Text from Pages 1 - 196 of the 1974 volume:

LOYOLA OF MONTREAL VOL. 60 The Editors of Review ’74 hope to express in this Loyola Yearbook what Loyola has come to mean through the years. As we see Loyola merging into the new Concordia University we remember how the faculties, organizations, and student activities have developed. After this year Loyola as we knew it will no longer exist and it is our hope that the spirit of Loyola, a spirit of com- munity, will continue within the framework of the new University. eS fog ae : en EEE ‘ere = Pre ee Cap Re een nee remy t gee a —o im a @a5m bee |b ta | i Hi He HH Si |. ont | a Gia oi i rH id | | : ta, aaa it | ii ti one 6hlCU il | ; WN, RUE OE ee _ 8 Dear Graduate: June 1, 1974 You as anew graduate are almost a new being with so much talent actuated and confirmed in some meaningful search or direction. We can say that James Bay, the Olympic village, women’s liberation, peace in the Middle East, Concordia University are at this moment little more than words, visions of pertinacious dreamers, promises for a better tomorrow. Similarly, we can say that you as a new graduate are a potential engine of achievement, a plant about to blossom and bear fruit, a pledge that the future will honour the past and improve the present. But, you, unlike projects and causes that rise and fall as they render service, are a human person with immanent enhancement that must transcend usefulness for external objectives, however noble. Your essential meaning lies within your dynamism and destiny. True, the human person will, for good or evil, influence things, processes, events, even other persons. But its measure of ex- cellence is itself and its degree of self-fulfillment. | sense that a criterion of worth within self can translate as selfishness, self-centred aggression or timidity, and can degenerate into self-applauding vanity. Indeed, | suspect that all of us turn at times the process and treasure of learning into self-seeking meanness, muddle-headedness or mischief. Examples abound. Dachau, Watergate, Gulag Ar- chipelago, Hiroshima tower as shameful monuments raised by intelligent educated men who led themselves astray. And on a less cosmic scale closer to home, our own experience bears painful witness. Indeed, against man’s dismal record some may scorn all education as vain and deceptive. | am not of their number as you must have guessed from my congratulations to you at convocation. For me, more temperate thoughts about education seem worth consideration. And | do not hesitate to invite you to share them and build on them as you con- tinue your education, | hope more richly, all your life long beyond college classrooms. First then, education is essentially a work by the mind on the mind. Schools in our society house all sorts of services catering to individual and social wants, but they exist to attend upon the mind, to share and expand human knowledge. Doing, willing, being of fit body, displaying social grace, communicating, leading are all desirable human achievements but, as objectives of colleges, they are subordinate to the care and feeding of the mind. | do not deny these and other talents and accomplishments; | simply propose to you that they walk in treacherous ways unless guided by reason, in- formed, inquiring, disciplined, developed reason. Some misuses of knowledge come from good-intentioned persons who charge the heart to speak for the mind to such disastrous effect for the mind and the heart. | think that | speak to your experience. You have come across people, perhaps teachers, wounded by the alienating cruelty of contemporary society. Book learning does nothing to relieve this relentless, inner anguish. Something has to reach their loneliness, their pain, their emptiness; feeling must be resuscitated from stifled contempt. You must understand a little if they close their books and minds to pursue peace in their emotions. But they pay too dear a price for too fleeting a truce. Education, | hold, is by the mind for the mind. That is a simple definition that, unfortunately, issues in a simplistic un- derstanding of education as one brain plugged into another. But, education is a personal attribute; it is better un- derstood as a dialogue among persons who tell, listen, ask. And the mind, for its part, discharges its high essential of- fice not as autarch but as servus servorum in the commonwealth of a person’s skills, talents, emotions and poten- tialities. As alienating society goads human feelings and affections into rebellion against thought, it can also dupe the mind into a practical repudiation of our feelings, emotions and hence the very fullness of ourselves. Somewhere earlier, | spoke of self-fulfillment as an objective, and just now | have seemed to concentrate on setting just and peaceful equilibrium within the person. | may have given the impression that the educated person has merely to come to terms within self. Let me say that | am profoundly moved by Martin Buber’s insight that there is no “Il” unless there be “Thou”. The I-Thou equation is not only a high sounding saying, a cry of the heart, a dosage against alienation. It is an essential part of the formula for respecting