The 1985 season began with great expectations, and the '85 Cub gridders did not disappoint. This year's team was far from being the biggest team in the league. However, what the Cubs lacked in size, they more than made up for in hard work. The offense, led by seniors Steve Carroll, Todd Martin, Matt Pascale, Pat Muldoon, Tom Kelley, Dan O'Neil, and Mark Estwick, baffled defenses all year long. The defense, anchored by seniors Bernard Brown, Justin Gmelich, Tim Stoutt, Matt Girardi, Travis Foss, Pat McCarty, Pierre Bourgeix, Pat Doud, and Steve Balsarini, consistently stopped opposing offenses. After a shocking loss to St. Paul, the Cubs went on a seven game winning streak including impressive wins over Santa Monica, St. John Bosco, St. Francis, and culminated with an impressive win over Notre Dame,to clinch the 1985 Del Rey League championship. In CIF playoff action, the Cubs lost a hard fought battle to a powerful Fontana team, finishing their season with an 8-3 record. The 1985 season was a very rewarding experience for all people involved. Thank you for your support. Coming off a tremendous summer, which was highlighted by a 9th l place finish in the prestigious Punahua Invitational Water Polo Tournament, the Cubs went on to be part of history at Loyola High School. Under the leadership of 2nd year head coach Ed Profumo, the Cubs captured a second straight Del Rey League title. The Cubs swam through their Del Rey League opponents, earning a 10-O record which qualified them for a 5th straight CIF bid. This was the first time in Loyola's history that such a record was achieved in Water Polo. This record did not come easy, the Cubs had to beat each Del Rey League opponent twice. The games with long time rival St. John Bosco proved to be the most difficult. The Cubs met the Bosco Braves once at home and once away adding two more ticks in the win column by defeating the Braves 12-10 and 6-5 respectively. At the end of league action, the Cubs geared up for CIF action. The Cubs advanced to the third round of CIF, another historic event for Loyola High Water Polo. The cubs achieved this mark by defeating Redondo 11-7 in the first round, and Muir 9-8 in the second round. Then, in the third round, the Cubs met top-ranked El Dorado. The final out- come proved to be a repeat of last years game, the Cubs lost 6-12. Although this was a crushing defeat, it rewrote the Loyola High School Water Polo history books. For the second straight year, the entire starting team received league honors. Seniors Matt Holscher, Tim O'Donnell, Ed Prado and Andrew Sutton received 1st team league selections. Matt Holscheer also received league MVP and a 2nd team CIF selec- tion while Ed Prado and Tim O'Donnell received a CIF honorale mention. Other honors included Second team league selections, Nick Wooler, Ed Detels and Joe Rasic while junior David O'Keefe received league honorable mention. Outstanding play was also recorded by Seniors Chris Regan and Michael Braun. On a final note the Water Polo team would like to thank all the students and faculty who came out and supported us throughout our season. Aloha! In the past, basketball at Loyola was not too popular, but that all changed this year. Head coach Bill Thomason, and assistant coach Ed Samaniego, S.J., scratched the old offense, and installed a new and exciting fast-break, run and gun , type offense, which would better serve the talent on the team. Led by Mark Tilson lco-captain and 1st Team Del Rey League Selectionl, Mark Caveness and Mike Boken lboth co-captains and 2nd Team Del Rey League Selectionsl the Cubs enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in recent history. After months of grueling practices, and a retreat that unified the team even more, they were ready for the quest. The preseason, which included three tournaments, proved to be a learning experience for all, a preparation period for league play, and also a time to implement new plays and strageties. During the presea' son, the Cubs defeated Centennial, Leuzinger and our own basketball Alumni to finish with a promising 5-6 record. The Cubs dedicated themselves to making the playoffs, and winning the league. Like many other seasons, it had its share of exciting wins, and heart-felt loses. Some of these included the come from behind victories over St. Francis at home and away, the thrilling last second shot to defeat St. John Bosco away, and the total domination of both Notre Dame and Bosco Tech. Unlike many other seasons in the past, the Cubs had a winning record. In fact, their 7-5 league record was good enough to earn them 2nd place in the Del Rey League, and more importantly a playoff birth. In the playoffs, the first showing of Loyola basketball in three years, the Cubs travelled to Downey to play Pius X. This journey proved to be too far, as