Loyola draws us from Pasadena to Playa Del Rey, from Malibu to Monte- bello. It is in this community that we spend four years of our lives. As we entered Loyola we were alone in a new environ- ment unsure of our futures. Loyola allowed our friendships to grow and gave us the 'oppor- tunity to expand our talents and ourselves. As we leave Loyola we take with us the many friendships we have developed and a deep love for our school. This community of Loyola is like a pride of lions, united and strong. v lf, ei Jr mfg Xvk 3 ,J 5 RESPECT A , 'V' ' 1 , Q , G1 5? 11 X R' ifxfw r WEE if 1 Y. Missing: Mrs. Lou Ann Berardi, Moderator. Windowpanes, Loyola's literary magazine, experienced a renaissance this year as two extra mini-editions were produced, followed by a widely- acclaimed larger magazine. Since 1965 Windowpanes has existed as an open forum for students and teachers to present original poetry, prose, and picture. More importantly, though, it gives the entire Loyola community the opportunity to look outside the brick walls of our campus and experience the hope, pathos, and joy poetry can create. Such a chance to feel through words makes us essentially human, for a world where closed minds and dullness reigns, as Alexander Pope demonstrated in The Dunciazi would be truly dark: Light dies before thy uncreating word: Thy hand, great Anarch! lets the curtain fall,' and Universal Darkness buries All. l Some of Loyola's artists and consistent contributors for Windowpanes are, from left to right: Raymond Consing, Jung Park, Jim Salz, William Salvini, John Carlstroem, Ben Sullivan, Ronald Ceballos, and Gabe Garnboa. Missing: Tony Lawton, George Garcia, and F.K. the iftngaliat Volume 58 Yearbook Issue June 1985 Ten Deadlines Setg Ten Deadlines Met 1984-1985:A Year oi Controversy and Confidence The 1984-85 Loyalist will always be re- membered as a paper of superior quality that was unafraid to explore relevent, often-con- troversial issues within and outside the Loyola community. Under the leadership of Paul Balson, Editor-in-Chief, and Neal Silverman, Asso- ciate Editor, the ten-page monthly tabloid successfully departed from past techniques and norms by highlighting vastly improved Sports and Feature sections, inside graphics, and, most prominently, a new front page design. Beyond these eye-catching covers drawn by John Brosio and Doug Thomas, topics such as play precasting, campus food costs, student alcohol use and abuse, the placement of senior exams, the draft, affirm- ative action, the disciplinary board, and even the future direction of high school education were discussed and debated by the editors, numerous students, teachers, and guest writ- ers fincluding Mayor Tom Bradleyl. All in all, the three elements of stylistic page design, superb art, and pertinent, well-written articles have combined to produce the best newspaper Loyola has seen for many years. The Editors look back on the year with justifiable pride. At the same time, we apolo- gize to anyone who may have been offended by certain material within the paper. The dedicated staff for the 1984-85 school year includes, from left to right: Bob Cady, chief writerg Doug Anderson, Business Managerg Greg Francis, columnist, Neal Silverman, Associate Editorg Peter McAniff, writerg Tom Gmelich, Sports Editorg John Page, Assistant Photography Editorg Liam Callanan, Feature Editor, Bill Munday, Managing Editor, Robert Mansour, Art Editor, Brian Heimer, Copy Editor, Robert Robinson, productiong and fsittingj Paul Balson, Editor-in-Chief. Missing: Ashraf Youssef and Pat Greer, Photography Editors, and Mr. Michael Bergez, Advisor. Editorial Staffers Immortolized There were, of course, several guiding forces behind all of this, and the truly amazing thing about this year's staff is how they all got along together so well. Paul Neal did it Balson was a strong Editor-in-Chief. After writ- ing several editorials that just shook up the school - Famous Faculty Quotes or Twilight Ap- parition Appears, he decided to tone down his image and leave the controversies to the news staff. Neal You are staying here till you die Silverman certainly de- mands comment. fThen again he always did . . .J The new layout can be credited to him, along with many other things too slanderous to mention. Neal certainly brought the paper into a new perspective. Although Paul never got around to telling him that he was not Editor-in-Chief, let's all keep it a secret, and wish him a fond fare- well. Tom Get Rad, Paul Gmelich was an invaluable asset to the paper. Using all the knowledge he gained from his summer week at Stanford, Tom consistently put out- a section with a soccer article in every one. He was also regarded as the last word on what was funny enough for Feature and what was not. His major accomplishment though was holding back and not nominating himself for Loyalzlst Athlete of the Month. Liam Cashmere Callanan brought the Feature section to new heights land according to some, new lowsj. He waged a constant war with the rest of the