the mind, unifying the self, and fulfilling the person -- in a word, for starting to build upon our education. We are up against those words of St. Augustine that | like: ‘The truth is neither mine or another’s; but belongs to all of us whom Thou callest to partake of it, warning us terribly not to account it private to ourselves lest we be deprived of it”. God bless you! Yours sincerely, Lip were T Patrick G. Malone, S.J. President LOYOLA COLLEGE : “earn me 7141 SHERBROOKE ST. GRAHAM Dean of Arts Dean of Science LARRY BOYLE ALFRED AUDET GEORGE JOLY Dean of Commerce Dean of Students Dean of Engineering GEORGE UIHLEIN Dean Uihlein was a member of the Student Services Department at Loyola since 1966. He brought to Loyola more than 20 years experience as a national officer of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. As Dean of Men, he devoted his energy and time to advising student organizations, counselling students, overseeing student lounge space, in short tirelessly helping to “personalize” Loyola for her students. Hundreds of Chem 112 students in the last eight years have been in- troduced to the wonders of test tubes and bunsen burners in Professor Uihlein’s lab. A warm and generous man ready always to do anything for Loyola and her students, George Uihlein personified the finest qualities in man. His death is a great loss to all of us at Loyola. 15 16 Bio-Physical Education LEFT TO RIGHT: William C. Fielding, Doug Daigneault, Dr. E. Enos, Paul Arsenault, Russ Blackwell. But on a wet Saturday in November, they came home winners. In fact, not just as winners, but champions. The Loyola soccer Warriors had cap- tured the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union championship by outpenalty-kicking the Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 after both teams had been deadlocked at 1-1 following regulation time and 30 minutes of overtime. Mark Sosnowski’s goal provided Quebec and Loyola with their first ever national collegiate title and, though it was long time coming, it was well worth the wait. 85 it came in double overtime ... When the regular season ended with the Warriors annihilating Laval 7-0 to stretch their regular season winning streak to an unbelieveable 50 games, word was out that again they would choke in the clutch as they had done so often before. However, led by the scoring of Mark Sosnowski, Garth Pringle, and Jim Corsi and by the goaltending antics of Wally Smith, the gritty footballers hung tough. At the Awards Banquet, Harry Hus was called upon to make a presentation to his team. On the ud a | podium, he leaned to the microphone, his voice cracking, his eyes starry, and said to his players, “Guys, I’ve never said this before, but | love you.” And that is the stuff of which champions are made. annem . é 298 The victory over Alberta did not go unnoticed. The Warriors received congratulatory telegrams from Mayor Jean Drapeau, Quebec’s Premier Robert Bourassa, and Prime Minister Trudeau. Upon their return to Mon- treal, the triumphant Warriors were feted at City Hall where they signed the Golden Book thus becoming in- stant VIP’s - Very Important Players. Back at Loyola, the names of the players and coach Harry Hus were submitted in nomination to the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame while at the ... after 50 straight league wins Athletic Awards Banquet in March, the team was further honoured by two standing ovations from their fellow athletes and soccer star Jim Corsi being awarded the Athlete of the Year honours. 87 88 TOMMIE POWER: QUAA CHAMPS PLUS... PLUS... PLUS... Aside from the soccer Warriors, the hockey Tommies were Loyla’s most successful team in 1973-74 and easily the most outstanding women's team the school has ever had. They finished first in the QUAA, captured the league crown, won the Brown University tournament, and became the first Loyola team ever to win their host tournament. In regular season play, they outscored the opposition 93-1. All of that speaks for itself. 89 Determination and courage spelled success if the Tommies couldn’t win it, then no one could The individual performances were just as impressive as the team’s. Diane Quart, athlete par excellence, was the mainstay of the defence that helped Janet Norman earn nine shutouts during the regular season. Quart was honoured by her team- mates at season’s end when they retired her sweater while Norman was given a brief write-up in Sports Illustrated magazine. By January, the Tommies had become one of the best known sports teams in the area. They deserved it. 91 92 While the soccer Warriors were romping towards another undefeated season, their autumn counterparts were doing everything they could to defend their QUAA title. Everything that is except succeeding. It was a frustrating season capped rather unceremoniously by a 37-0 defeat to McGill that knocked the Warriors out of play-off contention. The season’s record, in a league that could boast only mediocre quality football which Just one of those years was reflected by the fan turnout, was a deceiving 4 wins, 3 losses. However, two of those wins came in 52-0 and 66-0 wins over MacDonald and CMR, both clubs with minimal talent. Only