the Cubs were downed 105-90, in front of an incredibly packed gym. The fans at the game were not only treated to a very high scoring game, but also to the dedication and drive that the team exhibited throughout the entire season. On behalf of the coaches, players, and managers, I would like to thank our families, the cheerleaders, our friends, and the faculty for their support throughout the entire year. These are the moments Window- panes and Eclipse endeavored to encourage and nurture this year - a break from struc- tured classes, assignments and everyday, systematic lifestyles. Eclipse presented stories, poems and artwork from what could be perceived as the dark side of the imagination. Windowpanes, like its name, provided a view of both the mind of the writer and the world they want- ed to portray. The team's goal this year is to use a Del Rey League win as a stepping stone to a possible CIF title, and send a squad representing Loyola to the state finals. With such a talented array of athletes, all of this is within the team's grasp. Returning to lead the sprinters under coach Jon Dawson will be veteran Mark Estwick. Eddie McElroy, Mike Seley, and Pat Orr will provide a strong triple threat in the hurdles under coach Al Sanford. Dominat- ing the middle distance, coached by Glen Harvey, and the long distance, coached by Jack Gallagher, will be Mike McCracken, Joe Brink, Wayne Nitti, and Mitch Sloan. All four were members of the 1985 CIF championship team. High jumper Mark Tilson, coached by Victor Sisnett, long and triple jumpers Rob Cuilty and Jon Scott, coached by Victor Harewood, shot putters Andy Rogers and Ron Higgins, and pole vaulters Andy Knickerson and Nick Gentry, under coach Fernando Hernandez, will ensure the Cubs of many final victories. The dedication of the very fine coaching staff and atheltes will give Loyola another team to be proud of. Tom Foster SPRING SPORTS SPRING SPORTS QW wh W - wx . This year's team will be lead by All- Americans Mike Fitzpatrick, John Hsu, and Bob Childs. The team's success will also be resting upon seniors Merrick Walters, Nick Wooler, Ed Prado, and junior Dave O'Keefe. Last year's squad lost the CIF 3A championships by a mere two and one half points. With a well- balanced crew the Cubs should swing their way to the prestigious Del Rey League title and be contenders for the CIF championship which has eluded the squad for so many years. ,,,, SPRING SPORTS I TRAMURALS Under the direction of Coordinator Mark Caveness and Mr. Dave Arnold, the intramu- ral program of 1985-1986 was very orga- nized and successful. Its diversity of sports gave all students an ample opportunity to participate in lunchtime competition. Liam All is Well Callanan -From the abyss of the Under- classmen Editor rose our Editor- in-Chief. Not only is he a fine hula dancer, but Liam has managed to navigate the waters of producing a fine publication each month. From DefCon 5 to DefCon 1, he has remained calm atop his desk. A man noted for his computer innovations for the Loyalist fi.e. typos, higher expensesj, Liam has proudly worn his crown during the Loyalisfs 1985-86 school year. His wit will surely be remembered, his editorials treasured, and his typos overlooked. Liam will probably be editor of a major Petaluma publication. Robert Tears in my Eyes Mansour -As Associate Editor of Design, he was mainly responsi- ble for the look of the paper. How- ever, he also held responsibities for the Feature Section. Pager was chiefly responsible for the assembly lirie and was always there to race to the Printer. As initiator of the Loy- alist Baseball Game, John has also produced several fine News Sec- tions. He was always there till the end, although the end always seemed to get there first. Pager will certainbf be a legend in the Loyalist Hall of Fame. John plans to open his own Music Plus chain in the near future. Tim Award-Winning-lssuei' Byrne -Certainly one of the Loy- alists true pioneers, Tim came up with great ideas and expressed sin- cere enthusiasm for the Loyalist. From Trends to Teenage Pres- sures to guest writers, Tim has pro- vided the newspaper with fresh ideas time after time. His typeset material, however, did not always arrive on time. Tim would occasion- ally threaten to leave the stafi real- izing that he had received. the curse of the News Editor-a job he handled with guts and glory. Tim will be principal of an all-girls school where he shall also teach journalism. Billy Hey, Babe Birney - Also one of the Loyalists pioneers, Billy often worked with Tim to create ideas and suggestions for the Loyalist . Billy also had some famous quotes like i'Hey, Babe, take a look at this and, of course, the one he saved for Deadline Day, Hey, Babe, I gotta go! As News- feature Editor, Billy set some standards and upset some old stan- dards. Who