Text from Pages 1 - 280 of the 1982 volume:

I 1 j i j i- 1 Evergreen Annual for the Academic Year 1981-1982 Loyola College 4501 North Charles Street Baltimore, Maryland 21210 MCMLXXXII I remember when you were a stranger, vulnerable, and courageously alone. Slowly and reverently, I made my way into your life; Stumbling through the dark corridors of your mind, and opening the windows of my heart to your soul. Years from now, if a day seems interminably dreary, I will take this book down from a dusty shelf, and look specifically for your picture. It will bring a smile to my lips, and stir joy in my heart. For I will remember that very first day, and the awkward, rewarding, painful, and loving way — That we became friends. After more than 50 years of Jesuit service, Fr. Nicholas Kunkel, S.J. continues to be a vital member of the Loyola Community. Prior to his arrival at Loyola, Fr. Kunkel served as Dean of Men at Georgetown University and held various positions at Atenes de Manila University in the Philipines. Since coming to Loyola in 1970 as Associate Dean, Father has devoted much of his time and energy to listen- ing to and aiding students in various areas of concern. Many students have discovered that when they don’t know where to turn with a problem, Fr. Kunkel can always be counted on to do his best to resolve it. We at Loyola are indeed lucky to have a man so dedicated to the concerns of the students. This caring man is a prominent asset for faculty and students alike. For all that you have done and all that you will do, Fr. Kunkel, we thank you. Dedication ? Faculty Administration 35 A Profile of ’82 By Carol Nevin Abromaitis, Ph.D. Associate Professor of English There is a certain chutzpah in composing a portrait of a class of more than five-hundred-fifty young men and women who are majoring in disciplines as different as Chemistry, Theology, Accounting, and Speech Pathology; who have lived in almost every state in the union and in several foreign countries; who work as hospital orderlies, news stringers, credit managers, waitresses, and book salesmen; who plan to be state officials, parents, execu- tives, priests, military officers, and teachers. But in all of this diversity, from all of this variety, emerge lines which form the contours of the face of the Class of 1 982. This face is not so young as it was four years ago, but it is still young. It bears the signs of the triumphs and defeats which mark all lives but somehow seem to be even more intensely experienced within the crucible of college. The youth of the face testifies to the combination of hope and impatience which have typified the class. Equally notable is the energy which radiates from this face. This energy brings classes alive, keeps organizations meeting, fills publications, plays sports in all seasons, and dances the nights away. Someday you will recall with disbelief the stamina which enabled you to crowd into twenty-four hours a paper for English, a report for Theol- ogy, a test in Biology, and a meeting of the Rugby Club to plan fund-raising ploys even as you listened to your room- mate explain why a date was a total disaster as the two of you had a ten-minute lunch. Another shaping line of this face is the compassion which you have collectively displayed. Many of you have been blood donors, dancers for the handicapped, fasters for the hungry, and footballers for the poor. But this kind- ness has not been limited to organized events and causes. You have displayed your concern for each other in your joy at another’s success, your comfort in another’s sor- rows. Your profile has become even more sharply limned by the growth in seriousness which you have manifested in your studies and in your role in the governance of Loyola. As you moved from underclassmen to upperclassmen, most of you began to realize that this business of classes was not mere busy work. You became aware that studies were not chores to be avoided but your reason for being at Loyola. Moreover, in the various committees you joined, you more than pulled your own weight. Whether partici- pating in curricular revision or devising teacher — evalua- tion forms, this class worked diligently and thoughtfully to improve the academic life. All of this is not to say that the faculty is complacent about you. We would have you more in love with studying for the sake of studying, more informed about areas which lie outside of your major, more willing to be challenged aesthetically. But we know that these wishes are an ex- pression of that fundamental desire which teachers always have for their students: that somehow you should be more, be better than we are. Only time will tell whether you will indeed be more, be better. This face which your class now has is that which God, your parents, and your education have given you. In fifty years there will be no face which can be imposed on you, even metaphorically. Then what you have done with your gifts, your time, your opportunities will shape the faces which you wear. May those faces reflect lives of integrity which