•s eH ALLEN COUNTY PUBLIC LIBR 3 1833 01763 6652 GENEALOBY W67 LA J DEDICATION We are both proud and delighted to dedicate this yearbook to dedication itself, summed up in the person of John T. Connelly. We have all seen him, talked with him, been amazed at his willingness to forego his time and even his meals to keep the Academy running smoothly. Perhaps he has seen or sensed the urgency and necessity of Catholic education in a manner not yet realized by most of us. Of this we are certain: words fall short of adequate description, and, Loyola just would not be the same without J.T. Connelly. IN MEMORIAM Charles Paul Adams Gary Brooks Kayiser Rev. Philip M. Close only counts in horseshoes; but if it had counted in baseball this season, our team might have been in the running for the championship that they won last year. Out of the nine losses suffered by the Ramblers, seven were by only one run in very low-scoring games. The opponents ' low scores were attributed mainly to the Catholic League ' s most valuable player, pitcher Charlie Leibrandt; while the Ramblers were victims of their own inexperience. Only si.x out of the twenty man squad were seniors; seven were freshmen and sophomores. Leibrandt and Pete Steger were the only seasoned pitchers, supported by rookie juniors Tim Cavenaugh and Mark Bednarz, along with freshman Dave Finzer. The catching chores fell to senior Dan Monckton and sophomores Paul Clower and Steve Smith. First base was covered by senior Pat Dollard, second base by junior Chris Kendall, third base by senior Gary Feiereisel, and they were ably backed up by junior Bill O ' Connor. Shortstop was shared by senior Jeff Gall and freshman Joe Davies. The outfield was patrolled by juniors Bill O ' Donnell, Bill Palmer, and sophomore Mike Ouska, relieved by senior John Yadgir, sophomore Bob Leibrandt, and freshman Mike Mitchell. Charlie Leibrandt, Gary Feiereisel, and Chris Kendall were honored by being selected by the coaches of the League to the All-Star Team for 1974. The six main starters were Rick Daly, Tom Arens, Dan Monckton, Gary Feiereisel, Charlie Leibrandt, and Mark Feiereisel. These cagers led the team to its twenty three wins. Although the team is losing five seniors, there will be no lack of quality in the upcoming squad. There will be a hard fight, though, since there are many fine players for the vacated positions. The 1973-74 Junior Varsity Basketball team was a winner from the start; and a winner at the end with a season record of 10-1. The team had great coaches in Richard Kehoe and Mark Seeberg. This was the first and last season the Catholic League had a sophomore basketball team, and I think our team represented Loyola excellently by winning the entire league. The team, did not have one specific outstanding player, but there were many individual efforts. Bob Leibrandt led the team in rebounds. Although he did not score many points, Bob led the team in spirit. Roy Brandys usually led the team in the scoring column by picking up points from the inside as well as from the out- side. A trio of guards often led the team to victory; they were Mark Daniel, Dale Welch, and Terry CuUen. Mark Daniel, one of the fastest men in the league, sparked the team on in defense and led the offensive attack with his agility and quick moves to the basket. Dale Welch was just as quick as Mark, and could shoot from any- where on the court. Terry Cullen, also a fine outside shooter, got the job done. Other key players were Donn Dack, Mike Cardwell, Jim Poole, and Dan Jagla. Even though this was the only season for this league. Loyola once again proved its excellence in sports. Stand- ing: Bob Tatara, Joe Mancuso, Coach Father Dwyer, Paul Frcyder, Fred Metzgcr. The Varsity Bowling Team of 1974 didn ' t fare too well. Although we did hold a .500 record, we couldn ' t stop our notorious rivals Gordon Tech and Mount Carmel. This year we were without Immortals Steve Izzo, Bob Nierzwicki, and Bob Morris, but we did gain seniors John Trippi and Marc Rita. Oh yes, who could forget senior Joe Mancuso! This year our Varsity Team was dominated by Juniors. The dynamic duo of Fred Metzger and Rick Nierzwicki were key factors in t!ie starting lineup, while Frank Moschiano, Chris Perille, Mitch Gilaty, and Bob Tatara were frequent alternates. Although our record was not impressive, it should be noted that the six juniors mentioned will most certainly prove to be outstanding next year, making the ' 75 season a very hopeful one indeed. The JV ' s likewise had an average season, but Freshmen Ron Nierzwicki, Mark VanCalbergh, and Cliff Haggenjos should lead next year ' s bowlers to