EVERGREEN W Evergreen Annual, for the Academic 1979-1980 Loyola College, 4501 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21210 MCMLXXV Dedication Introduction Faculty Administration Clubs Organizations.... Sports Student Life Seniors Senior Directory Ads and Patrons Yearbook Staff 6 ...10 36 54 78 132 178 187 204 4 Dedication IDYOIA CaLEGE INMAPyiAND Rev. Vincent Francis Beatty, S.J. December 5, 1913 to November 5, 1979 This is a sad moment for all of us at Loyola. We have lost one of Loyola’s greats. No one recognizes more than I what Father Vincent F. Beatty, President of Loyola from 1955 to 1964, did for the college. His presidency marked the beginning of a new era in the history of this Jesuit institution, and he was responsible for many of the good things all of us, students, faculty, and administrators enjoy on this campus today. Under his leadership, Loyola undertook its first new building program, and with his guidance, the school established its current physics-engineering curriculum. After Father Beatty left the presidency, he maintained his close ties with Loyola, serving as a member of the College ' s Board of Trustees. Father Beatty was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a great president, outstanding teacher, and most of all, he was a wonderful priest in the tradition of the founder of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. We shall miss him, but we cannot help but be confident that he is enjoying the reward of his full priestly life. Evergreen Campus 4501 North Charles Street Baltimore, Morylond 21210 301 323-1010 Graduation: an end and a beginning. Our freshmen have just started what seems to them like four long years and we, the seniors, are wondering where the time has gone. We ' ve made memories and friends which will never be forgotten. As we close one door, we open another. Some of us will keep in touch, while others will silently drift apart. We have changed in the past four years and so has Loyola. Donnelly Science Center, The John M. Curley, Jr. Memorial Field, Charleston Hall, and the newly renovated Beatty Hall are just starting to become familiar sights. All of the many changing faces are finally known to us. just as all of Loyola has become a part of us and of our experience, it is time for us to leave. This book is like a photo album, full of all we ' ve done and all the people we ' ve met. Years from now we will reminisce over the contents of this volume: remembering a face here, a story there, the classes, the teachers, the parties and the dances, all the fun times and a few of sad. All that we ' ve shared with one another is contained within these pages. This book is full of memories; photographs and memories. This is Loyola College of 1979-80. Administration Joseph A. Two rainouts and two weeks later, a rejuvented and hungry squad shut out then 6-1-1 Rider College, blitzed Delaware 5-2, and proceeded to run off a string of four shutouts against Old Dominion, Towson State, St. josph ' s and Catholic U. Loyola then travelled to American University, the winner receiving an NCAA Division I bid. A. U., ranked no. 18 in the nation, battled the Greyhounds under deplorable field conditions for a 1-0 win. Loyola re- bounded to tie nationally — ranked Philadelphia Tex- tile 1-1 in the first game on the new artificial surface. Coach Bullington, in his last game as Greyhound soc- cer coach after 16 years, then saw his men lose a 2-1 heartbreaker to Navy in the ECAC Championship game at Annapolis. The 1, 2, 3 punch of Pam Kues, julie Taylor, and Patty Allen remained consistent the duration of the season, while freshman Letitia Mossman showed promise for the future and a possi- bility to play either 2 or 3 next year. Kues and Allen proved to be a devastating doubles combo and both will be around for two more years. The women had their ups and downs, losing 5 of their first 6 matches, but then winning 4 of their next 5. After a 5 match losing skid, Loyola won 4 straight and were playing well going onto the State Tournament. Morri- son received good efforts from Mary Polvinale, Mary Ella Franz, Liz Lonam, and Anne Jordan while junior Patty Schwartz and newcomers Judy Ogaitis and Laurie Stascavage, a setter whose potential is unknown, turned in solid performances throughout the season. The young squad notched victories over Anne Arundel Community College and Catholic Uni- versity, and tied Goucher, Hood, and UMBC and losses to York, Trinity, Towson, Hopkins, arch- rival Mt. St. Mary ' s, American U., Salisbury State, Essex, and Georgetown. Defensively, the young team was paced by senior co-captain Linda Chelotti and Patty Albornoz a junior. Their constant hustle and drive gave confidence to the entire team. Kay Cries did a very nice job protecting the goal. Freshman janet Eisenhut and sophomore Maureen O ' Neill carried the ball continuously towards the forward line and also