For sure, the voice that says Good Morning first for Loyola Academy is Mrs. Mitchell ' s. No one could represent us better. Over the years, Fidge has won the respect of all for receptionist ' s efficiency, friendly dealings on the phone or at the window, for her concern in help- ing to steer onto the right path the wandering student or teacher. We started our little paragraph with respect , but what we really meant was affection. Anyone as interested in us as Mrs. Mitchell deserves more than respect. To Mrs. Mitchell, we dedicate the 1973 Loyola Year. IN APPRECIATION He is man He is scholar He is priest He is producer He is director He is teacher He is counselor He is catalyst He is God resolved in man But above all He is friend Words cheapen thought, we are in appreciation of al l trades, the master of reality -our beloved Fr. to the jack Reuter. Though the basketball team ' s record was 13-12, it wasn ' t really reflective of our team at all. We were never out of a game. We com- peted against the best and held our own. Turnovers and mistakes, which hurt every young and inexperienced team, were certainly an important factor this year. The team was led this season by quick, agile, and all-league performer Jim Rebarchak. Others who played a big role in this year ' s team were defensive leader, Drew Nieman, Pat Sullivan, Mike Roache, and Ed Bresnahan. Three returning lettermen which should give Coach Gleason a fine nucleus to build from are Gary Feiereisel, with his rugged re- bounding, dead-eye shooter, Charlie Leibrandt, and quick-footed team captain, Dan Monckton. With some hard work next year, Loyola could get that championship they have been looking for. The lights with an almost entirely inexperienced crew played fine basketball and their 7-11 record surely doesn ' t tell the whole story. This team was filled with talent, but had something even more important and that was guts . They had more floor burns than any team I have ever seen. They worked hard to overcome their faults even when their playoff hopes were dead. They always gave 100%. If a championship was based on hard work and desire, we certainly would have had a Catholic League champ. The flys and bantams had losing seasons this year mainly due to the fact that the teams consisted mostly of talented but inex- perienced freshmen. They both have a lot of budding young stars and with a little hard work could turn those losing records into suc- cessful seasons. The Loyola Tennis Team, which is commonly known as Dwyer ' s Dynasty , kept on rolling this year and won their tenth consecutive Catholic League title. From the first tour- nament of the year at Brother Rice, where Loyola ran up the highest possible point total, the team proved to be the class of the league. During the Fall season the Tennis Team ran their record to 6-0 to be in first place in the league. In the play- offs they eliminated both B rother Rice and Fenwick to bring their winning streak up to an impressive thirty-two wins with- out a defeat. The 1 position on this year ' s team was often up for grabs between Juniors Mark Reiser and Peter Wallace. The play- off for this position next year should be a great one. The next three positions were filled by Captain Bob Sierks, and Jun- iors Mike Sierks and Jim Crumley. The doubles teams were made up of Seniors John Donahue and Mike Bubbles Nar- sete at the 1 spot, and Bill Fay and Freddy Foreman, who are both Juniors, playing 2. The 1972-73 wrestling team had its good times and bad, wins and losses, and ups and downs for everyone, but the season turned out to be the best one under Mr. Hal Harrison in his second year as head coach. Loyola started out right by winning its first nine dual meets and taking fourth in the Milwaukee Invitational. But soon the good times went bad as Mike Savone and John Amari were injured along with a number of minor injuries to other key grapplers. But when the championships came around bad returned to good. John Amari and Mike Hansen both took firsts, John Maloney and Mike Savone seconds, Tim Powers a third, and Ted Burke and Bob Dreger took fourths. John Amari received the M.V.P. award for the second time in the three years that Loyola has won the award. But Loyola came out better than expected by taking a fourth in the league. If you look at the season as a whole, it turned out very well. Probably the biggest surprise was the J.V. team. They came out of the championship with a third place and only one-half point be- hind second. Sabinus Megwa, Jack Cordell and Craig Boos took firsts, Tim Sullivan and Thomas Jung seconds, and Bill