-..,. ,J I :rw-ffalwwwmm if b f I am the Way the Truth and the Llie. Q 9 ' 99 F 0l1'E W 0110 The days for leading men with promises are at an end. The time for leading them through appeals for heroism, sacrifice, and self-denial has begun. Thus does Bishop Fulton J. Sheen describe the year of our high school graduation. Into such a world do we enter with humble confidence, because of the training we have received during the past four years. For this we are eternally grateful to Loyola and shall cherish with pride the memory of the days spent within her walls. Here we grasped the never-changing principles of truth and goodness. Here we were fitted into the mold which makes Christian leaders. Here we obeyed that later we might be able to command. Here we learned self-restraint and shouldered responsibility. Here, most of all, we were taught to take for our Friend and Guide the greatest Leader of the ages. Here we came to better know and love and serve the One who offered the surest blueprint for living: I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. In the pages which follow are contained our grateful tribute to the school, the system and the men who have so well equipped us for happy living and successful leading in the Atomic Age. . The times in which we live require that we give special attention to the education and development of those few individuals upon whom we depend for leadership. We par- ticularly need spiritual leaders, a handful of men and women who live at the height of the Christian Gospel in all its concrete fullness. They are needed as the leaven in the mass, as lights amid the darkness, as strong cities set upon hills. Thomas E. Murray VERY REVEREND ANTHONY J. ZEITS, SJ. ' President ms l en In the short eight months since he has returned to Loyola, Rev. Anthony .l. Zeits, S..l. has won its love and respect. From the first day we were introduced to him, we knew that his formidable frame contained a kindly heart, and that in the new Rector we had gained a true friend. Loyola yearhooks of ten years ago tell us that Mr. Zeits was a teaching scholastic at Blakeficld, Moderator of Athletics, quite active and well-liked. We are happy to he the first graduating class in the rectorship of this manly priest who has shown such a devoted and unfiagging interest in every Loyola student and every Loyola activity, and who possesses those qualities of leadership and spirituality which serve as a model to each one of us. We fondly trust that he shall remember us as long as we remember him. 4 xr, C OF THE PRESIDE +2-'irimfitlisxya-.-.-Av......... . . . LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL BLAKEHELD TowsoN 4 MARYLAND June 12, 1955 Dear Graduates of Loyola: Congratulations and well done. You have been leaders in the classroom, in the field of athletics, in dramatios, in debating, in Student Publications, in all the varied activities which comprise a Jesuit education. Your leadership and example have engendered a distinguished quality in the school year 1954-1955 --- a greater and more vital school spirit. You are graduates to whom we willingly entrust the name 'Loyola Alumnus. As you leave us we begin to expand our facilities, another step to a greater Loyola. It is my hope and prayer that the greater number of students we admit in the future will possess those qualities in which, in you, we take so much pride. God bless you all during the years to come. Nay He grant you success in your life and a large measure of happiness, and may your love and devotion to Christ our Lord and His Blessed Mother deepen and grow stronger through the years. J, .V -,M JEROME E. CONNORS C1937-19555 Dm' Dick 0lll0l'll1lll Leadership requires various qualities of soul' Some leaders are gifted with profound lntellects which guide our faltering minds A flashing person ality and heart-thrilling voice enable others to sway our wills There is one type of leadership, however, which calls for qualities rare among men: leadership through suffering. Resolute determination and courage to endure the challenge of daily anguish, unflinching steadfastness before the portals of God,s tribunal - these are the credentials necessary for such leadership. All of them were present to a marked degree in the person of Jerome Connors. Quiet and unas- suming, Jerry occupied no high rank among the students usually recognized as class leaders. But as we learned of his valiant battle for life and of his Christ-like acceptance of certain death, we discerned a soul truly worthy of admiration and imitation. His example will ever serve as a shining star to guide us, to lead us. Requiescat in pace. I t has been proven that potential leaders are almost everywhere, that they will ap- pear with patience and encouragement, that their ability can be trained remarkably in experience. William W. Seeing that they would use it wisely, Fr. Blee early in the year entrusted to the members of the Council an extraordinary responsibility, jug'7. Thus they had jurisdiction over thc Recre- ation Room at lunchtime, supervised Friday Mass. and con- dueted all school assemblies, rallies, and even athletic Contests off the school premises. This confidence was fully justified by the mature and cooperative attitude of members and students alike. To keep school spirit at high tide, competition between classes was