Welcome to Loyola High School As we conduct you on this tour of our school, we ask you to look about and examine closely what you see, for there is something special here. The secret soul of Loyola, the hidden source of its unique School Spirit is an ATTITUDE OF CENEROSITY. In all the year's en' deavors, the SPIRIT OF GIVING lives at Blakelield, We have come to appreciate this spirit by frequent participation in Our Lord's generous sacrihce in the Mass. We have caught the spirit from the inspiring example of our selffsacrificing parents, and from our dedicated teachers, whose highest aim is to mold their students into the likeness of Christ, into greatfhearted men of strength and balance in a weak and unstable world. We have learned from watching each other in action: doggedly studying when the going was distasteful and lacked success, enthusiastically working on a class project though the job was big and the hour late, blocking and tackling on the practice field when it was all work and no glamour, continuing to cheer the team on when the rain was pouring down and we were twelve points behind, long after the last class of the day has passed, working on in the Band and Camera Club and in a host of other extracurricular activities, seeking the glory of God, the honor of Loyola and the improvement of personal talents. In this atmosphere, we seniors have spent four swift and happy years, not always living up to the ideal, it is true, but at least coming to realize that we should. We are about to take our leave, enriched by our experiences, inspired in our efforts to develop this expansive, soul' satisfying formula for a full and truly successful life. Come along with us nowg let us show you the Loyola we have come to know and love, its outward beauty and its inward strength. We wish you as much success, and more, in your quest for Christian manhood, We share your fondness for our teachers, who have aided. guided, and, ahove all. inspired us to do our hest. We were taught to love Loyola hy those who preceded us. We entered as carefree hoys and hope that we are graduf ating as young men. wellfeducated in mind and will, well founded in Christian ideals, We hope that we have passed down to you a little something of what we have received, something of that eager generosity which has become symbolic of Loyola over the years. We are confident that you will uphold the fine traditions which you inherit. that you will grow in the grand Spirit which has shone so hrilliantly from you thus far. For your enthusiasm and loyalty, for your interest and cooperation, we extend our hand in gratitude and say Thank You! Representatives of the people. A notftofbefdenied deter' mination on the court and in the stands was the deciding factor in the Dons' rise to basketball fame. The experts predicted a rough time Loyolafwise and two early lopfsided losses seemed to confirm their views. But a 5562 thriller over favored Gilman started us on the road to proving the experts wrong. Each Friday night found the team a step further on the way, constantly coming from behind, learning to stay calm in those final, frantic minutes, ever growing in confidence and teamfwork. Suddenly our dreams were shattered by surprising losses to St. joe, Towson Catholic and WashingtcJn's john Carroll. But this Hargadencoached team wanted to win too badly. Playing off their Hrstfplace tic with Mt, St. joe, the Dons conquered a twelvefpoint thirdfperiod deficit for a thrilling 61-58 win. Before business gets underway, Debating President Hathaway, fresh from a T.V. appearance, faces the friendly criticism of Yearbook Editor Prodey and Boosters' head Jefferson. All maior extracurricular ac- tivities have a voice in the Student Council. The function of the Student Council is to ensure the cooperation of the student body with the school officials in promoting the best interests of the school. This sentence from the school catalogue well describes the role played this year by our twenty-two class presidents and the heads of major activities. With Mr. Albert H. -lenemann, S.J., as moderator, and G. Robert lackall, as president, the Council enjoyed one of its most successful years. It worked diligently to promote attendance at games, rallies and dances, participation in drives, and support for other activities. One of its main tasks was the direction of the Spirit Cup Contest, a competi- tion to encourage outstanding manifestations of school spirit. Were these efforts worthwhile? In answer, one need only recall that enthusiasm for Loyola's activities glowed bright all through the year. Our thanks to the Student Coun- cil, the body which kept fanning the flames! The practice, inaugurated this year, usually found many in attendance on Friday afternoons. The Orphans' Committee