staff, try- ing to prove that Feature was im- portant. After being accused of lack of humor in the section, he re- taliated with an onslaught of movie articles. However, his real claim to fame is that he had some- thing axed almost every issue. Bill Ron Raygun Munday was apparently an important figure on the staff. He brought a new meaning to the word pro- duction manager CManaging Editorj. He rose from the guy who puts down lines to the 'fguy who puts down lines and makes editorial decisions. He also saved the Feature section sever- al times. Without the work and time of the supporting cast the Loyalzlst could never have been published. Some of these dedicated students include Bob Roginson, Michael Balaoing, Chris Wagner, Bill Birney, Tim Byrne, John Rosio, Doug Thomas, John Carnpisi, Henry Tirado, John Swenson, John Huston, Jim Seley, Frank Contreras, Barnaby Crahan, Joe Wood, Dennis Wedding, Collin Lynch, Martin Jiminez, Mark Lecker, Kevin Dee, Andy Fenady, Chris Ariola, Sarosh Motivala, Jeff Briggs, Steve Ferraro, James Roughan, Jose Sanchez, Tom Crehan, Ruben Rodarte, Paul Salvaty, Phil Renteria, Sean McEneanex, George Garcia, Andy Nangano, Mark Anderson, and a bunch of other people who just jumped in the picture, really have nothing to do with the paper, but will put it on their transcript anyway. Ashraf Yale S 'f ' Youssef and Pat Where's my staff pic- ture Greer proved that good pic- tures can be taken and developed for the paper despite cracking contact lenses and a continuous shortage of film. Bob Cadybug Cady and Greg Crash Francis kept the issues alive with humor, controver- sy, and more controversy. They performed the unequalled feat of combining the News and Feature sections in each article written. Also worthy of mention are Robert Mansour, who distin- guished himself by drawing more Great Western and Farmer John ads than any other artist in history. John Page, author of the infamous nerd article and leader of the janitorial staff. John Brosio and Doug Thomas, who drew the covers no one dared to criticize. Steve Charbonnet, Circulation Manager, who actually sent issues out. Doug that costs 8190 Anderson who got more advertise- ments than there were pages. Obituaries Chris Whois He? The defense was one of the best in the state and was led by Seniors john Fitzpatrick at safety and Derrick jacob and Tom Tostado at linebacker spots. The year got off to a promising start with Cub shutouts against St. Paul, Santa Ana Valley, El Camino Real, and La Habra while the ofensive assault was led by Seniors Chris Smith, Tom Glascott, and Gerald Luke behind the offensive line skills of john Carl- stroem, Ray Geagan, Tony Lawton, and joe Burschinger. In the league title game the Cubs fought hard against the Bosco Braves, but they were hampered by injuries to several starters, including Senior noseguard jim Brands, and that proved the difference in a tough loss. In first round C.I,F. action the Cubs rallied too late behind junior Dan O'Neil and fell to Marina. It was a year in which every player meant a great deal to the success of the team, and because of that I will remember this season forever. For those who follow us, I wish them the best of luck and hope the proud tradition of Loyola football will con- tinue for them. To the Seniors, I wish you good luck in all of your endeavors and thanks for four great years. Led by co-captains Sen- ior Cwary Puhek and junior Mike McCracken, Loyola be- came the first team in the Del Rey League since 1942 to sweep all divisions as the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh-Soph' all finished with perfect 6-O records. Nowhere was this dominance more evident than at League Finals when McCracken and fellow junior Mitch Sloan finished second and third, sophomore Mark Nemec seventh, and Gary Puhek tenth. In the Frosh-Soph division, the Cubs accomplished an unprecedented sweep of places 1-5. Re- spectively, these Cub runners were Freshmen Skardon Ba- ker, and Sophomores Todd Robinson, Taigi Cratton, john Hennessey, and Charles Carter. The junior Varsity was led by August Dougherty and Chris Moffat, who finished 1-2 at League Finals. Also placing highly were Ed Chambers, Terrence Slocum, and Jon Grubbs. At C.I.F. Finals, Loyola captured its first 2-A crown in the sport of Cross Country. The team was a cohesive unit as McCracken, Puhek, Sloan, jack Henry, Nemec, Dougherty, Baker, Robinson, Wayne Nitti, and Kevin Dee defeated a strong Brawley team. Coaches jack Gallagher and Ed Castellanos have nothing but optimism for the future as the lone loss of Puhek will be offset by the return of Junior phenom Chris Nelson who was key to early league wins, but sat out most of 1984 with an injury. I A number of events occurred which combined to make the 1984 Varsity Water Polo season the best ever. For the first time, the polo team took the league crown, and for only the second time they reached the second round of the C.l.F. playoffs. Under the direction of first year coach Ed Profumo, Servite, the first league opponent, seemed