“
If this s my day of harvest, in what fields have | sowed the seed, and in what unremembered seasons? If this indeed be the hour in which I lift up my lantern, it 1s not my flame that shall burn therein. Empty and dark shall I raise my lantern, And the guardian of the night shall fill it with oil and he shall light it also. KAHLIL GIBRAN WITHOUT If | do not see the moon tonight, Then | saw it last night. If | do not see the sun tomorrow, Then | saw it yesterday. If | cannot find my friends, Well | had them once. If the river is gone And the trees stand no more, They are still part of my mind And within me they live. So if | am the universe, Why do | feel this empty? They are gone. | am not. When | came, it was dark and my eyes could not see. But they told me it was not dark. This pained me. | was lost, and could not see if they laughed at me when | stumbled. could not see. could not share. could not laugh. could not live. | wept, inside, where they could not see me. And it grew darker. | called out to them, and wept openly. A flame within me caught hold and grew warm. The mist began to clear. Outstretched hands were there to grasp. But there were faces — laughing, weeping, staring... | was afraid. The hands were fading. | reached out and found my friends. And we could live. et | haieats ibdh. MONTREAL STAR “Loyola has been working hard to break down its Catholic image in recent years.” Little could one Terence Moore of The Montreal Star realize how much that one sentence of newsworthy, otherwise uncontro- versial article, would affect Loyola’s home front during one of the most turbulent periods of the past year. The context of the quote — a headline story in the final edition of The Star, Novem- ber 18, 1968, revealing plans for the proposed merger between Loyola and Sir George Wil- liams University. With lightning-like assurance, the legal advisor to the Board of Governors snapped off a “Letter to the Editor” reaffirming un- equivocally “out intent to remain Catholic”. The Star deemed the letter newsworthy enough to transform it into a news article, The battle began. The traditional moderate student group — we really don’t have any radicals — met with irate professors in the distinguished atmosphere of the Foyer in the administration building. They demanded to see President Malone. a Well, he was out of town. No, I mean, he really was out of town, so assistant Ralph Duder accepted the group’s petition — clarification on Loyola’s confes- sionality, and release of the up-til-then sacro- sanct statutes of the Board. The weekend passed... . Home again, the president issued a three- page statement, in absentia — Loyola is definitely Catholic (in many more words than that), the statutes will be released. “We want them now,” chanted dissatis- fied petitioners. Many tireless hours later, the president relented, and three copies of the statutes entered student, faculty, and senate hands. It didn’t end there, and who knows what’s ahead. David Allnutt By Brian McKenna Arms flexed and emotions frothing, some 200 Loyola students were hellbent on roasting visiting German student acti- vist Karl Wolff last night. In they rolled from the taverns, the manly violence of hockey practice, the cafeteria card games, the fraternity parties and other well-known centres of learning, to string this “dirty Commie radical fink” up by the thumbs. (“My God, look, he has long hair too!”’). The ones who came to chide and harass joined another 200 students and profes- sors who wanted to listen to Wolff, in Canada to raise funds for student courts trials in West Germany. His tour is sponsored by “Our Generation”, a monthly Montreal quarterly journal. Hearing about the planned pounce, and not ones to miss a good riot a few mem- bers of the Montreal Police Department cleverly disguised themselves as students, and slipped, oh so surreptitiously, into the audience. To add a bit of color, the walls were decorated with a handful of rent-a-guards from the campus security police, a poor, poor man’s riot squad. Loyola Students Let Off Steam As German Activist Speaks Out Into the pit walked Karl-Dietrich Wolff, 26 year old law student at the University of Frankfurt and president of the Ger- man Socialist Federation. “Boooo” welcomed his friends in the top rows. Hiss, jeer, the odd cheer and some solid applause completed the reac- tion. Wolff smiled. Quietly and easily he began to speak about the emergence of a new conscious- ness among German youth, it’s begin- nings as verbal protest that swung into organized student demonstrations across the nation. “Come on fellows,” screamed one of the guys, “we came here to talk about Sir George.” “Yeah,” eloquently howled another. “That’s telling him,” burped one more. “Tll come to that,” promised Wolff, as he went on to describe the grotesque emergence of neo-fascism in Germany and the student insurgence against it. “Talk about Sir George.” So he did. He told them they were upset because their God, property, had been violated. He wondered how upset they ever got about the eradication of human life. “We're against violence,” they shouted in chorus. 