GRAHAM, Moderator and Holly Porter, Prefecl, discuss the success of Sodality Union Day of Recollection. TONY CAPIZZI finds it a pleasant and prolitable weekly experience to visit St. Vincent's Orphanage. X. 019' iv -seq, TOM DWYER leads Sodality in mental prayer. Fifteen minutes of daily meditation is a maior exercise in a Sodalist's spritual day. MEMBERS of Eucharistic Committee, Fog- arty, Hubbard, Culotta, and Cooney, prepare chapel altar for daily Mass. SODALISTS Taylor and Jackall talk over staging problems with Joe Tormey in preparation for play put on at St. Vin- cent's Orphanage. Fresh with a vital force four hundred years young, the Sodality applied itself with vigor, this Ignatian Year, to its main objective: the sanctificaf tion of its members and of the whole school via prayer. good example and good works. In its role as the leading association in the school. the Sodality sponsored many activities. The Fresh' man Party helped acquaint our latest arrivals with Loyola's spirit, and the Second Annual Career Cohference Day aided seniors in planning their futures. Participation with the Baltimore Sodality Union in a Christmas Party at St. Leo's Orphanage, the annual Day of Recollection, and the May Pro- cession also highlighted the year. THE LOYOLA Ends it difficult to estimate the success of the Sodality, since its main force is felt in the spiritual Held. But we know that our school was a better place because of its manly influence. The Sodalists themselves, by faithfully fulfilling their weekly spiritual projects and daily duties, be' came strong in a deeper love for Christ and His Mother, and better instruments for leading their world, Ad jesum, per Mariani. MR. COSTELLO, S.J., Moderator, checks the attendance with officers Mulrooney, McCambridge, Dugan and O'Neill. AN EXPLANATION of the Sodality Rules is part of every meeting. Mr. Costello has some encouraging words to say to his eager probationors. junior Svdalify Youth is generous and idealistic, and to such does the junior Sodality issue its resounding challenge. For it proposes to mold men, under the guiding hand of Mary, to the heart of Christ, and to set them on a way of life which will make them surer, no matter what their adult vocation, of saving their own souls and the souls of all they meet. One asking admittance into the So' dality must appreciate its rules. Through weekly meetings he learns especially how to keep in contact with God through prayer. Only after having proved faithful to his daily spiritual duties and evincirig a desire to go on, will he be permitted to make his Act of Consecration and take up the at once prayerful and apostolic duties of a senior sodalist. An oppressing task? Not so to the scvcntyfhve Loyola freshmen and sophof mores who are happy in learning how to meet the challenge of this way of life. MR. JASTER, SJ., moderator, outlines schedule of approaching debates for otlllcers Bartha and Tresselt. L-f Potential young speakers of today need guidance and training to develop into the eloquent orators of tomorrow. This is the func' tion of the Cardinal Gibbons' Debating Society. Its members hear weekly explanations of debating techniques by their competent moderator, Mr. jaster, SJ. Intrafteam debates are staged and constructive criticisms given. Valuable experience is also gained by frequent contests with other schools. By spring, they are eager to display their ability in the Optimist Contest. Last year saw three members appear as Eastern finalists, and this year gives grand promise of similar success. Thus, future senior debate teams develop. More important, every hardfworking speaker reaps a personal gain, a measure of self'confi- dence and real speaking ability which will be his throughout life. INTRA-TEAM DEBATE sharpens mind and wit. Michael Hill- man onioys putting across his point as opponents Scharper and Brocato, chairman Tresselt, and colleagues Alt and Zetlmeisl pay careful attention. Hardimzl Gibbaus Debating Satisfy SPEAKERS USE REFERENCE section of the library to best advantage as they prepare points for the verbal battles to come. Kellarmiuc Debating Society To develop skill and fluency in public speaking is the basic aim of the Bellarmine Debating Society. Realizing that confidence in expressing oneself can be had only by hard work and constant practice, farfseeing juniors and seniors devoted themselves eagerly to the task of selfeimprovement under the able direction of Mr. Sanders, SJ. Frequent intrafteam debates were staged to give all equal opportunity to think and speak before an audience. Such praef tice within the school walls enabled students to step outside and represent Loyola