B JL 1 ' « •. • Table Of Contents Dedication Prologue Faculty Organizations Sports Student Life... Senior Section Ads Evergreen Staff Dedication The Class of 1975 would like to dedicate its efforts to a great man:. Fr. Eugene Ahern He came to Loyola in 1971, assuming the roles of Campus Ministries coordinator and Theology faculty member. In 1973, he took over the duties of counselor and chaplain of the Evening and Graduate divisions. While at Loyola, he did everything possible for the stu- dents, even if it meant criticizing them through his let- ters in the campus newspaper. Eugene Ahern was a father to anyone coming to him as a son or daughter. His assistance and guidance were there for the asking. He was always willing to lis- ten, yet he was not a man who would only sit and wait for someone to approach him. An outgoing man, he was always involved with the students. He was a man among us, always asking for concern beyond our- selves. In his sermons he has asked, “Just how far do we want to get involved? Often just far enough to say we ' re interested, but not far enough to let our interest change our lives. He was the personification of concern. Fr. Ahern has greatly influenced the Loyola College Community; an influence that should not end with his death. His work is not to be forgotten, not merely to be remembered, but to be carried on. How far do we want to go in? What a shameful answer . . . ' Just far enough to say I ' ve been there ' . I ' ve not reached the finishing line— always more to come— suffering and joy, deeper faith, stronger commitment, I look ahead and not to the past. — Fr. Ahern ! 5 Loyola College: Seventy- Five 6 8 The doors fly open, revealing the multitudes- students packed together like tuna fish. One of the most notable changes in the 1974-75 edition of Loyola College II is the increased number of students. The Freshman Class is the largest ever to be accepted at Evergreen, but it is the com- pactness of the campus which gives one the illu- sion of the multitudes. At the change of classes the halls become an arena for collision. In the student center, chairs and table space are as scarce as good food. Again this year, the lack of a large enough student lounge com- plicated the space problem. And parking, as all commuters know, is a myth. Space has been, and will always be, the final frontier at Loyola. But crowds, congestion, and chaos are the growing pains which accompany the challenge that an expanding community must face to attain a new significance and yet maintain a traditional excellence as a small liberal arts college. 9 10 I ' m fixing a hole where the rain gets in and stops my mind from wondering where it will go. m 12 Loyola has responded to the challenge. It is re-evaluating itself and its obligations to its students. The Committee on Day Division Studies (CODDS) convened this year. Its program consists of re- viewing the academic structure and its effects on the student body. Construction and relocation of of- fices are emblematic of inward re- examination. While the institution takes time to revitalize itself, the students too take time to prepare themselves for the future. 13 14 15 One is most alone when the tangle of facts is unknotted into sense. The day ' s inconsistencies are often dealt with in those quiet times when chaos yields to creativity. Knowledge that can never be found in the classroom is uncovered, and ideas are produced which transcend grades. 17 Lovely Rita, meter maid . . Will you still need me, Will you still feed me, When I ' m sixty-four? 18 I i 19 Loyola is not concerned merely with academia; rather, it strives for the development of the whole person. The college ' s bi-weekly activity periods and varied social func- tions are aimed at balancing intellectual growth and social growth. The increased parti- cipation in the intramural program makes it an integral part of the curriculum, while women ' s sports continue to become more attractive. Numerous social functions and the addition of the new student Rathskellar are the tangible results of a raise in the ac- tivity fee. Expanding education, all day and all ways, is Loyola ' s new tradition. Yet in wake of all this activity, students still find time to unwind. One may wonder why all good things must come to an end. The answer— so that tomorrow we may be- g in again . . . Please don ' t wake me, Please don ' t shake me, . . . I ' m only sleeping. 23 Administration Mr. Melanson Very Reverend Joseph A. Nick Sarno, Statistician Mark Kreiner, Trainer Dave Lewis. 1974 turned out to be a Cinderella season for Loyola ' s soccer team. Plagued by late season injuries to four starters, they concluded the regular season with 12 wins, 1 tie, and only 1 loss— a 1-2 final score at the hands of a superior Philadelphia Textile squad. They earned a Mason-Dixon Co-Championship with B.U. by defeating UMBC 2-1 and tying B.U. 1-1 in hotly contested playoff games. Many considered the two B.U.- Loyola confrontations as the best soccer games the area has ever seen. In the NCAA Southern Regional Tournament, The Hounds beat E. Stroudsburg only to lose a 2-3 heartbreaker to Federal City. Coach )im Bullington, in his eleventh season coaching soccer at Loyola, hit the century mark in wins when Loyola beat Western Maryland 3-2. Co-Captain lack Quaranta paced the Hounds offensively with 13 goals and 8 assists, followed by Forwards Ian Reid (13 goals, 5 assists), Les Chelminiak (5 goals, 10 assists), and Nick DeCarolis (6 goals, 7 assists). Frosh Goalie )ohn Houska and Backup |oe Platek combined for 91 saves as defense again proved to be the Hounds ' strength. First Team All-Mason-Dixon berths were awarded to Co-Captains Ernie Cox ' and jack Quaranta, Forward Ian Reid and Fullback John Shields. Loyola was represented on the second team by junior Fullback Tom Mulford, while halfback Bernie McVey and John Houska received Honorable Mention. 54 1974 Game Results Coach Bullington, in a pensive mood . BU ' s Dale Roth and Loyola ' s Nick DeCarolis battle for the ball in the Mason-Dixon Championships. 56 Nick DeCarolis ' miraculous scissor kick against Federal City ties the game at 2-2. 