Dix. i No one thought that the '86 Cubs would finish with a 9-3 record, it just wasn't supposed to happen. The Cubs were not extremely talented, they lacked size, and were returning only six starters, but they had the desire to win. After a 42-13 win over St. Paul, people began to take notice of the Cubs. That victory began a six game winning in which the Cubs beat Santa Monica and Antelope Valley. However the streak was snapped when the Cubs lost to Crespi, the C.I.F. champions, and St. Iohn Bosco, the C.I.F. runnerup. From there, the Cubs finished the regular season with victories over St. Francis and Notre Dame, and advanced to the ClF playoffs. In the first round, the Cubs beat Marina 7-O and moved onto the second round at C.l.F., a feat not accomplished since 1983. Unfortunately, the Cubs lost a hard fought battle vs Fontana, 17-14, and were eliminated from the playoffs. This year's team was characterized by Commitment, desire, and determination, all of which were shown in their hard work on the field and in the weightroom. The Cubs infamous Wolfpack defense was lead by seniors David Matter, Anthony Holly, Chris Rising, and Sean Doheny. This incredible defense allowed only an average of eight points per game. The offense, which scored an average of 22 points a game, was lead by George Paton, lohn Winnek, Iames Roughan, Marco Torres, Milan Ratkovich, Tim McGinity, Tony Porrata, and Mike Pernecky. Although the Cubs were plagued by injuries, they had a superb season that was only blemished by losses to three championship teams by a combined total of only 11 points.