have made this fallen world better for your having been in it. 36 Faculty Administration Faculty Administration 37 History, Political Science, and Classics History, Political Science John R. O’Neill No one, they say. is indispensable. But some persons, if not irreplaceable, are unforgettable. One such person who will be gratefully remembered by many is Robert L. O ' Neill, our late Financial Aid Officer and Assistant Pro- fessor of Accounting. His former students and clients and faculty colleagues deeply feel his loss. When death walks in and takes someone so special, his friends are shocked and dismayed. But much as we miss him. we know he is still with us by his interest and prayers. Robert O’Neill ' s was a full life that fell like a ripe autumn leaf. He was a man of faith. In his family, in his parish commitments, in the business world, in his distin- guished military service, in his youth work, in his social life, and in his achievements and friendships here in the Loyola College he loved, he gave himself with total gener- ousity. He simply was a giver. How apt it was that this man, who might have accumulated fortunes in the mar- ketplace, gave himself to the education of youth and spent his golden years giving away money to students in their need. He lives in our memory as a man of open hand and heart. Mr. O ' Neill w ' as aged 67, a veteran of World War II and of the Korean War, a veteran too of the business world, in sales and credit and accounting, and as a partner in Canofor, Inc., and in Century Press. He graduated from Calvert Hall and the University of Baltimore, and earned his Master ' s Degree in Business Administration at Loy- ola. In 1 967 he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and came to work here. Among his many community servcies w-as editorial and television work for the Knights of Columbus, and leadership in the Catholic Youth Organization and in various sports programs. All of us are in some way made poorer by the death of Bob O ' Neill. But we have been much enriched by his life. We at Loyola express our gratitude as well as our condo- lences to his devoted wife and daughters and son and grandchildren. With affection kindled in his own family Bob brighten the lives of students and colleagues and friends. He alw ' ays had a cheerful kindly word. His thoughts were of others, of how he could help. May his example and his prayers inspire us all to be generous and thoughtful and kind as he was. The Men’s Rugby Club lived up to its reputa- tion as Loyola’s most active club and also became the largest Loyola rugby club ever with over 60 members. The fall season saw the ruggers defeat rival Towson State 6-0, at home, while also chalking up victories over Salisbury State, and Catholic University. The team’s losses came at the hands of George Mason, 13-9; and Frostburg, 4-0. The Frostburg loss was especially tough since it came in the first round of the Potomac Rugby Union Tournament. The fall season was a good effort by all the team members. It allowed the new less exper- ienced players time to integrate themselves into the club, while the veterans played with their usual excellence. Three team members: John Molli, Tom Sheri- dan, and Kenny Ames made the Baltimore Area Select Side and the Potomac Rugby Union Colle- giate Select Side. The 1982 spring season was the second most success- ful season in the history of rugby at Loyola. The club finished the season with an overall record of 8-3-2. Victories were recorded against Towson State, Mount St. Mary’s, Boston College, West Potomac, Western Suburbs, Chesapeake, Severn River, and an unprec- edented 3-0 win over the Division I Baltimore Rugby Club. Loyola also tied the Division II Baltimore Coun- ty Club 8-8; a team stacked with Loyola alumni. The highlight of the season was the first-ever Loyola College Jesuit Invitational Rugby Tournament. Loyola played host (on and off the field) to Holy Cross, Boston College, and Georgetown rugby clubs. The tourney featured Loyola beating Boston College 22-7 in the preliminary round before being upset in the finals by Holy Cross. Loyola’s last venture of the season was in the presti- gious Preakness Tournament. The club chalked up three wins and took second place out of ten teams; suffering a heartbreaking loss to a rejuvenated Towson State in the championship match. The Loyola Ruggers also bid farewell and good luck to these graduating senior rugby players: George An- drews, Alec Buchness, Neil Buchness, Mike Bucking- ham, Billy Burke, Huck Finn, and Tim Wickiser. Women’s Rugby Tournament. Excellent teams from throughout the area came together in Washington to kick off the season. Frostburg, Chesapeake, Towson State, the Washington, D.C. Women’s Club, and the University of Maryland all competed for the trophy. Loyola’s women played hard in each game but were overmatched by the larger more ex- perienced squads, and finished in last place. The team was able to manage victories over Catholic University, and Franklin and Marshall, though they fell victim to other quality