plans another Satur- day trip to St. Vincent's. There they will spend an exhausting but rewarding afternoon of football, wrestling, basketball and games with the boys. The interior must flow over into the exterior, and increased interior conviction brought further external activity. Inspired at their weekly meetings by Fr. Graham. and guided in their activity by prefect john Dclclos, the Sodality slowly shaped itself into a wellfknit group of leaders who undertook apostolic works: the annual Senior Career Conference Day, visits to St. Vincent's Orphanage, cooperation with the Baltimore Sodality Union in a Christmas party and other projects. but above all, by effective leadership in the daily routine of intellectual, athletic extracurricular and social life at Loyola. Pabhk Speakfhg This was a year of innovation in Loyola's speech ac' tivities. Abandoning the practice of debating both sides of a single fixed subject, the discussion form of public speaking was adopted, since it seemed to offer greater flexibility and a wider scope of practical and vital topics of the day. With the accent on the United Nations and our nation's participation in solving the great current social problems, a whole host of activities was hung upon the new frame' work: the Voice of Democracy contest, four successful radio broadcasts, several discussions with other local high schools, retention of the Knights of Columbus Trophy in competition with Maryvale, two very well-received telecasts, to mention but the highlights. This fast-paced program was augmented by discussions among the members of the Bellarmine Society, thus affording all ample opportunity to express themselves before others and to grow in knowledge of public affairs. The imaginative direction of Mr. Gallahue, S.J., com- bined with the zeal and cooperation of the members enabled the Society to achieve the goals it set for itself. The gratify' ing results of this year of innovation indicate a promising future. Loyola is proud of its public speakers. During one ol the monthly Fathers' Club meet- ings Mr, Dziwulslri finds it pleasant and protltable to check with Mr. Costello on his son's progress. Reverend Father Zeits, S.J., Mrs. Derr and Mr. Jaster, S..l., modera- tors and president of the Mothers' Club. Their task was made much easier by the enthusiastic coopera- tion of the Mothers' Club board members. These women devoted themselves to those countless details which were an integral part of this year's successes. MOTHERS' and FATHERS' CLUBS He's hero againl . . . One of the most popular people at the annual Christmas party, Santa seems to draw plenty of attention from the small fry. We have learned generosity through the inspiring example ot our parents . . . We have been inspired as we watched the added manifestations of devotion displayed by our parents in the Mothers' and Fathers' Clubs. They made sure that home and school formed a single working unit, geared for our welfare, as they attended frequent meetings, talked over mutual problems with our teachers, and heard probing analyses on teenfagers by Fr. Blee and Fr. Graham. They looked to the future, too, dedicating time and money to insure financial success for a host of activities. Oyster roast, fashion show, the mammoth Easter Monday Party-the proceeds of all these events have contributed handsomely towards the conf stant improvement of Loyola. Our deep thanks go especially to Reverend Father Rector and Mr, jaster, moderators of the Mothers' Club. to Fr. Ruppenf thal, Fathers' Club moderator, to Mrs, George F, Dcrr and Mr. G. Benson Waldmaii, the completely devoted presidents of the organizations, and to the self-forgetting members of their boards, Decisions, 1957, tor the Fathers' Club . . . Mr. McCambridge, board member, Mr. Waldman, president, and Fr. Ruppenthal, moderator, seem to be discussing some very important business. The scene is the school recreation room, the time, one oi the monthly meetings. - 6 ? 0 4 P, 147' 0 X- okg oo 0 0 ' , - .bf'y' 9 e Iniqo ay- I 1 Amidst gay and colorful decorations, members of the Mothers' Club talk about the singing of the Woodstock College octette and enjoy the holiday atmosphere ofthe Christmas meeting. Old memories are recalled as music adds to the merry atmosphere of the annual Alumni Reunion. Old Grad ol a year ago, Ed Hargaden, Jr. returns from Georgetown to encourage mem- bers of this year's football team at the Calvert Hall rally. Four years later, Dan Fall, lLoyola High-l953l, greets our seniors on their visit to Loyola College in December, and gives his views on the advantages of continuing education in Baltimore under the Jesuits. gonzui- t 1 1 ALUMNI Alumni, old and new, return to their Alma Mater for the Annual Reunion on the Blakefleld campus in October.
