For commuters, home away from home takes the form of the Caf, complete with that lived-in appeal: Radio Loyola drowned out by raucous rap- pings and the aroma of food and tobacco. Somewhere in the sea of people is always a famil- iar face. The merry community pic- tured opposite is academic — the ultimate purpose of its daily gatherings is the search for truth, or so goes the cliche. It’s also an elaborate game. All players begin at the bookstore (where they obt ain playing pieces)... LIBRARY TALK IN . . . and proceed to the library, where more sources of erudi- tion are to be found (athletic funds permitting). Unfortunate- ly, the caf is too small to ac- commodate all the socializing, so this spills over into the li- brary, successfully competing with more serious games and pastimes. 14 KIERKEGAARD Lucretius, The Americanization of Emily, ‘| think, therefore | am’’, Teilhard de Chardin, self- actualization, Jefferson and American democracy, “‘To be or not to be’’, Kierkegaard, Sum- ma Theologica, minorities and social change . . . Interminable hours are spent hunched over lab benches. But labs are happenings. ALICE IN WONDERLAND The engineer is the scien- tist perfected, the pragmatist par excellence (‘‘Damn all this useless theorizing; full speed ahead!’’). Perhaps because of the minuteness of the engin- eering community at Loyola, this superiority is not touted too ostentatiously. AGAPE Much of this art reached the Loyola student in the form of Agape, a Loyola News supple- ment, with all kinds of verbal visual head stuff. While the Agape people tried to rub the said student’s nose in_ his culture... 22 LOYOLA NEWS ... the News staffers were desperately trying to keep up with more mundane political events at Loyola and other areas of the globe. As the cam- pus went from crisis to crisis, the staffers toiled from issue to issue. Following this, Loyola students put on a multi-media play. The theme was political and the effect in- teresting and different. 31 SNOWBALL The underaged got an- other chance to hit the bar as Carnival ’70 came to an end. Loyola’s Varsity Basket- ball, won 17 of its league games for an impressive record of won-lost (17-0). Once in the national Fin- als, however we showed little of the spark which led us to the league champions. The past academic year was without doubt the most turbulent in Loyola’s 74 year history and cer- tainly marked a turning point in the college’s continu- ing search for a permanent niche in Quebec’s educa- tional community. During the height of the controversy involving the non-renewal of Dr. Srinivassa Santhanam’s contract demonstrations and sit-ins took place on what was almost a day-to-day basis, disrupting the normal ad- ministrative activities of the college for students and faculty alike. The appearance of police on several occasions and the instigation of irritating security measures 48 further added to the atmosphere of hostility and ten- sion that marred many a student’s graduating year and instilled very real anxieties in the hearts of those remaining. Certainly much discussion remains to be had and many changes will have to be made before the deep divisions that appeared this year are bridged to any appreciable degree. But hopefully, if as much effort is put into healing the wounds as was shown by those who participated in the following chronology of this year’s events, some viable solution may yet be found to the many problems facing Loyola today. June 24. College president Patrick G. Malone announces the board of trustees has vetoed a decision of senate to reopen the case of two Loyola professors whose contracts are not being renewed for the coming year. July 2. After several inconclusive meetings with administration officials the faculty association officially requests the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) to intervene in the case of nuclear physicist Srinivassa Santhanam, one of the two professors involved in the June senate recommendations. July 18. Foreshadowing many noisy demonstrations later in the year some 80 students and faculty confront President Malone in the lobby of the Jesuit residence to demand implementation of the two senate resolutions overruled by the trustees. July 25. Following a lengthy meeting about 50 people stage the year’s first sit-in, occupying the F. C. Smith auditorium over- night to protest the trustees’ refusal to discuss the case of Dr. Santhanam. August. In the ensuing weeks there are threats of further occupation and possible hunger strikes to back student and faculty demands but no progress is made in starting talks to break the deadlock. Meanwhile behind-the-scenes negotiations continue between CAUT and college officials. September 18. Breaking the silence they have maintained from the start of the Santhanam controversy the college trustees announce they are reorganizing their seven-man board, increas- ing its membership to 15 and bringing in Jesuits from outside the Loyola community for the first time in the College’s 74- year history. October 