but a pebble in the path of the Cub Steam Roller. The Cubs crushed the Friars for the first time in several years Qsee the picture with the scoreboard in the backgroundj. St. john Bosco proved to be quite a different story. The Cubs led until there were 30 seconds left. They then let down and in the second overtime period lost by three. The following week, the varsity squad would not let up against the ever-powerful Crespi Critters and defeated them for the league title. Entering the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, the Cubs lost to El Dorado, the top-ranked team in C.l.F., in the second round although they did outscore El Dorado 5-4 in the second half. The entire starting team recieved league honors. Seniors Rob Graner, joe Labrie, and Mark Childs were all First Team selections. Graner was also team captain and league co-M.V.P. They received fantastic support from Second Team selections Matt Tysler and Andy Sutton while Junior Matt Holscher garnered an Honorable Mention. Senior Claude Yacoel and Junior Eddy Prado provided great help off of the bench. Finally, the acclaimed Pudgy goalies must receive credit for their inspired play and comparative appetites: First Team selection junior Tim O'Donnell and his Senior cohort Wally Conn. Practice was held 3 times a week all summer except during the Olympics. When Fall came around, the Loyola Cubs became the Los Angeles Cubs and played in the finest club circuit in the state. Following a fourth place finish, the Cubs ventured into the pre-season. A third place finish in the Santa Monica Tourna- ment became the major highlight prior to Del Rey action. As the new year began, so did the Del Rey League and an ensuing roller-coaster ride in the standings for the Cubs. Finishing 6-4-2, Loyola placed third, and for the first time since 1982 found themselves in the C.I.F. playoffs. Two days after the Cubs destroyed Hart High School in the wild card playoff, the season was terminated by Sierra League Champion Rowland High School. Thus, the jour- ney ended 11 months after it had begun. The Cubs had a well diversified attack which has always been a trademark of this team. Blaise Diroll and Dennis Wedding combined for 15 goals and 15 assists to lead the team in offense while Martin Castillo and Second Team All League selection Matt Thiel controlled the center of the field. Second Team All League selection jim Orland and First Team All Leaguers Derek Kurzenknabe, Mike Campbell, and Judd Bogust anchored the strong defense. To the Seniors, Thanks, it's been real! After two months of daily running, lifting and swimming, the Cubs began an extremely tough pre- season, preparing the inexperienced squad for the always close Del Rey League. In the first home game, the Cubs hosted Crespi, ranked ninth in the C.I.F. In one of the most memorable contests in Loyola history, a fired-up Cub five shocked Crespi with a two point victory in overtime. This proved to be the only blemish on the Celts' slate this year. Later in the season, a jam packed Leavey Gymnasium saw the mighty Cub cagers overpower the Colden Knights of St. Francis with a little help from Dancing Barry. A heartbreaking loss to Alemany shattered Cub hopes for post- season play, but the team responded with a fantastic effort in the final game at St. john Bosco. Thanks to incredible backing from the cheerleaders, faculty, boosters and students, the basketball program took big strides in gaining respect and support. Each member of the team would like to thank the student body for their growing enthusiasm. The team is especially grateful to managers Frank Hafner and Vincent Moore. The 1985 Varsity Baseball team is coming back strong this year, and should prove to be the team to beat for the Del Rey League crown. After a disappoint- ing season last year, the Cubs have eight returning lettermen and some promising upcoming players from last year's J.V. squad to combine for one of the stron- gest Varsity teams in several years. Strong pitching backed by a solid defense will prove to be a stopper to the opposition this season. Returning lettermen Tom Peck and Louie Skertich, along with newcomers Mike Van Dyke and Tim O'Donnell promise to make a powerful rotation to stop the bats of defending champ and arch-rival Notre Dame, as well as the rest of the league. Backed by a sure-handed defense, headed by centerfield john Fitzpatrick, outfielder Dave Plotnik, 2nd baseman Tom Fitzpatrick, 1st baseman john Hefner, 3rd baseman Ruben Rodarte, catcher Dan Ma- tusiewicz, and upcoming shortstop Rob Hensley, com- bined with a smart hitting offense the '85 Cubs will definitely be a team to contend with. With new uni- forms, and this being Coach Scott Harrington's swan song year, the Cubs certainly have an incentive to do well. Add to that the strong defense, and a well-round- ed offense, and the Loyola Varsity Cubs should bring home the Del Rey League crown, and possibly more. Last year, the Cub golfers came in third place in the C.l.F. Cham- pionship just after having the Del Rey