Evergreen Annual for the Academic Year 1982-1983 Loyola College 4501 North Charles Street Baltimore, Maryland 21210 MCMLXXX111 I will remember you, For the late nights, and telephone conversations; For that shared drink, and tender secret; For being unexpected, unpredictable and nothing but yourself. For making me cry then laugh, despite the tears; For giving me the hope of spring and the warmth of summer, I will remember you. And in each of the moments, I will treasure you, as my friend. The search for Truth is an integral part of human life. Truth is sought for the sake of living better as human beings. For many students Mr. Thomas E. Scheye is symbolic of Loyola. He is a man committed to the intellectual life. This commitment is evident to anyone who knows him or has been taught by him. As he speaks of Shakespeare, Milton or O’Neil, Mr. Scheye demonstrates a passionate love of the human mind and all that it can uncover or imagine. In his work as Academic Vice President Mr. Scheye ' s concern for intellectual excellence has been manifest in many of the projects he has undertaken and programs he has initiated. But Mr. Scheye, like Loyola, is not interested in the intellec- tual life for its own sake. He is interested in the intellectual life as it helps us in human living. He is a man who is concerned with the well-being of the students. Mr. Scheye exudes a care for students; in the classroom, as he walks around the campus, in his Freshman Seminar , and in his work as Academic Vice Presi- dent. As he personifies some of the most important aspects of Loy- ola College, it is fitting that the 1983 Evergreen Annual be dedicated to Mr. Thomas E. Scheye, Ph.D. Dedication 7 8 Baltimorc The Pratt Street Pavilion and the U.S.F. Many simple but important projects were completed in an attempt to enhance the beauty of Loyola’s grounds. The main entrance to the College was expanded, and a new traffic light was installed to facilitate student crossings at the Charles Street entrance. Other improvements included laying of new drainage pipes, the construction of a new stor- age building for the Physical Plant, and the dredg- ing of the library pond. The most important and ambitious construction project of the last ten years was begun this year. Fr. Sellinger and several other dignitaries participated in ground breaking ceremonies for the new De- Chiaro Student Center, which is scheduled for com- pletion by the spring of 1 984. The new Center will be the largest and most expensive structure ever on Loyola’s acerage. Construction 17 1 8 Studcnt Life How many men from Physical Plant does it take to change a light bulb? Scheye, Ph.D. Academic Vice President “My theme is memory.” This is a book of memories, to be leafed through casually at first but carried along through the rest of your life — one day consigned to the shelf or stored in the attic and forgotten — until sometime it is rediscovered. And if the spine creaks, if the pages have mildewed, some of the memories will be fresh, still alive. What will you remember from those years at Loyola? Some of the practical things you learned along the way — how to ask for a room with bath in a foreign country or solve an equation, how to read a balance sheet or explain the Civil War. But all of that translates to marks on a transcript, not memories. What you are likelier to remember is the teacher you got by, the term paper you stayed up all night to write, the exam you passed on two hour’s study, the class you cut to sleep or finish a game or lie in the sun and contemplate the breeze blowing. Your taking liberties like that is not exactly what your teachers had in mind by liberal arts education, but it is not far off. All of it sounds less practical 1 know. After all you came to college because you were convinced you needed a diploma to succeed and chose courses that would help you ride the comput- er wave or pass the CPA exam or get into med school. But on that day in the future when you look back to Loyola, those practical decisions aren’t going to seem so very practical or decisive anymore. If you are like most people who ever went to college, there is at least one day from the past four years you will always remem- ber, a good friend you will never lose and, if you are very lucky, an idea or inspiration that changed the way you thought about yourself or viewed the world or lived your life. Loyola’s hope for you is that someday you are the kind of person who does look back that way, who remembers and re- flects, someone who values, in Matthew Arnold’s abiding phrase, “the free play of the mind upon all subjects.” That is the vision underlying the liberal arts: to liberate, to make you free. The skills you need to make a living are part of that vision. In their origin, the liberal arts referred precisely to the arts or skills that were the province of free men as opposed to the work which was performed by slaves. In our time the distinction still holds. College has prepared you for a good job, though not only in the sense you had in mind when you came to college. A good job means more than one that pays well; it involves good work, work that is useful and fulfilling, that involves service as well as self, that challenges you to become the most you can attain, that harnesses your energies to an ideal. That is what is meant by the work of free men and women. Freedom also implies leisure, time free from the necessities of getting and spending. The liberal arts are meant to be instruc- tive for making a good living but also for living a good life. There is no formula for either of course. In your work you will acquire skills undreamed of when this is being written; living a good life is also an acquired skill. Much of what you learned in college was meant to help. The liberal arts do not provide a road map to comfort and happiness though. Their appeal is more oblique and subtle. Those courses which may have seemed irrelevant