8. Following the resignation of seven elected arts sen- ators and a walk-out by the three student senators, the col- lege’s highest academic body reverses its June decision calling for arbitration in the case of Dr. Santhanam and declares the case closed. October 14. A referendum is held by the Loyola of Montreal Student Association to decide if the college’s 4100-day students should call a strike to prod administration officials into recon- sidering their position. The strike vote is adopted by a slim 13-vote majority (1775-1762) and LMSA critics claim irregulari- ties take place in the voting. October 26. A three-day strike to demand the administration agree to binding arbitration in the case of Dr. Santhanam and increase the number of student representation on the college senate. October 28. Accompanied by two other trustees, President Ma- lone defends the administration’s recent actions before a hostile audience of 800 in the Smith auditorium and announces that no punitive action will be taken against those professors who took part in the strike earlier in the week. November 3. Stating categorically that the Santhanam case is officially closed president Malone triggers a sit-in by over 200 people in the corridor outside his office trapping himself and several members of the executive committee of senate inside for over four hours. November 4. LMSA president Marcel Nouvet resigns his post following a constitutional dispute with the association’s newly- elected board of directors over a non-confidence vote in his executive’s action in the Santhanam affair. November 6. Montreal police are called onto Loyola’s campus to remove ex-student president Marcel Nouvet from a senate meeting after he refused to heed warnings that he stop his attempts to disrupt the meeting. November 11. The executive committee of senate proposes a task force be established to consider altering the composition of the academic body because of widespread feelings it is unrepresentative of campus opinion. November 12. Following repeated sit-ins in the halls of the administration building dean of students Roderick Shearer places five students on probation for contravening a senate order to cease all disruptive activities on campus. November 12. The first of many faculty association reshuffles takes place at a marathon six-hour meeting that throws out professors Donald Savage and James Moore, both of whom actively supported Dr. Santhanam in his appeal to CAUT. November 20. An unexpected bomb blast rocks the south stairwell of the Bryan building causing over $150,000 damage. Though an estimated 500 people were in the building at the time no one was injured by the explosion. 49 November 28. Paul Aitken is elected interim president of the LMSA, defeating incumbent Marcel Nouvet by 64 votes in a campaign that promised to restore trust and communication between the student association and the college administration. December 3. Vandalism takes place in the offices of the student association president Paul Aitken. An estimate of the total damage to college property during the year’s disturbances is later placed at $20,000. December 15. A three-man fact finding commission from the Canadian Association for University Teachers conducts hearings on the Loyola campus in its continuing investigation of the Santhanam case. December 15. Thirty-one faculty members receive notice their contracts will not be renewed for the 1970-1971 academic year precipitating a flurry of protests and resignations amid cries the administration is conducting a political purge of those opposed to its policies. December 18. An ad hoc group of Loyola professors calls on the provincial government to consider the possibilities of estab- lishing a trusteeship over Loyola because of the handling of this year’s disputes by the college’s Jesuit administrators. January 7. Following the Christmas break students begin an- other overnight sit-in outside the office of President Malone that quickly escalates into a five-day quasi-occupation of the administration building. January 12. One hundred and fifty members of Montreal’s riot squad invade the administration building to evict more than 500 people who have gathered there during the preceding four days and Loyola’s Jesuit trustees announce they are closing the college for one week to allow for a ‘‘cooling off’ period. January 14. McGill law professor Perry Meyer is appointed by provincial authorities to conduct a government inquiry into the worsening situation at Loyola. January 20. As a result of mediation efforts by professor Meyer, college authorities suspend the December 15 letters of non- renewal and both sides in the contract dispute agree to abide by the findings of an impartial review board whose duties are later assumed by Meyer himself. January 27. Just four months after announcing an overhaul in its structures the previously all-Jesuit board of trustees de- cides once again to expand its membership by inviting laymen from the community at large to participate in its deliberations. January 30. The long-awaited CAUT report on the Santhanam affair is released to the public recommending binding arbitra- tion in the case of nuclear physicist and threatening Loyola’s president and board of trustees with nation-wide censure if they do not agree to abide by the report’s findings. February 2. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada backs Loyola’s administration in its handling of the Santhanam contractual dispute and rejects the CAUT recom- mendation for binding arbitration. February 11. The college senate finally sets the composition of a task force to study the possibility of restructuring its mem- bership to make the body more representative of campus opinion. February 16. Loyola College seeks a declaratory judgment from the Quebec Superior Court to uphold its position that professor Santhanam had no legal right to be rehired by the college following termination of his contract. The court agrees Loyola’s stand is totally within the law. February 26. The second LMSA presidential election of the year gives Paul Lutfy and Dennis Mooney a 12-month mandate to head the executive of the student association. March 10. Professor Perry Meyer releases an 89-page report that 22 of the 29 professors appealing non-renewal of con- tracts be rehired and suggests wide-ranging proposals for the reorganization of Loyola’s internal governing structures. April 4. Meeting in Toronto the general council of CAUT offi- cially rejects a motion to censure Loyola College over its hand- ling of the Santhanam case pending implementation of certain structural reforms suggested in the Meyer report. The 55- member council also adopts a compromise settlement in the case of nuclear physicist, giving him a full year’s salary, appro- priate letters of recommendation from officials and full rein- bursement for legal expenses incurred by him during his 10- month long contractual dispute with Loyola. Dear Graduate of 1970: I congratulate you warmly on the successful completion of your course of studies at Loyola and wish you well in whatever lies before you. I hope you will take with you many happy memories of your undergraduate life here. These are difficult and uneasy times for all of us. The academic year 1969-1970 has been filled with tensions and unhappy incidents which have not been conducive to that calmness of mind so necessary to good study and fruitful teaching. There has been much talk of a power struggle and of the polerization of forces on the campus. Some good will emerge from this unrest, I am sure, but some harm has been done to the tradition of reasoned discourse and civilized behaviour which the outside world has come to expect of universities. In spite of all these drawbacks, I know that many of you have buckled down to the hard and lonely discipline of learning which should still be the basic aim of the student. I hope that you will carry with you into your next task - graduate work, professional training, business, teaching, public service - an ability to read with discrimination, to write with clarity, and to think without prejudice. If you have these skills and the particular knowledge of your chosen subject of profession, you are well equipped for the years ahead. The world of the Seventies will not be an easy one. Violence and unreason crop up everywhere. It is my fervent prayer that your years at Loyola will have given you a measure of knowledge, courage, respect for truth and for your fellow-man. Much has been given you and much will be expected of you. I know that you will measure up. Oe sincerely, y ¥ rs Spe on Patrick G. Malone, 5S.J., President. Acheson, Shelley, B.A. Hon. They believed they had the right to take away from one to give to another. The Indian was treated as a tenth class person, or was he considered a person. We’ve taken everything and given nothing. Where will this Child’s future lie? 155 Lily 1 ie Ley Sa - =f HIDDEN BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Innocence is beautiful, we protect our little ones. Yet we condemn the first man to settle our country. He is looked upon as an inanimate object, pushed aside to allow cobwebs to gather. If we think hard enough the Indian may disappear, or will our conscience forget what we have done to this man. 156 oe ES cede! OUR COUNTRY OUR CITY The Indian is given a choice, to remain an Indian or to become a full Canadian. He has to apply for citizenship. He who ruled the country before we knew it existed. The white man has all the modern con- veniences, the Indian has a dis- carded reservation, where he is left to die. ee ef WOULD YOU LIVE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS? No. Then why force an- other human to live where you wouldn’t. Will we allow the Cree, Micman and the Blackfeet’s history to fade in an onrush of technology. We have a choice, don’t deny the Indian their right to feel human. REVIEW ’70 Our sincere thanks to those who have made Review ’70 possible. They are: Paul Schibili, for the design of the new cover.