stopped offensive drives repeatedly. Molly Wollam, Mary McDonald, and the rest of the Loyola defense progressed nicely and con- tributed play which will be looked to in future years. Offensively, senior co-captain jeanne Kunkel sparked enthusiasm with her play as she mod- elled the meaning to cutting. Teammates List Gardill, Diane Whitely, and Fiona D ' Agostino car- 62 sports ried the ball with increasing confidence as the season progressed. ¥ Sports 63 Men ' s Swimnning Men ' s Wrap-Up This season saw the Men ' s Swim Team finish with a 5-6 overall record, a sixth place finish in the Tri-States and a ninth place in the Millersville Relays. Coach Tom Mur- phy ' s squad turned in steady performances establishing 15 new school records and one pool record. This year ' s Hounds were a young unit, consisting of 8 freshmen, 4 sophomores, and one junior. Captain Mike Soisson finished with a record setting 198.75 points, and as a junior is Loyola ' s 3rd leading point producer. Along with Soisson, the mermen were paced by several fine soph- omore performers. Alex Voultepsos finished the season with 114 tallies and a number of valuable first places. He was followed by John Finamore, Mark Lechowicz, and Brian Smith. Top point producers of the first-year men include all-around swimmer Joe Tolghman, with an out- standing 133.25 points, while George Hebner, Vincent Wroblewski, and Robert St. Ledger followed close be- hind. Coach Tom Murphy ' s Lady Greyhounds finished with a 2-9 sea- son and a seventh place finish in the MAIAW championships. The 1980 swimmers suffered from lack of numbers, not lack of courage or talent. The young team was paced by Barbara Horgan and co-captain Cathy Dannemiller, who each tallied over the 100 pt. mark. Solid performances of fellow sophomores, Amy Soisson, Kathy Peters, Maureen Comick, Terri Scarff, and Cate Maggiore produced a unit that battled courageously through an extremely tough schedule. The Greyhounds ' efforts notched victories over Es- sex and Notre Dame. Lone freshman Kathleen Finamore contributed a valuable 31.5 points for the season, while junior Patty Albornoz, in her first year of competitive swimming, improved her times with each meet. Freshman diver Marilynne Fay added to the squad ' s efforts scoring 11 points on the boards. The ' Hound harriers had victories over Johns Hopkins, Coppin State and Western Maryland, but were overpowered in the Essex Invitational, IC4A ' s, and the Mason-Dixon Cham- pionships. The team did not do well in conference, NCAA ' s or IC4A meets, but runners wbo competed did extremely well in the Maryland Marathon as the conclusion of the season. Most Valuable Player and team leader this year was Tim Turner, who set a school record at the Maryland Marathon, only to have it broken by John McAuliffe in the Boston Marathon. Sophomore Tom Caraher continued his sharpshooting, leading Loyola in scoring and free throw per centage. Mark DiGiacomo and Steve Collins, the only graduating senior, paced the ' Hounds in rebounding while scoring at a clip right behind Caraher. Loyola won big games against Assumption, Adelphi, and Pitt- Johnstown, closing the season with upsets of Towson St. (now Division I) and Randolph-Macon. Soph. Lou Salas and Freshman Skip Mitchell became unexpected heroes late in the season, Lou stepping in for the injured Stash Wojcik, and Skip coming off the bench to provide heroic efforts in the last two wins over TSU and Macon. Steve Collins finished his career in the Green and Grey with flashes of a new-found scoring punch and his leadership of the young team will be missed next year. Throughout the year, coach Anne McCloskey saw her women come back from deficits to add another ' W ' to their record. Loyola dealt setbacks to powerful Mt. St. Mary ' s (72-60), Towson State in their first confrontation (72-53), LaSalle (79-73), Bowie State (79-64), and Catholic University (75- 58). Loyola gained local recognition as well as a spot in the record books as Kathy O ' Halloran, Mary Beth Akre, and Mary Ella Franz continued their scoring prolifics. Mary Jo became the all- time scoring leader in women ' s basketball in Maryland, finishing with career total 1,434 points, while Mary Beth and Mary Ella closed out at 1,103 and 1,067, respectively. Well, to date, the Hound lacrosse men have lived up to their advance billing. The 5th ranked Greyhounds finished the season with a 10-2 record, losing only to UMBC, the number one team in the country and Penn State. Offensively, Connor has relied on a tough trio in junior Gary Hanley, 28 goals and 33 assists, senior Bill Mahon, 33 goals and 13 assists, and sophomore Tony Golden, 20 goals and 17 assists. These three attachmen have been supported by junior Alex Gavrelis, 9 goals, 2 assists, and Andrew Smith, 11 goals and 8 assists. Middies David Maynes has 12 goals and 6 assists and Neal Barthelme has 11 goals and 4 assists. junior