can forget such great like Searching for Santa ? CPlease hold your remarks to yourselvesj. Billy hopes to be a Creative Consul- tant for an accounting nrm. Thanks, Babe . . . John How Many Pages do I Get? Campisi -John revolution- ized the Sports Section, giving it a whole new look. Insisting on quality photos, John likewise gave his pages that Campisi-quality look. The Sports Quote Book'l was a favorite with readers. He also provided read- ers with articles that did not directly deal with a certain sport. Always on time, John was very reliable. Along with great headline like 'And Now They Know How It Feels , John also had famous quotes like Turn that damn radio down! John will own his own football team after, of course, selecting a few fine cheerleaders. Obviously, these six could not have done it all without the fine sup- porting cast. Merit goes to George Hawley , Photo Editor, for his exceptional photography. George is one of the main reasons the paper looked as good as it did. Always there till the end, George should have his pictures framed, if we ever get them. Also, credit goes to William Salvini , Copy Editor. Without Will, much of the print seen would have never been. Along with excellent articles and News Briefs, William proved himself a valuable asset. Applause for Joe Montes for his dedicated work as Business Manager. Farmer John has offered to be Postmaster General, claiming he loves the taste of stamps. Also, special merit should go to our underclassmen staff Our MVM Award CMost Valuable Modemj goes to Billy Tieman , Under- classmen Editor. Billy is a true classic, and is distined to play a major role with the Loyalist upon his return from Argentina. Billy hopes to be like Liam, Robert, and John Page when he grows up Cwhen- ever that may bel. Also, John Hus- ton was one ofthe integral figures in production. As Production Man- ager, John was always there direct- ing novices and aiding veterans in producing the paper: Expect to see more of this man in future issues. Also, we would like to thank Cory Bowman for his great assistance with computer frontier. He likes to be called the Fastest Fingers in the West. Robert Orozco also deserves credit for his constant involvement with the Loyalist. Rob will surely be a Loyola Literary leader. Also, thanks to Rhett Brown and Steve Guttman for their constant help. I would like to suggest something that we think of less often as extraordinarily valuable and crucial: our potential, what we can be, what we can become. Our potential is what makes us dare to dream, those aspects of ourselves which we know only vaguely and hope to make real. We hold our potential, like seeds, seeds which will need time and care to be realized. And our potential is not of our own making. It is a gift from God. . . . I am well aware that there are voices which call us to change, but not necessarily to grow. Not all change is growth, just as not all movement is forward. . . . How often people, even the most gifted and willing, are suck- ered in by the illusions of the hawkers of fake happiness, bringing upon themselves a tragically forced allegiance to twisted values. They want acceptance and get laughed at, they want riches and get lonliness, they want power and get insecurity, they want ecstasy from alcohol and drugs and get misery, they want freedom and get another form of paranoid slavery, they want love and get used. , . . Live a life worthy of your calling. I am not talking about being perfect. I have no such desires or expectations on any of us. I am talking about, however, being committed to your own growth, touch- ing your own potential, letting the seed flower. MINISTRY -oyola High School is about growth: growth in learning, first of ill, as the only thing worse than ignorance is to choose to be gnorant. The school is about growth and friendship as we- be- ieve, with St. Paul that none of us lives for himself and none of us' lies for himself. And Loyola High School is about growth in the Spirit of Jesus Christ as we believe that the greatest love a person :an have is to lay down his life for his friends. all living things grow. To grow means to live. That which doesn,t grow is dead, even though it may still breatheg and there is iothing sadder than things which die before their time. , . . Unity and peace are the signs of growth. Unity which could Je called exterior peace and which shows itself in acceptance of all, respect and reverance for all, in fearlessness and in openness :o the future. , , . Peace allows us to welcome others into our lives because we accept ourselves, not as finished but as growing. . , . It is not worthy of you to waste your potential as some do because they are too lazy to become involved in anything, or do nothing because you're too afraid you might fail. , . , Whatever happens . . . will be the result of precisely what we choose to do - the kind of soil we choose to be - how committed we all are to grow. , , . And it is just plain stupid to believe that any victory, any success, any achievement comes without cost. -Gordon D. Bennett, S.J. September 13, 1985 CHRISTIAN i LIFE COMMUNITIES To encourage spiritual growth and a sense of social well-being, the Chris- tian Life Communities strive to es- tablish very informal settings and gatherings as a vehicle to stimulate discussions on pertinent moral and social issues. Emphasis is placed on increasing and magnifying a sense of fellowship among students by offer- ing opportunities to gather for litur- gies or chances to eat away from campus to gain a feeling of indepen- dence and closeness. Finally, CLC members unite to participate in just about any activity, any function, or any outing as a method of strength- ening goals and desires, and high- lighting the sense of living and par- ticipation in a Christian tradition lifestyle, and community. a 127 CHRISTIAN ACTIGN MOVEMEQN 1 Members of the 1985-1986 CAM Executive Council were: Angel Vallejo, Larry Lemos, Michael Wilson, John Malburg, Bill Birney and many others - thanks so much for a wonderful year! The Christian Action Movement is about this ambition and development. CAM is a stronghold and foundation that seeks to draw all members of the student body together, to work together, to participate together, to come as a community together for the betterment of those who are less fortunate. CAM gives one the opportunity and incentive, through many fund-raising and gift-giving drives, as well as through occasional trips to a few of the many orphan- ages in Mexico, to experience the personal satisfaction and pathos that giving of oneself evokes and makes genuine. SENIOR PRGJECT: I1 Q The underlying philosophy of the Senior Project has been one of personal enlightenment and gratification since its initial beginning six years ago. Each senior, after choosing a placement which facilitates his needs, goals, and interests, volunteers approximately six hours each day for a period of three weeks, Through such an experience, seniors hope to gain a much greater insight, or perception, into their own lives by interacting and growing to be an integral part of the lives of others, to work and find their own capacities for service without mention or reward, to feel the need of needing others, and to attain the ability to love and feel attachment, by fostering love and attention to others. Gordon Bennett, S.J., truly captured in words the ideology of the Senior Project, when he states, lt is not only about serving, but it ls about being served. Six times during the course of the school year, under the guidance of Fr. Kevin Leidich, S.J., Loyola's Campus Ministry program offers senior students the opportunity to make a directed retreat - a two day reflective experience designed to help a student take an honest look at his life, to know more clearly how he stands before himself and before his God, and to provide him with some of the tools for the further nurturing of his interior life. The emphasis during the directed retreat is on each student as an individual. Priority is also placed upon time spent in personal conferences with one's retreat director and in private reflection. At the close of the two-day period, the retreatment should desire to communicate more closely with a God who loves him personally, and realize the reign of God within himself. , -v ,Qi I I ll lUNlI'UIlQS x. The people-everyone from the teachers, to the students, to the maintainance crew. Everyone always seems to be able to take an extra second and help out, no matter what the situation is. Without the people, Loyola would be no different that any other school fexcept for a blue trackl. - Dan Wilson Of course clean bathrooms made most of my time at Loyola memorable, but I think it's just the atmosphere at Loyola that will stick in my mind. l've never seen a school before that would let the seniors get away with so much and so little at the same time. - Kevin Kohler lt has to be my friends. Their personalities helped me to shape my personality. We learned about trust from each other. The good things and the bad things we did helped me to decide what I wanted in my life. - John Page Probably the incredible opportunities l had to express myself creatively. With all of the various publications, as well as the opportunity presented with pep rallies, etc. I think there were many chances for me to develop one of my talents. - Steve Balsarini Activities, especially athletics, made Loyola personal. Loyola offers opportunities for growth, however, only taking advantage of these activities provides growth. It was real and fun, but not whatever - Hector Villagra Teachers- The good rapport