League title stolen from them for the first time in 5 years. This year the team is load- ed with talent from the experienced sen- iors down through the blossoming under- classmen. Under the guidance of Coach Bill Sanchez, the team is determined to win it all. Seniors Ken Tanigawa, Bob O'Connor, and Steve Cantlay, who have amassed 11 years of varsity experience be- tween themselves, will lead the talented Cubs. juniors comprise the bulk of the team and include Rex Murphy, Robert Develle, Pat Lizza, jeff Whittet, and Brian Arnold. The two newcomers to this year's team are sophomore jon Wiser and Fresh- man Scott Welch. The depth of this squad ensures Loyola of more great teams in the future. This year, however, the unsung Cub golf team is expected to capture the Del Rey title and be big contenders for the C.I.F. Championship. Under the leader- ship of Coach Sanchez, the patriarch of the Loyola faculty, the 1985 Cub golfers will surely uphold the Loyola tradition of the great golf teams of the past. They will be joined by Seniors Doug Ander- son and john Freeman, both returning for their third year on varsity. Also returning from last year's championship squad are Senior Peter McAn- iff, junior Eric Rottman, and Sophomore Frank Yu. The lone newcomer to this year's team is Sopho- more Luis Moreno. The aim of this year's team is to again capture the Del Rey League title and win C.I.F. The 1985 Varsity team has their sights set on a highly successful season. After a disappointing playoff loss last year in the quarterfinals, Coach Roger Yano hopes the Cubs will return to the 41 spot in C.l.F. The setting chores will likely be given to senior Mike Javelera. Ju- niors Parker Blackman and Rick McLaughlin will fight for the other setting spot. The Middle-blockers will be led by Rich Hiney and john McMillan, who returns from a year long shoulder injury. Senior Mac Chandler will fight for court time at the position. The outside hitters will be led by all-leaguers Michael Huntsman and Tom Parr. Defensive specialists will be Romas jarasunas and Terry Holberton, who should see action in the front row. Up from last years undefeated Iunior Varsity team are sen- iors Greg Maffei and Wayne Ariola along with juniors John Shanahan and Mike Griswold. Senior Chris Smith is a definite influence of the team because of his high intensity and all-out play. The Cubs may not have the size and strength which last year's team did, but they make up for it with supreme fundamentals and remarkable speed and quickness. The high-flying Cubs will be satisfied with nothing less than a very successful season. This year the campus ministry manifested its pride in many fine masses and services throughout the year. Deserving special mention are the traditionally great Mass of the Holy Spirit, the mass celebrating Father j. Richard Draper's 25 years of priesthood, and the mass for Mr. Bill Sanchez and his 25 years of service to the Loyola community. Also an integral part of the campus ministry is the weekly penance service organized by Father Ray Al- lender. God Squad, the group that helps organize the masses, must also be appreciated and thanked. R2 :I ' -'tg Y!! T.F.Jr. Thanks for every- thing, Mom, Dad and friends - u Rev. Louis C. Ruldolph, SJ. Mr. Francis H. Clougherty I 1897 - 1984 1919 - 1984 The editors of the El Camino have didicated this page to the memory of two men whose lives were examples of the tradition and spirit of Loyola High School. Both gave much to the Loyola community + both, in the spirit of the school's patron, were men for others - both will be missed. , ' Rev. Louis C. Rudolph was Loyola's treasurer for over twenty-three years. Working behind the scenes, Fr. Rudolph performed an important service for the school community, working quietly and patiently to make sure that all the decimal points lined up and that all the facts, figures and fractions added up. His work, while it sent largely unseen was a service that helped to insure that the school and all its various activities would run smoothly. It was a service he performed gladly, even into the eighty- seventh year of his life. His dedication brings to mind the words of St. Ignatius: Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous, to give and not to count the cost, to toil and not to seek for rest. . Mr. Francis Clougherty graduated from Loyola High in 1929, but his involvement with and devotion to the school did not end there. He was actively involved with the school since his graduation, especially since 1939 when he and his brother founded the Clougherty Packing.Company fFarmer John.J A generous benefactor and supporter of school activities, Mr. Clougherty was a man whose beliefs and actions personified the spirit and values of Loyola. He was proud of the school. The school can be proud to have a man of such goodness counted amoung its alumni. In 1980, the Loyola Chapel was named in honor of Mr. Clougherty. A plaque affixed to the wall of the chapel reads: This chapel is named in honor of Francis H. Clougherty, '29, a man of faith and love . . . 