, Loyola was in third place with 56 Vz points behind Southwestern with 91 and South- eastern with 64. Elmer Grundmeyer won first place in the 100 yard dash, Jack Eumont won the javelin and Ray Bordes tied for first in the pole vault. But in spite of the fine caliber of ball, the boys were unable to clinch the Gulf States Championship, and ended up in second place. The season got under way with a double victory for the Pack over Illinois Southern. Ellis Quigley started the first game and got credit for the win. Pete Tusa led the Pack at the plate with three singles. In the second contest, freshman Eddie Konick Pitchers, Robinson and Konick Catchers, Glennon and Flynn pitched the Pack to an 8-1 win. Weldon Cousins hit a homer. The next game, with Keesler, was an- other victory for Konick. Coming in to re- lieve Don Robinson he secured a 7-6 win for the Pack. Cousins, Bill Glennon, and Al Wiedemann started at the plate. The winning streak continued for the Pack when they beat the U. S. Merchant Marine team 16-3 in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Maurice Landrieu notched his first victory of the season as Cousins and Vila did some great stickwork. After victories over Keesler Field and Algiers Navy, Loyola was ready for GSC competition. Three straight victories for the Pack over Louisiana College, Southwestern and Southeastern, put the Pack on the top of the league. The winning pitchers were Infielders, Vila. Shirer, Cousins, Tusa, Crossin Quigley, Konick and Robinson. It was at this stage, however, that a losing streak started for the Wolves which doomed them to second place in the Conference. Losses at the hands of Mississippi Southern, South- western, and Louisiana Tech come in rapid succession, the first was a heartbreaking 1-0 loss for Konick. Quigley lost the second. The remaining five games of the season Monroe Caballero ready for the pitch George Vila who hit at a .312 clip Weldon Cousins Outfielders Casteix, Wedig. Wiedemann, Caballero, Eumont were all victories for the Pack. Spring Hill was the first to be beaten at the hands of Don Murphy and Konick. Then the Pack made up for a previous loss by lacing the Mississippi Southerners by a score of 13-5. Northwestern lost to Loyola twice by the scores of 6-2 and 4-0. Finally the Southeast- ern Lions were hammered to an 18-3 loss. In 1949, Captain Weldon Cousins hit at an amazing average of .440. Ending his college baseball career in this fashion, he will always be regarded as one of the school ' s greatest athletes. Pitchers Landrieu, Robinson. Konick, Murphy, Quigley. 112 BOWLING Because of the efforts of A. Gerald Lacey, the Bowl- ing League of 1949 continued to be one of the most spirited and interesting activities on the campus. Clare Boothe Luce, famous orator, journalist, play- wright, and former Congresswoman from Connecti- cut, opened the 1948-49 series of Forum lectures at Municipal Auditorium. She spoke on the circum- stances surrounding her conversion to Catholicism. Among the others who appeared on the 1948-49 Forum program was the yearly favorite of the audi- ence, the Right Reverend Monsignor Fulton J. Sheen, internationally known Catholic philosopher, author, orator, and chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Catholic University, Washington, D. C. He spoke on The Supreme Alternative — A Broken Heart or A Broken World. Another yearly favorite who graced the Forum was the Reverend Bernard Hubbard, S.J., better known as the Glacier Priest. He spoke on the situa- tion in the Far East. Mrs. Clare Boothe Luce chats with Father John Toomey. S.J., Forum director Mr. Evelyn Waugh, famous British author, spoke on Three Famous Converts A view of the audience at Mrs. Luce ' s lecture Rev. Bernard Hubbard, S.J.. enjoying a talk with Father Toomey before his lecture begins. Miss Elizabeth Bentley relates her experiences as a Communist party member to Forum audience. Elizabeth Bentley, who figured prominently in the recent exposure of Communist spies, added intrigue to the Forum lectures with her talk on I Was A Russian Spy. Adding an international flavor to the Forum was Evelyn Waugh, famous English author. Mr. Waugh spoke on Three World Famous Converts. His lec- ture closed the 1948-49 Forum series. By a strange coincidence, the three lay speakers were all converts to the Catholic faith and two of them, Mrs. Luce and Miss Bentley, were converts of Monsignor Sheen. To Father Toomey, Forum director, goes the thanks of the student body for bringing to New Or- leans a series of outstanding speakers. UBL was organized to encourage the prin- ciples of brotherhood, to promote justice, and to instill the spirit of American patriotism in its members. Its object is to support the Constitution and to obey the laws and traditions of the United States of America, and of Loyola University. Its members are re- minded that the fraternity is founded for the University and not the University for the Fraternity. UBL won the NFCCS trophy awarded to the fraternity that contributed most to the 1948 relief drive. UBL is active in all intra-mural and pan-hellenic events. Its colors are Old Gold and Peacock Blue.