victory. Other JV rollers were Jack Scanlan, Daniel Stralka, Chris Ripkey, and John Underriner. Finally, all of us wish to thank Father Dwyer who through- out the year has guided us to be fine bowlers, sportsmen, and students. : Frank Moschiano Frist row, left to right; Dan Stralka, August Durso. Wliat happened? After two undefeated seasons this year ' s team of Loyola harriers did not win the Chicago Catholic League Championship. Many explanations were proposed ranging from overpracticmg to overpartying, but the tradition of runners at Loyola which has been built by Coaches Amato, Morcili, Bueter, and Caccamo assures ns that lack of desire on the day of the meet was not the reason. Chances of coming back up the road do look bright with such sensations as frosh Les Beres, soph stars Barry Sullivan, Bob Connolly, and Tom Sanders, not to mention returning Most Valuable Runner John Williams. Captain Leroy Steinke and Pat O ' Coniicll, along with other seniors— Jim Rcichmann, Dave Williams, Mike Mullen, Pat Hinkamp, Steve Prang, Brian Barr, and Mike Byren— will not get another chance but they have all benefitted immeasurably from their Cross Country experiences at Loyola. At first, the coaches were very optimistic about the season since, for the first time in Loyola ' s history, five sophomores were in the starting lineup. The success of the season, or, the turning point happened when the Ramblers, down by two TD ' s at the half, come from behind in the last minutes of the game to beat Fenwick by a score of 21-14. With outstanding team morale and a paucityof injuries, Loyola finished its season with a 6-3 record. Because of a yearly event which most people call graduation, Loyola will be losing eight valuable seniors who played a total of twelve positions. Three of these men have received recognition. Mike Denten and Marty Gleason have been awarded All Catholic League honors, while Bill Cerney has been named a High School All American. Loyola has made for itself a rec ord which just like Tonka Trucks can never be broken. For thirteen consecutive years we have made the playoffs. The future, however, holds tougher competition with Loyola ' s entrance into the IHSA, but with promising team members like Hobie Murnane, Pat Hansen and center Ralph Gesualdo, we think we can beat just about anyone around, and are eagerly look- ing forward to next year. As captain and leading scorer, Mark Gantner led the team to many of its thirty five victories. Mark was also a Catholic League All-Star. Ed Sklodowski received Most Valuable Player and Mark Gantner received the Sportsman Award. Paul Freyder and Pat Hansen were recipients of the top Defensive Award. These four men also represented Loyola on its North Team in the annual North-South All Star Game. Next year Loyola will face sixteen teams, including two or three from Canada. Since Loyola is joining the IHSA, hockey will change its status from a team to a club, but we will still play Cathohc League teams. For the first time the soccer team entered into regular league play with four other schools in the Catholic league. Under the direction of coach Jack Knight and with the hard work of more than 30 team members the team wound up its season with three wins and four losses. The team also took third place in the end of the season tourna- ment. Next year looks much more promising for the team due to the fact that the more powerful teams graduated their first strings this year, while the Loyola team had only 3 seniors. So next year look for Loyola at the top for they still have plenty of talent, although they will miss the leadership of Sabinus Megwa, voted most valuable player, and Jack Cordell. This year the Loyola swim team ended up with a 3-4 record and finished third in the Chicago Catholic League Championships. At a glance it seems to have been a dis- appointing season but on the contrary, it was a very pro- ductive season. First, the members of the team had to adjust to their new coach, Terry Townsend, and secondly, the squad had only two seniors. Bob Osmanski and John Nora. Therefore we will have a strong senior team ne.xt year consisting of Tom Friel, Frank Fiduccia, Gregg Merci, John Nicolau, John Baker, Jim Hickey and Larry Nora. I beUeve that with hard work and good team spirit we will be very representative in the State Championship next year, says Coach Townsend. And I agree. With our move into the I.H.S.A., next year, we will get an opportunity to swim against more schools and will have better competi- tion in the State meet. The pre- season tournament at Mt. Carmel saw the Ramblers take fourth out of eight teams. The team was a young