a 23-17 win at Loyola over Bishop's gave any inkling of the Warriors possessing play-off calibre talent. That game was one of the most thrilling seen at Loyola in years. but it had its moments eet However, not everything was gloom and despair. Wade Clare, the 1973 rookie sen- sation, continued his rushing success that included a three touchdown performance against MacDonald. And once star fullback Bernie Muldoon was sidelined early in the year, Clare was called upon to take up the slack. Also, the Warriors’ magic foot, Mike Lapensee, was drafted by the CFL’s B.C. Lions in the off-season and, though he didn’t make the club, had salvaged just a little more pride for his team. ti 1 gee a K = =F = gi = a, Sa i _ NY 93 94 On June 1, 1974, Diane Quart became the first woman ever to receive the Brodrick reward given yearly to the graduating student who has excelled in academic and ex- tracurricular activities. And oh, how she deserved it! While at Loyola, she didn’t just play for, but starred on the women's hockey, basketball, volleyball, and tennis teams as well as winning the 1971 table tennis and 1974 golf tournaments. And even though coaches sti!l marvel at her ability to excel at every sport she tries, she managed to graduate cum laude in Communication Arts. After being named Female Athlete of the Year for her last four years, she’s a shoe-in to become the first female in- ductee into the Loyola Sports Hall of Fame. With 11 veterans back, they stepped up one notch to third place highlighting their season with a 52-48 win over McGill. That was nice. However, they failed to win a game from Laval for the second straight year and that proved to be their undoing. But then, nobody’s perfect. A TALE OF TWO TOMMIE TEAMS Volleyball: Volleyball has been, more or less, the black sheep of women’s sports in recent years. What it needed was a coach who could motivate his players to give their all. Nick Timt- senko filled that bill more than ad- mirably in giving Loyola at least a respectable name in women’s volleyball. By defeating McGill in the two final games, the Tommies managed to become the most suc- cessful of the English schools’ teams. It was, as the saying goes, a job well done. 95 96 When the clock struck none, Loyola was done The day was Friday, Feb. 22, and the location was the Loyola gym. The Warriors were pitted against the Sir George Williams Georgians in a QUAA semi-final play- off contest. The score was 67-67 with slightly less than 60 seconds to play, and the Warriors had the ball. But suddenly an errant pass fell into the hands of the Georgians and they managed to perform the tactical stall which the Warriors had failed to do. With the clock ticking away, the Georgians were still trying to set up that one final shot that would bury the Warriors once and for all. Then, with one second to go, the Georgians got the ball to their top shooter, Tom Brethel, who sent it threw the rim as the buzzer sounded the death knell for the Loyola Warriors. Some fans...er... loved watching Warriors Erglis and Hussey The last second defeat notwithstanding, the Warriors did enjoy a successful season in which they captured first place with a stun- ning 64-63 win over the same Georgians. In addition, two Warriors, Wayne Hussey and Ron Puskarich, were named to the QUAA first All Star team while John Erglis’ super performances earned him a berth on the second team. “ Get thee gone, Warrior! ” 98 €) ..and they went Perhaps a 5-4 semi-final play-off loss to a team that eventually went on to the national final doesn’t rate as a disaster. No, perhaps not, for any team other than the Loyola Warriors. So will someone explain what hap- pened on that fateful February eve, the same night in which the basket- ball Warriors were defeated by the same school? Stymied by the super- human goaltending of Sir George’s Bernie Wolfe and throttled by their own inconsistency, the Warriors folded the clutch. And so now the wait for a national hockey crown has been extended for yet another year. = Everything was fine, for a while Although the season ended on a none too happy note, the hockey Warriors did enjoy some high moments. They defeated the then defending national champion Toronto Blues 2-1 at Loyola and, during a tour of the eastern U.S., they managed to defeat St. Lawrence 3-2 after two fine showings against Boston and Providence Colleges. Against one of the top ranked U.S. teams, St. Louis, the Warriors were edged out 7-5 and 5-4. In the Sir George Tournament, the Warriors were outhustled 4-0 by the same St. Mary’s squad they had defeated in pre-season play in Halifax. Then, when the dust had settled at the end of the year, not only did the Warriors boast another first place finish but also three players, Mike Culleton, Dave Brandt, and Glen Surbey, had been named to the league’s second all Star team. 99 INTRAMURALS: The action, the spirit, ) the thrills, = 7 ... the talent? + he 100 Out of the classroom and into the fray, not even an exam could keep them away Know something? For a relatively tiny liberal arts college, we’ve done alright in athletics. Not just in in- tercollegiate sports but in intramural sports, too. The most recent guess estimate was that in 1973-74, some 1800 students participated in intramural sports and in our athletic clubs. The girls added two new sports, broomball and softball, to their list while the men set all- time records by having 25 hockey teams, 24 broomball teams, another 17 in football, and 10 in basketball. Now that’s performance! 