because they supplied no useful information, no practical skills, were issuing a challenge. Their subject matter was beauty or truth, or perhaps beauty and truth, and their challenge was to raise questions, the very questions you asked yourself and then evaded for more immediate pursuits. Suppose that what Shakespeare and Socra- tes are saying is true, you asked yourself, what does that have to do with me? In other words, if this is true what should I do about it? Exactly! You will probably never know the answer to those questions for sure, but what is more sure is that you will spend a good part of your life trying to answer them. It will be time well spent. Faculty Administration 37 The Character of ’83 By Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J. Instructor of Philosophy Any group of people, from random aggregates on a train to loving families in the home, has a personality, a character. What is the personality of this class of 1 983 of Loyola College? What is its distinct mark? One answer comes to mind, one dominant trait — as a group you are diverse. This diversity has been good for you and for the rest of us at Loyola. It has been three dimensional; manifesting itself in mutual support, mutual re- spect, and mutual creativity. Because you are diverse, no one group has come to dominate the character of your class. Instead, many groups have contrib- uted to your life in the past four years, providing mutual sup- port. As you have worked through the travails of choosing a major, registering for courses, enduring difficult teachers, ex- periencing romances, and searching for a job, you have found support, from friends and from unexpected sources. A person whom you may have known only in passing gave you some advice, a kind word, or a helping hand when you needed but least expected it. Your diversity has also led you to discover and respect the varieties of human experience. Human beings are a strange species. Each person is a mystery. No two are the same. In many ways your class exemplifies human reality. As a group you are made up of many sub-groups. But these smaller groupings are only rarely exclusive. Most of you belong to many groups. This criss-crossing has helped you to respect the varieties of human beings. During the years you have been together at Loyola, you have encountered many different people; you have met them outside your normal circle of friends, in your classes or at par- ties. How often have you said to a friend: “I used to think he was strange, but after I got to know him in class I discovered he’s nice.” So this diversity has taught you to respect the uniqueness of each person, even those not in your group. As you have experienced such diversity, you have learned to appreciate the creativity of human beings. You have learned that diverse viewpoints, backgrounds, and talents, make prob- lem solving much easier. You have been able to learn from one another, and you have learned to pool your talents to raise money for proms or organize “Dog Day Afternoons.” In the future we hope your creative diversity will continue to support the life of Loyola and will contribute to the life of the American Republic. Such diversity fuels creativity and makes solving the world’s problems much easier. Your diversity comes as no surprise to us. In fact, it is a refreshing reminder of something we learned long ago and still believe: that God created each person to be an image of His infinite existence. Your diversity reflects the diversity of man- kind. In The Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius Loyola asks the retreatant to see the world as God sees it, a world filled with many various people: “in such variety, in dress as in actions; some white and others black; some in peace and others in war; some weeping and others laughing; some well, others ill; some being born and others dying.” ( 106) Each person is different, valuable, and important as each is of God and brings God into the world. The Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote: for Christ plays in ten thousand places, Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his To the Father through the features of men ' s faces. ( 34) As you leave, we thank you for reminding us of the mystery of diversity. This has been your character. Our hope is that it will remain your character. As you move through the “real” world welcome all persons for the rich mystery they are. Offer your support, your respect, and your creativity to them the way you have offered it to one another. If you do the world will be the better place of our dreams. English, Fine Arts Writing Carol N. Abromaitis — Associate Professor Mary G. Atherton — Assistant Professor James E. The team compiled a 5-4 overall record, which was a pleasant surprise considering the caliber of the competition. The Loyola team was defeated by area rival, Towson State, in the final minutes of an intense match, and was taught a solid lesson in rugby by the United States Naval Academy. However, Loyola handily defeated collegiate ri- vals Boston College, Mount St. Mary’s, and George Mason. Against men’s clubs, Loyola faired evenly; losing by penalty kicks after dominating both Division II Baltimore County, a team stacked with Loyola College veterans, and Old Red, a Division I perennial power. Loyola was able to stop a final scoring drive by the Hagerstown Red’s to pull out a 9-7 victory and completely shutdown Division I Chesapeake, in their final stand on Butler Field. The Loyola RFC continued to beat the odds by finishing fourth out of the twelve clubs in the College Division of the Potomac Rugby Union. Player determination and incredible fan turnout, as well as consistent support from the student government, helped to counteract the effects of the loss of a home field, the absence of a coach, and inadequate practice facilities. 