inex- perienced team. The season saw Loyola lose to Fenwick, Brother Rice and Mt. Carmel for a 3-2 conference record and a season record of lb-I5. The championship tournament saw the Ramblers in fourth place. The Ramblers worked long and hard to come this far. The teams first high point was the come from behind victory in the Brother Rice game. The Ramblers second high point was the double overtime sudden death victory over Mt. Carmel, 8-7. Loyola came in second place in the tournament and as a result of the mediocre season record, third place in the League. Fenwick took first place and Mt. Carmel took second. Loyola sponsored a post-season spring tournament which saw the team beat the IHSA Pubhc League state champions. The Ramblers top scorer this year was Tom Friel. Both Tom Friel and Frank Fiduccia made the consideration list for all conference honors. Shallow end goalie, Ron Golec, actually made all-conference along with deep end goalie, all-state player and M.V.P. of Loyola, Gary Cunningham. Although at the begin- ning of the season in November the squad had only two returning letter- men, the potential of the team looked quite good. However, many people were not as optimistic, in view of the fact that Loyola ' s new wrestling coach, Mr. James Giovannetti was inexperienced and so as a result everyone just watched and waited with anticipation. But not every- one just watched and waited, and one such person who took action was a young student teacher named Mr. Charles Rossetti. Mr. Rossetti ap- plied to become a teacher and assistant wrestling coach at Loyola Academy and would have been accepted on his fine wrestling reputa- tion alone but there were no openings for new teachers at that time. So he decided to assist Coach Giovannetti on his own time and as a result before the season was over Loyola ' s wrestling team, due to the joint effort of both of these dedicated men, lived up to its potential. The Varsity squad placed 7th in the Marquette Christmas Tournament with three 2nd place finishers, Sabinus Megwa, Bob Dreger and Brian Sobeck, and 5th in the Catholic League Championships. Those who placed in the Championships were Bob Dreger and Tim Powers, both taking 1st place. Matt Romano taking 3rd place and Jack Cordell taking a 4th place. Also during the season Loyola succeeded in beating Mendel, 23-22, for only the second time in 12 years. But these were not the only sur- prises of the 1973-74 season. The Frosh-Soph team also placed 5th in the Catholic League with Jack Heilingoetter taking a 1st, Mike Conti, and Steve Morrison taking 2nds, and Craig Fallico, Dave Ramos, and Frank Loranger all taking 4ths. Loyola was also the host of the Frosh Tourney for the second year in a row and Loyola did quite well. Bill Elliot and Kurt Hoffman pla ced 1st, Craig Fallico and Harold Sullivan took 2nds and Ted Ritsos and Frank Loranger all placed 3rd. After the season at the banquet the Frosh-Soph Coach ' s Award went to Kurt Hoffman, The Most Valuable Frosh-Soph to Jack Heilingoetter. The Varsity Coach ' s Award went to Tim Powers and The Most Valuable Varsity wrestler Award went to Bob Dreger. All in all, Loyola had a good season and with only 6 seniors leaving the outlook for next year, when Loyola will enter the IHSA, seems bright and optimistic. INTRAMURALS This year ' s intra-muial program, with ciiairman Sam Monoscalco and representatives on all levels, expanded itself in a vast number of sports to satisfy every student. Among the programs were punt-pass and kick contest, basketball, hockey and Softball. Though bad weather hindered the playing of the contest and Softball, the students went right in with basketball where a good number of students stayed for the three month period. At the conclusion the freshman destroyed the soph- omores and the juniors lucked by the seniors, (a bitter blow to all upperclassmen). In the two games both the frosh and junior teams showed superior shooting and ball-handling, though the senior and sophomore teams weren ' t bad. During the Easter break the hockey program was organized and started when school resumed. Some teams entered to play, others for fun. and still others for the fights. The fights are what made this program well-liked and well-attended. You can always tell good games from bad by the crowd ' s reactions. The program, though much improved, was still lacking referees and a gym much of the year: gym was revarnishing in December and January and many events in the gym (Tal-Vue and Ramble). But after long and brutal hours of scheduling and making rosters and refining and all that, the intra-mural committee has thanked everyone for