' -S } ■ 1985 EVERGREEN Loyola College 4501 North Charles Street Baltimore, Maryland 21210 God changes not what is in a people, until they change what is in them- selves. — The Koran 2 Campus Scenes Campus Scenes 3 4 Campus Scenes ' ' ' Change ' is scienti- fic, ' progress ' is ethi- cal; change is indubi- table, whereas pro- gress is a matter of controversy. — Bertrand Russell Unpopular Essays Campus Scenes 5 A True Christian Gentleman Human growth is marked by succes- sive transitions full of challenge and op- portunity, full of risk and hope. As chil- dren we say goodbye to Santa Claus and hello to first grade. We enter our teens and encounter first love, first job, first car. Later some enter religion or military service. Most marry. And each such change brings new prospects and new problems. One threshold we the class of 1985 will never forget fearing and facing and passing was the transi- tion from high school to college. It all came as a severe shock; the dif- ference in methods of study, in budget- ing of time, in relations with people, in new friendships, new demands, new choices — in a whole new environ- ment. This was a time we needed a friend besides our parents one wise and experienced, sensitive and imagina- tive, sympathetic and supportive. And we found him in Dr. P. Edward Kalten- bach. Professor of Ancient Classics and our Freshman Dean. Some of our problems looked insolv- able to us as we wrestled with our course schedules, core requirements, major options, teacher preferences, which at times seemed incompatible and irreconcilable. And so we lined up by the dozens at the door marked Dean of Freshmen.” Luckily for us, the door was wide open — and so was Dean Kaltenbach ' s big heart. Our first encounter was with the Dean ' s secretary, motherly Anne Spam- pinato, who clarified our options and our needs. Then the Dean would deftly dig out our records from under a four- foot pyramid atop his desk, would ana- lyze our situation and listen to our tales of woe. Soon we were happily on our way. Once, they say, the Dean phoned in sick, and Anne cleaned his office. neatly filed all the papers and shelved books piled on the desk and chairs and fishbowl. Dean Kaltenbach afterward complained he couldn ' t find a thing for weeks till the usual comfortable confu- sion was restored. However troubled or timid we might be, we always found Dean Kaltenbach patient, long-suffering, and self-sacrific- ing, and totally at the service of Loyola College and its students. Each student was special and no question was too trivial or too complex: they and we were always worthy of careful treatment. We do, however, confess to a suspicion that he preferred the hard questions and liked to come out strong under difficul- ties. Here then is a man of infinite re- source. Difficult problems he solved at once; the impossible took a little longer. Not for nothing had he spent three years in the Air Force in World War II making and breaking ciphers, crypto- grams, and codes. Even the astute Dean McGuire, on the rare occasions when he was stumped, called on the kindly expertise of his colleague, friend, and former teacher — and so did many oth- ers. And however much some people, like ourselves as freshmen, may be con- fused or even frightened by rapid tran- sition, and may adapt to change painful- ly and tentatively, here is a man who finds in the challenge of the new a way of life. Graduated from Loyola in 1942, Ed Kaltenbach took his Ph.D. in classi- cal languages at the Johns Hopkins, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. In the ensuing forty years at Loyola he has survived a revolution or two almost every year. In his undergraduate days a student needed four years of high school Latin to enter Loyola ' s A.B. program, and then had to struggle through further courses with Horace and Cicero and their friends, to say nothing of the Greeks and other foreigners, in order to complete requirements for the degree. But temper d. mutantur, and eventually Dean Kaltenbach saw the day when he was the whole classics department, ex- cept for an occasional student who turned up with an odd taste for antiqui- ties. His ingenuity still managed to spread the good news of classical learning un- der the guise of his courses in history, composition, logic, and comparative lit- erature. His students much admire his education, his pedagogical skills, and the humaneness that mark him as a memorable teacher. And as dean he still managed to inculcate the treasures of knowledge and art bequeathed us by ancient Greece and Rome and Israel. Far beyond his other multifarious achievements. Dean Kaltenbach is uni- versally esteemed as a true Christian gentleman. His ever-present good hu- mor, his unfailing courtesy and consid- eration, his scrupulous sense of fairness, have endeared him to students and col- leagues alike. Whether conversing learnedly on stamp-collecting, base- ball, or exotic fish, or winning artfully at contract bridge, creating a gourmet dinner, and just getting his job well and fully done, Ed Kaltenbach is a treasure, a shining example to the world of the kind of graduate Loyola ' s liberal Chris- tian education aims to develop. The received legend is doubtless true, that on Dean Kaltenbach ' s heart the initials L.C. are deeply imprinted forever. 