'a man for others.' Captured by the spirit of St. Ignatius, he is a model for all who pray here. . You will be with us always. . . -C 131' -nd'-E hz .P sp ia i. A2 :uw ln nn ll ' H r nf-iff' M :Q him X In some ways Loyola has changed dramati- cally since the good old days. The one con- stant through the years has been the dedicat- tied Jesuit community. Loyola is one of the few schools in Los Angeles frequently boasting two or more generations from the same family. That tells you something about the Loyola tra- dition. Many of my friends were met through the Loyola connection. We have a shared experience which brought and holds us together. We bask in Loyola's reflected glory. Henry K. Workman '44 I remember thinking Loyola was the best school, with the best teach- ers, the best at letic teams, and the best friends. Being a student at Loy- ola set you apart from the crowd. There was a bond between all of us that allowed us to draw strength from one another. It provided the en- vironment for me to develop into a Christian man. A man who evolved with the basic principle to better himself and those around him. My sense of pride for Loyola has grown with each new experience and chal- lenge in my life. Loyola in my mem- ory is a gem which become more valuable with the passing of time. Dan Terheggen '68 . -t Vg .V-H15 tgglxflf-'ft I ' - , 'Q -sl-iw xiaiti Q Loyola High has been an integal part of my life for 9 years, as a stu- dent, a coach, a lay teacher and now as a Jesuit. The racial mix, the oppor- tunities for involvement and respon- sibility, the faculty, campus ministry and social action programs offer the students opporunities for growth. I am proud to have been associated with Loyola. I am proud that Loyola tries to help each person's heart see that the way to be is as a man for others to the greater glory of God. I hope that all students may be able to look back with the same pride as I have and with the same desire to help make it even more pleasing in the eyes of our God. Eduardo Samaniego, SJ. '68 196 T hu.. 7 au.-.,,,,, hn-.e ...Y - i '? as--f-.W-...vs , Loyola is a sampling of both the joys and sorrows from life's vast experience. When one advances further into this experience, one takes friendships and knowl- edge. However, left behind is oneself and one's accom- plishments which combine to weave the school's his- tory and the school itself . . . Loyola Pride. YY ff' The El Camino staff of 1985 would like to thank everyone who contri- buted to the completion of this yearbook. All who dedicated time, mon- ey, and effort exhibited Loyola pride in the truest sense of the word. Special thanks must go to Mr. Frank Kozakowski and Nena Roswell for the use of their old yearbooks, buttons, and cub related objects. Thank you also for your continued enthusiasm and concern for the yearbook. We would also like to thank Er. Cahalan, SJ. and Mrs. Doro- thy Whelan for their time and effort in tracking down the names, addresses and phone numbers of the graduates who reflected on their Loyola experience. We extend a special thanks to these three men, Mr. Henry Workman, Mr. Dan Terheggen, and Eduardo Samaniego, SJ., who wrote for us under the pressure of the final deadline. Appreciation goes out to all the cooperative coaches and moderators who, realizing we were fighting time, helped organize team, C.L.S., and club pictures. We are in debt to Mr. John Harris, the man who paid our bills and kept our processing trays filled with chemicals and cameras filled with film. We also thank Mr. Paul Collins for his concern and support. There are three S.J.'s who we need to express our gratititude, Bro. McDermott SJ., Mr. Scott Harrignton, SJ., and Mr. Eduardo Samaniego, SJ. Each helped us fill blank pages with pictures and memories. We additionally thank all the photo labs who convereted slides to prints and enlarged many of our negatives. These labs were Newell Color Lab, Photo Key Lab, and Edward's Photography. The staff gives Mrs. Gury a very special thanks for all the times she helped photography many sports and activities. Her dedication and support saved us from missing deadlines, and her photos transformed many plain pages to exciting pages. We thank the Loyalist staff for lending us photos when we were in need, letting us use the darkroom in a bind, and giving us that extra can of rubber cement. Thanks for all of your friendship and concern. We would like to thank all the teachers and parents who helped us complete this book, especially Dr. Morillo, Pr. Colosimo, SJ., Mr. Edward McAn- iff, and our neighbor Mr. Grego. Our final and most sincere thanks go out to our moderator Mr. Tom O'Neill. His creativity, compassion, and desire for and excellent year- book kept us in good spirits through the tense weeks and taught us as much about life, during our midnight chats, as producing a yearbook. We could not have accomplished this feat without him. Thank you, Mr. Tom O'Neill, SJ. --Q s .ac L ! i i . s I 'cw 4 ' V' ' ' 1 my I nf-s, ., 5: if?