64 “I didn’t think you were really that upset,” retorted Wolff. “Many people have secret dreams about burning things anyway.” “I want to burn you,” shouted one of the boys against violence. “T have the matches,” hooted another. “The only thing that revolted me about Sir George was the students cheering the police,” said Wolff, “Whether you agree or disagree, the problems of the university will never be solved by calling in the police.” “Don’t fool yourself. If you had ex- pressed solidarity with the students inside, the police would have turned on you. “And if you had done that, the uni- versity would not have called in the police and there would have been no burning.” The roar from the top rows was not one of delight. “Yes, you're against violence,” con- tinued Wolff, “I heard you down at Sir George, You were screaming, ‘burn them, gas them, hang them’.” The Wolff was among the sheep. “Bahhh,” they retorted as half their number got up and headed for the door. EVERYBODYS GOT SOMETHING TO HIDE EXCEPT IME AND MY MONKEY 74 a hoyoita OFFICE Dear Graduate of 1969: During your undergraduate years, there was much, often agitated and emotional, talk about human commitment, the kind of world that the younger generation wants, the need for freedom, justice and peace. Almost certainly, you, yourself, at least in inner conversation with yourself, gave voice to thoughts and aspirations for the future of mankind and your personal role in shaping it. Now, as you graduate, you have fuller scope for action, commitment and responsibility. On campus, we often allow the fighting spirit of our idealism to spend itself in partisan pettiness against other people: left vs right, violence or non-violence, rage or reason, dialogue or destruction, and so on. As long as our activity is an expression of disrespect for those with whom we differ, of insanity, of our own narrow self-interests, we are not marching with the armies of progress, and we hinder the betterment that we proclaim for all men. Let me illustrate. Marxists and Catholics have, as they both admit, ultimately irreconcilable principles about man and society. And yet in the pursuit of man's progress, a leading French Communist could declare: “This dialogue has the double aim of aiding our struggle and of enrich- ing our doctrine by the assimilation of all that is valuable in the culture and life of others... The only certain guarantee that we shall keep our promises is to prove that our motives are not merely tactical, and that a different attitude would not only weaken us, but would impoverish our conception of the world.” And, on the opposite side, Karl Rahner, has written: ‘Must Christians and Marxist humanists be enemies? | think not; both dre more concerned with the future than the past. Why should they not plan their common future together—a future as yet unknown? Why should they not together seek to deepen their understanding of those things that we are all groping for: justice, liberty, human dignity, unity and diversity in society? In summary, men of all beliefs and no belief urge you and me, if we are to achieve some of the ideals that youth desires, to expand to the full our efforts at coopera- tion. Implicit in their urging is a call to dialogue which is impossible without respect for others, good-will, patience and an openness to change. To conclude—with a word of pride on your graduation and a vote in your promise —l fling two quick quotations: ‘My view has ever been to answer, not to suppress, what is erroneous —merely as a matter of expedience for the cause of truth... It seems to me a bad policy to suppress. Truth has a power of its own, which makes its way; it is stronger than error. “To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” Both are from John Henry Newman. It all began 100 years ago on December 8, 1869, when Timothy Eaton, a young man from Ballymena, Ireland, opened a small dry goods store in Toronto. The original staff consisted of two men, a woman and a boy. Today, during Eaton's Centennial Year, the staff now numbers more than 50,000 employees — and to date more than 11,000 Eatonians have given 25 years or more of service. In less than 100 years, Eaton’s has continually grown and expanded to become the largest retail organization in the country, and it’s still growing, still expanding, to serve better the people of Canada. New stores such as Eaton‘s Pointe Claire and Ville d’'Anjou have provided interesting new opportunities for many young people here in Montreal — and there’s more expansion planned for the near future. Wouldn't you like to be part of all this action? Wouldn’t you like a career with creative excitement, opportunity and challenge . . . a position where you can grow and advance in Canada’s dynamic retail industry.2 THEN THINK ABOUT EATON’S. We may be 100 years old but we still have a lot of young ideas! Why not visit Eaton’s Employment Office, Ninth Floor, Downtown, and discuss your career plans with us? 137 EATON 1869 +1969 J. ALL MY LOVE jane FACE TO FACE The vast immensity of the horizon Whose end shall never be found Is like a titan. A growing sun In whose troubles all is wound. How many times do we look at man As one or as a whole and see how he ran From the truth. Yet what is the truth Of which men speak? The truth of Book? It seems that way in this world of today When men hate — Hate But why How can they say love — love? then slay What are they looking for these men that cry For their loved ones: wives, husbands and babes Perhaps it's unity they crave. Like Abe's Inaugural address did tell of his hope; Man must want to live in peace not ‘Skip a Rope.” Thanks goes to Susan Shaw who put my thoughts in poetry.
