(I am a man, and nothing human is foreign to me.) -- Terence The gentle lovingkindness that IS Father Paul Chfford has, in the years he has been among us at Loyola Academy, kindled the flame of love and brotherly understandmg in the hearts of countless students. Three Hundred and One Years of Service This September five members of the Jesuit faculty at Loyola Academy will celebrate their fiftieth year in the Society of Jesus. Following the dictate of Scripture, Make Holy the Fiftieth Year, these five Jesuits will have a Mass of Thanksgiving and a reception on September the sixth for the Jesuits of Chicagoland. Later in September or October, another celebration will be held for their many friends. This will include a Mass and reception. A brief word about each of the Jubilarians: Rev. Paul C. Joehl, S. J., spent most of his Jesuit life as a missionary in India. He is now an assistant at St. Patrick ' s Church in Wadsworth, Illinois. Rev. Gerasime M. Legris, S. J., spent the last thirty-five years at Loyola Academy, at Lake Shore and in Wilmette. He has been active with the Fathers Club, the Alumni Asso- ciation and in teaching French. Rev. Richard T.Mailoy,S. J., came to Loyola Academy five years ago after many years in administrative work. Here he has taught Latin and he is at present a full-time counselor. Rev. Ara F. Walker, S.J., came to Loyola two years ago as an assistant to Rev. Robert Humbert, S. J., the Alumni Moderator. He has also been in administrative work. Many of the alumni remember Fr. Walker as a teaching scholastic and later as principal on Lake Shore. Rev. Edward T. Wiatrak, S. J., came to Loyola Academy fifteen years ago. He has taught here for many years. Last year. Rev Ignatius M. Burrill, S. J., celebrated his fiftieth anniversary in the So- ciety of Jesus. Since this fact was not mentioned in the ' 74 yearbook, we would Like to honor here his fifty-one years of devoted retreat work and teaching. AD MULTOS ANNOS S. The Ramblers, how- ever, did have their first taste of state competition, and the experience will be helpful to future teams. The graduating seniors will be hard to replace, supplying as they did the majority of punch to the line-up and steadiness to the defense. Seniors on the team were Mark Fahrenbach, (left field), Billy O ' Don- nell (centerfielder and lead off man), Chris Kendall, Bill (Arnie) Palmer (outfield), and Bill O ' Connor (catcher). O ' Donnell, Kendall, and Palmer were co- captains, with Bob Cooper serving as manager. This year ' s juniors were pitchers Rick Lisa and Jim Strick- land, first basemen Paul Clower and John Scholtes, infielder Steve Vandenbranden, and outfielder Mike Ouska. Sophomores were infielders Joe Davies, Fletch- er Jenkins, Larry McCarthy, pitchers Dave Finzer and Mike Mitchell, and outfielder Jim Maher. Chris Faggi, a pitcher, was the lone freshman on the team. The frosh-soph team also had a hot and cold sea- son. They compiled a 4 and 6 record, which included a four-game winning streak. Wally Versen and Kirk Tatge study game strategy Up for grabs is Mark Feiereisel Ed Condon attempts a steal Since too often teams are criticized for what they failed to do, it seems only proper to describe this year ' s varsity basketball team by outlining their accomplishments. Al- though the Ramblers opened the season with only one re- turning starter, Mark Feiereisel, they posted an enviable 7-4 Catholic League record, which was just one game away from last year ' s record with three experienced play- ers. Aside from playing in a toughly balanced Catholic League, Loyola ' s players were impressive against area powers as well. Although tournament records were not strong, play certainly was, since the Ramblers took top- ranked Evanston, Joliet Central, Urbana, and New Trier East to the wire in two overtimes and one loss at the buzz- er. Seniors Ray Carney, Tom Morrison, Ed Condon, Rich Wehman, Scott Feiereisel, and Joe Morrison contributed not only to the team ' s on-the-court success, but developed a spirit that will be difficult to duplicate in future years. Joining Scott Feiereisel, Condon, and Joe Morrison on the starting team were juniors Mark Daniel and Mark Feiereisel. Next year ' s squad can look forward to their return as well as that of Roy Brandys. Mark VanCalbergh displays his form To quote a popular television saying, the 1975 Varsity Bowling Team experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of de- fea t. The Varsity Team finished third in their division while the JV ' s finished a poor fourth. Although we did hold a 32-31 record, most of our losses were close ones, those being the hardest to take. The starting six on Varsity were Fred Metzger, Frank Moschiano, Rick Nierzwicki, Bob Tatara, Jerry Hicks, and Dan Stralka. The substitutes were Mike Aufmann, Chris Perille, Joe Donnelly, and John Underriner. The JV ' s relied on Ron Nierzwicki, Mark VanCal- bergh, Cliff Haggenjos, Jeff Ziegler, Chris Marcyzn, and John Hag- genjos. Joe Lamendello