101 ney Pram And the punishment for losing? One case of beer instead of two! 102 Pick an activity. Go ahead, pick one, any one. Loyola’s College Orientation Program managed in a short three weeks to expose students to most aspects of campus life (academic, cultural, sports, etc.) while at the same time supplying them with lively entertainment. For both new students and those returning for another year this joint venture of the Loyola Students’ Association and the Student Services Department proved to be successful. It was a fine begin- ning to a great year. This year’s program was launched on September 4th with Deconfusion Centres and the slightly confused New-Student tours. C.O.P. stressed entertainment using an open-air pub, the C.O.P. concert, acar rally, the Kronenfest, and the opening of the Warriors Football season to welcome all Loyola students. 108 On September 19 the L.S.A. offered something to those students. still standing after the consumption of all that beer at the ‘“Kronenfest’’ and related events; its Open-House. This gave students an opportunity to see the L.S.A. in action in a very intimate way. But some were content to sim- ply watch the suds disappear once again. BLOOD DRIVES The gift of Blood is truely the gift of Life. Over the years the Loyola community has shown its awareness of this fact and in 1973-74 Blood Drives were again an integral part of Loyola experience. This year two were held; one sponsored by C.O.P. on September 20th and the other, put on by the Commerce Students Association which took place on January 23rd. Both proved highly successful. A much appreciated helping-hand was given by the ZET sorority on both occasions. They were there with the intention of gaining a first-hand appreciation of some aspect of the political, social, or cultural life in a state whose impact on the Middle East is steadily growing. Reports based on their research would form the basis of a year-long seminar course headed by Prof. Henri Habib who was responsible for organizing this unique educational experience. Accompanying the students on the Libyan Government-sponsored tour were six faculty members and three Loyola administrators who were to study the Libyan educational system with a view to student exchanges between Loyola and the University of Libya. Tony Di Ciocco (with bag) in the “suq”. The Loyola Globe-Trotters arrived in Tripoli via Paris and Rome, and from the moment of their arrival were ex- posed to magnificent Arab hospitality. They were to stay in the best hotels in both Tripoli and Benghazi; enjoy an excursion into the Libyan Sahara to visit an oil field; be guests of honour on the reviewing stand for parades commemorating the Fourth Anniversary of the Libyan Revolution of 1969; and visit with several Cabinet ministers including the Prime Minister, Major Jalloud, the Ministers of the Economy and Education, and the Under-Secretary of Labour. With so much cooperation from the officials of state the trip was bound to be successful, but the students agreed that it was the friendliness of the common people with whom they came in contact which made it truly memorable. From these encounters in the streets and suqs (markets) of Tripoli and from exchanges of opinions with students of their University, our students were able to better form an over-all picture of the Libyan Arabs and their society. The atmosphere of well-lubricated chaos was evident in the various events unique to this celebration. Many of the most successful events of past years were brought back while new ones were introduced. Thus we saw the return of the week-long pub, intramural tournaments and film series, combined with popular new events such as the skating party at Beaver Lake and Grand-Prix Wrestling. With such highlights as the Scavenger Hunt and Snowsculptures on Opening Day, the Tricycle Race, the Dog-Sled Race, Ski-Day at St. Sauveur, and, the Sno’Ball, Loyola’s last Carnival can be summarized in a single word - successful. This past year has seen a great amount of activity conducted by the L.S.A. In both social and cultural spheres the Students! Association was responsible for the: College Orien- tation Programme (C.0.P.), Carnival, Cultural Week, Film Series, Graduation Dance -as well as numerous parties organized by groups within the L.S.A. On the political front, many key decisions were made as a result of student demands. The Centre de Frangais Langue Seconde, established at the beginning of the academic year, was a direct result of student desires. The L.S.A. saw the need for French courses which truly served the anglophone community, and action was taken to ensure the presence of functional French learning at Loyola. We were successful in the endeavour. Steps were initiated to secure decent student representation on all departmental committees and this was achieved. Last but not least, Whatever Happened to Loyola campaign was