Michael A. Lorenzo, S.J. ... He gave the last decade of his priestly life to Loyola, or rather, to the people at Loyola, jesuit priest, biologist, Outstanding Educator of America, Pharmacist ' s Mate - Fr. Michael A. Lorenzo, S.J. was many things to many people. We remember him — short and restless, like Zacchaeus or Ignatius — counseling, teaching, plucking the bass fiddle with Group”, putting the last loving touches on the renovated biology labs — at works of sweat and frustration and love. Fr. Mike died as he lived: intensely. He suffered for being too involved with people, and for being ahead of his times. He w orried and worked and laughed among us as a man on a mission. He tinkered, smoked like a chimney, spoke out, broke the bread of celebration for us and with us. He reminded us we were priestly; he loved ordinary folks like you and me. And so it ' s to him that we dedicate this yearbook with deep affection. — the Class of 76 5 6 7 The Campus of Loyola College The Residence of Fr. Dinner, danc- ing, and an open bar all combined together to make a truely delightful evening. 68 Senior Party The week before Commencement was filled with many parties. Among them was the Senior Party held at Loyola. This was the last opportunity for all of the 1976 graduating class to get together in a social atmo- sphere. Everyone was in a live ly mood while beer flowed at a record rate and music filled the air. 70 Baccalaureate Mass Loyola ' s Baccalaureate Mass was held at the Cathedral of Mary our Queen on the evening of May 29th. Along with the regular program mu- sic was provided by the Loyola Col- lege Concert Choir, the 10 PM Folk Group, and the cathedral organist. 71 72 Commencement Commencement exercises were held on the evening of May 30th in the Andrew White Student Center. The threat of rain prevented the ceremony from being held outside. The program proceeded well in spite of this. A special Bicentennial Pro- gram was also very well received. 73 Hans Mair speaks on America Wilson Bean receives the President ' s medal for 1976 from Fr Sellinger 75 77 78 oDO Okr m v 80 Octoberfest The second annual Octoberfest was a gala beer blast where students and faculty came together to cele- brate another Fall at Loyola. The evening was highlighted by German singing and dancing. A splended time was had by all at this October party. 31 82 33 Sam Ervin Sam Ervin, former senator and chairman of the Watergate Com- mittee gave a sixty-minute talk in Loyola ' s gym on September 15, 1975. Topics ranged from forced busing to the infamous Watergate scandal. Senator Ervin touched upon a bicen- tennial theme as he spoke of the courage of America ' s founding fa- thers. V . Art Festival The tenth annual Alumni Art Exhi- bition attracted a great crowd. Dis- plays varied from pen and ink draw- ings to three-dimensional sculp- tures. Frank Nicolette ' s oil paintings of ships were the most popula r ex- hibits of the fair. 85 87 Homecoming Dance Loyola ' s annual Homecoming Dance took place in the gym and cafeteria on October 11, 1975. That afternoon, the Greyhounds beat U.M.B.C. ' s team 2-0. At night, alumni, students, and faculty celebrated the victory to the sounds of Stu Zooter and Favor. 88 -w 89 90 91 Smoking Eating tng IN THIS AREA 93 94 95 Blood Day Each semester Loyola volunteers donate a pint of blood to the Red Cross. If the quota is met, Loyola students, faculty, administration, and their families are covered in the event of needing blood. 96 Crab Feast The Biology Department spon- sored a Crab Feast in the Fall for students and faculty. Everyone had their fill of Maryland ' s most famous attraction. 97 Nostalgia Night Girls in long pleated skirts and greasy-haired guys came to cele- brate Loyola ' s first Nostalgia Night. The November 15th party featured D), Jim Morton, a fifties — sounding band, and, of course, plenty of beer. Peachy keen and Are you going steady? rocked through the air as a new generation of greasers jitter- bugged to the tunes of Chalet. 