Steve McCloskey has been out- standing in the nets turning back 128 while allowing less than 9 goals a game. Diane Lederer is the only member of last year ' s offense that re- turned and carried Loyola to 4th place in the USWLA Division II National Tournament. Mary Polvinale ' s play in the goal, combined with cover-point Patty Allen, were the main reasons for Loyola ' s outscoring the opposition by an average of 7 goals per contest. In rapid order, the team came back with four consecutive wins. The individual play has been highlighted by the very steady performance of two freshmen, Paul Moren and )ohn Finnegan. Our three veteran players, Brian Bartlett, Chris Spendley and captain Mike Hinkey have contributed in turning the tide for us. Fresh- man Tim Morris and junior Dave Kelly have also been very productive for us. Coach Ventura feels the real surprise to this year ' s addition of the team has been the outstanding performances of Paul Moran and John Finnegan. Finnehan has exhibited leadership qualitites to the degree that he has been selected for captain for 1981. Every team has its share of ups and downs, but Coach Andy Amasia ' s grapplers seem to have had more than their share. Last year they were plagued by the lack of experience and depth. This year Loyola wrestling suffered through numerous injuries that led to an average of at least 2 forfeits each match, a deficit that spelled the difference between victory and defeat on numerous occasions. The team concluded the 1980 season with an 0-11 record, but showed tremendous determination in their efforts to improve themselves and the Loyola wrestling program. Perhaps the best hopeful for Loyola is sophomore joe McGuire, with a season record of 7-3-1 at 126 lbs. McGuire at California State College in Pennsyl- vania in February of this year. Along with McGuire are freshman Todd Gaboury (150) and Bob Red- mond (158) who could open a few eyes in the future as they have shown signs of promise through out the season. The Loyola grapplers are a young, hard-working group and show definite signs of re-establishing wrestling at Loyola. Sports 77 ! i Beginnings 79 The freshmen arrived and the usual whirlwind of mov- ing in, starting new classes, meeting new people, and going to orientation activities started once again. As evidenced by these pictures, the bewildering flurry has subsided, and the freshmen have settled in at Loyola. Art Festival The fourteenth annual Loyola College outdoor in- vitational art festival was held this year from noon to five p.m., on September 23, 1979 at the John M. Curley, jr. Memorial Field. Sponsored by the Loyola Alumni Association and the Special Events Office, the show was a great success for Loyola and the artists. Mrs. Duane L. Peterson was this year ' s honorary chairman. Six separate prizes of $50.00 were awarded to the best exhibits, and a prize of $50.00 was awarded to the most popular exhibit. Following orders all through the day, the freshman served dinner and then were given a party by their masters for being such good sports. Oktoberfest The music of Edelweiss accompanied by the Aus- trian and Bavarian Dance Company transformed the cafeteria into Little Germany and once again the A.S.L.C. sponsored ethenic beer blast was on. All that attended enjoyed the dark beer, music and German style dancing. 1 The winners: 1st place, Paul Bollinger; 2nd place, )an Johnson. Halloween Party Midnight, October 27, 1979 — Led by the Commuter Students Association President, Tom lacoboni, this year ' s Halloween Party began with the entrance of a strange array of characters. Walking Crayola Crayons, Raggedy Ann and, Andy, a toothpaste, a six-pack of Heineken with legs and arms, clowns, and hillbillies comprised this zany crew. All in all, the bunch had a scream, on this spookiest night of nights. United Way Day Loyola ' s vast array of fund raising events this year included United Way Day — a more recent addition — in which faculty, administration, and students for once floundered their cash on a good cause. Some activities were a silent auction, raffles, and evening mixed and several pseudo — Las Vegas games for those stout hearted gamblers in the world. Words could not ex- press the banannas-in-the-face-stuffing-contest, and to further illustrate the atmosphere surrounding this No- vember 2nd. affair, one sophomore was deemed vic- torious in the create a new food competition as he smashed his body into the shape of a pancake. Loyola can now add to their endless list of accomplishments a new record of 99 personified crepes snuggly crammed onto (into?!) a King-sized body of water. O utrageous! Dance Marathon Dance, Dance, Dance. Sweat, Sweat, Sweat. Fall, Fall! No Further explanation is needed for the Greyhound ' s 4th annual dance marathon November 9th in which the relentless super steppers danced their day into the hearts and pockets of the student body and community. Proceeds from this event as well as the mixer which tops off the celebration are given to the Md. Association for retarded citizens. The A.S.L.C. pro- vided a twenty-one page social calendar of events to entertain students in the off hours. Animal Crackers , John Roarke and Selectrocution were just a few of the events on the calendar. Students were also able to express themselves through Art, Shakespeare, Business English, the religious musical, Celebrate Life and many other courses to fill out the month of January. 