6 Dedication P. With almost 20 new members and under the guidance of Coach Hugh Anderson, the ruggers concen- trated their efforts on fierce rucking and disciplined techique. This new direc- tion resulted in their first crushing victo- ry over Towson State in the season opener 23-0. The ruggers played well in their next two games, but they were defeated through close decisions by the Naval Academy and James Madison University. In the following two confer- ence games the club split decisions, easily defeating the once powerful Mt. St. Mary ' s 52-0, while losing to the 1 ranked University of Maryland 15-0. Although the loss to Maryland upset na- tional playoff hopes for the club, Loyo- la ' s B-side demonstrated the depth and heart of Loyola Rugby as they dominat- ed most of their game and shut out Maryland 16-0. Following a victory over area rival Baltimore Rugby Club, A-side suffered losses to the experienced Severn River and Old Red Rugby Clubs, ending their season on a low note. Loyola ' s C- side saved face for the club and showed a spark of hope for fhe future, as they defeated both these teams in intense, hard-fought games. Loyola Rugby was honored again this season by having two players, Chris Ciliberti and Joe Morell, selected to the Potomac Rugby Union Select Side. Captain Rudy Buch- heit was further honored by being cho- sen to the Eastern Rugby Union Select Side, which represents the best teams on the east coast. Although the A-side lost in a hard-fought match, the Killer B ' s redeemed Loyola ' s reputation. Team Captain Rudy Buchheit attribut- ed the loss in part to the unusually narrow width of Rich- mond ' s field. We had a lot of speed on the outside that couldn ' t be utilized, noted Buchheit. The Georgetown game scheduled for the following week was cancelled because that team was unable to field a side. Instead match secretary Greg Levickas arranged for three games against the nationally ranked Washington Men ' s Club. Although Loyola ' s A-, B-, and C-sides lost, victory was claimed in an intense D-side game. Club President Jim Brown noted that losing to this team did not adversely affect team morale because losses are acceptable at that level. The next two weeks saw Loyola soundly defeating both Catholic and Virginia Commonwealth. In both of these games, Loyola controlled the action. The forward rucking in the VCU game was at its best, commented senior Joe Troy. The next week, Loyola played the Baltimore County Men ' s Club, a team composed of many Loyola graduates. Losing to this team was probably the low point of the season. After returning from Easter break, the team traveled to Frostburg, where C-side claimed an overwhelming 5-6-0 victory. The team ended the season by winning the Jesuit Invitational and the Baltimore Preakness Tournaments. 64 Men ' s Spring Rugby Men ' s Spring Rugby 65 Women ' s Fall Rugby T he 1984 fall season was the lady ruggers ' most challenging to date. Joining Potomac Rugby Union play after the graduation of many talent- ed players was a difficult task tor this young team. They started the season slowly with losses to James Madison, Towson, and Philadelphia. But their hard practices finally paid off with a vic- tory over Frostburg in the Washington ' tournament. After a well-deserved midterm break, the lady ruggers fin- ished their season strongly with in- spired matches against Maryland and Washington and victories over UMBC and William Mary. This season ' s team continued the tra- ditional canned food drive, donating contributions to OX-FAM for relief in Ethiopia. This event exemplifies the spirit and diligence characteristic of this team on and off the field. With many new players, working hard and obtain- ing game experience, the ladies are looking forward to an excellent spring season. The lady ruggers attribute much of their success to Coach Jett Fa- len and the men ' s rugby club, who pro- vided valuable instruction and support. They finished the season with an excellent record of eight wins and only three losses. But it doesn ' t matter anyway, in many cases such is not the case in athletic competition. In cross country, for instance, we have an en- deavor wherein individual accomplishment is of- tentimes as invigorating and measureable as that of the team. The 1984 Greyhound cross country team will never feel it was successful oft its record of having won just one dual competition; still, just about every member of the team improved dramatically during the course of the two-month season, a very short time when considered in the context of developing a runner. Easily the bellwether of the squad was junior Kevin Seidl, who not only won tour races but was instrumental in getting fellow student-athletes to compete so that the team did not have to forfeit any matches. Seidl ' s progress has been such that in his senior year he is expected to develop into the best Loyola runner of the last