Sellinger, S.J. In July 1964 Father Joseph Sellinger arrived at Loyola as President of the College. Two years previously he had written an essay in which he sketched some very broad lines indica- tive of his thinking about college education. It was an essay steeped in the humanistic tradition and rigorous intellectual discipline with which he was already identified. He spoke of the quest for academic excellence and the need to go beyond that goal toward the kind of contemplation which serves the pursuit of truth and the guidance of youth, the kind which takes place in ivory towers. He allowed that there must be a few handsome ivory towers on every campus. He spoke of a scholarly contemplative faculty and of a group of administra- tors who could dream as well as beg and be the lubricating element in the midst of specialists. He spoke of a world in which play, guidance, affection, and social activity have their place. He spoke of the College as a body which must be loyal to its mission. In the twenty years during which he has served Loyola as President, Father Sellinger has built admirably on the work of his predecessors. He taught, preached, inspired, begged, and planned, all with increasing enthusiasm as the years have passed and become decades, precisely because he so deeply feels the loyalty which he is able to build in others. His roles as Priest, educator, civic leader, and friend all blend into the person whose works already honor him. We wish to add to this honor by dedicating the 1984 edition of The Evergreen Annual to Reverend Joseph A. Sellinger, S. J. Dedication ? ■Hlllllltlill f jjltfiiiiiiiiniif [jjjiiiiiiiitniii !!! ! j ! The F OTC Cadet Battalion had a busy and productive year. In the fall, the monthly Thursday afternoon retreat ceremony was intro- duced. the ceremony which signals the end of the day on Army posts. Ii)uring both semesters the cadets participated in a variety of Field Training Exercises (FTX). Here they learned rifle marksmanship, practiced land navigation, and improved their leadership skills. In December, Tim Madey, the Cadet Battalion Commander, was pro- moted to Colonel, the first ever in the Cadet Battalion. During Janu- ary two cadets, Jeff Kramer and Kevin Seidl, successfully completed Army Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Also during Janu- ary, the juniors spent two weeks training at Fort Meade in preparation for Advanced Camp in the summer. In March the Rangers spent a weekend training with Co B, 175th Infantry of the Maryland Army National Guard. The final Field Training Exercise in April saw the Rangers and Seniors pitted against the rest of the battalion for realis- tic combat training. The final activity of the year was commissioning on May 27, where eighteen students received their gold bars as second lieutenants. R. O. T. The 1 983 Fall season was filled with ups and downs for the Loyola Rugby Club. Featuring over 20 new members, the club started the season by trouncing collegiate opponent Georgetown, 25-3. The highlight of the season was the next match when the ruggers shut out formerly number one ranked Naval Academy 7-0 in an intense battle. Plagued with injuries, Loyola dropped their next three, losing to Frostburg (3-0), Salisbury State and the University of Mary- land. Loyola evened their record at 4-4 by winning two of their last three games. They defeated Mt. St. Mary’s and St. John ' s of New York before losing their final match to Old Red. The victory against Mt. St. Mary ' s was especially sweet after losing to them the previous season by a single point in the final match of the Mount Cup Tournament. St. John ' s and Mt. St. Mary ' s were both shutout, 45-0 and 7-0, respec- tively. Player determination and support from the fans helped the ruggers through this reconstruction period and enabled them to continue to be a dominant force in the Potomac Rugby Union. 66 Men ' s Fall Rugby 1 1 Men’s Spring Rugby Front Row; Brian McCaw, Steve Larcher, Chuck Hutzell, Kevin McCann, Jim Schuette. The 1 984 spring season will long be remembered by the members of the Loyola Men ' s Rugby Club, The club con- tinued their successful Rent-a-Rugger campaign for the second year in a row, donating all profits to the Leukemia Foundation. This event well exemplifies the club’s inter- ests in community affairs. This was the first year in the club’s history that an undefeated record of 12-0 was achieved. Furthermore, Loyola won the Preakness and the Jesuit Invitational tour- naments, both highly regarded in the Potomac Rugby Union. It was evident that both the physical and mental aspects of play were reconstructed this season, for nearly half of the club’s victories were come from behind wins. Much of the success of the season is credited to Team Captain Rudy Buckheit, who gave good, well run prac- tices as a primary cause for such a phenomenal record. On the road to being undefeated Loyola left many re- spected teams scowling in their footsteps, including top rival Towson, BACON, St. Joseph’s, and Holy Cross. The club bids farewell and good luck to graduating seniors Jim