Mfi y g OCT 5 887 liYOtA- NOTRE OAJft lian.ssv EVERGREEN 1981 Evergreen Annual, for the Academic Year 1980-1981 Loyola College, 4501 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21210 MCMLXXXI Father Sellinger and Mr. Jordan — Maryland Day 1981. 4 Dedication Dedication to Charles F. Jordan Charles F. Jordan is an extraordinary man of great personal forti- tude shaped by gentleness and sensitivity. As a faculty member at Loyola since 1947, he had devoted his teaching career to broadening the horizons of hundreds of students by directing their study of Spanish language and literature. As an associate professor of Spanish, he has been true to his role as an educator in the Jesuit Mercy tradition. His love of learning and concern for others are his trade- mark. During World War II, Mr. Jordan was a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, a surprising job for such a quiet-tempered man! Yet this fact serves to illustrate his sense of duty and ability to face any challenge that confronts him. Mr. Jordan has devoted his teaching career to Loyola College and its students, and as he retires it is only appropriate to recognize his career as it has truly exemplified the teachings of St. Ignatius. Though he retires from the faculty of the college, Charles F. Jordan does not really leave any of us. He is a part of our lives and a part of Loyola College that will remain with us always. The Class of 1981 Dedication 5 It was a September like any other September only this year we were Seniors. We had changed almost as much as Loyola had since that first day we set foot on Evergreen in the all of 1977, Suddenly it was four years later, Loyola had become our home. Friends, good times had gone into making these years some of the most enjoyable of our lives. Loyola was not the same place we found it nor were we the same people. We had both grown. The Evergreen Campus has undergone major expansion and renovation in the past four years. The small Jesuit College of our day is rapidly taking on a major university look. The new student center gymnasium will make Evergreen almost unrecognizable to the Class of 1981 but it will always be a place to come home to. The Class of 1981 has changed and matured. Who knows if anyone will recognize us in a few years? We are not the same people we were in 1977. The Class ol 1981 became a family somewhere in those four years of tests, papers, deadlines, dates, parties and interviews. Then it was Graduation Day, the moment we had all been waiting for. It came too fast and was over too soon. Our family then struck out in many different directions. This book is intended to be a reminder of those four years. It is a collection of all the best parts of our life at Loyola. Even though time and distance may separate u$ this book will stir memories to bring us all back together again to those carefree days at Loyola in 1981. +5 Zb 528 +550 Administration Joseph A. With four starting freshmen and as many as five or six in the game at one time, Loyola started off 1980 with a 2-1 overtime win against Towson State in the Metro Tournament, then went over a month before getting back into the winning column with a 2-0 blanking of Georgetown and a 1-0 shutout of Delaware. The Green and Grey finished up in Philadelphia with a 1-0 win over St. Jo- seph ' s. All-American candidate Kevin Bailey continued his domination at both ends of the pitch, virtually owning every headball near him and shutting down opponents with his speed to the ball and strength in the middle. In the second match with Towson State, Bails ' racked up an amazing 23 headballs while consistently thwarting Tige-r offensive threats. Dennis Trent came on strong late in the season, figuring in the Greyhounds ' last three goals, with Reid Sipes, a transfer from Essex CC, and senior Rick Wohlfort turn- ing in outstanding efforts as well. Freshmen fullbacks Craig Callinan, Chris Gaeng, and Tony Butta showed remarkable poise for first-year players at the college level; Callinan was Loyola ' s leading soccer and Butta and Gaeng combined with Bailey and Sipes to give Loyola a defense that al- lowed less than two goals per game. Keeper Bryan McPhee showed his worth time after time in the nets with some fine games, while Scott Lancaster pushed McPhee for a starting spot and stepped in to record the 1-0 shutout over St. Joseph ' s in the season fi- nale. Former coach Jim Bullington produced 15 winning seasons before he retired, but his first year at Loyola was just 2-8. And with the promise shown by both coach Sento and his squad, everything points to