half-dozen years. Juniors Pat Parr and John Warthen, sophomore Jim Stanley and freshmen Kevin Engle and Vince Connolly all had their moments, but a lack of a solid training base coming into the season penalized them dramatically. All will be returning so it is ex- pected they will be able to pick up where they left off last November when the team, for the most part, turned in a creditable show in the Mason-Dixon Conference championship race. — Phil Jackman The Sun Cross Country 83 A The game progresses as the team looks on. The Baltimore Civic Center was full of encouraging faces as the graduates prepared to make their walk across the stage. Ted Miles, Senior Class Presi- dent, presented the college with the largest pledge by a graduating class in Loyola ' s history, to be used in improv- I ing handicapped facilities in honor of I fellow graduate Paul Peroutka. Jeanne j Kirkpatrick, former United States Am- ! bassador to the United Nations, ad- dressed the graduates and their families with her speech, and as the masses exit- ed the aduitorium, the new graduates prepared themselves for the future. 234 Commencement Commencement 235 . We have had to meet academic chal- lenges — the challenge of passing that grueling accounting or biology test, or com- pleting ten or more papers in one semester — and on time, or waking up in time for that eight o ' clock class that you know you have already missed too much. There were other challenges . . . Chal- lenges that made it rather difficult to meet academic deadlines amidst a world of social fun and adventure. Partying through the night while singing American Pie, and surviving the next morning to tell about it. Scoring the winning try in a rugby game or the winning goal in a field hockey game. Saving enough money to afford to go to the Senior Prom. And there were even more challenges — from our trudging through the knee-deep mud around obstacles such as dump trucks and construction workers, to our own build- ing upon beliefs and values for the develop- ment of new ones . . . 236 Commencement . . .We hdve been molded by an institution that has taught us strong ideals, truths, and beliefs about God, the world, each other, and ourselves. It is now up to us to go out and live what we have become. And LIVE THAT we can, for each of us has the ability to achieve great things and dream great things ... St. Aneselm said: It is one thing to see the valley of peace from a wooded ridge. It is quite another to tread the road which leads there. The challenge of treading that r oad may be difficult. However, if our heart is in it, we will get there. If we can learn to make dis- tinctions and challenge assumptions, we will get there. If we can laugh at ourselves with- out ever aiming doubt at ourselves, we will get there. If we can be strong and assertive, yet full of feeling and honesty, we will get there. We cannot get there so easily by car or plane, only by hard work and risk, and by not quite knowing what we are doing. But there is something we can carry to ease the load: the love, the laughter, and the memo- ries of our families, of Loyola, and of each other. Remember the times we have shared, but remember them in an effort to grow and move ahead. And as we continue to travel that road and build on to our knowledge and memories, what we will discover will be something won- derful. What we will discover will be our- selves. And we will get there. — Ted Miles May 26, 1985 Commencement 237 Senior Directory Janice Bledsoe 106 La Paix La. As members of the Loyola College Class of 1 985, we have endured four years to gain that tenuous foothold of rebirth. From the construction of the DeChiaro College Center to amendments in the curriculum, Loyola has under- gone a Renaissance that has never been more apparent to us than it is now, at the culmination of our undergraduate days. We realize that we are building upon a proud and glorious heritage that will be cherished and nourished into the future. They say that you can ' t go home again. And we will certainly find this adage true when we journey back to Loyola. For the Loyola we visit as alumni will surely not be the Loyola we knew as undergraduates. The people will be different, the campus invariably will have grown, our favorite professor may have long since retired, and we ourselves will have gone through our own metamorphoses. Change, is ultimately inevitable. Our journey back to Loyola must therefore be a journey of the mind. We can each remember our own Loyola, the pain and the triumph we each experienced there. And we can do this as we leaf through this annual, for that is the purpose of this book. Perhaps that one photograph will capture the glory of the moment, jog our memories and make it all seem real again, as if nothing has indeed changed. Perhaps through this look at where we have been, we can better comprehend where we are going. Most significantly, perhaps this vision of our heritage, our past, will bring us to the- same sense of rediscovery that is, in fact, our Renaissance. Rosa L. Mallonga Editor-in-Chief Evergreen 1985 17 This is our Renaissance.