90 Men’s Fall Rugby Men’s Spring Rugby Front Row: Scott Trivett, Joe Graziano, Rob Fitzgerald, Steve Larcher, Mike Norton, Tim Madey, Andy Aitken, Kenny Ames, Gil Digioia. The Club was honored with the A.S.L.C.’s Club of the Year Award for out- standing service, surpassing its purpose as a Rugby Club. The Club finished with a 12-3-1 overall record, and won their own tournament, The Jesuit Invitational, by defeating Holy Cross in an overtime final 13-7. Loyola also placed second in the eight team Mount St. Mary’s Tournament. Loyola was rated third, behind the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland, in the Baltimore-Washington- Virginia Area standing by Rugby Magazine. While on their way to this placement, Loyola de- feated Towson State, Southern Maryland, Shippensburg State, Salisbury State, Catholic University, and St. John’s of New York. Loyola outscored their opponents 266- 75; scoring 45 tries while letting up only 8. Loyola will surely miss this year ' s graduat- ing seniors who contributed 232 of the total 266 points. The Loyola R.F.C. bids barewell and good luck to these graduating seniors: Andy Aitken, Kenny Ames, Jed Davis, Jeff Def- finbaugh, Gil Digioia, Chris DiMiao, Jim Gilbert, Jimmy Jones, Mark McCoy, Mark Miller, John Molli, Mike Morley, Mike Norton, Jim Schuette, Fergus Sugrue, Dennis Sullivan. 92 Men’s Spring Rugby Men’s Spring Rugby 93 Women’s Fall Rugby Front Row: Paige Arnold, Nancy Morgan, Dawn Maxey, Melissa Valenzuela, Jill Long, Wendy Myerly, Karen Clabby, Peggy Fonshell. The Women’s Rugby Club opened their fall season with the tradition- al Washington Tournament. Although they did not capture the silver cup, the club played well throughout the tourney. The girls played NOVA (Northern Virginia), Towson State, and Philadelphia. Unfortu- nately, the lady ruggers were only able to bring home a victory over NOVA. This was, however, an improvement over last year’s tournament. The team completed the rest of the season with an impressive 5-4 record. They defeated NOVA twice, Franklin and Marshall, Catholic University, and Mount St. Mary’s. Losses were recorded at the hands of Towson State (twice), the New Jersey Cheerio’s, and Philadelphia. Throughout the fall season the club demonstrated great team work and an improvement in talent. This year’s team carried four members who qualified for the Potomac Rugby Union Select Side. The team made equal use of old and new recruits which provided the team with enough talent to challenge bigger and better clubs. The lady ruggers played a challenging and strenuous season in the fall with great success. The growing popularity of the team will unquestiona- bly mean a larger and even more competitive squad for the spring season. 94 Women’s Fall Rugby jHf VI wLiz mm (IT ' Wl wBrWk li, V M V ' Celia and Talia Cortada move in for the kill. The Loyola Women’s Rugby Club can be very proud of their 1983 Spring season. Nineteen players from the fall squad returned to the pitch for the spring. They were joined by an equal number of new recruits, and together they were able to complete a very respectable 6-2-2 record. Led by coach Merilee Schuman, the lady ruggers overcame excellent op- ponents such as Towson State and the Washington Furies. The season ended with an invitation to the 1983 Preakness Tournament. The girls capped their efforts with an impressive tournament victory that brought the trophy home. The team earned some well deserved respect this season and should be a force to be reckoned with in the future of area women’s rugby. A fond farewell was bid to seniors Beth “Lucy” Phaup, Judy Ogai- tis, and Denise Montiel. 96 Women’s Spring Rugby Women’s Spring Rugby 97 Surely you know that many runners take part in a race, but only one of them wins the prize. Coach Bill Sen- to ' s club posted an 11-7-1 record against one of the toughest schedules Loyola has faced in recent memory, and captured the ECAC Metro Confer- ence Championship in its final game. The boosters’ season was highlighted by sever- al exciting victories. In the third contest of the year against LaSalle, the Greyhounds stormed back from a 0-1 deficit with five secondhalf tal- lies to produce a 5-2 win. The Greyhounds also gave their fans a memorable Homecoming game, as Vince Griffith’s second half score gave Loyola a 1-0 win over the University of Baltimore in a defensive struggle. And in a game that will prob- ably be remembered for years to come, the Grey- hounds exploded for three goals in just 38 seconds during the second overtime to stun James Madi- son. As memorable as those wins were, though, Loyola’s proudest moment came in defeat. Against powerful Duke University, ranked sec- ond in the nation at the time, the Greyhounds played the game of their lives, battling the Blue Devils in a marathon contest that went into the second overtime before bowing a 2-1 score. In that game, junior goalkeeper Bryan McPhee was brilliant, making 1 4 saves on one diving stop after another to keep the ' Hounds in the game. McPhee was one of several outstanding per- formers for the Greyhounds during the season. He recorded five shutouts and compiled a 1.1 goals per game average, making sure Loyola was within striking distance at all times. Sophomore Tom Rafferty was the Team ' s top scorer for the second straight year with 14 goals and 6 assists. Junior fullback Craig Callinan was second in scoring for the ' Hounds, and was the leader of a solid defensive corps along with sophomore full- back Marvin Branch and junior Chris Gaeng. Tri-captains Callinan, Gaeng, and senior Tom Vitrano were a steadying influence for the young club. The Greyhounds closed the season in style, de- feating the University of Baltimore 2-1 for the ECAC Metro Conference title. Rafferty scored the winning goal late in the game, and McPhee turned in a stellar 10-save performance in the nets. With nearly all of the main cogs returning, next year’s club should produce what Loyola fans have come to expect — exciting, winning soccer. Not so for