Bransley, Andy Annes, Rick Annes, and Ralph Gesualdo took thirds. -Jack Cordell Ted Burke brings his opponent to his knees John Amari in control Mike Hansen confronts his opponent Tim Powers tries to turn over his opponent Tirr Sullivan struggles to gain control The Loyola J. Every Fall Loyola Academy turns its attention to Football, but over the last two seasons Loyola has been making the other teams in the Catholic League fear us in Cross Country. This year the team was truly an outstanding model. Al- though there was room for doubt at the beginning of the sea- son with only three returning lettermen from the Champion- ship team of 1971, the Ramblers showed through hard work and determination that they too can be called Champions. The teams success was mirrored by the fine running of Captains Doug Smith and Kevin Barr. Doug Smith finished the season undefeated, with a second C.C.L. 1st place and the All- Chicago Championship. Kevin Barr, who only in his second season, was unbeaten by anyone in the League. He finished second in the C.C.L. Championships and also the All-Chicago Championship. With this one-two punch, the Ramblers would tire out their opponents. The running of Seniors; Bob O ' Brien, Tom Victorine, and Dave Notari, and Juniors; Leroy Steinke, Jim Reichmann and Pat O ' Connell would entirely overwhelm them. One reason for the two teams ' success was the bonus crop of good Junior Varsity runners from last year ' s J.V. Champs. The Ramblers look like they are going to continue their excellence because this year the Freshmen and Sophomores had some outstanding runners who will fill in the gap in the Varsity. With only three seniors playing regularly-John Mansfield, Tim Daly, and Ed O ' Malley and with Senior veteran Brian Janaes break- ing an ankle early in the season, the responsibility of carrying the team lay on the shoulders of inexperienced but willing players. The scoring leadership went to Tim Daly who also acted as Captain and team leader. The Junior line of Tim Anderson, Jim Pelty, and Mark Gantner should be a high scoring threat in the league next season. Also Jim Griffin, Dave Endres and Pat Hansen should be another good line and will add to our position in the league standings. This year our defensive group was led by John Mansfield, with John Fox and Paul Freyder adding assistance. Also, some late season improvement by Brian Griffin and Shawn O ' Grady should add greatly to our defensive game next year. Pat Palella and Ed O ' Malley shared goal-tending duties and considering the inexperience of the team, did relatively well. Next year I look for improvement in our goal-tending as Palella will be returning and other candidates will be trying out. The Catholic League was won by Mt. Carmel who also won the Playoffs, defeating runner-up Fenwick in two straight games. Loyola played in the State of Illinois Midget Championship and was eliminated in the third round by Evanston. We also played against several non-league teams, winning most games which shows how tough the league really is. With our returning veterans and the new additions 1 feel that Loyola will have a good team and represent Loyola in 1973-74 as a champion should. y thanks to those boys who made a consistent effort this season. The vacancies had to be filled, and they were. The Ramblers opened up their season against the highly touted Mendel Monarchs at Gately Stadium. Loyola ' s offense, which was questionable before the season started, struck four touchdowns the first two times they had the ball, with Bill Cerney and Mike Joyce providing the fireworks. The defense rose to the occasion several times through the remainder of the game to ward off the Mendel attack. The result, a 12-0 shutout. Although the young Ramblers passed this first test, many rough edges had to be smoothed. Loyola brought a 3-0 record into Sachs Field against arch- rival Gordon Tech and left the field after the game still unde- feated. (4-0) This victory, however, was hard earned. Gor- don scored first, but L.A. came back on a 60 yard, six play drive which saw Marty Gleason go in for the score. Mike Hansen ' s kick, as usual, was good. After a Mark Prikos inter- ception, Loyola moved to the Gordon 19 yard line and again Mike Hansen did his thing. He booted a 35 yard field goal to make the score 10-7. Gordon scored in the fourth quarter to HO ahead 14-10, but Loyola was not to be denied. Drew Nieman hit Hugh Benson on a 10 yard aerial to cap a 63 yard drive. With just a minute left in the game, Nieman scored on a 50 yard run to ice the cake, 23-14. fl 3l Jack O ' Donnell Marty Gleason