Practically the entire ' 24 team had reported, along with graduates froin the freshman and intramural teams. This splendid material a[id a good schedule gave promise of a wonderful season. Our hopes were doomed, however, for as the day of the first game drew near, there began a series of incidents and accidents which literally left the team a wreck. To climax misfortune officials of the S. I. A. A., without rhyme or reason, began ruling out player after player until Loyola, out of self respect, was forced to resign from the Association. Minus the services of fourteen men from the first string, the Wolves met adversity with grim determination, fighting from the first whistle of the Southwestern game to the last whistle of the Tennessee game. The spirit of the team vas so marked as to earn for it the title of the gamest team Loyola ever had, and indeed it was a team that vas never beaten — only outscored. Crippled and smarting under the unjust action of the S. 1. A. . ., the )lves dropped their first game to Southwestern 17 to o. The same players went through the entire game without a rest, battling vainly against the greatest of odds, fresh men. The following week found the Wolves engaging Camp llenning. It was one of the most powerful army teams in the country which ran over and around the desperately fighting pack for forty-five points, the while keeping their own goal uncrossed. Saturday, October loth, saw the wolf pack gnawing the bones of their first kill, Mississippi College. Like in preceding games, the visitors grabbed off an early lead, but, unlike preceding games, desperate battling vas re varded and the Choctaws were handed the smaller end of 7 to 6. t.;-,i£- V.- Dallas Univer ity va tlu in t inxader nt the lair. Much heraklccl were the llilkoppers. tiir vifh them came the record cit a perfect goal line and not a single first down chalked against them. Although swamped under a 5S to 6 score, the pack surprised Dallas by registering five first downs and then throwing in a touchdown for good measure. The following Saturday, the Birmingham-Southern Panthers came to battle the Wolves. Badly crippled from the disastrous Dallas fray, the team fell before the only southern team to score 011 the great Alabama, Southern Champions. The score, 38 to o, is misleading, however, as the game was hard fought throughout. It was at this time Loyola decided to se er connections with the S. I. A. A., returning to the line-up severa l stars vho were then gracing the sidelines. It vas a team somewhat resembling its old true form that took on the Oglethorpe Petrels. The Petrels, later S. I. A. A. champions, the great Maurer included, were treated to a real battle, and it was well in the second half before the flashy halfback crossed the last white line. At the end of the game the Petrels had managed to eke out a 13 to o victory. Held in restraint for five of their first six games, the hungry Wolves simply tore the tempting Spring Hill morsel to pieces. Before the appetite of the pack was appeased, the Badgers were forced to accept the o from the 30 to o score. The second annual battle with Louisiana State gave the Cadets sweet revenge for the drub- bing the Wolves handed them two years ago. Held scoreless in the last half, the Tigers took the game by the 13 points they had gathered earlier in the game. Handicapped by a strange climate, a strange field and a sea of mud which considerably slowed up the Loyola backs, the Tennessee Doctors were held to a 2$ to iz score. With condi- tions more favorable, the score would probably tell a different tory, but e en as it is, the closing chapter of the igi season is satisfactory. Pi u -S SS z -3 r Baseball 1926 A the Annual goes to press baseball Is just getting under way, but early as it is, prospects are very encouraging. H.uce Ha ' es, one of the best baseball coaches in the South, is in charge of the team and is bLuliling his nine around Captain ■jininiy Vorhoff, Hob Dunbar, Hughie Rogers and A. D. Smith, the only players remaining from the 1924 team (there Aas no varsity baseball in 1925). Coach Hayes expects these men, ejpeciall Dunbar and Vorhoff, to be the outstanding stars of the year, both being natural born players with a great deal of experience added on. Captain Vorhoff will hold down second base, while Dunbar is the ace of the Loyola hurling corps. It might be noted in passing that these men have repeatedly turned down professional offers rather than mterrupt their college courses. Practice during March received a serious set back due to the heavy rains which continued throughout the month and prevented the team ' s reaching its form for the opening of the season. The new field was formally dedicated to the use of baseball on Wednesday, March 3J, when the team met the strong nine from Auburn. The game went to Auburn, 6-S, due more to the jioor base running of otu players than to the eight hits marked against Bob Dunbar. The next da ' Auburn rode with comparative ease to a 13-2 victory, the visitors finding Nobile ' s offerings frequently. A series with Spring Hill was started at Mobile, April 4th, with Lo ola dropping the game 8-j. Ajiril 3th gave the Wolves revenge and the series was split by the .score of 12-8 for Loyola. Returning to New Orleans, the two teams again split a series, Loyola winning the first game with 8-7, and Spring Hill taking the second 10-2. With the substantial improvement which is .soon expected to manifest itself in the pitching staff, the remaining games of the season will undoubtedly show Loyola to much greater advantage. We are primarily a handball organization, founded for the purpose of furthering, facilitating and consummating the practice of crabbing and pro- testing all unfavorable decisions in handball games. Every close or near close decision goes in our favor; if we allow our opponents to claim it we are cheating — moreover we do wrong in allowing them to cheat. A line ball placed by our opponents is always out. W e see it with our own eyes. We are a