Loyola’s field hockey team. Coach Sharon McLaughlin took a squad com- posed of six freshmen, seven sophomores, and five juniors, and guided them to a highly respectable 8-7 record. This year, the team looked to the juniors for leadership, and found it there in abundance. Junior Erin Keavney led the Lady Greyhounds in scoring with 10 goals for the season. Jennifer Ferra, another third year player, was second with six scores. Goalkeeper, Mary Pat Osborne, turned in her third consecutive superb season minding the nets. Juniors Margie Colandreo and Gabrielle Grant provided the young squad with some much needed experience. Of the younger players, sophomore Beany Gavin and fresh- man Teddi Willis played solidly all season. Two members of the team earned honors as Osborne and Willis to the All-Maryland field hockey team. For coach Cec Morrison’s club, however, the crowning achievement of the season was the berth it earned to the EAIAW tournament. Further recognition of the team’s excellence came when one of its players, sopho- more Laura Fludson, was nominated for the N.C.A.A. All America Team. The women got off to their best start ever (7-1), and came on strong at the end of the season. After dropping its first four meets, the team gave Washington College a tough time before bowing by a 30-26 count. In their next match the Greyhounds swept the top three places in defeating the University of Balti- more, 30-26. The team was competitive in its final two matches, but came up short against Coppin State and Johns Hopkins. Jack Guilfoyle put forth his usual winning perfor- mance again this season finishing first in three meets, second in two, and third in one. Dennis Sullivan and Jose Albornoz also had outstanding seasons crossing the finish line in record time. Despite its 4-24 record however, the team made considerable progress during the course of the season, and pro- vided Loyola fans with excitement and cause for optimism for the following year. Under new head coach Mark Ama- tucci, the Greyhounds got off to a shaky start against the likes of Iona, Rich- mond, and St. Peter’s, all teams that had made it to the National Invitational Tournament the previous year. That’s a tall order for any team to tackle, and for the Greyhounds, playing in the N.C. A.A.’s Division I for only the second year, it proved to be too much to handle. Without an early victory to build confi- dence, the young team soon found itself in the midst of a long losing streak that would eventually reach 17 games. Par- ticularly disheartening were a pair of two-point losses, one on the road at St. Francis (PA), and one to Robert Morris in overtime. Some teams would give up under such circumstances, but Loyola, under the in- spiration and hustle of senior team cap- tain and most valuable player Stave Ma- lecki, came on during the latter part of the season. The losing streak came to an end with a victory over the University of Baltimore. The team later put together a three game winning streak, including a thrilling 67-66 win at home over Wagner in which junior forward Steve Rossiter came through with a career high 28 points. The team’s final victory, a 92-84 win over Towson State, saw sophomore point guard Maurice Hicks turn in a dazzling 35 point effort. Another bright spot for the Grey- hounds was the play of freshman Kevin House, who led the team with a 15.0 scoring average. Junior Dave Urban played a steady and sometimes spectac- ular game. And senior guard Tom Tier- ney survived a shaky start to remain Loyola’s best marksman from long range. Anyone who followed the team closely would say that the Greyhounds of March were far superior to the Grey- hounds of November. For Amatucci, this means that the season was not a total disaster, because the foundation for fu- ture winning teams was begun with this year’s squad. Head coach Rev. James Donahoe’s team captured the titles of the Loyola Invitational and the Roy Rog- ers Tournament within an eight-day span en route to an 1 1-14 final record. The Greyhounds stayed above the .500 mark for most of the year, and only a late-season seven-game losing streak kept them from having a winning record. Loyola’s biggest win was also its most exciting. Against Towson State in the Loyola Invitational championship game, the Greyhounds rallied from a seven-point deficit to pull out a 51-48 victory. The following weekend, the squad took the Roy Rogers Tournament with a rout of U.M.B.C. in the final. Juniors Peggy Kettles and Lisa Maletic spearheaded the squad. Team MVP Kettles led Loyola in scoring (10.6) and rebounding (8.4) from her forward position, and Maletic con- tributed 1 0 points per game while providing steady leadership at point guard. The young team looked to its only seniors, tri- captain Mary Jo McVey, for experience, and freshman sharp- shooter Maureen McHugh was a bright new face. With virtually everyone returning, the team promises im- provement for future seasons. 116 Women’s Basketball bp. if i £ i |i V - j- i ::ll jgit - . i r l ARBI 1 t f K iPT vi % ' ■ - |H 5v. j r w )m r ' 11 — — — my- J s w , V Vi 1 LaJ 1 r I Women’s Basketball 117 Men’s Swimming Front Row: Amy Rakaczky, Bob St. Ledger, Vincent Wroblewski, Brian Bernat, Mark Ziolkowski, Erik Van Nostrand, John Hoyt, Pat Connor. After a 9-6 regular season, the squad recorded a second-place finish in the Tri-State Championships, its best in several years. And three of the team’s seniors received post- season honors. Co-captain George Hedner, the team ' s MVP who finished his career second on the all-time point list for Loyola swimmers, was honored by his fellow Loyola athletes with the Mohler trophy, given each year to the top senior male scholar athlete. Co-captain Bob St. Ledger won the ROTC Leadership Award, and diver Vince Wroblewski, who took first place at the Tri- States in the three-meter diving, was honored at graduation with the Greyhound Club Scholar Athlete Award, given to the varsity athlete with the highest grade point average. Also instrumental to the team’s success was sophomore Mark Ziolkowski, who is destined to finish near the top of the all-time point list before he graduates. Seniors Joe Tilghman and Mike Sawicki also played important roles in helping the squad to one of its best seasons in recent years. Coach Tom Murphy will be hard-pressed to replace his graduating seniors, but Mark Ziolkowski leads a strong nucleus back for next season. 