splashes around a St. Rita defender Bill Cerney hurdles a tackier Drew Nieman is well protected as he relases the ball Jim O ' Brien makes a hole for Bob Falk Marty Gleason like Hansen puts the pressure on •■■ After a second-half victory against Weber, 34-14, Loyola sputtered and came up with two ties against St. Rita and Mount Carmel. But the Ramblers regained their composure and unity to whip Leo 41-16, amassing over 400 yards in total offense. Bob Falk was the offensive spark that day with three touchdowns on runs of 6, 51, and 65 yards. Loyola finished the season in first place in the Catholic league, with a record of 6-0-2, and appeared well ready for the playoffs. On a nice November day in beautiful Dyche Stadium, two powerhouses met to determine who would play for the Catholic League crown, and as it was expected it was a great game. Dwarfed in size, but not in heart, the Ramblers played a tough game; however misfortune struck too often and at critical times. After stopping a Brother Rice drive, Loyola drove to the Rice goal line, mixing passing with running, only to be stopped short of the end zone. Not giving its first mistake a second thought, the Ramblers once again marched the length of the field only to be stalled again when a pitch-out went astray. Rice scored in the first half to make it 6-0. Rice ' s physical strength was evident throughout the second half. True there has been an intra- mural program, but it has heretofore been uneventful with little structure. This year we hope to have competition not only in Base- ball, Football, and Basketball but also Volleyball, One on One Basketball, Wrestling and Boxing. Perhaps what it most needed was an intramural faculty of one or two coaches that set up a complete schedule for all four of the years. Congratulations to those who worked this year to overcome many frustrations. Next year hope- fully we will get even better. Things get a little rough under the boards. Crowds at this year ' s football games marvelled at the perfect execution of Director Bartosz ' s original and entertaining half-time shows by the sixty-five member band. Naturally a group of such great talent would be in great demand as is evidenced by appearances in the Veteran ' s Day Parade in Wilmette, the Right to Life Parade in downtown Chicago, and the St. Patrick ' s Day Parade down State Street. At the end of the football season several innovations were made in the concert band format. Every participant in the band program audi- tioned for a position in the Concert Wind Ensemble, Loyola ' s premiere performing band. Forty-five of the best musicians won chairs in this organization. Another new facet of the bands program occurred during the inter- session week when members of the Regina orchestra were invited to join the Concert Wind Ensemble in preparation for the upcoming con- cert. This, the second annual Pops Concert, proved to be a smashing success as more than one thousand people jammed the gym to hear both bands perform. For those music lovers who like to swing, the music department offered the Jazz Band-a favorite of those attending Tal Vue ' 73. This group, composed of twenty of the best musicians Loyola has to offer, added still one more feather to the hat of Kenneth Bartosz as it per- formed at this year ' s Homecoming Dance-to the overwhelming approv- al of all those present. Nineteen seventy-three can be regarded unequivocally as the most successful year yet for the music department. Graduation will take away several key members of the Concert Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band, but it is hoped that the spirit of co-operation generated during this past year will cause 1974 to be even more successful than was 1973. There was a total lack of organization, until Mr. Gier volunteered to be moderator of the club. This year was completely different. The club was reorganized so that all the members could use the facilities available. New equipment was purchased; equipment that was necessary, but until now impos- sible to get because lack of funds. One prime change contributing to its flourishing, was the student caucus system, binding the council together and making each and everyone work as a team. Example of its effi- ciency was seen in bringing Styx in concert to Loyola, making a most exciting event for the people who attended. Other achievements were providing all stu- dents with hit films each month, and giving numerous socials during the year. A note of special recognition should be given to President Tom Hillsman, through whose efforts, the council made its huge climb