their help and hopes they enjoyed it. ' :m BAND The Winter Band Concert. A mistake deserves the evil eye from Mr. Ken Bartosz. Frank Murphy and Mark Krawiec. Kevin Daly and his mighty cymbal crash. The Band began tlicir year, as always, with tlie maiehing band performing at football games. Many hours of patient practice go into the making of a half-time show. This includes many hours of practice during band class, early morning re- hearsals in the frigid cold, plus many hours of practice by the individual members at home. And, of course, we can ' t forget to mention the tireless work by Mr. Bartosz. After the season was over, all the band members were auditioned for the concert and symphonic bands. The first performance was the Pops concert performed in January. As usual, this was a great success, with an unforgettable finale of the 1812 Overture . The band also performed with the Glee Club in an April Concert, and three of the songs were taped for tiational com- petition. And speaking of contests, the band also played against Notre Dame High School in a contest and won with an out- standing performance. Jazz Band practiced and performed all this year to ensure a truly excellent band next year. The Jazz Band put on special performances of the jazz rock cantata Prince of Peace and provided fine entertainment between acts at TalVue. All in all, it was a very successful year for the band, and next year should be even better. They ' re losing a lot of talented seniors; but with some luck, there will be some just as talented incoming freshmen. Jmi Spector Fr. Burrill celebrates Mass with the Band. There was so much snow this winter, our transportation couldn ' t get us through to the slopes. With the e.xception of a few stalwarts like Dave Marconi in the picture, we have very little to show for our efforts. But just as there will always be sun and rain, so there will be more snow flakes. Next year we ' ll turn out a better page, hopefully. GLEE CLUB Tlie school year 1973-74 marked the fourth year that Mr. Martens has been director of the Loyola Academy Glee Club and Associate Band Director along with Mr. Ken Bartosz. Once again Mr. Martens hard work with the 23 singers has produced another prosperous year of concerts and productions. The Glee Club wasn ' t as active as in past years. However, they did produce two well organized Spring Concerts along with the big production of The Prince of Peace. The first spring concert was with Woodlands Academy and the second was with Regina Dominican. John McHugh entertains as a guest star at the Glee Club Concert. A professional photographer ' s services were enlisted and he passed on to the club many valuable pointers. Of course, the big curse on the Camera Club is its altogether inadequate and antiquated darkroom. With the race for space at the Academy, it is unlikely that our plight will be made better right away. But Fr. Reinke, Fr. Arimond, and Br. Bur, we love you still. Bob Campbell served as president, with Bob Tatara to assist him as vice-president. Room 86 was open to all every Tuesday and Thursday after school for both play and practice. A new rating system was established to rank the members on how well they played. Prizes were awarded at the end of the year to club members who participated frequently in various chess activities. Although the Chess Club did not compete in the Catholic High School Chess League, two successful tournaments were held here in Loyola during the fall and spring. Both teachers and students played. Trophies were awarded to the top finishers of the two tournaments. Next year ' s plans include Student-Faculty Chess Matches, more large Chess Tournaments, and competition with other High Schools. Sweeping all four tournaments, the team qualified seven members for the National Championships held in New Orleans. At the novice and junior varsity levels, interest and success rate continued high with hopes for continued excellence in the years to come. This was Loyola ' s first year back into the Debate Division of the Chicago Catholic Forensics League. For the season, our seven teams had an overall record of 30-40. John Quinley and Dan Fiduccia qualified as the second alternate team for the National Catholic Forensics League Championship Tournament. The team, coached by Mr. John Preas, Mr. Terry Brennan. and Mr. Sal Martmez, also competed in Wisconsin this year. Loyola also had six novice teams that had a season ' s record of 26-28. It was Christmas time when a group of people who were soph- omores were drafted for a task by a man then known as Mr. Stoeger. The task involved hanging a banner from the ceiling in the