another era of winning soccer at Loyola. Kneeling: Colleen Cross, Laurie Stascavage and Diane Geppi. Women’s Wrap-Up Women ' s volleyball at Loyola has turned the corner, and although they didn’t take the MAIAW Tourna- ment title, they did put together an 18-9 mark, one of the finest ever in the sport at Evergreen. At one point, Cec Morrison and her team forged a nine-game winning streak and went 16 of 17 matches without seeing the loss column. Instrumental in that stretch run to the MAIAW Tournament were the fresh- man-senior combination of Diane Geppi and Mary Polvinale. Geppi’s higging and Polvinale’s defense pulled the Greyhounds out to a number of wins, and sparked the entire team with their play. Sophomores Laurie Stascavage and Judy Ogaitis did superb jobs setting up Geppi, Polvinale, Patty Schwartz, and Laura Lentz, while Liz Zolga and Karen Besok supplied a solid bench and fine spot perfor- manced for coach Morrison. Janet Eisenhut and Maureen O ' Neill shared the top scoring honors with Lynn Maskell, Holly Nyland, and Mary McDonald coming through with fine efforts during the season. Wrap-Up The Greyhound harriers had as few as only 4 or 5 runners at various times throughout the season, but still managed to forge a 4 — 7 mark for 1980. Sophomore Dennis Sullivan consistently finished first among Loyola runners, while classmate Jose Alboronoz and senior Mark Rosasco shared the no. 2 and 3 spots for coach Phil Jackman. Tim Turner, Jim Enright, and Greg Bacinski came through with consistently strong efforts, while Cindy Gaver, the lone woman on the squad, shows Loyola has the potential to develop a good women ' s X-C program with just a few more runners. The season ended on a good note, as the team of Alboronoz, Sullivan, Turner, Jack Guilfoyle, Ba- cinski, and coach Jackman won the 62.4 mile Monu- mental Relay from Downtown Baltimore to the Pa. state line and back in a time of 6:55.41. 66 Sports Wrestling Standing: Bob Redmond, Mike Morley, Marcus Clavio, Jim Garland, Coach Jordan Kneeling: Joe McGuire, Joe Awkward, Bob Schutz, and Tim Caulfield. Men’s Wrap — Up Men’s Results Loyola ' s wrestling team had some troubles this season as it compiled a 2-13-1 record against some of the top wrestling powers in the area. However, first — year coach Mike Jordan feels that his freshman dominated team earned some valuable experience. The Greyhounds lost seven contests by an average of just 15 points and did in fact forfeit 12 points per contest due to the lack of depth and unfortunate injur- ies. The team came away with wins over Haverford and Howard University and got stronger as the season pro- gressed. Many of the wrestlers had to sacrifice personal records to compete in higher we ight classes. In the final stretch of the season, captain Joe McGuire posted a 4-1 mark, Tim Caulfield came through at 4-2 and Bob Schutz, the only one of six Loyola wrestlers to advance in the regionals, finished with a 3-3 mark. The Art Exhibition is a yearly special event that involves Loyola with the Baltimore Community and provides everyone with an afternoon of cultural entertainment. Set Up Your Friend Dance The most recent addition to Loyola ' s vast array of social affairs, the Set Lip Your Friend dance provided more than the usual challenge to potential couples. Student Life 87 Oktoberfest This year’s Oktoberfest, a traditional midsemester beer blast, had a distinctly non-German atmosphere, as the band played mostly country rock music. The participants were not disappointed if embarass- ment, harassment and good clean dirty fun were obsessions as the twenty-four hour abusement began on midnight of October 3rd. The festivities included an open night challenge of endurance (both physical and mental) and the tradional enslavement was continued through the following day as the hounds were coerced into often irrational feats of bravery, originality and talent. Smiles never left the faces of these voluntary victims and one elated, though exhausted, hound commented from inside his transvestite attire If I live through this, I ' ll never die. 1.1 90 Student Life Student Life 91 92 Student Life m %f K •V.iiilW’ Student Life 93 Dance Marathon The Dance Marathon, often affectionately refered to as boogie till you drop , again took to their limits the various participants as well as a few bystanders for the benefit of the Maryland Association for Retarded Citizens. This years feast was organized by Senior Representatives — Donna Pattisani, Mike Fiocco, and Joann Demanss. Mass quantities of crabs were picked clean and mucho kegs of beer were tapped dry as music, volleyball, and dancing wild away the afternoon. The McAuley Courtyard disco opened at 7 p.m. with balcony boogieing and line dancing John Travolta style to the tunies of Blondie, Michael Jackson and The Supremes. The full effect of the beer and sun on the crabfilled crowd was the complete realization that we have made it, finally we are SENIORS!!! 