opponents. The lady ruggers look forward to the spring when they will be able to field a more experienced team. There is reason for optimism if the team can avoid the great num- ber of injuries which plagued them this fall. Newly ac- quired full time coach Merri Schuman should be able to lead her enthusiastic women to new heights in the spring if the team can return with the same dedication it showed this fall. 80 Clubs Organizations Clubs Organizations 81 Women’s Spring Rugby Front Row: Cathie Dannemiller, Amy Soisson, Peggy Fonshell, Lorraine Verderaime, Celia Cortada, Beth Phaup. The Women’s Rugby Team ventured into another competi- tive season with an increased number of recruits. The season started with an encouraging twenty-eight girls, and the team maintained twenty-two of them which led the squad to a proud 3-4 record. The club’s challenges included familiar teams as well as new ones. Among them were Catholic U., Washington R.F.C., Mount St. Mary’s, N.J. Cheerie O’s, Smith College, Franklin and Marshall, and Towson State. Unlike previous sea- sons, this spring the team worked on creating plays and estab- lishing positions. The main concern remained however, to es- cape injury. While accepting new strategies of the game, the club also accepted players from various area colleges. These members came from Notre Dame, Towson State, and Maryland Institute. Loyola’s season was highlighted by two other tournament victories. The Greyhounds began their campaign by winning the Baltimore Metro Tour- nament with a 2-1 overtime conquest of Towson State University. Coach Bill Sento’s club also captured the ti- tle of its own tourney, the Loyola In- vitational, for the first time in four years by beating Evansville 1-0. Goalkeeper Bryan McPhee turned in a superb season in the nets, with six shutouts in only twelve games. McPhee sat out six games in October with a back injury, at this time the Hounds hit a mid-season slump. With the sophomore keeper minding the nets, the Hounds’ record was an im- pressive 8-2-1. Freshmen played a huge part in the hooters’ successful season. The Grey- hounds’ top four scorers were all first- year men. Forward Tom Rafferty was Loyola’s leading scorer with 9 goals and 3 assists. Clark Callinan, Vince Griffith, and Greg Zsebedics were other frosh who provided much needed scoring punch. Midfielder Darrell Helm and fullback Marvin Branch were two other freshmen who made important contributions. It was largely because of the efforts of these freshmen in particular and the entire team in general that the Greyhounds were able to double their offensive production of a year ago. Leadership for the younger players was provided by the co-captains, ju- nior Tom Vitrano and sophomore Craig Callinan. Coach Sento will be hard pressed to have as good a recruiting year as the one just passed, but it may not be nec- essary. For Loyola’s men’s basketball however, the 1 1 victories in its initial season of competition with the big boys in the NCAA’s Division I was cause for celebration. The Greyhounds were a surprise contender in the newly- formed ECAC Metro-South confer- ence, and only some tough losses (nine defeats were by five points or less) kept the squad from having a winning record. Loyola began its new era in Divi- sion I with a lot of new faces. Rookie head coach Bill Burke got the most out of his young squad, which dis- played the patience and poise usually reserved for senior-laden teams. Burke’s excellent coaching job earned him the honor of being named Col- lege Coach of the Year in Maryland by one Baltimore paper, the News American. Burke started three freshmen for much of the year, and each made im- portant contributions throughout the season. One of them, guard Maurice Hicks, quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic players to wear a Loyola uniform. Only 5’9”, Hicks’ quick penetration, slick ball handling and deadly foul shooting made him a crowd favorite. Another freshman, forward Bob Selby, played a strong inside game and was the team’s leading scorer early in the year. If Hicks and Selby were the bright- est new faces, senior guard Tom “Ice” Caraher was the dependable veteran. Caraher was the foundation of the offense and led the team’s scor- ing while providing the consistent performance that often carried the club. Caraher also became the 17th player to crack Loyola’s 1000-point club during a home game against Siena. Hicks, Selby and Caraher were all honored as all-state selections by Bal- timore’s major newspapers. While these three were the most visible per- formers for the Greyhounds, seniors Mark Valderas and John McGinnis also made their presence known. Val- deras’s physical play and strong de- fense along with McGinnis’ steady play made them key performers. Highlights of the season included wins over arch-rival Mt. St. Mary’s, highly regarded Long Island Univer- sity, and backyard rivals Baltimore U. an d Towson State. The Grey- hounds also pulled out close victories over Marist, St. Francis (PA) and Hofstra. Seniors Caraher, Valderas, and McGinnis will certainly be missed, but with Hicks, Selby, Coach Burke, and the rest of the team back, Loyola basketball promises to be exciting for the next few years. 