Farrell, Steve Larcher, Tim Madey, Brian McCaw, Joe Morel, Jim Schuette, and Scott Fridley. In addition, a special thanks and farewell are due to Coach William “Loc” Vetter. The 1983 fall season was the lady ruggers’ most successful to dtitc, sporting a 10-3 record. The ladies were also sueeessful at the trtidilional Washington Tournament, where they had wins over NOVA and Towson in double overtime. A loss to Philadel- phia set the ruggers in fourth place. This was a great improve- ment over the previous three tournament years. With 1 1 new and 23 returning players, the team completed the season with victories over Mount St. Mary ' s, Westminster (twice) and Rutgers University. Losses included Chesapeake and University of Md. This season’s team exhibited great team work and skill. The club carried four members who qualified for the Potomac Rugby Union Select Side; Lorraine Verderaime, Genny Nulph, Talia Cortada and Margie Flather. The lady ruggers pla yed a strenuous and challenging season and overcame both the absence of a coach and a field. With its mounting popularity, new and challenging teams to play, and enthusiasm from members, the club looks forward to a very promising and victorious spring season. 70 Women ' s Fall Rugby Women ' s Fall Rugby 71 Women’s Spring Rugby Front Row: Sharon McLaughlin, Gina Naisley, Beth McNulty, Joy Del Rosario, Cathy Lapadula, Lynn Freeze, Joan Brault. Though the Greyhounds did not receive their much hoped for bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament, a bid many observers felt they deserved. Coach Bill Sento’s nationally ranked team posted a 17-3 record against a solid Division I 1 schedule. The squad captured the ECAC Metro Conference Title for the j second straight year. Except for a few slips, the booters ! moved methodically through the sched- ule. Carrying a 5-0 record into its own ! tournament in late September, Eoyola I blanked St. Johns in the opening round t before being tripped by an explosive N.C. State squad in the final minutes of the championship. The Greyhounds bounced back with convincing wins over f Maryland and Georgetown before fall- I ing to American University on October f 8. The team then began a stretch of eight straight wins, seven of them shutouts, before dropping its final game of the reg- ular season to much improved George Washington. The Eoyola defense, which surren- dered only 1 1 goals throughout the sea- son, was anchored by two seniors, goalie Bryan McPhee and fullback Craig Cal- linan. McPhee capped his four year ca- reer by recording 78 saves and a school record of 12 shutouts while boasting a 0.45 goals allowed average. He was drafted by the Baltimore Blasts of the Major Indoor Soccer Eeague. Callinan, another four year starter and three-time tri-captain as well, was a defensive stal- wart and team leader. He also provided an offensive punch, notching seven goals and six assists, on the way to being hon- ored as a third team All American selec- tion. Junior striker Tom Rafferty, for the first time in his Loyola career, did not lead the team in scoring this season. The offensive output was spread evenly among the front line, composed entirely of juniors. Greg Zsebedics led the team with 12 goals and four assists, while Vince Griffith pumped in ten goals and added six feeds. Rafferty finished with eight goals and six assists. Halfback Tony Butta joins McPhee and Callinan as the only graduating starters. So, with sophomore Peter Vin- ton and freshman standout Stan Koziol returning along with a productive front line and a proven defense, Loyola should continue its climb to the top of the colle- giate soccer ranks. Freshman David Gately’s 29 points in i the opener was the highest total posted by a Hound in a game all year, and the team’s 124 set an all time Loyola mark. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-2 j start, but ran into trouble by losing their next four games, all on the road. But If they bouneed back at home, winning j three straight in the Evergreen Gymna- sium, tagged in its final year as “The Doghouse.’’ This stretch exemplified the I sueeess Loyola had at home: with rekin- I died fan enthusiasm, the Hound “Dog- house” record for the season was a terrif- ic I 1-2, the losses being heartbreakers to rival Mt. St. Mary ' s and Farleigh Dick- inson. Immediately after this last setback, Loyola went on an impressive tear, de- feating Wagner, Brooklyn, St. Francis (NY), Long Island, Marist, and Siena to end the regular season. The game against Siena was the last played in the Evergreen Gymnasium. Seniors Steve Rossiter, Dave Urban, and Phil Lazzati were honored before the Hounds wiped out the Indians, 82-62. Loyola then trav- eled to Poughkeepsie, NY and lost to host Marist College in the first round of the ECAC Metro Conference Tourna- ment, ending a successful one year climb to Division I respectability. The 1 983-84 Greyhounds started four freshmen throughout the year: Gately, Tommy Lee, Aubrey Reveley, and ECAC Metro Rookie of the Year Tom Gormlcy. Their inspired play was a key to the Hounds ' winning