lusty, flourishing society, being composed of the loudest speakers in the L iii ersity. ( ur roll claims, among other celebrities, the King of the courts. Our number is restricted — we are select. Only an exceptionally high grade of griping will entitle you to our initiation. Charter members prize their card and guard it under lock and key alongside of their graduation certificate. Our Greek ancestry is ever so genuine, forsooth: CiOTTA BEA GRIPA. BLOWIXG AWAY 1 he wolf, Nineteen Ttventy-Six A The Wolf, Nineteen Tiventy-Six The Wolf, Nineteen Twenty-Six SUNNY LOYOLA TTie Wolf, Nineteen Twenty-Six Modern History The RANCH has become tradition at Loyola. Why it was ever called the Ranch in the first place, or H-ho named it that, seems to be somewhat in doubt. Some say it was Texas Barnes who did it while others hold that it was the brilliant idea of Nellie Gilmore. After many days of diligent questioning the writer was as far from finding out as when he began. But while there is such widespread uncertainty as to who named it, there is no doubt at all as to why the house was called the Ranch. Here, all the stories agree. The Ranch is the official home of the football men. Football men are noted for the odd ideas they have of what constitutes fun. It has been the experience of the writer that football men never seem to be having a really enjoyable time unless they are wrecking some other brother ' s room while he is absent, or painting his face with ink when he is present, but sleeping, or putting axle grease on the doorknob. We believe it was Red Gremillion who took apart Cotten ' s bed and hung it out of the window ; and if we remember correctly, it was Charlie Cotten who took all the slats from Red ' s bed, cut the bristles of three toothbrushes and sprinkled them between the sheets. Such is the wild life at the Ranch. A fellow has to be on his guard constantly. It is not safe, for instance, to walk into a room without first looking at the top of the door, for there may be a waste paper basket so placed up there that when you open the door it will drop on your head. It is never wise to walk in the halls at night for some thoughtless person may have unwittingly left several chairs there, or may have moved the table or the piano and the electric light, so that you would stumble against them in the dark. But even despite these barbarities, strange to say, the Ranch has its own estimable code of ethics. It is not considered good form to molest another when he is sick unto death or when he is studying. (It is said that occasions for breaking the latter regulation are quite rare.) And never for a minute would a fellow think of playing a trick on his roommate. It just isn ' t done. Room- mates stick together to defend themselves against other fellows and their roommates. It is a case of room against room. Now to complete this dissertation, we must observe that besides the human dwellers at the Ranch there are two other creatures who rightly deserve liberal mention in this year-book. They are Tululu, the landlady ' s poodle and Loco, her parrot. Anent Tululu, there was a story printed in the Maroon. It ran something like this: There ' s a little poodle dog over at the Ranch. They call him, her, or it, Tululu. One day Gilmore was hungrily munch- ing a sandwich on the porch. Little Tululu came sniffing around J. Y. as if asking for lunch. Gilmore looked up at his, her, or its mistress. ' May I throw him, her, or it a little bit? ' he inquired of the landlady. ' Certainly you may, ' she replied, pleased at this outburst of generosity. Whereupon, Gilmore picked up the kiyoodle by the nape of the neck and heaved him over the rail. ' And if Tululu comes back, ma ' m, ' he asked the lady, may I throw him, her, or it a little bit more? ' And just the other day, the landlady asked Cal Cooper to rescue Loco from the top of a tree into which she had flown. So Cal grabbed a brick and knocked the poor polly down. We would like to set down just what Loco herself said to Cal, but we can ' t — Budge might think we were stealing his stuff. And now in closing, we feel it our duty to console the reader with the assurance that despite so much that is all the time going on at the Ranch and that the boys play so many tricks upon one another, there is really no enmity at all. Everything is taken in good faith. A person knows better than to get peeved about anything. So, the Ranch has become tradition at Loyola. There is no other institution in the world like it — and, according to Pourciau, there never will be. The Wolf, Nineteen Twenty-Six A -— - K are all interested in the How and Why of things. A f I natural and wholesonit curiosity ever urges us to seek out the M r causes of things, to learn the means by which they were ac- complished. Every kind of human progress, traced to its source, is found to spring from this God-given inquisitiveness in the mind of man. Geniuses are simply those who are intelligently and perseveringly inquisi- tive to a remarkable degree. Would you know then — you who have read the foregoing pages — the Why and How of this book? The answer is to be found written upon the pages which follow. As a student or friend of Loyola, you will not be indifferent to it. ' ou will appreciate the announcements of our friends in these next pages — our friends and yours, the advertisers in the Wolf, many of whom arc responding to our appeal for the second and third time. Their contributions of money are the Why and How of this volume, for without them its publication would not have been feasible. Let their generosity find its reward in your good-will toward them. As a possessor of the Wolf, you owe some return to those who have made it possible. Give them our patronage. Let them know that the Wolf Ad brought you to their door. It will create friends for your- self and for Loyola; it will insure the success of Loyola publications. The Wolf Staff. The Wolf, Nineteen Twenty-Six Compliments of THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS ARTHUR J.