102 Sports Seated: Mary Jo McVey, DeDe Sneeringer, Gaby Nagle, Tina Prangley, Adrienne Moore. This year, the Greyhounds found the going a little tougher in their first year of Division 1. Still, a 6-7 record against a sched- ule that included traditional lacrosse power Virginia, and strong teams such as Baltimore and Washington College, was a fine effort. That record could have easily been 8-5 if a couple of heartbreaking one-goal losses had gone Loyola’s way. The season started off on a good note as the Greyhounds whipped Pennsylvania 14-8. Tony Golden’s five goals led the way as the midfield and defense turned in a solid game. Next came the Loyola Invitational, and the ’Hounds looked like world- beaters in their 27-10 opening-round drubbing of Notre Dame. But in the championship game, Loyola ran into a powerful Princeton squad which handed the club its first loss of the year. The next eight games, of which Loyola won half, included some high points and a couple of tough losses. The ’Hounds got by Bucknell in over- time and administered a 24-1 beating to Georgetown. William and Mary was the victim of a 30-11 pasting by the Green and Grey. Loyola lost a couple of tough ones, however. Two late goals by U.M.B.C. spoiled a good performance by Loyola’s freshman goalie Matt Darby, for a 9-8 Loyola loss. Two games later, Loyola lost a four goal lead and eventually bowed to Penn State in overtime. For the season, Loyola’s scoring leader was attackman Ben Hagberg with 31 goals and 19 assists. Mid- fielder Neal Barthelme registered 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists, and attackman Tony Golden was second on the team in goals with 24. Buzz Miller was the runner-up to Hagberg in assists, dishing out 18. Scott Hahn was the glue that held the Greyhound midfield together. Hahn scooped up 70 ground balls, tops on the team, and was voted the club’s most valuable player. For Coach Jay Connor, it was his final season at the helm, as he elected to leave the coaching profession for the business world. Connor guided the Greyhounds to some of their fin- est seasons, and his contributions to Loyola athletics will be remembered. For the following two days the agendas of the freshmen included outdoor picincs, small group sessions, and bus trips to Har- bor Place and Orioles game. Hounds were made to do many and various degrading activities. Male Hounds were seen dressed in reveal- ing dresses and nightgowns and girls were led about on leashes and dressed in less than flattering attire. That evening Hounds performed skits, under the direction of their masters, for the entertainment of all. The prize-winning act was a clever rendition of the famous song “Short People” by a group of Hounds made up to look like dwarfs. When it was all over, even the freshmen had to admit that the whole affair was a lot of fun. But, they were quick to add that they couldn’t wait until next year when they will be the top dogs. 130 Student Life Student Life 131 Art Festival The Outdoor Invitational Art Exibition has be- come a tradition here at Loyola. Out of those who were experiencing reggae for the first time, the majority seemed very pleased by what they heard. A few dozen students, wearing strawhats, sunglasses, and flow- ered tropical shirts, braved the nip- py temperature outside long enough to make their way to the cafeteria. Zorzi Political Science Seniors 223 r Senior Crab Feast On Sunday, September 20, the Class of 1982 held their first event of the year — the Senior Crab Feast. From 2-6 p.m. in the park- ing lot behind Butler Hall seniors gathered to enjoy the brisk autumn afternoon, and to celebrate the fact that “we are finally seniors!” Vol- leyball, a special strip tease num- ber, crabs, soup, and beer were in- cluded in the day’s agenda and made for a good time. Crabs and beer disappeared at an alarming rate! Seniors 225 Senior lOO’s Night The Loyola College grapevine was alive and buzzing Friday, February 19, at Senior lOO’s Night. From 9-2 in the cafeteria, music, beer, cold cuts and munchies were plentiful. Seniors roasted each other in the annual “skeleton hunt” dedicated to celebrating 100 nights until graduation. Jim Franklin, Chris Buck, Laura Degnan, and Bob Cawley fired the one-liners in between the show’s special attractions of the Dating Game, the “Most Likely To” awards, and a slinky strip tease number. It was definitely a great night to remember. Seniors 227 228 Seniors Senior Week Seniors 229 230 Seniors As their final semester at Loyola drew to a close, the seniors kept busy during Senior Week. The events on their busy agendas included a cocktail reception hosted by the Jesuit Community on May 23, a cocktail recep- tion hosted by the Alumni Association on May 25, a bull roast with open-pit beef on May 26, and a Hawai- ian Punch Shooters Night in the Rat on May 27. Who could think of a better way to honor the graduating seniors?! Seniors 231 Senior Prom t May 28, marked the date of one of Loyola’s most anticipated events, the Senior Prom, which was held at one of Baltimore’s most elegant hotels, the Hy- att Regency. After cocktails and dinner were served, students put on their danc- ing shoes and danced to the music of “Lee Shane and Spring Fever.” Seniors, excited about graduating, but sad to leave their friends, spent much of the evening reliving “the best of times” at Loyola. It was truly a night that would live on in the hearts of seniors forever! 