98 99 Intramural Football 75 The Fall 1975 Intramural football season may have been the most successful since flag football was introduced to Evergreen five years ago. The program has been upgraded so much within the last three years, that Loyola ' s men ' s teams have beaten Towson State, a school of over 10,000 students, in both the ' 74 and ' 75 marathon football competition. The Loyola women ' s marathon football team scored the most points of any female squad while winning all four of their games, including conquering the defending champ, Towson ' s Mean Machine, 13-0 in one of the most memorable games played by either men or women in this year ' s competition. The Crabs, Buzz Boys, and the Little Rascals were the three outstanding teams of 1975 ' s campaign. The Buzz Boys did sweep through the regular season undefeated, beating both the Crab ' s and the Little Rascals and boasting the highest scoring offense and the No. 1 defense, however they ran into the red- hot Crabs in the final and fell victim 7-6. Even so their record in three years was truly amazing, winning 40 games while dropping only three including marathon. No other team could surpass that winning percentage in Loyola flag football history. The Crabs, whose regular season record was unimpressive while losing both to the Buzz Boys and the Little Rascals, peaked just at the right time. In the final against the Buzz Boys, the Crabs fell behind 6-0 late in the second half but in probably the most exciting drive of the season, quarterback Danny Sheehan led his troops down the gridiron culminating his masterful drive with a spectacular catch by John Stang in the promised land, which was followed by the extra point and the game. While beer flowed and feet stamped in the frozen crowd, Loyola players performed expertly on Herring Run Park ' s Field. The girls played especially well and routed Goucher, Essex, and Towson State ' s Mean Machine. ' 102 George Washington George Washington, the nation ' s first president and commander-in-chief of our army, spoke at Loyola. This Bicentennial event brought to Loyola ' s student body a glimpse of a very famous historical character George ' s knowledge and wit made the talk in the gym very entertaining. 103 Christmas Concert The Concert Choir gave a Christmas performance in Loyola ' s Chapel on December 7, 1975. The program consisted of traditional Christmas carols plus a musical story, St. NichoSas, by Benjamin Britton. The Sunday concert under the direction of James Burns was well attended. 104 105 107 January Term Courses Comics 108 Badminton 109 Europe Trip The art and culture trip to France and Italy left New York tor Paris on January 7, and returned 23 days lat- er. Headed by Mrs. Morris and Dr. Nachbahr, the group toured Paris, Nice, Venice, Florence, and Rome. The trip was highlighted by Loyola students swimming in the Mediter- ranean, climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and having an audience with the Pope. ' TV- ■j , 1 i 1 Galapagos Trip For the second year in a row, Dr. Graham headed a tour of the Galapagos Islands. There were difficulties on the trip as the group ' s chartered boat was not available when the 56 travelers reached Ecuador. Consequently, the group visited only three of the eleven major Gala- pagos Islands, but had many exciting experiences. Among these were a trip through the Amazon jungle, seeing Inca ruins, and attending the funeral of an Amazon witchdoctor. Middle East Trip Dr. Patterson and his group of 36 left Loyola for a 21 day tour of the Middle East. The group visited Cairo, Egypt; Amman, )ordan; Jerusalem, Nazareth, Tel Aviv, Israel; Athens, Greece; and Istanbul, Turkey. Camel riding, swimming in the Dead Sea, visiting Egyptian tombs, and seeing the Holy Land were just a few of the memorable experiences on this trip. New Orleans Trip The French Quarter, a midnight cruise on the Mississippi, plantation homes and “Breakfast at the Bren- nan ' s were just a few of the things enjoyed by the students visiting New Orleans in Mr. Leffman ' s “Joys of Liv- ing course. Star Spangled Fr. Dockery ' s unique January Term Course was a musical review of songs taken from Broadway plays. The participants worked, for credit, during January to make the play the success that it was. Tickets for the play were sold out well in advance of opening night. The play ran for two weekends with three perform- ances each weekend. Everyone went away from the play humming songs popularized by