in the Voice of Democracy, American Legion and Hearst Oratorical Contests. In addition, Loyola regularly participated in the various speech activities of the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League. This year's controversial debate topic, Resolved: that Governmental subsidies should be granted -to high school graduates who qualify for additional training, was thoughtfully argued pro and con by seniors Porterfield, Cooney, Fogarty and Taylor, and by juniors jackall and Hathaway. Were we successful? Certainly the poise and confidence of individual members developed marvelously. That Loyolafs wide reputation for turning out polished speakers grew with the year is evidenced by the fact that four finalists were placed in the Voice of Democracy Contest, the League Declamation Contest was won by Ben Tresselt, the Original Oratory Contest by Nelson Cooney, and the new Knights of Columbus trophy was brought to Blakefield. Hard-driving shots like this made Ed Hargaden M.S.A. scoring champ with a 2l point average. In this year of champions at Loyola, one tends to over' look our 1956 basketball squad. But let's look at the record: thirteen wins and eight losses, second place in M.S.A. Division I, third in the newly formed Baltimorefvsfashington Catholic League, the only team to top city champions, South' ern High. All point to a highly successful campaign. Not soon will we forget Ed Hargadens driving layups and swishing sets which made him top M.S.A. scorer and allfscholastic guard. And remember Ed MUFIIQS 28 rebounds which spearheaded the spectatcular comeback from an eight- eenfpoint deficit against Calvert Hall? And Ed Wordeii's jump shot which won the return battle with john Carroll, Harwoods hooks against Forest Park, Hcaly's steady rebound' ing, the hustling attitude of the whole team? Cur congratula' tions and thanks to Mr. Hargadcn, to the senior members of the squad, and to the underclassmen who give promise of great things to come. The Student Council became a new and important power in school life . , . It inaugurated, under president joe Touhey, a challenging Spirit Cup contest between classes . . . And thus went a swift, demanding year . . . We had to work and with Senior Ratings underway in January we labored even more . . . Graduation and college began to be real daily motives . . . Our day of loyal leadership was fast approaching . . . Changes came . . . Ground was broken for an enlarged cafeteria and a new school build- ing . . . Loyola waslon the move . . . It was June-and we were talking about September. SENIOR YEAR Senior year! After three years of waiting we were the custodians of the Senior Garden, the leaders of the school . . . Our thoughts were serious and our purpose high-our goal was 'the Topl' REVEREND DAVID J. FITZGERALD, SJ. Died April 30, 1955 and examinations . A. . We got by, to cheer on the Blue and Gold to a fighting second place in basketball and a thrilling first in hockey . . . The skaters made our joy complete, adding the symbolic Harvard Cup to our collection. And now all is coming to a close . . . As we ready for publication, we have profited from two unforgetable days of retreat at Manresa . . . The call for baseball and tennis is out and promise is high . . . Richard II, the annual play, is in full production . . . Spring is in the air-and Senior Week with all its climactic events-and our careers . . . Religious life or marriage? Business or scientific? College first or the service? . . . From here our paths branch out . . . But the memory of four hard and happy years at Loyola can never wholly die . . . They will return to cheer us, to counsel us, to direct us whither all our ways will converge again. What a glorious year! Mass of the Holy Ghost before the powerful St. Ignatius statue . . . The drive to an M.S.A. championship in football gained momentum each week, became a runaway train in 32f7 victories over Mt. St. joe and Calvert Hall . . . Seniors Healy, Hargaden, Pacunas and Walsh gained state honors, first two made national polls . . . And the rallies, constant roars from the stands, delirious Monday mornings in celebration . . . lt was not all sports as, with flying colors, we passed a scholastic evaluation by the Middle States Educational Association . . . We seniors were eager to learn about the future on Career Conference Day, glad to talk over the situation with Fr. Graham, student counsellor, in company with our parents . . . The dances came regularly and we enjoyed them . . . We watched proudly as the Book of job, starring seniors Cooney, Porterlield and Potocki took first place in the Maryland Province One-Act Play contest . . .