92 Stuclent Life Mr. Lincoln On February 20, 1980, Mr. Lincoln appeared in the Cafeteria. This was part of the Andrew White Series sponsored by Assistant Dean Dave Fried ' s office. Ed- ward Brice portrayed Mr. Lincoln which recently ran for five weeks on Broadway. Brice is a star of both stage and screen and is probably best known for his role of 15 years as Bill Bower on The Guiding Light . Football Intramurals Intramural football once again earned the support of its stout hearted participants as a number of veteran faces and some newly formed teams combined their talents to the delight of the Loyola community ' s and afternoon football fans. This year ' s race was marred by controversy as the winner Codex, had a complaint lodged against him for bumping the Kentucky Derby win- ner, Genuine Risk. The stewards ruled in favor of Codex, a decision that was later upheld by the Maryland Racing Commission. The Loyola crowd didn ' t seem too disturbed by the days events as they enjoyed the races, food, beer, and other infield activities before joining the homeward bound traffic. 126 Student Life Student Life 127 Intramural Softball One could easily tell that Spring had arrived on the Evergreen Campus with the beginning of the softball intramurals season. It all started at 11:00 on May 26th in the Rat, then there were parties in McAuley fol- lowed by the Prom, and then more parties in the McAuley Courtyard. It was a week of beer, food, fun, mud, and more beer as the Class of ' 80 partied togeth- er for the last time as seniors. « rT vHi T” SENIOR PROM Thursday, May 22, 1980 8:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M. Martin’s West Music by ‘Tlie Capris” 035.00 per couple Ticket price includes sit-down dinner, open bar with cordials bar, champagne toast and brandy snifter favors. Seniors 173 Baccalaureate Mass The Baccalaureate Mass was held at the Cathedral of Mary our Queen on Saturday, May 24. The Seniors were joined by their family and friends on this event- ful evening to celebrate in the joy of the upcoming graduation. Commencement Loyola ' s 131 annual commencement ceremonies took place on Sunday, May 25 at 5 p.m. on the Evergreen Campus. Over 450 students were awarded bachelor ' s degrees. A very memorable era came to an end for the Class of 1980. Those last few steps that were worked for so long were over so quickly. Time seemed to stand still through that walk across the stage to receive that diploma from the hands of Father Sellinger. Suddenly, it was all over and the Class of ' 80 entered into the ranks of Alumni. The days they pass so quickly now The nights are seldom long And time around me whispers when its cold Changes somehow frighten me Still I have to smile It turns me on to think of growing old For though my life ' s been good to me There ' s still so much to do So many things my mind has never known I ' d like to raise a family I ' d like to sail away And dance across the mountains on the moon . . . — )ohn Denver Poems, Prayers Promises Seniors 177 Senior Directory CATHIE ABEL 8140 Riverside Dr., Pinehurst, MD 21122 MARK ADAMS 6020 Loch Raven Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21239 ROBERT ADRIAANSE 44 Glen Rd., Bound Brook, NJ 08805 MARY AKRE 1549 Dellsway Rd., Towson, MD 21204 MARGARET ALBERT 9807 Hilltop Dr., Baltimore, MD 21234 MARTIN ALBORNOZ 6307 Park Heights, Baltimore, MD 21215 LISA ALMEDA 10512 Stable La., Potomac, MD 20854 SANDRA AMASCATO 204 3rd Ave. SW, Glen Bumie, MD 21061 PATRICIA ANDERSON 8140 Orchard Point Rd., Pasadena, MD 21122 WILLIAM ANDERSON 302 Valley Court Rd., Lutherville, MD 21093 SARA ARTHUR 1419 Francke Ave., Lutherville, MD 21093 L. The experience of this year have, though through quite a bit of trouble, been packed into the two hundred and eight pages of this book. The Class of 1980, the main reason for this edition of the Annual are now Alumni. They entered Loyola College during its one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary and have since witnessed this campus ' dramatic expansion and renovation. The four years of which the Class of ' 80 were an intergral part have come to an end. t hope this book will always be a reminder of those very special years. To my very dedicated staff who worked so long and hard on this book - I thank you, and to the Class of 1980 — I: wish you the very best this world has to offer. Michael S.