school chapel, but the difficult part was that the ceiling towered about thirty feet high. Since no ladders were about, it was concluded that the thirty foot scaffold would have to be brought to the chapel from the gym. As the dismantled scaffold was rolled down the hall by this group of people, someone searching for some kind of group identity decided to call it the Scaffolding Club, and from that day on the group was summoned by either Fr. Stoeger or Fr. Reuter whenever any scaffolding work had to be done in the chapel or gym. This year the club worked in the chapel during Christmas and Easter and in the gym for various social events. As the founding fathers of the club leave Loyola this year via graduation, we would like to wish continual success to its future and to give thanks to Fr. Reuter and Fr. Stoeger for their guidance. For over fifty years the National Honor Society has worked to bring the accomplishments of outstand- ing high school students to the atteniion of their classmates, their parents, their communities, and the colleges in which they plan to enroll. Election to the National Honor Society has come to be recognized as one of the more significant honors a high school stu- dent can receive. Membership in the society, however, is more than an honor - it carries with it a responsi- bility and an obligation to promote the qualities which are (he basis for election - leadership, character, scholarship and service. At Loyola Academy eligible students are invited to submit their qualifications, and they then are voted upon by members of the faculty with the afore- mentioned qualities the criteria for selection. Members of the National Honor Society contribute many services to Loyola Academy, most significant of which is the implementation of the tutoring program. Beginning with a new printing process, the REVIEW examined throughout the year such issues as Watergate, Senior Prom, Loyola Student Handbook and THE EXORCIST. Surveys were taken on Watergate and on activities at Loyola. Editorial assistance was provided by Dan Fiduccia, Reid Shaw and John Keating. Dave Burik, Greg Opelka, and Frank Santamarina consistently came through with articles. As for the PREP WEEKLY, Jim Hillsman and Mike Daly produced issues throughout the year, with their staff. A WEEKLY first was the Christmas locker contest. The format of the WEEKLY was also changed and included a more extensive use of photography. Mr. James J. Under the guidance of Mrs. Nixon (known to the cheerleaders as mom ), they cheered throughout the whole game or match whether win or lose. The cheerleaders consisted of six Marillac and five Regina girls. While the boys were nine seniors and four juniors. Besides cheering at games, the girls had a pom-pom squad which did different routines at half-times of football and basketball games. Several times our pom-pom squad and Marillac ' s pom- pom squad combined to give the crowd a double thrill. The squad even had the help of the Northwestern cheerleading squad so we would have that professional look. They showed us more elaborate mounts and jumps, helped on our cheers, and made us realize we are an organized group able to do any- thing. Student Council completed its second successful year under the new caucus system. The Council ' s work ran the gamut from the installation of a drinking facility in the cafeteria to the sensational Heartsfield concert. The usual social activities were planned and run well (films, coffee- houses, dances), as well as a special week of Homecoming festivities and an expanded intramural program. The efficiency and responsibility of the council was exemplified by their work with the administration, the Open House, and the planning of Mini-Course and Festival of the Arts weeks. This year, the council was characterized by concerned, questioning debate centering around social issues and problems of our time. The council moved beyond the realm of 1100 N. Laramie Ave. and the representatives ' concern spanned issues from the impeachment of President Nixon to work with the United Farmworker boycott. Work in conjunction with Sodality produced the most successful Food Drive in many years. CharHe Brown presented on October 26,27,28. The play, a musical, was directed by Ray Rayner of WGN-TV and is based on the characters of the Peanuts comic strip. The cast in- cluded Tom Schumacher as the depressed and inferior Charlie Brown, Chip Barry as the lovable and blanket-loving Linus, Jerry Murphy as everyone ' s favorite beagle. Snoopy, and Pat Nugent as the musically- inclindeSchroeder. Two girls from Reginaalso turned in magnificent performances in making