originated with the Spirit Cup contest. The hard work involved for Joe Touhey and company was repayed by an ardent added interest in studies, activities, and sports as each class strove mightily to gain their yearis Spirit Cupii. This was no ordinary year in the annuals of student gov- ernment. Let us hope that the road blazed by an energetic and generous Student Council will be followed in future years to the benefit of Loyola and its student body. A M is f ZW X points for the Spirit Cup Contest. Moderator Fr. Blee and president ,loe Touhey look over the program for the Tal- ent Show, sponsored by the Council. For the first time the presidents of the activities joined with the class presidents as mtembers of the Student Council. Here, Bill Clautice, president of the Boosters. discusses plans for a forthcoming Project Contest. Teach me to serve Thee as Thou deservestg to give and not to count the costg to fight The Sodality is a resounding challenge to anyone. A generous heart must prompt the high school boy who accepts it. This centuries-old corps calls for a tre- mendous amount of work and sacrifice, of patience and fidelity. Not merely another extracurricular activity, this enlistment leads to a life-long consecration to Our Lady, calling for a special way of life according to set rules, demanding a full manly devotion to the Mother of God. The Junior Sodality tests the young high school student who has expressed his desire to become a Sodal- ist, and he in turn tests the Sodality to see if he can handle its requirements. Cenerosity will be constantly drawn on as desire becomes act. He learns to perform faithfully the spiritual duties, and to live the rules. W'hen fully aware of the responsibilities of the Sodalist, he makes final acceptance of the challenge by his act of consecration to our Lady. Under the spirited and critical supervision of Mr. Jaster, S.J. these freshmen and sopho- more debaters worked hard to gain the poise and self-confidence needed to become polished public speakers. They argued timely topics at the regular Tuesday afternoon meetings and climaxed their season with the Junior Prize Debate. Moreover, their participation in the Optim- ist Club Oratorical Contest throughout the city brought experience and renown to themselves and continual praise to their school. The Junior Oratorical Contest before the assembled student body was a cause of admiration and inspiration to many students. Ah Just as every real home is what it is because of the love and devotion of a mother, so too is Loyola a greater school because'the mothers of its students have grouped themselves into a Mothers, Club. With Father David J. Fitzgerald, SJ., as Moder- ator and Mrs. George F. Derr, as President, the Board of Directors launched a new and prosperous year with an Open House at Blakefield for the Freshman Mothers. This occasion was a warm and informative introduction to Loyola High School. Father and Son Day, the Christmas Party and the Hobby Show were outstanding events which achieved their twofold purpose: close cooperation was assured by Parent-Teacher interviews before these entertaining events, and an enjoyable social get-together always closed the program. Mention must not be omitted of thc Mothers' Club's preoccupation with the spiritual, as testified to by the Day of Reeollection at Loyola College in january with Fr. Williani Driscoll, SJ., as Retreat Master, and the Annual Communion Breakfast in May. Highlight of the year was the 19111 Annual Easter Monday Party and Dance. The Scholarship Fund as well as the Improvement Fund was en- hanccd even more than usual this year because of the generous response of the hard-working com- mittees and the enthusiasm of so many Loyola parents. From the drawing up of this year's Mothers' Club Directory in September to the last edition of the new and attractive Bulletin in May, our Mothers were working at school, as well as at home, for a year of successful growth for us. Varsity Hockey Loyola's fighting ice hockey team forced undefeated Forest Park to go all out to gain a 4-2 victory in the Harvard Cup Playoff this year. The Dons thus ended their season with an overall record of three victories and six defeats, downing Mt. St. Joe twice, and taking a spectacular 4-3 game from Poly in the last minute of the regular season. Unimpressive at first glance, this record tells the story of an inexperienced young team growing under the heat of that driving spirit characteristic of Loyola. The team had but two returning regulars, smooth- skating center Bill Bagliani and solid defenseman ,lack Kahl. But next season presents a much more promising picture, for the only graduates will he Bagliani, and a pair of capable second linemcn, Bill Clautice and Gus Evans. Thus Kahl will lie surrounded by hard-fighting and experienced team-mates - goalie ,lay Piomhino, defenseman Gene Petty, wings Ray Rossi and Bill Heaphy, and center Mike Spigelmire, plus many seasoned varsity sulms and jayvee players. The experi- ence gleaned during the past season under the skilled hands of Mr. Lilley and Mr. Hackett, added to the spirit the team always had, promises a full harvest next year. 9 Sf. 522 0.1! 1 '1 - -I o 91 7 It n I Kahl and Petty bottle up Forest Park I The Dons bid for a score, as Clautwe and Rossi break through. 1. 9- A. f 'F' .753-f -vi Q - , -.