record. Maurice Hicks provided leadership and scoring punch from the bench, while Rossiter and transfer Kevin Carter proved to be dependable reserves. Urban added ex- perience as he started with the four freshmen. Lazzati and freshman Mike Savage were the team’s only two walk on players. Blending all these elements into a winner were Mark Amatucci (the con- ference’s Coach of the Year) and his as- sistants. Loyola ' s ECAC Metro Conference record of 10-6 was good for a third place finish, the best in their three years of conference play. Greyhound fans can look forward to more winning in the new “Lefty” Reitz Arena. In addition to strengthening its position and stature among regularly scheduled teams, the team also finished a respectable fifth in its first appearance at the previously all male Tri-State Championships. Loyola also finished fourth at the Maryland State Championships. Although hampered by illnesses and injuries all season long, the team recieved strong performances from returning swimmers Shelley Cos- grove, Peggy Fonshell, Mary Anne Hartman, and Gina De Stefano. Second year Head Coach Dave Cottle ' s Greyhounds finished with a 10- 4 season mark. The wins were only one victory shy of the school record of 11, which was set in 1 979 and again in 1981. 1 984 was quite a turnaround from just a year ago, when the team finished at 5-9. Loyola accomplished this remarkable achievement with a young squad consist- ing of nineteen underclassmen, includ- ing fourteen freshmen. Coach Cottle lost only four seniors to graduation, and with the nucleus of talent that he has put to- gether, the Greyhounds will be shooting for their first appearance in the NCAA playoffs in 1985. The season was marked by several highlights, one of which was an opening victory over Penn State. The team won eight of their last ten games, including a victory over nationally ranked Adelphi in the finals of the Loyola College Invi- tational Tournament. Another high point in the season was the victory over UMBC, which was the first time the Hounds had defeated the Retrievers since 1973. The Greyhounds were led on offense by sophomore attackman Pat Lamon, with 42 goals and 18 assists, and fresh- man attackman Dave Kasemeyer, with 27 goals and 31 assists. The defensive leader was All-American candidate, goalie Vinnie Pfeifer. Pfeifer recorded 183 saves, allowing only 92 goals for a percentage of .665. For the 683 freshmen, questions were an- swered and uncertainties lessened by the helpful advice of the orientation staff, headed by Father Shea and Mike Avia. The days were spent in small group sessions and campus tours, in addition to faculty presen- tations for each of the majors. The students were then treated to a pizza party and a mixer at night. The activities culminated in the night at the Inner Harbor, before the freshmen had to get ready for their first day of classes at Loyola. Which way to Financial Aid? On September 16, Loyola students showed their more radical side as they attended the Punk Party, sponsored by Circle K and ASLC SGA Social Affairs. The mixer, organized by Peggy Willis and Ted Miles, was held for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. Truly showing the Punk theme, students came dressed in everything from miniskirts and narrow ties to safety pins and dyed hair. Dressed up or not, everyone enjoyed the new wave sound of the band “Strangelove.” 1 16 Punk Party Port Welcome Cruise Ship Ahoy! Loyola students took to the water for the Port Welcome Cruise on September 17. As the beer and wine flowed, the sellout crowd of 400 danced to the popular music of “Fastbreak.” The boat eruised through the Inner Harbor, five miles past the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Sponsored by Ted Miles and his ASLC SGA Social Affairs department, the cruise was a tremendous success and is sure to become an annual event. Once again, the masters were in complete control and would inflict clean, good-natured abuse on their hounds in celebration of Hound Day 1983. Many masters took advan- tage of the early morning by having their breakfast in bed, humbly served by their hounds. During the day, the hounds stood out on campus, dressed in various costumes chosen by their masters — some degrading, some funny, but all embarrassing. On Friday afternoon, the slave drivers-for-a-day followed the theme “Run Your Hound into the Ground” through various activities which showed, if anything, the hounds’ good sportsman- ship. The hounds then dis- played their theatrical abili- ties at 7:30, when they per- formed skits and musical numbers in Jenkins Forum. Top prize went to the group who sang “If 1 were not a Loyola Hound.” The festivi- ties concluded with the Hound Day Mixer sponsored by the Men ' s Rugby Club, featuring the band Jeffrey. With a little tolerance and a good sense of humor, the hounds survived their initi- ation into resident life at Loyola. Hound Day 121 On the night of October 27, Loyola celebrated Halloween at the Monster Bash. The mixer attract- ed the traditional ghouls and goblins, as well as many other strange and unusual characters. Prizes were awarded for a number of categories, including Most Original — Missy Hormes as an Oreo cookie: Best Overall — Matt Darby and Danny Cahill as a pair of lottery balls. A raffle was also held for an all- expense paid dinner for two at the Hyatt Regency. The event featured the music of “Secret Service.” 