186 Seniors Senoirs 187 Senior 100’s Night’s Cheep Beer . . . Cheep Band . . . Cheep Munchies . . . Cheep Shots . . . Lots of little Greyhound birdies whis- pered into the ears of Mary Jo, Jamie, Patty and Doug — who didn ' t hesitate to tell all to the crowd gathered on February 21st to celebrate the 100 Night countdown till graduation. Slanderous statements included revela- tions about Anne ' s hair, Tricia ' s pair, Little Bob and Big Red. The boys sang a song about themselves (natu- rally), while the girls sang about our four years at Loyola. Several libel suits are pending the outcome of graduation. The Loyola News Service: Telephone, Telegraph, Tele-Canelos lisiir ' Seniors 189 The Senior Prom The Senior Prom, the gala affair that is the crowning event of Senior Week, took place on Thursday, the twenty-eighth of May at seven o ' clock in the evening at the Hunt Valley Inn. The Class of 1981 ' s Formal Dinner Dance with entertainment supplied by Ma- jestic” was enjoyed by all who attended. It was a misty evening but that did not dampen the spirits of ' 81 as we partied well into the evening. Truly a night to be remembered and never to be forgotten. Senior Week Exams were over and four hard years of work were laid to rest. It was time to enjoy all we had worked for in that time. A cocktail party hosted by the Alumni Association followed by a Bull Roast fit for a king kicked off senior week. Of course, the party moved to McAuley later in the evening. The next night it was a Pina Colada Party in the Rat and more partying. It was nearing the end for the Class of 1981 to party together as carefree undergraduates. We lived it up to give us something to look back on in those hectic years ahead. Friends we will always have and some that will drift away came together for one last big week of partying. 194 Seniors The Baccalaureate Mass The beginning of the end started for the Class of 1981 with the Baccalaureate Mass held on May 30 at 7:30 P.M. in the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. Friends are relatives turned out to help the Class of 1981 celebrate in the graduation ceremonies. M sTW- Jr fTOTM Xf tv A V J .TlbvrjH 198 Seniors Commencement On Sunday, May 31 at 3 P.M., Loyola’s 132 annual commence- ment ceremonies took place on the Evergreen Campus. The Class of 1981 was awarded over 430 bachelor’s degrees. This beautiful Sun- day afternoon brought with it the conclusion of an era for the Class of 1981. It was a day wraught with uncertainty about the weather, joy over conquering a goal, and remorse as we knew it was the end of those carefree days of being an undergraduate. Time had passed so quickly since the fall of 1977 and the day we thought would never come was here. Then it was all over and it was now time to move on. 200 Seniors incites HC 55 sums future endcawi l tout iui ufiiibic n Sc Ji ZS.K. ■ f Every man has his daydreams Every man has his goal People like the way dreams have of sticking to the soul Thunderclouds have their lightening Nightingales have their song And don ' t you see I want my life to be Something more than long? The Staff of the Evergreen Annual. Chris Murphy Staff 231 This book is filled with photographs and memories from our very special time on the Evergreen Campus. Every attempt has been made to pack as much of the 1980-81 year into this book so that it will hold a deep meaning for all those in the Class of 1981. 1 feel confident that the book has succeeded in this goal. In four years the Class of 1981 has seen a lot of change in the Evergreen Campus and in itself. Loyola is not what it was and we are not what we were. We have both matured. There were times it seemed as though we were at Loyola forever and other times when those four years seemed to have slipped away in seconds. There were good times filled with fun and friends but it is time to move on now. This book, however, will always be a reminder of those very special times. To my very dedicated staff whom I have grown very close to — thank you for your hard work and perseverance with out you I could not have done it. To my fellow classmates, my friends — I wish you the very best, Good Luck and Good-bye. Michael S. Furnari Editor-In-Chief Evergreen ’81
