Dedicating the Lennie Sachs Memorial Stadium. Four hundred and twenty-five years ago, a group of seven dedicated men founded a religious society in Paris, the Society of Jesus. The leader of this congregation was a man of tremendous talents, an orator who had the power to draw many to him, an educator who turned out many of the great- est minds of the Catholic Church, a soldier who possessed great abilities to organize and overcome obstacles. This man was St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. With the tremendous growth of the Society of Jesus, there have been other great men to follow in the path of Ignatius. It is to one of these men that this book is dedicated. The man - Rev. Michael I. English, S.J., President of Loyola Academy. As a soldier, speaker, teacher and executive, Fr. English resembles St. Ignatius. As a soldier Fr. English saw the North African and Italian campaigns during the Second World War. He preached retreats in Germany for fellow chaplains and taught in a school for chaplains. As a speaker Fr. English has established himself among the very best. We, the students of Loyola Academy, know well the warm direct approach of his sermons, that personal touch which seems to make each sentence have a single, personal meaning which can be applied only to oneself. As a teacher, Fr. English has held the positions of Pro- fessor of philosophy and theology at Loyola University and was appointed Regent of the Loyola University Medical School. As an executive, Fr. English faces the enormous task of placing Loyola Academy on a firm financial basis. With this man guiding each undertaking, there is an air of optimism about the new campus. This book is respectfully dedi- cated to the man who has come to lead Loyola in the 'l960's. Chatting with parents at the open house.