was the alternate. Our season came to a glorious end when the team placed third (out of 12 teams) in the Chicago Catholic League All-Star Games. Bob Tatara lead the team that day with a 597 series. Individual honors also went to Fred Metzger, Frank Moschiano, and Chris Marcyan. Intramural Bowling once again proved enjoyable with Fr. Dwyer scurrying about maintaining order on the lanes. Over sixty students participated in the weekly activity. While Bowling is not a sanc- tioned sport in the Catholic League, one can be sure that it is taken seriously by its members, just as if it were a sanctioned athletic ac- tivity. -Frank Moschiano Bob Goerge Bob Tatara goes for the 1 1-pin Dan Stralka making mid-game repairs OIr000 OInuntrfl Varsity, front row, left to right: Dennis Clohisy, Mike Kerns, Mike Jaskoski, Tim Wagoner, Bill Schultz, Willis Terry. This is due primarily to hard work and the dedication by the team members and Coach Jim Jackimiec. This was not expected to be one of the most prosperous years, but rather a rebuilding year since the team consisted of mostly Juniors. The Varsity and the Junior Varsity responded, however, by winning Catholic League Championships. Both teams posted identical 4-3 records in dual meets. This however was not totally indicative of the fine play that was turned in at each level. Bill Daddona, Jim Schumacher, and Joe Karlovich led the Var- sity to its great season. Bill Daddono was also medalist in the Cath- olic League Tournament. John Mannebach and Reini Hoerner con- tributed gready to the overall success of the Junior Varsity. Hope springs eternal for the upcoming squad as there are many Juniors returning and many fine Sophomore moving up to the Var- sity level. One of the world ' s fastest, most exciting, and most grueling sports is water polo. The Loyola Academy Water Polo Team, under the excellent coaching of the nationally respected Phil Stelnicki, posted one of the most impressive records in I.H.S.A. competition. This year ' s team had trouble finding goalies, especially in the deep end. This problem plus the fact that tlie team had only a short time in practice together hurt the player ' s drive to educate their opponents in defeat. This was borne out by the Aqua-Jocks ' five defeats by one goal including two losses to Oak Park. They also lost two games by two goals including one to Fenwick (which is the closest a team came to defeating the Friars this year). After taking fourth in the Mt. Carmel tournament, the team made a comeback. The Ramblers finished third in the Catholic League, first in their district, and fifth in state. Next year ' s team should do well. They will have two experienced goalies and many fine field players including Larry Nora, Glenn Furth, John Baker and Chip Burczak. During the fall the marching band delivered several excellent halftime shows for the football games, while the jazz band prepared for the second annual presentation of THE PRINCE OF PEACE. Among the surprises in tlie winter Pops Concert was Father Reinke ' s performance of his own composition on the piano. The Pops Concert, the biggest yet, played to a sellout crowd. The jazz band participated in both the Pops Concert and the Talent Revue. In spring the concert band played in contests against other local bands including that of Notre Dame High School. Loyola won a superior rating of nine. The band also sent a tape to a national contest. The jazz band became a musical comedy orchestra for THE MAN OF LA MANCHA. A group consisting of five Marillac and five Regina chics and a gal from Mother Guerin High School teamed up with seven Loyola Seniors and two juniors to keep the crowds alive through thick or thin, win or lose, rain or shine, sometimes even rain and snow. When all seemed hopeless for our Ramblers, the sound of FIRE UP would rise from this little group and soon spread through the entire crowd. The gang was under the direction of Mrs. Nixon who took a group of students and molded them into a talented group of Cheerlead- ers. Through hours of hard work, she found more cheers and stunts for the squad to perform. She even proved to be a good school nurse by giving expert treatment to the only two injuries inflicted all year, a bloody nose and a twisted neck. The girls also entertained the crowd during halftime with their Pom Pom routines that won them 3rd place in city competition. We would like to thank Mrs. Nixon for her many years of dedi- cated labor to the Cheerleading Squds at Loyola, and we hope more will join in the effort of cheering our Ramblers on to victory. -Dan Scapin Rich Mazanek ■■ ilg ' ' Julie Tavolacci, Kathy Madden, Mary Ann Kiefer, La Verne Casella, Chrisanne Westberg, and Judy Howart La Verne Casella and Chrisanne Westberg activate the student body OIi|Emi0trQ Club The Chemistry Club this year saw many changes. Induction into the IHSA brought a new and difficult challenge for the 1974-1975 forensics team. In a league which emphasized numbers of contestants, smaller