232 Seniors Seniors 233 Baccalaureate Mass The Baccalaureate Mass, in honor of the graduating seniors, was held on May 29, at the Cathe- dral of Mary Our Queen. Father Lou Bonacci delivered the homily. The students, their families, and the faculty and administration, gathered together in celebration and prayer with hopes that the sen- iors’ tomorrows would be filled with love, happiness, and success. 234 Seniors Seniors 235 Commencement 236 Seniors Seniors 237 Sunday May 30, marked the date of Loyola’s 133rd annual commencement ceremonies. The day began with a buffet reception hosted by Fr. Sellinger, fol- lowed by the R.O.T.C. commissioning; and finally at 3:00, the graduation cere- monies began. Speakers for the day in- cluded Senior Class President Vanessa Pappas, Father Joseph Sellinger, and Honorary Degree Recipients. Though it was a day to celebrate a new beginning it also signified the end of the reign of the class of ’82. Knowing that this was the last time many seniors would see each other, they held on to these precious mo- ments that would soon become fond memories. 238 Seniors i i Seniors 239 Senior Directory Stacy Adams 1 142 Oakland Rd. Melanie Christina Yearbook Staff 271 The 1981-1982 school year saw the continuation and the initiation of steady growth that has been characteristic of Loyola College for many years. The 1 982 Evergreen is a fine example of Loyola’s tremendous growth. This year- book has more pages, more features, more color, and of course more pictures than any previous edition. My per- sonal goal, and the goal of each and every member of the 1982 Evergreen staff was to publish the finest yearbook in Loyola history. This goal has unquestionably been met. Although the beginning of the year saw the staff as just a handful of hardworking individuals, with a monumental task before them, they quickly coalesced, directing their skills and talents toward the creation of an excellent vol- ume. I was especially pleased with the growth of the ’82 staff. This year’s staff was the largest ever, and in my opinion, the most talented. Without this talented and dedicated group of people the 1982 Evergreen would not have been possible. I would like to express my deeply felt gratitude to these individuals for all the time and effort that they spent on this book. Adam Block, who as a freshman, was the youn- gest member of the Editorial Board, carried out his duties as Photography Co-editor in a very reliable fashion. As the other Photography Editor, Talia Cortada performed in both a responsible and conscientious manner, which was reflected in her positive attitude. Chris Murphy’s comple- tion of many and diverse assignments kept the staff run- ning in a smooth and uninterupted fashion that was vital to the preparation of this book. Amy Sangster’s many hours of hard work paid off as the best senior section ever to grace the pages of a Loyola yearbook. Karen Bertness kept our small office space both clean and well organized, her completion of various assignments and a lot of typing was a tremendous help. Carla O’Brien raised a record amount of money, and spent many appreciated hours at the typewriter. Linda Hallmen and her layout staff com- pleted many more layouts than had even been done in the past, and on several occasions completed a lot of work on short notice. Dave Smith wrote all the sports articles, and made suggestions that enhanced the sports section. Celia Cortada and Lorraine Verderaime took countless pictures for the book, and their smiling faces often brightened the office. John Bove and John Lazzati played a vital role on the staff because they often took the distant or inconve- nient assignments that needed to be covered. Tina Pappas, the newest editor on the staff did an excellent job coordi- nating the book’s copy. I would like to thank Coy and Sheila Harris for every- thing that they did thoughout the school year. Also, I would like to thank Kevin Wildes for his guidance and advice. A special note of appreciation to my close friend Cindy Hoffman for all her treasured support throughout the year, and to my close friend and associate Chris Shocklee whose advice and support proved to be truly invaluable. Working on this book was certainly a pleasure for me. I sincerely hope that it brings many pleasurable hours to those that explore its pages. To the Class of 1 982, 1 wish you good luck, good health, happiness throughout life, and success in all that you do. Terry Mark Zic Editor-in-Chief 272 Editor ' s Letter 9 ( i I, f f ! I ' i I '