to great heights. We all could learn a lesson from this group, which worked in a co-ordinated manner and looked out for the benefit of others throughout the year. Pfann- kuche, the club has risen from the depths to become an important activity within the school. During the course of the year it sponsored five Student-Faculty Chess Matches and one large Student Chess Tournament. Meeting every two weeks, the club was both educational and informative as well as interesting and enjoyable. Members participated in a variety of activities from the basic labs for the general novice to complicated ex- periments, for the more seasoned chemists. Mr. Sendy, our moderator was an everpresent mentor whose sound advice and watchful eyes eliminated the chance of any budding, young Einstein blowing up the entire lab (creative genius knows no limits, you know). Since its formation, the Spanish Club ' s purpose has been twofold: one of providing tutoring for underclass- men and secondly of diffusing the Spanish culture among the students. So to tackle this job immediately, the club got a head start for the 1972-73 school year with a traditional Span- ish dinner in downtown Chicago. Among the achievements that followed, the club presented the largest, most vivid, and colorful display ever for the Open House. The main objective here was to show prospective students the new Spanish courses stressing conversation. However, the com- ing of the monthly El Boletin Espanol proved to be the highlight of the year, since it provided a medium for expansion of the club. This year ' s officers were: Jorge G. Labat, president, Ricardo L. Sotorno, secretary, and Timothy W. O ' Connor, treasurer. They and the rest of the members would like to thank the moderators Miss Bertha A. Hernandez, Mr. Hernan Llerena, and Mr. Gregorio J. Sanza for their help in making it another successful at the club. Jorge G. The elected were: Paul Tirschel, President; Gordon Dafnis, vice-President; and Rich Wiermanski, treasurer. The bike club grew out of a grass roots interest in cycling by both students and faculty. Its organization has thus been on an informal, functional basis, trips and meetings held when interest seemed to demand them and whenever immediate planning was necessary. After initial student interest seemed sufficient, the first bike trip was held on Sept. 25. About seventy students and faculty members made the twenty-five mile round trip from Loyola to Fort Sheridan. Two additional Sunday trips were made before home football games in October and November: one to Alexander Woods and the other to the animal refuge, Orphans of the Storm. In the spring the club planned longer trips to Wisconsin, on the Wisconsin Bikeway. Fifty-seven students were official members of the club in its first year at Loyola. Missing: Bill Sliwa. e, Mark Reiser, Mike Narsete, and Believe it or not this is a spring yearbook. That is it was planned to arrive on the final day of class in 1973. The question then arises What about Prom, Graduation, and other late activities? The solution comes in the form of a sixteen page supplement which will arrive in late August or early September. The production of this unique annual was carried out most diligently by Editor-in-Chief John Donahue, future editor Jeff Jacobs, and hard working, retiring moderator Fr. John Heim. Although a large staff was available at any time of great need, for the most part the old saying about too many cooks held very true. Things this year were actually very calm and normal com- pared to last year ' s antics. In fact the biggest happening was the division of the Year office and the discovery of new room- mates; of all people the Railroad Club. Work went along fairly smoothly even after our two hardest workers, Tom Hinkamp and John Schroeder, were transformed into John Hancock and Ben Franklin by the musical 1776. What would this article be if it did not mention Super-Jock? Mike Narsete? Better, yes, but also incomplete. Besides keeping the fioor clean, Narse always brightened up our drab office with his flashy letter sweater. Photography, the most important part of any yearbook, was well taken care of this year by Fr. Perhaps if there was a single event which captured the at- tention, curiosity, and eagerness of the masses it was this. Through its novelty and milieu of entertainment and fun it channelled the student ' s energy into a varied, creative learning experience. Naturally the most bizzare courses heralded the largest enrollment and many saw this week as a time to take school off through through either physical or mental means.
