This is achieved by frequent attendance at Mass and reception of the sacraments, periods of retreat and recollection, and ti- nally mental prayer. The Sodalist is also pledged to the spiritual and material loenetit ot others, consequently, he helps hospital patients to attend Mass, teaches the cate- chism to children, and col.ects food for Christ's poor. This is voluntary self-sacrifice. The Sodality is the spark plug tor Catholic Action, tor it trains leaders who will influence the world about them, a world much in need ot sound guidance. Father and Son Father Rector distributes Holy Communion. Communion Breakfast With a genuine spirit of trust in God and in each other, over nine hundred Loyola fathers and sons made our annual Communion Breakfast, sponsored by the Dad's Club, a great success. First order of the day was Mass and Communion at Blessed Sacrament Church. Fr. J. O. O'Callaghan gave an inspirational sermon. Then came an excellent breakfast blended perfectly with fine entertainment at the Moulin Rouge, courtesy of Mr. Frank Sennes. Guest speakers were Fr. Pluskell, Rector of Loy- ola High School, and Mr. Mullen, President of the Dad's Club. Loyola's fine Christian spirit is a shining model of Catholic Action. Brushing aside the role of mere gal- lery Christians, Loyola's men have made a grand pro- fesion of faith. , .M x r ' g..,g,g r ' :.- K ' ng! ' , 3 f , K U , W., . K 1 . 1 ,,. Speech, at Loyola, has always been a long-stand- ing institution, and this year's orators have certain- ly added another sturdy brick to the foundation, as evidenced by the Carrollton Club's tournament where Loyola placed six finalists: R. Huston, T. O'Brien, T. Woods, R, Marshall, D. Gargaro, and R. Shrum-and won the sweepstakes trophy by four hundred and fifty points! ln the Southern California Debate League Spring Open, R. Coldren, J. Torelli, and R. Shrurn vvon some rnore honors for cubville, and in the American Legion Speech Contest Randy Huston won a third place in state competition. Credit also must be given to the speech coaches, Mr. Matthevvson, S,J. and Mr. Buckenmeyer, S.J., without whose help success would have been irnpossilole. Randy Huston, Loyolci's speakster. Loyola men, by participation in such events as the Sophomore and Freshmen Ora- torical contests, cultivate this art, and, in doing so, reveal hidden oratorical powers. From this good-natured competition, a pro- found influence otten results in a boy's lite. Also pictured here are scholars who have shown Themselves academically worthy of Scholarship awards. Hirning ready for a parade. Patiently directed by Maior Hirning, U.S.A., and Mr. Gon- salves, S.J., Loyola's famed band infuses spirit into a multi- tude of school activities. Its fine harmonic arrangements bring Loyola many honors in concert halls. In addition, its rousing beat gives our sportsmen that needed lift to try just a little harder in athletic competition. The DOVIOJ also TYOHS- forms an otherwise dull rally into a gigantic display of spirit and unity. However, the band's true worth is perhaps most evident in the martial air it gives the R.O.T.C. unit, indeed, it makes the difference between a good unit and a great one. Thus, you can appreciate the value of the many long practice hours spent in the pursuit of musical perfection. The result is surely worth the effort. All right men, fall in.