great stars on Broadway stages. Fr. lames Maier Sr. Sharon Burns Dr. Hans Mair 112 113 Kolish Back by popular demand, Kolish, a high point of Loyola ' s ' 75 lecture series, once again astounded the Loyola campus with his performance. The re- nowned mentalist and hypnotist ap- peared before a standing room only audience in a performance which was extended an hour because of its capti- vating quality. M 1 14 115 Basketball Marathon The Colt players romped over the WBAL disc jockeys at the United Fund ' s 54 hour marathon basketball game. Held in Loyola ' s gym, the March 5th, 6th, 7th event attracted a large crowd, which saw the WBAL team attempt a futile ralley only to lose by 10 points to the Colts. Loyola ' s team made a good showing against Essex, University of Baltimore, Calvert Hall, Towson State Col- lege, and Notre Dame. Wane Lewandovtski for Junior Class Pres Elections Elections for the student government officers and representatives took place March 8th with four stu- dents contending for president of ASLC and a number of other positions. Voting took place between 9 A.M. and 3 P.M. During that time campaign literature in the form of paper airplanes filled the cafeteria. Voter turn- out was not spectacular but it was not much lower than in past years. 117 St. Patty ' s Thirst Party A packed crowd in the cafeteria again reeled to the lively music of Gary Owen Caele Band for the third annual St. Patty ' s Thirst Party on March 12. Student and faculty, decked out in green received Irish buttons upon arrival and later munched on subs, pretzels, and chips accompanied by one of Ireland ' s, and Loyola ' s, favorite drinks, beer, of course! 1 18 Junior Prom The Hunt Valley Inn was the scene of the May 7th lunior Class Dinner Dance. ' ' The New Diablos provided the music, while Loyola students wined and dined into the wee hours of the morning. 121 Billy Joel — Hall Oates Concert Bodies swayed and rocked to the familiar songs of pianist Billy Joel on May 8th, forgetting the long wait outside before the doors opened. At 11 o ' clock P.M. Daryl Hall and John Oates arrived onstage and the sounds grew louder as the audience became lost in their great music. 122 123 BICENTENNIAL LoyolAmerica Gwynfor Evans As part of the LoyolAmerica weekend, Qwynfor Evans, a member of the British Parliament, spoke to Loyola students on April 29. He strongly urged Americans to retain an ethnic identity and to work for a sense of community in this Bicen- tennial year. Jerry Brown The Democratic governor of Cali- fornia, Jerry Brown, addressed a gathering of 4,000 Loyola students, press, and interested citizens on April 29. Announcing his candidacy for the ' 76 Presidential race, Brown emphasized his past achievements during the 30 minute question and answer period. Having had seven and one half years of jesuit educa- tion, Brown told the audience that he would use some Jesuit logic in his campaign for the Presidency. BSA Fair For the second year, the Black Students Association sponsored a cultural fair. Appearances by politi- cian, Clarence Mitchell, and Maurice Blackwell, prominent Baltimore priest, highlighted the afternoon ' s event. The Douglass Color Guard, Cutburt Dancers, and the Elec- tronic Apple provided the enter- tainment, with art exhibits from the Third-world Museum rounding out the activities. 127 Royal Lichenstein ' 4-Ring Circus Maryland Day festivities opened at 12:00 noon with the annual ap- pearance of the Royal Lichenstein VCRing Circus which drew the usual enthusiastic crowd who delighted in the antics of the entertainers. Maryland Day Awards At 3:30 Senator Charles Mathias, one of the recipients of the Andrew White Medal, presided at the awards. Nineteen Loyola seniors re- ceived the Who ' s Who Among American Colleges and Universities for 1976. The Distinguished Teacher of the Year award was given to Fa- ther Maier. Spirit of 76 Bicentennial Bash The Spirit of 76 Bicentennial Bash began at 5:30 and lasted until mid- night, on Maryland Day, drawing a large number of the Loyola Commu- nity and their friends. Inside the striped tent, members of the Star- Spangled cast and the Southern Comfort Dixieland Band performed. The enthusiastic crowd spilled out from under the tent surrounding the neaby food and beer concessions. 