Charlie Brown such a hit: Denise McGowan as Lucy and Bridget Hull as Patty. The play was superior in many ways-effective staging, lush lighting, a beautiful set, bright musical accompaniment and an even brighter crew of stage hands and props people. No one who saw it, whether a Peanuts fan or not, can forget the lunch bag over Charlie Brown ' s head; the Book Report; the nightly drama of the leaf; the red baron bit; the ' happiness finale. It was truly a great beginning to Loyola ' s fine arts program for 1973-1974. The Crew, top row, is Don Carlson, Chris Kelly, Greg Smith, and John Rotunno. It was the first major dance in several years that was held in the cafeteria. No one, however, seemed to mind. The tremendous job of decoration lended itself to a warm and friendly atmosphere. Great imagination and effort showed in the tremendous array of costumes displayed at the dance. During the course of the evening there were visits from Lfl Abner, the Pillsbury Dough Boy, Hagar the Horrible, a funeral procession and the devil (offering free possessions). Prizes were awarded for the most original costume, the costume which best illustrated the theme of the dance, etc. Ask anyone who attended and he ' ll agree-this year ' s Bal Masque was super! Every year, usually in October, Loyola Academy organizes an Open House for incoming freshmen and their families. The purpose of this evening is to give interested eighth grade students a chance to observe Loyola before deciding where to apply. An enormous contribution to the success of the Open House each year comes from the student body. To make sure that the interested parties see as many of the activities displayed as possible, ushers are needed to escort them throughout the school. These ushers are all students of Loyola. They are also needed to set up and operate the displays of the various activities of the school. These students, who volunteered their time in order to carry out an important facet of the Loyola year, deserve special thanks. John VVagener displays iiis stamps. For years now, Loyola Academy lias been producing spring musicals that shook the stage of Loyola, and one thai lit the faces of many people was the musical Hello Dolly. There has never been a play that gathered so many different people together for one specific purpose. That purpose was to put on a successful musical. Not enough people realize the satisfaction one gets from being in a play. The good feeling of meeting new friends, knowing you need them and most important knowing they need you. There has never been a play in which so many smiling people got together and created one BIG smile. The one person who was responsible for this smile was our own director, Fr. Reuter. Without him Loyola plays just wouldn ' t be plays. Fr. Reuter in not only a priest, but a friend as well. He is not only interested in putting on a play, but also tries to help stu- dents understand themselves and others. His interest in us, as stu- dents, is why we put on successful plays. Our productions aren ' t just for us, but also for Fr. Reuter. For the seniors, Hello Dolly was the last high school play, but we ' ll all have to agree it was the best. Sponsored by the Student Council the two groups teatured were HEARTS- FIELD and KRACKER. Heartsfield, the midwest ' s hottest top rock band, is a six man band which originated in the Chicago area over a year and a half ago. The group blends pure harmonies, sweet guitar playing and unique lyrics that solidify and enhance the groups total sound. Their debut album, Heartsfield won them nationwide fame. Kracker is a hard driving, rock and rollicking, five piece band. The group, which formed in Miami in 1971, was the back-up group for the Rolhng Stones during their European Tour. The over 1 ,000 people who sat in the gym that Friday night, seemed to thoroughly enjoy the concert. Special thanks should be given to the Student Council officers who worked hard to make the concert such a success. Kracker comes on strong. A side shot of Heartsfield ' s bass player. The crowd really loved the two different sounds they h eard that night. FOLK DAY The primary reason for the existence of Tlie American Folk Tradition was to bring great songs, performed by true artists, to students throughout Illinois. The concept of The American Folk Tradition solves the logistic and financial problems which prevent all but a handful of students from seeing, hearing, and questioning artists performing American folk music. Fred Holsteni, Art Thieme, and Ed Holstein came to Loyola to discuss and perform American folk music, the soul of our nation. The program was entertaining, but