1 22 Monster Bash Dance Marathon We need your donations, The Dance Marathon started at noon on Friday, November 1 1; and for twelve hours, determined Loyola couples danced to raise money for a boys’ home in Baltimore, A Place for Us, and The Good Shepherd Center, a home for emotionally disturbed girls. The event, sponsored by Students Concerned for Exceptional Children (SCEC), featured a mixer in the evening with music by “Appaloosa.” All the couples succeeded in finishing, with Reesi Rommel and Pat Kelly collecting the most donations. The of- fice of V.P. of Social Affairs was filled by Nelson Carey, who defeated Kevin McCann in a close race. Due to a confusion with grades and transition of jobs, the A.S.L.C. and Commissioner Mark Tozzi decided to postpone the elections for A.S.L.C. Loy- ola College recognized the 350th anniversary of the founding of Maryland with a week-long cele- bration which culminated with Maryland Day, March 16. Father Novotny celebrated a mass commemorating this special occasion in the morning. At 2:00 that afternoon, representatives of the ASLC SGA, led by ASLC President Dora Bankins, read from a scroll 350 reasons why they like Maryland. Closing ceremonies were held in the Alumni Memorial Chapel, where music for the processional was performed by the Annapolis Brass Quintet and the Loyola Belles and Chimes. Several awards were presented, including the An- drew White Medal, which was es- tablished to recognize Maryland citizens who have lived in the spirit of the great pioneer Father An- drew White, those who have dis- tinguished themselves through their public service toward their fellow Marylanders. Undergrad- uates selected for inclusion in Who ' s Who Among Students in .American Colleges and Universi- ties were also honored. The Senior Crab Feast, held from 2-6 p.m. on the Butler Hall parking lot, was the beginning of a year-long cele- bration for the seniors — their final two semesters at Loyola College. It was a time to start reminiscing about their past three years and a time to start looking forward to even more memories that lay ahead. Senior Crab Feast 219 Senior 100 Nights Senior 100 Nights was yet another welcome reminder of graduation for the class of 1984. Held in the cafeteria on February 18, the event coincidentally fell exactly one hundred nights before the big day. The night ' s entertainment included numerous one-liners and a Car- nak routine. One skit featured Doreen Desmarais and friends portraying sever- al senior guys. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the presentation to Dave Glenn of the award for “Most Likely to be Elected President.” Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right. 220 Senior 100 Nights Senior 100 Nights 221 Senior Week With graduation only seven days away, the Seniors commemorated the end of their four years at Loyola with a week long celebration. Senior Week started on May 20 with a cocktail party in the Jesuit Residence sponsored by the Jesuit community. The Alumni Association held a reception in Jenkins Forum on May 21. It was Senior Night at the Rat on May 22 and at Ganders on May 23, where everyone celebrated their last finals ever at Loyola. The Senior Prom took place on May 24, and the week culminated with the Baccalaureate Mass on May 26 and Commencement Exercises on May 27. Senior Week 223 SL V Treasurer Keith Filch, never seen with less than two women. Caught you - - FI Senior Week 225 Senior Week 227 Senior Prom We can sit up straight, we just don’t want to. 228 Senior Prom Two drinks and two dates. The reminiscing and celebrating continued as the Class of 1 984 gathered for their Senior Prom on May 29 at the Balti- more Hilton. Planned by Senior Class President Bill Weir and Representatives Doreen Desmarais and John Heeb, the event was one of the highlights of Senior Week, topped only by graduation. The band “Jeffrey” provided the music for the evening, but most of the entertainment certainly came from the company of good friends who had made the past four years unforgettable and worthwhile. s Senior Prom 229 Senior Prom 231 Baccalaureate Mass The Seniors, their families, and the faculty and admin- istration of Loyola assembled for the Baccalaureate Mass on May 26 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. The saying “What is past is prologue truly applied to the evening, for it was an occasion to thank God for the memo- rable time spent at Loyola as well as to ask for His direc- tion in the years to come. Father Sellinger was the princi- pal celebrant of the mass, and Father Novotny was the homilist. 