129 SPORTS Soccer Front Row (L to R) Tom Barnickel, Tim Linz, John Houska, Steve Spear, Keven Healy, Paul Antolin; Middle Row: Tom Lekas, Mario Scillipoti, Pete Notaro, Doug Lopet, lohn Shields, Tom Mulford, Nick DeCarolis, Bernie McVey, Les Chelmimak; Back Row: )im Loftus (Asst. Coach), Steve Dempsy, Greg Portera, Chuck Becker, Ian Reid, Art Sanchez, Ron Szczybor, Georgy Hayes, John Palvere, )im Bullington (Coach). The 1975 Soccer Season seemed like a roller coaster ride for Loyola, with many high and low points. The hooters opened the season by crushing the Seagulls of Salisbury 7-1 and continued their winning ways by shutting out the opposition during their next three games. The win streak ended at four when Randolf-Macon pulled a 2-1 upset victory on a disputed goal. However, the Hounds regained their form and went on to win their next three games, two of them being shutouts, only to lose to arch-rival Baltimore University 1-0 in a hotly contested match. The Hounds showed their poise and rallied to win their next two contests shutting out a powerful American University team 1-0 and overwhelming Philadelphia Textile 3-0 to avenge last year ' s 2-1 loss. Many considered the Textile game as one of the biggest upset victories in recent collegiate soccer history as Textile was undefeated and ranked third in the nation at that time. However, two days later, a rugged Johns Hopkins team surprised Loyola with a 1-0 victory under the lights at the Homewood field. The Hounds got back on the track and concluded the regular season playing excellent ball to shut out Mt. St. Mary ' s 5-0 and Catholic University 6-0. 132 1975 Soccer Results (13-3-0) Salisbury State W 7-1 Georgetown W 3-0 George Mason W 2-0 Washington College W 4-0 Randolph-Macon L 1-2 Western Maryland W 4-0 UMBC W 2-0 Towson State W 3-1 U. of Baltimore L 0-1 American U. The Hounds, who had been ranked as high as num- ber one in the NCAA Southern Collegiate Division during the regular season, received their fifth con- secutive NCAA regional bid and drew Old Dominion in the first round. Old Dominion broke a scoreless deadlock midway through the second half and held off the tenacious Hounds to preserve a 1-0 victory. Senior fullback Tom Barnickel clears the ball. junior Forward Ian Reid, the Hounds second highest leading scorer with 7 goals and 5 assists. Tim Linz tries to score on a head ball against Old Dominion. 134 Freshman sensation Pete Notaro who paced the Hound offense with 11 goals. 135 Senior fullback John Shields had an outstanding season which saw him garner All-Conference, All- South, and All-American Honors, a berth in the East- West All Star game, and a NASL draft pick with the Miami Toros. Shields not only prevented goals but also scored them this season, tallying seven times. John Shields, Bernie McVey, and )ohn Houska all converse to make a spectacular save against B.U. Sophomore |ohn Houska, Loyola ' s All Msaon-Dixon and All- American goalie. Sophomore goalie John Houska also netted All-Con- ference, All-South, and All-American Honors. He was credited with nine shutouts giving him 16 career shut- outs in 32 games. Tom Mulford, Greg Portera, Doug Lopez, Bernie McVey, and Les Chelminiak were also named to the All Mason-Dixon conference teams. Crunch goes Nick DeCarlos as he hustles for a headball against Old Dominion. The Kickers concluded the season with a 13-4 over- all record giving 12 year coach Jim Bullington an impressive 121-38-8 overall record. There were many great individual performances dur- ing the year. Freshman sensation Pete Notaro paced the Hounds offensively with 11 goals. The former Patterson High standout picked up the scoring slack created by the loss of Jack Quaranta to graduation last year. Junior Ian Reid had another good year as he tallied 12 points on seven goals and five assists. As in the past, it was Loyola ' s stingy defense that thwarted and dazed the opposition allowing them only eight goals in 17 games. Only one team scored two goals against Loyola all season. The fullback squad of senior tri-captains Doug Lopez, Tom Mulford, John Shields and junior Greg Portera considered by many to be the best in the South. Coach Betsy Fair, who initiated the