Loyola College is dedicated to “Strong Truths Well Lived.” As an institution Loyola is committed to the intellectual search for Truth; however, not as an end in itself. The search for Truth is an integral part of human life. Truth is sought for the sake of living better as human beings. For many students Mr. Thomas E. Scheye is symbolic of Loyola. He is a man committed to the intellectual life. This commitment is evident to anyone who knows him or has been taught by him. As he speaks of Shakespeare, Milton or O’Neil, Mr. Scheye demonstrates a passionate love of the human mind and all that it can uncover or imagine. In his work as Academic Vice President Mr. Scheye ' s concern for intellectual excellence has been manifest in many of the projects he has undertaken and programs he has initiated. But Mr. Scheye, like Loyola, is not interested in the intellec- tual life for its own sake. He is interested in the intellectual life as it helps us in human living. He is a man who is concerned with the well-being of the students. Mr. Scheye exudes a care for students; in the classroom, as he walks around the campus, in his Freshman Seminar , and in his work as Academic Vice Presi- dent. As he personifies some of the most important aspects of Loy- ola College, it is fitting that the 1983 Evergreen Annual be dedicated to Mr. Thomas E. Scheye, Ph.D. Dedication 7