232 Baccalaureate Mass Father Novotny delivers the homily. Baccalaureate Mass 233 Commencement “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” Charles Dick- ens’ immortal words rang true as four years at Loyola College came to a close for the Class of 1984. The 135th Commencement Exer- cises were held on May 27 at the Baltimore Civic Center. The announcement that Pam Meluh had achieved a perfect 4.0 average in four years earned her a standing ovation from her fellow classmates. In all, 880 graduates received their degrees, including three sets of twins and a mother- daughter team. The guest speaker was Peter Jennings, who advised the graduates, “Do not blink. Do not miss anything that is going on around you.” Indeed, Mr. Jen- nings’ words would surely be re- membered as the Class of 1984 prepared to enter “the real world.” t, Commencement 235 236 Commencement Four years of hard work in this envelope. These goals were considered in the planning of the 1984 Evergreen Annual, and my mission was to paint a picture of the changing environment on campus. 1 challenged my staff to produce a yearbook of quality and excellence as a model for the future by upgrading the quality, layout, contents, and design, to reflect the various activities and personalities around campus. The staff members’ dedicated labor behind the scenes can only now be rewarded as I take this occasion to express my gratitude for their loyalty and contributions. This effort would not have been possible without each and every one of them. My Copy Editor, Rosa Mallonga, was my right hand and her contributions in organizing the copy staff and editing all copy personally to ensure its quality and accuracy were para- mount. In addition, she has been consistently helpful with the constant administrative decisions and problems. 1 knew 1 could always rely on her ready help during a tight situation. I have the greatest respect for her perseverence and conscientiousness. I know it will stand her in good stead in any career she may choose. Lisa Price, the Business Manager, did an outstanding job of soliciting sponsors and advertisements to defray the tremendous cost of production. Her campaign was arduous and her dedica- tion to our cause paid off significantly. It is difficult to measure any phase of our behind the scenes efforts on a scale, but photography played the key role in pre- senting this school year for your future reminiscences. Jeff Le- vine and Talia Cortada, Photography Co-Editors, worked in harmony to provide ample pictures of the highest quality. Jeff spent innumerable hours on the phone scheduling club photos. Talia organized all the Eaculty photo sessions and was always available on short notice to fill in whereever needed. Photo- graphic expertise was donated by Paul Merenbloom, Phil Rink, and Jody Willard who always scrambled to cover an important event and supplied shots of professional quality. Long time staff members Celia Cortada and Lorraine Verderaime always had their cameras ready at the right moment to capture that special candid shot. They had a lot of ground to cover and they covered it splendidly. From the thousands of photos accumulated throughout thej year, difficult choices had to be made by our layout staff toj create the very best representation which was also artistically] displayed. Karen Bertness worked long and hard to meet the! deadlines for the Clubs and Organizations section. Carla O’Brien undertook the monumental task of redesigning the Fac- ulty and Administration section. She conceived a new spacei saving design that was in accord with our predetermined quality standards. | Linda Hallmen, Student Life Editor, and Cindy Habart, Sen- ' ior Section Editor, along with her assistant Maureen Gillen.! were responsible for the layout of the most meaningful parts of] the book. They each contributed many long hours designing and] revising the page plans. Tina Dickinson, Sports Editor, lived upj to her past reputation for excellence by blending together the| necessary elements for an exciting Sports Section. Although 1 cannot name them all individually, I wish to thank all the various student contributors and other staff membersj, who pitched in when the going got rough. || As always, there are those without whose influence and sup| port this achievement could not have been possible. Father Den-I nis Linehan, my faculty advisor, was always generous with his warm guidance. We will all miss him and I personally want to wish him much happiness and success with his appointment at The University of Scranton. My confidence to accept the red sponsibility of Editor-in-Chief was gained under the tutelage olj two-time Editor Terry Zic. Mr. Coy Harris, the Sales Represen- tative for Herff Jones Publishing Co., was most helpful witfi advice on all aspects of our project. Lastly, I wish to express my| thanks to my parents for their encouragement and understands ing throughout the past year. To my fellow students and especially to the Graduates, I hope ' this Evergreen will be a lasting symbol and a most enjoyablti reflection of the year on the campus of Loyola. I wish you al every success in your future endeavors and may the memory ol these college days co ntinue to inspire you to greater heights. | 272 Editor’s Letter