program in 1974, saw her team represented on the State Collegiate All- Star Team by senior Anne McLaughlin. Another Loyola High graduate, sophomore Tom Shaughness captured the Loyola College standard in the 100 freestyle, 200 free, and 500 free. The 1975-76 basketball season was a strange one, to say the least. It was a season which saw the team get off to a bad start, lose its own holiday tournament, and completely reverse itself, leaving unfulfilled expectations in the wake of a 84-61 loss to the University of Baltimore in the semi-final round of the Mason- Dixon Tournament. For Morris Cannon, Mark Rohde, and )im Smith, it was the culmination of outstanding careers which saw Cannon wind up sixth on the all-time scoring list while Rohde became the 14th member of the school ' s scoring list. Smith, who had not enjoyed a great deal of success, blossomed at mid-season into one of the top players in the Mason-Dixon Conference, earning all-state and all-conference honors along with Connon. An encouraging 94-85 loss to Holy Cross, a National In- vitational Tournament participant, served notice to all that the Greyhounds were a team to be reckoned with and hopes soared for a Mason-Dixon championship. However, two nights later, those hopes were dashed as the Loyola offense was impotent in a 61-45 loss to Towson State in the Metro Tourney. Wins over Johns Hopkins and Salisbury State gave Loyola a 2-2 record at the Christmas break. In their own tournament, the Greyhounds sput- tered to a third place finish, losing to upstate St. Thomas in the opener and ripping Lycoming in the consolation round as fresh- man jack Vogt received all-tourney recognition. Back within Mason-Dixon play, Bob Reilly scored a career high of 25 points and sophomore Paul Eibeler sparked the offense but it was not enough to overcome the University of Baltimore, A late rally some nights later came up short as Navy downed the Hounds, 77-72. George Mason made Loyola its 26th straight victim at home with an 87-83 overtime win as the Hounds dipped to 3-6 on the season. |im Smith pulled in 17 rebounds against Towson State to neutralize the Tigers ' size as Loyola snapped its iosing streak with a 65-57 upset win to start the Hounds rolling. Randolph-Macon and Hopkins fell next as Smith ' s rebounding led the way. Catholic dealt Loyola a 74-72 loss in Washington before the Hounds pulled even again at .500 with a 102-79 romp over St. Mary ' s with Smith scoring 18 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. The Hounds went over .500 with an overtime win over UMBC before losing a 50-46 contest to Towson. UMBC fell again the next week and the Hounds avenged their first loss to George Mason as Rohde scored his 1,000th point with an 84-70 victory. After losing to Mount St. Mary ' s, the Hounds romped over Catholic in their return engagement to set up a rematch with B.U. which the Bees won, 70-66. Salisbury State shot 67 percent to whip the Hounds as Loyola dipped to 11-11. Back at Evergreen, Smith ' s tapm with one second left in overtime nipped the Mounties, 74-72. Their final Loyola appear- ance found him pulling in 21 rebounds to go with Cannon ' s 24 points as the Hounds beat American in double overtime, 85-81. The key was a 48-foot desperation basket by Smith at the end of the first overtime to send the game to a second overtime period. After finishing third in the conference, Loyola opened the tournament with a 80-66 romp over George Mason to gain the tourney semi-finals where B.U. ended the Loyola season with a 84-61 win. The Bees went on to win the conference title and finished runner-up to Old Dominion in the NCAA Regionals. With John Prather, Smith, Rohde, and Cannon the only gradu- ating seniors Coach O ' Connor will have a nucleus of nine lettermen from which to build next year ' s team. )im Smith taps the ball to a teammate. Most of the credit goes, of course, to the senior class. This is their book. I think that I speak for every underclassman when I say that it has been a real privilege to work with so many outstanding people in the Class of 1976. The hopes and prayers of everyone you leave behind here go with you. When you open this book I hope you will remember the good times at Loyola College. Thanks.