120 Men’s Swimming Men’s Swimming 121 Women’s Swimming Front Row: Amy Rakaczky, Ellen O’Connor, Patricia Merkert, Christine Kearns, Cynthia Ann Preis, Peggy Fonshell, Beth Sudassy. In its seventh season of varsity competition, the team posted a record of 5-7, its best ever, and appeared ready to have had a winning record if a couple of close meets (Loyola lost to Georgetown by one point and to American by three) had gone the Greyhounds’ way. The team won two of its first three meets, including victories over Goucher and York, before suffering five straight losses. Coach Tom Murphy’s women closed with a flourish, however, by winning three of their last four matches. They finished a respectable fourth at the MAIAW swimming and diving cham- pionships, and broke eight school records during the competi- tion. Dependable veterans Tricia Merkert, Shelley Cosgrove, Peg- gy Fonshell, Barb Bagliani, Dawn Buttion, and Julie McGann helped form the nucleus of the team. Freshman Gina DeStefano was sensational, setting 22 school records by herself and 7 more as a part of relay teams. She is already sixth on the all-time scoring list for Loyola. Seniors Tricia Merkert and Ellen O’Connor are the only team members lost to graduation, so women’s swimming at Loyola bears watching in the future. 122 Women’s Swimming if il Wrestling Team Roster Gregg Bell Mark Filipe Jim Garland Herb Geary Joe Graziano Joe Hamel Mike Harrison Rich Kotlowski Ken Porro Dan Szparaga John Tartal Head Coach — Michael Jordan Head Trainer — LeRoy Brandimore Student Trainer — Derrick Manka Manager — Sherry Gordon Record 3-15 Opponent W L Score American University L 0-57 Haverford L 22-30 George Washington L 0-54 Rutgers-Camden L 0-56 Johns Hopkins L 18-33 Western Maryland L 12-45 York College L 9-42 LaSalle W 39-12 Gettysburg L 6-47 Longwood L 3-42 Lynchburg L 8-32 Davidson L 12-28 Washington and Lee L 3-47 Hampden- Sydney W 25-09 Maryland-Eastern Shore W 16-12 Delaware State L 0-59 Liberty Baptist L 0-52 George Mason L 0-60 124 Wrestling hr An abundance of injuries and a lack of able bodies are the twin curses that seem to haunt Loyola’s Wrestling team every year. For the 1 982-83 season, the injury jinx again struck third-year coach Mike Jordan ' s squad, but the Grey- hounds still managed to squeeze out two more victories than they did the previous season. Jordan’s grapplers won all of their matches within a two week span and finished the season with a 3-16 record. The Greyhounds started the season with eleven wrestlers, but injuries or other problems had whittled the squad down to six by season ' s end. Even with the manpower shortage, the team was able to defeat LaSalle, Hampden- Sydney, and Maryland-Eastern Shore. Team MVP, John Tartal, the only senior on the squad, compiled a respectable record in the tough 1 18 pound class. Juniors Gregg Bell and Jim Garland, along with sophomore Mike Harri- son, joined Tartal as the mainstays of the squad. If the Greyhounds can avoid injuries and recruit enough people to fill the squad, perhaps the team will fare better next season. Division I competition, often facing teams it could not compete with in talent or physical size. But the Greyhounds proved throughout the season that they gave away nothing to any team in hustle, per- sistence, and heart. True, numbers can tell much about a team, and on paper, Loyola’s season record of 5-9 does not seem impressive. However, numbers usually fail to pick up the intangibles, and it is those qualities that don’t show up in the statistics that made this club better than what the record indicates. It doesn’t take much imagination to see that with a little luck at the end of several close games, the Greyhounds would be a 9-5 team. But, four losses came by a total of seven goals, and Loy- ola was never able to put together back- to-back victories. It was a season of frus- tration, but one that at the same time provided hope for the future. Loyola opened its season by losing to eventual national champion Syracuse 18-6. The team’s first victory came over Air Force in the first round of the Loyola Invitational, but the Greyhounds lost in the final to New Hampshire in a driving rain. Impressive wins over Bucknell and Georgetown, plus a thrilling overtime win at Penn State, were the high points of the season. But, Loyola was seemingly jinxed in the late going, suffering one- goal losses to William and Mary and Baltimore, in addition to dropping close games against area rivals U.M.B.C. and Towson State. The team ' s final game, a 24-13 loss to national power Virginia, was in many ways characteristic of the season, as Loyola went all out against a bigger, more talented team, only to make a small dent in the final stats. Senior Neal Barthelme, the team MVP, led the club in assists (31) and total points (52). Sophomore Trip McShane led all Greyhounds with 34 goals, and freshman Pat Lamon was sec- ond with 25 tallies. The team loses six seniors, including Neal Barthelme, Jeff Stern, Ben Hag- berg, Tom McNamara, Joe Valletta, and Moe Bozel, but 17 of the 19 return- ees are freshman and sophomores. This solid nucleus looks like a good bet to turn some of those close losses into victories. If anything, coach Anne McCloskey’s squad warmed to the challenge posting a 7- 4-2 mark and landing a berth in the N.C.A.A. championship tournament. Despite an early season dotted with postponements because of poor weather, the women kept stride as they remained undefeat- ed