between my teachers and myself helped place me where l am now- more knowledgable, more mature, and more understanding. - George Hawley I really feel that it is the community aspect of Loyola that has made this school so special. Students, teachers, secretaries, and security guards alike are all approachable as friends. This element is really unique to Loyola and allows us to form the strong friendships that we have with so many people. - Pete Nyquist WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT THAT OCCURRED AT LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR? August the clogger Dougherty's chimpanzee mating calls. - Jack Henry The fall sports sweep of the Del Rey League stand out above all. It brought much needed excellence back to our sports program. We need to excell in sports even further. Success in sports keeps a strong community. - Bill Lee My most memorable event this year was not really an event. lt was my Christian yoga class. Through this class, I became more in touch with myself. Few people understand what it means to find yourself, but I really feel l have begun to do so, - Steve Charbonnet The flop of the afterschool pep rally. - Alfredo Botello Getting the last of my college applications done. I finished my last one on February 1 and had it in the post office five minutes before closing time. I - Hector Villagra The Senior Project. lt gave me the chance to do something l always wanted to do. - Frank Morrow The St. Francis football game. It was their homecoming, but the Loyola fans were more vocal and excited than theirs fband on the track, etc.l. -Steve Balsarini lt's a number of experiences that make a school year unforgetable. I couldn't exactly pinpoint one event, but I was relieved when all my applications were done. l also enjoyed being a show-off at football and basketball games. - Bryan Gayer The long vacation we got during Christmas and the Senior Project. - Bobby Martinez Watching a horse named Blue Is Beautiful owned by our very own Dean of Men come out of nowhere to finish second, allowing a couple of friends and a Physics teacher to become independantly wealthy. - Pete Nyquist Without a doubt, the most important aspect has been the chance to meet, come to know, and grow with people from different areas and backgrounds and, through time, realize that all people share common goals and dreams. - Christopher Cheleden FCUR YEARSg A PICTGRIAL REVIEW yd' -, we E 1' 'gan A 7 . Besides all our friends are here, Don Henley 157 -. 3 ii! f:'4'f' ' ,'i , - . War is an image that dominated 1983-1985. ln the war-torn region of Beirut, violence and fighting continually erupted between Lebanese PLO forces and Israeli troops. ln one instance, 253 American troops were killed by a terrorist bombing of the U.S. embassy. A small Caribbean island called Grenada became the target of a lightning quick U.S. military raid to wipe out communist bases stationed there, Fighting in Central America continued between the U.S. backed Contras and the Sandanista regime. Finally, Americans applauded as Sally Ride travelled aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger into orbit, becoming the first female to venture into space. HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS A PERSON FIFTEEN YEARS FROM NOW? I see myself as a complex, multidimensional person. By then I hope to be a successful lawyer with my own firm as well as a partstime freelance writer. Of course, I'll also be spending many days journeying to Vegas Ion business, of coursel and at the track. In fact, by then l'll surely own a horse or two and maybe even my own stable. Then one day I'll meet a stable girl, fall madly in love, and get married. - John Cziszar Ideally, I'd like to be married and working at Lucasflim out of my suburban, Northern California home. I will be an artist, responsible for designing, drafting, and sculpting the multi-legged, forty-eyed creatures which populate future Star Wars films. - John Brosio Unwed, underfed, unemployed . and loving it. - Jack Henry I'm really looking forward to having a couple babies, and then going back to the reservation and becoming one with the earth and my people. - Dan Wilson After becoming the single richest human being ever to walk the face of the earth, I plan to buy Germany for use as a summer home, and Lichenstein for use as a guest room. Robin Leach will have a weekly special called The Lifestyle of Kev. I will have a worldwide TV show called Kev, which will be on every weeknight. It will be a fun-filled hour of viewing pleasure in which I will talk about me. Every Saturday the Kev Weekend Special will come on. This will be a fun-filled hour of viewing pleasure in which famous people will talk about, and praise me. - Kevin the Kev Kohler I don't know where I'Il be fifteen years from now, but give me 20 or 25, and I picture myself behind this big desk in a large oval-shaped room. -John Malburg In fifteen years, I would hope that I could be working for my own industrial psychology consulting company. This would involve counseling in stress management and job satisfaction. I would hope that the experiences of the fifteen years will have changed my perceptions as much as four years at Loyola has. - Christopher Cheleden HOW DO YOU SEE U.S.