above all educational. Being American folk music, it could not help being both of engrossing and didactic value. It was simple, bold, realistic, and direct. The educators artists in this program are all professional performers oi ' traditional folk music. Their spectrum ranges from performance to instruction. They demonstrably have the gift to involve students. It is more than obvious that The American Folk Tradition was no concert. It is rather an instructive experience beyond the world of the classroom. In a serious mood, we betook ourselves to the Mass of the Holy Spirit one September morn. Our reason for going was to pray for a most serious intention: to see and to love the truth. Being trapped within their giant castle (the best centerpiece ever) they could only send the inquisitive to the music chairman and creator of the theme, Mike Hennig. Doc and John Fox dressing a volunteer ' s knee. The purpose of Loyola Academy ' s mini-course week is defined as; a concentrated, short term learning activity, usually related to a single concept or topic of study. The mini-course can take many forms. It can be a short unit, one facet of a traditional course, or the content need not be related to a traditional dis- cipline. The courses are built around various objectives-academic, non-academic, service, avocational, vocational and communica- tions. The coursescan be of varied length, ranging from two to three full days to a few hours a day for a week period. They can be offered in allotted times during school hours or in the evening. The aims of our program are : 1 ) To provide for students learning opportunities which are not provided in the traditional curriculum. 2) To provide pursuits of all kinds, inside and outside the confines of the school building. 3) To provide additional educational experi- ences that are relevant and meaningful to students. 4) To enable students to have access to qualified resource persons in the Ciiicago metropolitan area. 5) To allow students the opportunity to demon- strate that they can be responsible and accountable for a portion of their education. 6) To allow students to pursue interests without the pressure of grades and final examinations. 7) To allow instructors to teach courses in which they have a personal interest. Lastly, 8) To promote a unified Loyola community-students, teachers, counselors and administrators. Tom Gavin planning his strategy. Tlie Art Class was a big success. Tim Breen attempts a shot. STRETCH FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS Festival of the Arts was Loyola ' s second annual exploration into artistic expansion for its students and faculty. Many opportunities were made available both for artistic creativity and plain enjoyment. The 45 color and black white photos that comprise the 1973 Kodak National Scholastic Awards Photo Contest were put on display. Noontime events allowed everyone to learn about and get inside the world of art. drama, music, and film. Evening events featured performances by Loyola per- formance groups. And throughout the entire week, John Geis presided as our artist in residence. John, a Loyola alumnus and recent graduate from the University of Dayton, is the holder of a degree in Fine Arts. During the week, he taught and demonstrated such art forms as water colors, acrylics, and silk screening; John also exhibited many of his own works. A coordinated effort by all concerned helped to turn this into an exciting and in- formative diversion from everyday academic concerns. Our objective in recapitulating 1974 at Loyola Academy will hopefully serve as a reminiscent glance at Loyola during its various moments. The fabrication of YEAR ' 74 could not have been made possible if it were not for a handful of people. Under the editorship of myself and an assistant editor, Mike Garofalo, we were able to implement a few changes in this year ' s book. Modifications such as our revolutionary cover, candid faculty pictures, and creative division pages have hopefully enhanced this publication. Credit must also be given to junior editors and photographers Bill Sliwa and Rick Haas. Without their cooperation in providing us with essential pictures and needed assistance, all coordinated at- tempts in YEAR ' 74 would go unnoticed. 1 can truthfully say that this yearbook staff has received a great deal of satisfaction and gratification in providing all members of the Academy with a general review of the many facets which comprise Loyola. Jeff Jacobs Taking another one of their many breaks are Jakes, Carves, and Garo Mark Tryba in the middle of indexing. Hard at work are Rick Haas and Bill Sliwa???