through the first eight games. Highlights included lopsided wins over Hofstra, U.M.B.C., and Towson State, a come-from- behind victory over James Madison, and a 12-11 squeaker over Richmond. Entering the tougher part of the schedule, the Grey- hounds were beaten by Delaware, upset by Lafayette, and edged by Maryland. In the N.C.A.A.’s the Greyhounds could not recover from poor shooting luck in the first half and were ousted 9-5 by Penn. Janet Eisenhut, team MVP, led Loyola in goals (47), assists (14), and points (61). Lisa Gardill, Diane Whiteley, and Missy Lightner were also bona fide offensive threats. In goal, Diane Geppi’s .749 percentage was impressive. Janet Eisenhut, Lisa Gardill, Diane Whiteley, Mary Kaye Gries, Georgia Nastos, and Meg Gunther will be lost to graduation, b ut the team, dominated by freshmen and sophomores, should pick up where it left off. For coach Rick McClure and his team, it was like playing two separate seasons. The first season was not a memorable one for the Greyhounds, who lost their first six matches. After vacation, however, it was a different Loyola team playing. The post-Easter Greyhounds went 6-3 and wound up with a final record of 6- 9. Playing home matches at Perring Raquet Club until courts are con- structed on campus, the team finally broke into the win column with a 7- 2 victory over Catholic University, the first win in a streak that saw the Greyhounds take four of five matches. Other victories came against St. Mary’s, U.D.C., York College, and U.M.B.C. twice. The only senior on the squad was number two singles player Bob Hauver, who was chosen as the team’s MVP. While Hauver will be missed, junior John Ghiardi and sophomore Peter Griffiths head a strong list of returnees that should help the team continue to improve. But, it has not affected the performance of coach Mike Ventur a’s squad, which com- pleted another fine season with a 6-3 record. The Greyhounds began the season with a 17-stroke victory over Georgetown, followed by a defeat by Towson State. Then, going on the road for one of only two away matches, Loyola defeated Catholic University to start a three match winning streak, which included wins over Western Maryland and Mount St. Mary’s. Under the direction of Assistant Athletic Director Anne McCloskey the program attracted a record number of participants, which was probably in- duced by better organization, sensible scheduling, and greater attention to playing by the rules. Several changes were made to accomodate students. One was the creation of a commuter league in sof tball, with games scheduled during the day for commuters ' con- venience. Another was the creation of a playoff system designed to avoid the necessity of endless tie-breaking playoff games, as in past years. Perhaps the biggest hit of all with the students was the scheduling of the intramural football championship game on a Wednesday night under the Astroturf lights, an event that attracted perhaps a record crowd! Softball was the most popular sport, and football, basketball (two seasons), soccer, and volleyball all enjoyed high participation rates. Al- though the beer was not green, lads and lasses were decked in kelly, and flocks frolicked to the tunes of the “Rye Whiskey Band.” Friends wished each other best of luck in fu- ture years and hoped for masterful memories in remembering the events of Loyola College night life. Student Life 201 A.S.L.C. Elections On March 9, the entire student body was invited out to the polls to participate in select- ing their representatives for the upcoming year. Supervised by commissioner Terri Hobbs, this year’s elections were competitive and exciting. The Evergreen staff congratu- lates all of the winners, especially: Tim Mur- phy — A.S.L.C. President for a second term, Dora Bankins — V.P. of Academic Affairs, Michael Avia — V.P. of Student Affairs, and Ted Miles — V. P. of Social Affairs. “This is the apathy lever. If you don’t feel like pulling the others you can use this one.” A.S.L.C. Zinger On May 2, the Associated Students of Loyola College held the annual “Zinger” to roast the past and present officers of the student government. Tim Madey and John Kurowski lead the party as the masters of ceremonies. Everyone enjoyed the good natured ribbing and festivities held in the Andrew White Club. A.S.L.C. Zinger 203 Maryland Day, the annual spring ceremony at Loyola that commemorates the 1634 founding of the Maryland Colony, was held on Friday, March 25th. Highlights of the celebration in- cluded the presentation of Andrew White Medals, Alumni Lau- reate Awards, Who’s Who certificates, and of course, the Teacher of the Year Award. Employee service awards were presented to 22 dedicated employees. The keynote address was delivered by the Most Reverend P. Francis Murphy, Western Vicar of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The Andrew White Medal is named after the first Jesuit priest to offer Mass with the settlers after landing in Maryland, the Reverend Andrew White, S.J. The recipients of this coveted award were chosen on the basis of outstanding service to their community. Henry S. Clark, R.P. Harriss, Carolyn Manuczak, and the Most Reverend P. Francis Murphy were honored during this 23rd Maryland Day celebration. The Alumni Laureate Awards, given in appreciation to those displaying superior devotion to the best interests of their profes- sion and community, were received by Charles H. Dorsey, Jr. and James St. L. O ' Toole. The first award was presented in 1972. The 1983 Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award was pre- sented to Dr. Carol N. Abromaitis of the Department of English, Fine Arts and Writing. Maryland Day 205 President’s Ball On March 25, Loyola held its annual Presi- dent’s Inaugural Ball, co-sponsored by the A.S.L.C. and R.O.T.C., in the Grand Ball- room of Martin’s West. The agenda for the evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, open