Kellarmiuc Debating Society To develop skill and fluency in public speaking is the basic aim of the Bellarmine Debating Society. Realizing that confidence in expressing oneself can be had only by hard work and constant practice, farfseeing juniors and seniors devoted themselves eagerly to the task of selfeimprovement under the able direction of Mr. Sanders, SJ. Frequent intrafteam debates were staged to give all equal opportunity to think and speak before an audience. Such praef tice within the school walls enabled students to step outside and represent Loyola in the Voice of Democracy, American Legion and Hearst Oratorical Contests. In addition, Loyola regularly participated in the various speech activities of the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League. This year's controversial debate topic, Resolved: that Governmental subsidies should be granted -to high school graduates who qualify for additional training, was thoughtfully argued pro and con by seniors Porterfield, Cooney, Fogarty and Taylor, and by juniors jackall and Hathaway. Were we successful? Certainly the poise and confidence of individual members developed marvelously. That Loyolafs wide reputation for turning out polished speakers grew with the year is evidenced by the fact that four finalists were placed in the Voice of Democracy Contest, the League Declamation Contest was won by Ben Tresselt, the Original Oratory Contest by Nelson Cooney, and the new Knights of Columbus trophy was brought to Blakefield. MR. JASTER, SJ., moderator, outlines schedule of approaching debates for otlllcers Bartha and Tresselt. L-f Potential young speakers of today need guidance and training to develop into the eloquent orators of tomorrow. This is the func' tion of the Cardinal Gibbons' Debating Society. Its members hear weekly explanations of debating techniques by their competent moderator, Mr. jaster, SJ. Intrafteam debates are staged and constructive criticisms given. Valuable experience is also gained by frequent contests with other schools. By spring, they are eager to display their ability in the Optimist Contest. Last year saw three members appear as Eastern finalists, and this year gives grand promise of similar success. Thus, future senior debate teams develop. More important, every hardfworking speaker reaps a personal gain, a measure of self'confi- dence and real speaking ability which will be his throughout life. INTRA-TEAM DEBATE sharpens mind and wit. Michael Hill- man onioys putting across his point as opponents Scharper and Brocato, chairman Tresselt, and colleagues Alt and Zetlmeisl pay careful attention.