57 Quiet All-American In his four years at Loyola, Ernie Cox has paced the Hound Booters to four appearances in the NCAA Southern Regionals and two visits to the Mason-Dixon Championship. His fresh- man year, 1971, Ernie helped Loyola to a 15-0-0 undefeated season, a Mason-Dixon Champion- ship and the NCAA Southern Regional Title. This year, the easy-going, soft-spoken senior captained his team to a 14-2-2 overall record and a Mason-Dixon Co-Championship with B.U. Throughout his four years at Evergreen, the agile midfielder has garnered local and nation- al recognition for his adept ball handling. He was named to the All Mason-Dixon soccer teams his last three years at Loyola and was selected to the All-American soccer team his junior and senior years. He also played in the East-West Senior Bowl. The 5 ' 9 native of Llighlandtown, who has played soccer since he was ten, was the Balti- more Comets ' second round draft pick in the 1975 North American Soccer League ' s College Draft. In his first season at Evergreen, the cagers posted a successful 16-11 record, narrowly missing a bid to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Tournament. O ' Connor ' s debut was a disastrous one as the Greyhounds dropped an 80-58 decision to Georgetown, a team that went on to earn a spot in the NCAA University Division Tourney. The new coach ' s first win came two nights later as the eager ' s out-lasted Johns Hopkins, 80-75, in the first round of the Schaeffer Classic. With little time to celebrate, Loyola went up against NCAA College Champion Morgan State, with all-American Marvin Webster. Junior Mark Rohde handled Webster well, outscoring him (16-10) and out-rebounding the 7- 1 star (10-9). It wasn ' t sufficient though, as Morgan snuck by, 56-48. In the third place game, Towson State fell 64-58 as freshman Bob Reilly and Morris Cannon gained all-Tournament honors. Loyola took a 3-3 record to the Scranton Holiday Tourney after whipping Washington College (104-78) and bowing to American U. (96-52). Up against Colgate at Scranton, senior Kevin Robinson put in an errant Rohde desperation shot at the buzzer to give the Hounds an exciting come-from-behind 79-78 win. Scranton won the Tourney finale through 94-89. Rohde was a unanimous all-Tourney selection. Rodney Floyd, after a year and a half layoff, made his seasonal debut by scoring 26 points to spark the Hounds past Baltimore U., 82-79. UMBC bowed 67-59 before the Hounds staved off Western Maryland in their home opener, 71 -64 The winning streak reached four as Loyola trimmed George Mason, 91 -79. Robinson tied Ed Butler ' s career assist mark as the Hounds ripped Roanoke, 89-83, to remain undefeated in Mason-Dixon play. Floyd )oined the 1,000-point club as the Hounds dropped their first M-D game to nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon, 89-80. After a 77-75 win over Hopkins, the Hounds went north losing to St. Peter ' s (85-74) and St. Bonaventure (98- 73). Salisbury State fell back in Baltimore, 77-67, before Loyola lost to Towson State in the Civic Center, 72-58. The Greyhounds beat UMBC, 61-56, and returned to the Civic Center where they edged Mt. St. Mary ' s, 83-78 in overtime. Bob Reilly ' s 20-foot jumper with four seconds to go in regulation capped a Loyola comeback before the Hounds broke it open in the extra period. A third win over Hopkins followed, sparked by Mike Lamb ' s 100th career point, and then the Hounds had their home finale spoiled by Towson, 98-82. Kevin Robinson, senior captain, salvaged the evening by becoming the twelfth member of the Loyola 1,000-point club. Loyola closed out the regular season by beating Catholic U. (80-71) and losing to the Mount (67-59). An 8-4 conference record earned the Hounds the second seed in the M-D Tourney. The Hounds put one of their finest efforts together in the first round, eliminating the Mount, 90-80, as Floyd, Cannon, and Rohde all scored more than 20 points. In the semi-finals, championship hopes faded as Baltimore U. averaged an earlier defeat by winning, 72-62. The win enabled B.U. to go to the NCAA Regionals, an honor which would have gone to the Hounds had they been victorious. The 16-11 mark was an improvement over the previous season ' s 12-14. The squad loses seniors Robinson, Lamb, and Paul Farnan while the future looks bright with the freshman trio of Bob Reilly, Fran Palazzi, and Paul Eibeler. year. An atmosphere of party characterized every- thing from our own jazz-filled night club to the President ' s gala anniversary party. The fun-ness of it all was unmistakable. These good times served to loosen up the otherwise tense existence of being a student. 98 INTACT THEOLOGT DEf 99 Egil Krough Appearing in one of the SGA- sponsored lecture series on Octo- ber 15, 1974, Egil Krough ad- dressed concerned students about his role in Watergate . Dixieland — Loyola has given Southern hospitality a new meaning!! Maryland Day April 18th marked the day that Loyola chose to celebrate its traditional observance of Maryland Day. The event honors the memory of Andrew White, S.)., a |esu it known to have said the first Mass in the territory of Maryland. Archbishop Wil- liam D. Borders, D.D., spoke on the future of Catho- lic higher education in America which was followed by the presentation of medals to three distinguished citizens of the Baltimore community. Seventeen Loyola seniors received certificates noting inclusion in the 1974-75 edition of Who ' s Who Among Stu- dents in American Colleges and Universities. Unfortunately, most of the students discovered they would not get rich playing the horses and some even realized they may actually have to work for a living. The Class of 75 set the pace; this book is an image of its path. The Loyola we remember has graduated with us . . . The purpose of Evergreen 75 is to capture not only the personality of our class, but of all the people whose presence helped to influence it. If we have brought a smile to the face of anyone who opens its cover, our efforts have not been in vain. I, personally, would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to bring you this book. The friends I ' ve made and the talented people I ' ve met helped to make it all such a worthwhile venture. On behalf of the Class of 75, I ' d like to say goodbye to all the people we leave behind. What more can I say than, It ' s been real . . . Gina Owens Editor-in-Chief