-U.S.S.R. RELATIONS CHANGING OVER THE NEXT 10-15 YEARS? IS A CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE TWO SUPER POWERS INEVITABLE OR JUST A POSSI- BILITY? In the future, I see U.S.-Soviet relations improving to a point of mutual acceptance, if not mutual friendship. I don't think, however, that the Soviet system of government will radically change. I don't foresee a confrontation between the two super powers, but both sides should take every measure to avoid one. - Steve Balsarini I believe that the U.S. will conquer and totally squash the USSR, and will finally have total and complete domination of the world, just as God intended. - Matt Romano WHY can't we both be equally powerful? I pray that war will never happen. If conventional warfare isn't implemented, the only other option is total annihilation. We have to reduce arms. We have to compromise. We can't be so greedy. - Alfredo Botello A possible confrontation is a contradiction of terms - there will never be such a confrontation, at least involving the two super powers. As Goepel would say, the Soviets aren't stupid, and neither are we. But I do see some major conflicts with lesser powers in the Middle East, etc. - but no super power confrontation. -John Cziszar I really see the possibility of peace between the US and the USSR. Right now the two nations are beginning to agree on little things like cultural exchanges, and I think that it will grow into larger things, like nuclear disarmament. - Dan Wilson I feel that over the next few years, great advancements in relations will occur between the two super powers. As long as we can vote candidates into office who are willing to be stern yet know when to compromise, the relations between the US and USSR will become much warmer. - Steve Charbonnet Our working relationship with the Soviets will continue to gradually inprove, but our policies will never be in perfect harmony. Both nations will eventually realize the futility of nuclear parity, and the worst threat to civilization will become obselete through disarmament. Minor conflicts over such international hot spots as Central America or the Middle East are possible between the two super powers, but no world-ending confrontations will arise I hope. - Pete Nyquist 159 Eugene E. I think that if something is not done to reduce the deficit, we're headed for serious problems- possibly even a depression. Raising taxes is, most likely, inevitable. - John Malburg I believe that the U.S. economy will most likely improve tremendously within the next 15 years, providing us the opportunity to establish our own financial security. I furthermore believe that our huge deficit is a sovable problem which will most likely be eradicated by the time we begin our own careers. - Steve Balsarini I'm going to be incredibly rich and famous and pay off the federal deficit myself. - Dan Wilson The economy will go into another minor recession for a couple of years as a result of budget difficulties. Until a grip on government spending is attained Iboth on defense and domesticallyl, we are in for tough times. However, the economy will eventually rebound to a flourishing level that will allow all of us to gain financial prosperity. - Pete Nyquist North, - Kevin Kohler I think that it really depends on what kind of leadership we get over the next fifteen years. I would like to see the economy grow by stressing internal, domestic reform instead of pumping millions of dollars into foreign governments. Although the deficit is a somewhat hazy issue, I think it can be overcome with the proper management, and I hope to see it done even in my time. - Steve Charbonnett The federal deficit will most likely continue to fall by the billions in the next fifteen years. Our economy won't be destroyed, but it will have its fair share of problems. - Bryan Gayer Fifteen years from now, we will have two recessions like the 1981-82 one, with about that much impact. No deep recession will occur though. Just a slip up. The deficit won't cause the catastrophic problems everybody thinks will happen. - George Hawley FINALLY, IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT YOU COULD WISH FOR IN THE FUTURE WHAT WOULD IT BE? THIS CAN BE ANYTHING THAT YOU HOPE OR STRIVE FOR, OR AN IDEAL THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE FULFILLED. I would wish that the Class of '86 leaves a lasting