bar, and dancing throughout the evening. The big band music provided by the “Walter Salb Orch estra” set the mood for the evening and gave students a taste of the good old days of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Good- man. President’s Ball 207 Beach Party Mike “Hawaiian” Hollis escorts a pair of beach bunnies to paradise. Winner of the 1983 Sexiest Beach Bum on Campus Award, Doug Hamilton Although students were back in classes to finish up the 1982-83 year, on April 15, it was spring break all over again at Loyola. The Commuter Stu- dents Association threw their annual Beach Party Bash, and everyone arrived in their “beachiest” clothes. Contests were held to find Loyola’s “beachiest” guy and gal, and everyone rocked to the sounds of the Top-40 band, “Deutz.” The only things missing were the sand and surf. 208 Beach Party Sadie Hawkins April 30 marked the date of the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance sponsored by the senior class. On this night, Loyola girls dared to take that special guy out for a night of fun, and they even picked up the tab! The evening included drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing to the sounds of “Fast Break.” Sadie Hawkins 209 Junior Prom On May 1 3, the Class of ’84 held their Junior Prom in the Grand Ballroom of Martin’s West. Under the leadership of class president, Doug Wolf, Loyola ju- niors came together to celebrate three memorable years at Loyola. 210 Junior Prom Junior Prom 21 1 Junior Prom 213 gfej Preakness On May 2 1 , Loyola students were off and partying in the rain at Pimlico. The rain turned Camp Loyola into a mud bath, but it failed to dampen the party spirit. Some students even found time to watch Deputed Tes- timony, ridden by Baltimore’s own Donny Miller, pull out an exciting victory in the Preakness. Hopefully, next year’s Preakness will maintain the same good spir- it under somewhat drier circumstances. 214 Preakness Preakness 21 5 Friends depart, and memory takes them To her caverns, pure and deep. This was the first event to kick off the celebration of the seniors’ last year at Loyola. Blessed with beautiful weather, seniors and their guests enjoyed a day of fun in the sun, while feasting on a variety of de- lectables including crabs, salads, cold cuts, bar-b-que, corn on the cob, and of course, plenty of soda and beer. The latest in cigarette holders. 268 Senior Crab Feast sir Senior Crab Feast 269 Senior 100 Nites One of the nights comedy acts starred the girls of McAuley as the guys of McAuley. 270 Senior 100 Nites Friday, February 19, kicked off the beginning of the end of the seniors’ four years at Loyola. On this evening, seniors attended the traditional Senior 100 Nites to cele- brate their 100 days before graduation. Students enjoyed an evening of revealing and often embarrassing one-liners and skits, while munching on cold cuts and salads, and drinking plenty of wine, soda, and beer. Seniors dredged up the “dirt” on their fellow classmates and anxiously awaited for the emcees to read their contributions. Senior 100 Nites 271 Senior Week As the 1983 spring semester was drawing to a close, seniors were just beginning to celebrate four unforgettable years at Loyola. The agenda for Senior Week included a cocktail recep- tion hosted by the Jesuit Com- munity on May 22, a cocktail reception hosted by the Alumni Association on May 24, a trip to Memorial Statium to see the Orioles on May 25, the Senior Prom on May 26, and finally, Senior Shooters Night at Charles Village Pub on May 27. It was truly a week that will al- ways be remembered. Senior Week 273 274 Senior Week Senior Week 275 Senior Prom May 26 marked the date of one of the most excit- ing of all senior events, the Senior Prom. This year’s extravaganza was held at the elegant Belvedere Ho- tel. While hors d’oeuvres and drinks were served throughout the evening, seniors and their guests danced to the Top 40 sounds of the “Majesties.” Although they were excited about their upcoming graduation, seniors knew that their days at Loyola were coming to an end and made this one of their best times yet! 276 Senior Prom 278 Senior Prom Baccalaureate Mass 280 Baccalaureate Mass On May 28, the Baccalaureate Mass was held at the Cathe- dral of Mary Our Queen in honor of the graduating seniors. Father Sellinger was the principal celebrant, and Mr. Kevin Wildes delivered the homily. On this evening seniors, their fam- ilies, and the faculty and administration gathered together to give thanks for four years at Loyola, and to ask for God’s guidance as they go their separate ways to begin their new lives. Baccalaureate Mass 281 Commencement Sunday, May 29, marked the date of the 1 34th annual Com- mencement Exercises which were held at the Baltimore Civic Center. The day began with a luncheon hosted by Father Sel- linger, followed by the R.O.T.C. Commissioning, and at 3:30, the graduation ceremony began. Although inclement weather prevented on-campus graduation exercises, it was unable to dampen the spirits of all who attended. While this day signified a new beginning for the Class of 1 983, it also it also signified the end of four precious years spent at Loyola College. The exper- iences of the Class of ' 83 would soon become happy memories, never to be forgotten. Seventy-four year old Mary Tremmel received a standing ovation along with her diploma. Facts indicate that you may work in three to five different careers. It won’t be unusual to make changes as you go. And it’s entirely possible that your final career does not even exist today. Often in a first job, you are an assistant to the assistant. Your responsibility is limited to a desk and typewriter. But when your first job is an Army 2LT, you’ll have real management experience. You’ll be in charge. On a specific job assignment, you could have 30 to 40 people working for you. And you could be responsible for millions of dollars in