teams like Loyola ' s had little chance of winning major tournaments. This was a new hurdle for the 1974 National Catholic Forensic League third-place finishers to overcome, but nonetheless many speakers gave stellar perfor- mances. Senior Pat Nugent was outstanding in Serious Dramatic Inter- pretation and captured first place in several tournaments, in addi- tion to his first-place finish in the IHSA districts, in which Loyola placed fifth. Other district qualifiers included Dave DeRose in Prose Reading and John Long in Humorous Dramatic Interpreta- tion. One of the major changes was that botli the Prep Weekly and Review were entirely produced by tlie students and printed in the Loyola Print Shop. This allowed the paper to be more up-to-date with news items, but it also limited the newspaper ' s staff ability to use better graphics. Although the paper ' s appearance fell somewhat short of the staffs expectations, the contents were greatly improved and the popularity of the paper increased. Numerous staff writers and regular feamres contributed to the Prep ' s success. Jimm wSmm Throughout the history of the modern world, a tension has per- sisted within the minds of men: the tension between the real and the ideal, that which is and that which ought to be, the confusion of this world and the next. The piece of literature which captured this tension most profoundly was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra ' s DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA. The most popular representa- tion of the Cervantes ' classic is MAN OF LA MANCHA, which was relived for five performances of the stage of Loyola Academy. The best description of the Loyola production of MAN OF LA MANCHA can be summed up in the term PERFECTION. Instru- mental in the achievement of this level of accomplishment was the persistent work of Fr. Larry Renter. From the actors ' performances to the set design, Loyola Academy ' s presentation of the spring mu- sical was a grand finale of a spectacular dramatic season. It was a time when tlie administration, faculty, and student body united to display the uniqueness of Loyola- both in curriculars and in extra-curriculars. The corridors were filled with perhaps the largest number of prospective students from Chicago-area grammar schools and their parents ever to attend a Loyola Open House. They were welcomed by Loyola student-volunteers who ushered them on a tour of the building and the exhibits. When the evening of Open House 1974 became the dawn of another day, a great number of prospective students and their par- ents had been given a glimpse into the diverse interests and pur- suits of a student body which blends in the melting pot of Loyola Academy. This institution of secondary education has firmly estab- lished a unique tradition in the modern world upon the decorum of the founding Jesuit order of educators. It can be concluded that Open House served to display a small portion of this unique tra- dition. -Charles Saulsberry Kevin Daly, Dave Summa, and Mr. Sendy demonstrate the Milii- kan experiment to a prospective student A tour of the ski club exhibit 193 iFEjgttual 0f tlje ArtH The third annual Festival of the Arts Week seemed even more effective than that of previous years. De- signed to stimulate creative and artistic qualities in a student, the Festival was well-planned and successful- ly executed. From the lunchtime dramatics to the combined Loyola-Regina Spring Concert, students ' en- thusiasm expressed their satisfaction. The week closed with a spectacular art fair, displayed by John Geis and his students in the Quadrangle. Beginning with mass by Fr. Reuter, the afternoon ' s attendance spoke for the success of the Festival. We look to next year for a continuation of this academic offshoot to enrich stu- dents ' comprehension of and appreciation for the fine arts. - Chad Sain Delightful entertainment was provided by the Three Stooges iHint-CourB Getting Higli were Jane Corrado. Attended also by the young ladies of Regina and held during the interim between semesters, mini-courses were designed to give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge in areas not provid- ed in the traditional curriculum. The Intersession Week was aimed at providing a restful yet learning-inspiring atmosphere during the interlude of semesters, prompting a unified Loyola community. The list of mini-courses was large in number and varied in con- tent. Courses were conducted in arts and crafts, in academic courses, and in sports. Truly the goals of this five-day period have been reached, for Mini-Course provided a relaxed and instructive atmosphere which contributed to a unified Loyola Community. -Charles R. Final- ly, ofcourse.it was the last day at Loyola Academy for 363 seniors. The Class of ' 75, outstanding for its spirit and sense of unity, will be missed around our haUs, but we pray that what each one of us has learned here may be retained and spread into other people ' s Uves.