mark on Loyola, that we're all happy in whatever we do, and most importantly that we don't lose touch with each other. Though the world these days is fast-paced, high tech, and long distance, there's never an excuse for forgetting your friends. My friends have meant the world to me over these past four years, and letting them drift away after graduation would be the biggest mistake of my life. - John Cziszar I would hope that someday people Imyself includedl would be broad enough of scope to take the time to get to know others beyond the first impression before they label them as 'sf' - Kevin Kohler I want to see this generation of young people make a positive impact on society. I want all of us to set good examples for the next generation. - John Page I hope that we never have to worry about having money, food, a place to stay. If I had a second wish, it would be that world governments would leave each other alone. - Bobby Martinez My one wish for myself as well as all my friends is that we all live up to our full potential as people. Each one of us has so much to offer, I only hope that we don't let our abilities and talents go to waste because of laziness or contentment with what we already have. Let's always strive to make ourselves better. - Pete Nyquist I guess I hope that l'll stay in touch with the friends I've made here. Even though we're all heading in different directions, we're still going to be friends. - Dan Wilson John F. Kennedy called it a real Peace, Richard Nixon called it a peace with healing in its wings. I hope we can Iand I know we mustl make these profound dreams our unwavering goals. With this peace comes freedom, and as Sen. Paul Laxalt said, My independant Basque soul yearns to breathe free! - John Malburg 172 A FEW REFLECTIONS ON TI-IE CLASS OF '86 Fr. Gordon Bennett, S.J. I will remember the Class of '86 for its unusual success, academically, athletically, personally. They were and are a group of especially close people, drawn even closer because of the many experiences shared. I will remember the Class of '86 as a humble class, one which took its accomplishments in good measure no matter how significant, even unprecedented, those accomplishments were. That humility extended even to those tense moments when sterner responses were re- quired. This group took its medicine well. Mostly, I will remember the Class of '86 as a class that was brought together through suf- fering and loss and pain. This class, more than any other in my experience, realized the pre- ciousness of human life and its fragility. They realized the importance of friendship. My deep and abiding prayer for this class is that the life each has been given by the Lord, special and unique as it is, may be lived health- ily, strongly and worthily - maybe even no- bly. The Class of '86 I will remember with deep affection. I ii- Mr. Tom Gallagher I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to get to know the Class of 1986. As a group, you are at times extremely serious, yet within a moment, you can shift to a wonderful sense of humor. With this humor, you have consis- tently brightened my days. I have found you to be confident without arrogance, open, and sensitive to the feelings of others. You have demonstrated a genuine caring for those less fortunate, and you exude kindness and accep- tance. I will miss the morning visits, which have started my day, and your agility, which have kept the injuries outside of my door at the 2:30 bell, to a minimum. In short, I will miss these many qualities that this class has in abundance, which have enriched my life. ' 'r fix' Mrs. Pat Salvaty Over the past year the Class of '86 has im- pressed me with their warmth, creativity and enthusiasm. A genuine caring and concern for others has been demonstrated time and time again. An individual and Loyola pride is evi- dent in the academic atmosphere and total excellence of the Senior Class - this, howev- er, has not eliminated or curbed a general wackiness and zest for life. It is awesome to see so many diverse personalities sharing the same goals and objectives-creating the place and the spirit which is LOYOLA. Mr. Ed Hearn When looking back over the last four years at the class of '86, it occurs to me that this class has great balance and great involvement throughout the entire school. It will be a long time before the memories such as Dan O'Neil throwing a touchdown pass, Mike McCracken leading the Cross-Country team to its second straight C.l.F. Championship, Mark Tilson get- ting a stuff off a fast break, Tim O'Donnell blocking a shot in the shallow end of St. John Bosco's pool to preserve a Water Polo League Championship, Eddie McElroy domi- nating the hurdles as Loyola pounds another opponent, and Parker Blackman giving a per- fect set to Tom Parr who puts it away