In July 1964 Father Joseph Sellinger arrived at Loyola as President of the College. Two years previously he had written an essay in which he sketched some very broad lines indica- tive of his thinking about college education. It was an essay steeped in the humanistic tradition and rigorous intellectual discipline with which he was already identified. He spoke of the quest for academic excellence and the need to go beyond that goal toward the kind of contemplation which serves the pursuit of truth and the guidance of youth, the kind which takes place in ivory towers. He allowed that there must be a few handsome ivory towers on every campus. He spoke of a scholarly contemplative faculty and of a group of administra- tors who could dream as well as beg and be the lubricating element in the midst of specialists. He spoke of a world in which play, guidance, affection, and social activity have their place. He spoke of the College as a body which must be loyal to its mission. In the twenty years during which he has served Loyola as President, Father Sellinger has built admirably on the work of his predecessors. He taught, preached, inspired, begged, and planned, all with increasing enthusiasm as the years have passed and become decades, precisely because he so deeply feels the loyalty which he is able to build in others. His roles as Priest, educator, civic leader, and friend all blend into the person whose works already honor him. We wish to add to this honor by dedicating the 1984 edition of The Evergreen Annual to Reverend Joseph A. Sellinger, S. J. Dedication ?