launched by the L.S.A. The response and participation by the Loyola community was beyond the most optimistic expectations. The campaign continues on the legislative level and the need for more public manifestation seems at times to be inevitable. To the graduates of '74 : You will be alumi and you will have access to a group which will reflect your feelings for Loyola. Because your studies have concluded at Loyola does not mean your input has diminished. Continue to take an active interest in Loyola! In conclusion, we would like to thank all the people who made our year as co=presidents rewarding. There are people we met in the course of our term whom we have grown to know, respect, and love. However, in 1967, this offer was withdrawn and replaced by one of the Royal Bank with the stipulation that the bank be allowed to open a branch in the centre. But, for reasons unknown, this offer was dropped. Then, in 1970, the Quebec government approved a loan of $1.2 million from the original $2.2 million. But Loyola’s failure to respond again postponed construction. Finally, the Board of Directors of the L.S.A. passed a motion calling for the construction of the building with an approximate cost of $650,000. A direct result was the establishment of the Campus Centre Committee. It outlined plans for a Centre that would have such facilities as a lounge, billiards and table tennis area, stereo room, cafeteria, and a pub. The actual construction was scheduled to begin in the fall of 1972 to be completed by April of '73. However, the final completion did not come until December of 1973. The Pub, manned by students, probably enjoyed the greatest success of all Campus Centre activities featuring several highly entertaining live shows. The upper floor of the Centre houses a lounge that is not only a comfortable place to relax but also large enough to be used for recep- tions. A listening room features a series of 21 eight-track tape-decks with stereo headsets and plush lounge chairs that make the listening so much more enjoyable. In its first month of operation, it became the hub of the Loyola com- munity. ee . 4 = 4 + Lee 139 142 THE ISSUE During the 1973-74 academic year the merger between Loyola College and Sir George Williams University was an in- timate issue of crucial importance for the entire Loyola community. Although the Quebec government was slow to give legal approval to the union, many of the proposed governing bodies of Concordia had begun to actively function. The Loyola Students’ Association agreed in principle with the merger but widespread concern surfaced on campus as it became evident that Loyola’s new status left much to be desired. The L.S.A. therefore, on behalf of its 4,800 members, challenged the structure of the ‘“‘new” University. In the last week of January the L.S.A. launched the “Whatever Happened to Loyola?’ campaign. The main goal of the campaign was to inform the students as to the situation of the new University and, hopefully, to ameliorate Loyola’s position within Concordia. It was a week of in- formation and public protest; flyers, posters, buttons, in- formation booths, mail-outs, and assemblies. The impact of the campaign was phenomenal. The en- thusiastic response of the Loyola students was important for our student representatives in their negotiations with the administration. The campaign proved that the students cared about their College. Marc Tigh, L.S.A. Co-President at the news conference. The General Assembly (below and opposite right). 143 Signing a letter to Provincial Education Minister Francois Cloutier at one of the information booths. THE RESULT In aS much as the goals of the campaign were: (1) to gain information on the status of the New University, and, (2) to demand a stronger Loyola representation within the major legislative bodies of Concordia, the campaign could be said to have been a success. More important was the trend which recognized students as the lifeblood of any Univer- sity; to ignore their requests and shun their presence as a responsible force within the University community is a grave mistake. Throughout the campaign student representatives made the point of asserting their views and the protest of Loyola students was a warning that Con- cordia would never survive as a credible institution of higher education if the students were not given a full and equal chance of participation within the framework of the new institution. Concordia University has the potential of being a truly magnificent institution and in maintaining a respect for the two founding partners it will be assured. “It matters nothing that differences of education or training cause us to express our hopes in different ways. We feel that we are of the same kind, and we find that our very dif- ferences are a common armour, as though there were a dimension of life in which all striving makes for nearness, not only within a corporate body but heart to heart.” THE FUTURE OF MAN - Teilhard de Chardin Sewing the “Whatever Happened to Loyola?” banner was thirsty work. 144 + Grech Whalev Or habPened To happened to loyola ?] Chapel service before convocation Scott MacKinnon accepting the Loyola Commerce Medal 148 oe Rev.