for a highly probable second straight C.l.F. Volley- ball Championship begin to fade. While the class of '86 has led and achieved athletically, it has also done so on many other fronts. How can one ever forget John Brosio drawing for the Loyalist and his performances in Blackboard Jungle, Colin Lynch as lead- er of the greatest rallies this school has had since Father Bennett, S.J. was a student, or Phil Baker's three time failure at winning Stu- dent Body President and ending up doing the joke of the day during announcements? It has been a tremendous four years. One can't begin to recap the many memories. While I'm very proud of your accomplish- ments, I am more impressed by your heart and your love for one another. Mr. Jack Gallagher The Class of '86. My freshman year as well, when we both arrived at Loyola High School. Apprehensive, waiting to prove to Loyola that they made the correct choice. I remember vaguely our first year. Everyone trying to sur- vive and impress. For me, Admissions was a new experience, as I began to get a look at what type of student Loyola wants and at- tracts. Your freshman class proved to be one of the best Father Bennett has selected. Just look at all your achievements academically and athletically, You were always competitive, ready to play whenever you stepped on a field, put your best effort forth which usually proved to be way above average. More importantly, after all the classes and competitions, I discovered some very good people. You are trusting, caring, sensitive, and understanding. Your graduation will be very tough on me. I wouldn't mind accepting a diploma and fol- lowing you right on to your best years ahead. But we'll keep in touch. Don't forget Loyola, because Loyola cannot forget the Class of '86. Good Luck. I 1 Ms. Donna Maree Wanland Very dear Mellow Ones, I'm writing this early in March, and in compos- ing what I want to say to you, I'm experienc- ing the first wave of separation from a group of people I enjoy very much. Every year I go through a form of this gentle agony, so one would think after thirty years I'd get used to it. I don't. And every once in a while one gets a class like this one and the seperation is even harder. I have a lot of real feeling invested in you guys. Your class has known a lot of pain. I've cried with you as a group when death passed too close and I've shared the tears of individuals among you when far too much suffering en- tered your young lives. Never has that been anything but a privilege to bear with you and I've marvelled at your strength, your faith and your boundless trust. In Hebrew thought, sharing salt together marks a friendship. There is much salt in tears and there are many such friends in this class. You are also the funniest group of people passing through 402 for a long time. You have a devastating wit far beyond your years and you have caused me to lose it many times in your presence. I have literally collapsed at a quick one liner shot from some fast mouth in the back of the room. I have taught you, I have counseled you, I have directed you, I have prayed with you, I have argued with you, and I have talked with you for hours on end. And in all of this, Dear Ones, you have enclosed me in your gentle goodness. You are a warm and wonderful mellow class and yet you are so sharp, so very, very bright. The world is getting such a rich gift in you. I know that gift, I have re- ceived it from you already. I love you my friends, and I am very proud of what you are becoming. You are extremely dear to me and I will miss you because you have carved your names upon my heart. May you day by day grow in the confidence of God's pure positivity within you. ,J E 5 Mr. Victor Hedges It is truly an honor you bestow upon me by asking me to write my thoughts on the charac- ter of the Class of '86, I say with all honesty that this is the first class in my three years here which has shown me respect, support, not to mention tolerance for my somewhat volatile nature. As it is said in Proverbs 22:1- A good name is more desir- able than great riches, to be esteemed is bet- ter than silver or gold. In the past three years we have both grown up together, going through times of conflict as well as times of peace. I really believe that it is in those times of conflict that we come face to face with our weaknesses. Hopefully, we grow and become more mature, become more in control of our emotions, and grow to be the men that God intended us to be. I feel this spirit is present in the Class of '86. You are the true gifts of friendship. May the gifts that have blessed the past be with you in the fu- ture. Good luck Class of '86. ti . xx Mr. Daryl McAllister When I arrived here at Loyola, you were just mere freshmen. It has been an amazing three years. You are now the ultimate Senior class.