equipment. Responsibility for people and resources is exactly the kind of take charge” experience civilian employers seek. It’s a margin of difference in the increasingly competitive job market. Prepare to rise to the top in your field. Make your first job 3 or 4 years as an Army Officer. If you have two years remaining in school, you can begin ROTC this summer. You’ll be compensated financially; stimulated physically and mentally. To add experience to your degree contact The Army ROTC Enrollment Officer at Loyola College, 323-1010, Ext 276. Army ROTC. Celia Cortada and Lorraine Verderaime rn ' im mi. Greg Rodowsky Yearbook Staff 319 The task that any yearbook staff sets out to accomplish at the beginning of a school year is a difficult one. Putting together a yearbook is never easy, and is always a challenge. The 1983 Evergreen staff met their challenge with a positive attitude, and their hard work and dedication has been rewarded by the publi- cation of this book. On behalf of the Loyola College community and especially the Class of 1983 I would like to thank all the individuals who dedicated their time and effort to the preparation of this book. There are of course always individuals whose work is out- standing. Adam Block is one of those individuals. He did a marvelous job coordinating all the yearbook’s photographic ac- tivities, and he also sacrificed even more of his free time to help out in other areas of the book’s preparation. Adam ' s sense of responsibility and his dedication are especially noteworthy. I am proud to have been associated with him. My assistant, Chris Murphy, spent many hours performing various and numerous tasks that were necessary so that this yearbook could be as well put together as it is. He has my sincere thanks for a job well done. Jonette Bartlinski, this year’s Senior Section Editor, had the almost endless task of designing and assembling the book’s Senior Section. With help from Michelle Blanche, Anne Da- miano, and Michele Pethel, she did a beautiful job putting the Senior Section together. Tina Dickinson ' s work on the Sports Section is also praise- worthy. Her page layouts were characterized by consistent quality and originality. Linda Hallmen did a fine job putting together the Student Life Section. Christina Pappas consistent- ly provided me with a well written and well researched copy. Dave Smith wrote all of the sports wrap-ups that appear in this book. His expertise in that area is particularly noteworthy. Talia Cortada, with assistance from Celia Cortada and Lorraine Ver- deraime, processed and contacted almost every roll of film that was taken for this yearbook. Ray Pasko performed his duties as Business Manager in a responsible manner. He deserves a lot of credit for the money that he raised. The Faculty a nd Adminis- tration Section was well planned and put together by Carla O’Brien. Karen Bertness was responsible for the Clubs and Organizations Section of the book, and she did a fine job with it. My thanks to Cindy Habart for helping me to stay organized throughout the year, and for helping me helping me with my administrative paperwork. I would like to thank Amy Butcher for the sketches that she did of Mr. Wildes and Mr. Scheye, and J.R. Conlin for the cartoons that he drew for the Clubs and Organizations Section. I would also like to thank Carolyn Kasprzak for once again writing a beautiful poem for the intro- duction. Jeannie Lohnes and Greg Rodowsky are two staff members that I would also like to thank. Jeannie ' s candid and group photos are a fine example of her photographic creativity. Greg’s work behind the camera was particularly reliable and of consistent quality. An yone who works on a yearbook must be of a special charac- ter. Yearbooks, of course, only come out once a year, and the student body for the most part is unaware of the work that the staff is doing. Unlike an athlete, a yearbook staffer does not receive cheers of support throughout the year. He or she must continue to work simply because of the value of what is being accomplished. Except for the satisfaction of having published a book, there is no immediate reward for those who work so diligently on such a project. However, there need not be an immediate reward, such as praise from one’s peers, or acknowl- edgement from the faculty or administration, because the value of a yearbook is intrinsic. The meaning that a yearbook has to those that remember by it in the present or the future is motiva- tion enough for those of us who dedicate our time and talents to such an effort. One faculty member who not only recognized the efforts of the yearbook staff, but chose to accept the position of Faculty Advisor was Mr. Kevin Wildes, S.J. I would like to express my thanks to Kevin for all of his support throughout the past two years. His active participation proved to be truly valuable. The publication of this yearbook is especially significant for me because it ends a professional relationship that 1 have had for seven years with Mr. Coy W. Harris of the Herff Jones Yearbook Publishing Company. Throughout the past seven years Coy and I have worked well together and have established a solid friendship. I would like to express my sincere and heart- felt appreciation to my friends Coy and Sheila Harris for their friendship, support, and hospitality. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to my close friend Christopher Shocklee for all of his advice, support, and friendship throughout the years that I have known him. And finally, 1 would like to express my deepest gratitude to my mother and father for all of their love, support, and encour- agement. I hope that this yearbook serves its purpose well, and that it brings many enjoyable hours to those who peruse its pages. To my fellow classmates, I wish you prosperity and success in your endeavors, and may you find peace in whatever you do. Rockville, Maryland May, 1983 320 Editor’s Letter 9
