The world needs more young men to lead the race into space, to measure the globe, to chart the seas, to split more of the atom, to forge the ultimate weapon, for peace or war. The world demands more young men who can work with the slide rule, who have a grasp of trigonometry and algebra, physics and chemistry, men to chop away at the unending frontiers and barriers of this 20th century. The Scientific Course supplies the men for these needs. The achievement comes in attaining the ex pected results. Senior Physics students spend two hours a week applying in lab what they have learned in class. '-mm 4 i MZME EQSQESESS iw ff' vinffzi 0-. '-avgpunriav, pa 'aa frcpi T139 Ku. The world is searching for young men who realize the prudent marriage of material and supernatural by living through Christ now, to live in Him later. The need to profit from Odysseus and Aeneas, Aquinas and Maritain, to End out how the molecular theory and Galileo affect us, to draw from Athens and Rome, the Gauls and Huns in order to mold a Hrmer Christian and Catholic is realized and answered by the Honors Course. unaxolic all I Si veavirrx. For the high school paper operates on the journalistic princ pl: of iindng, writing, and puhlishing, and circulating the news for the people it reaches. So the students that report for, edit, and puhlish the Loyola Prep work on this principle and, guided hy a moderator, take the news that makes up Loyola and gather it together in an eight page trifweekly puhlicatitzn But hack of the principle and tl'e hlueprints lie the fun and the work: the reams of dummy paper filled, rolls of typewriter rihhons inked dry, and the untold hours spent drawing up layouts, tracking down reporters, hagglfng with printer. But the time and toils spent find satisfaction in planning another issue, and another, and another. '4m. ?'f ' Q T X X QE? I can safely say I do not have all of them. One of them I possess more than most people. I freely ask the help of others. The Hrst unlucky ones to get the call were seven Loyola juniors fnow almost graduatesj who had worked closely with and learned much from last year's adviser Mr. D. R. Seliskar, S.j. To strengthen us amateurs Mr. Norm Koenig of King Puhlishing Co and Mr. Bill Hornkohl of Walinger Stud o joined up. Photographers and puhlishers filled in great gaps in our hook. At various times when I needed to see the work through anotheris eyes I asked the help of Mr. Steve Deuteh photographer and Sister Ann Pauline, OP. head of the art department at neighf horing Regina Dominican high school. In the case of these two creative spir'ts my asking was wonderf fully rewarded. For some of the sheer hard work of getting the thing on the road Fr. Edward Dowling, S.j. responded with many hours of photograph prof cessing. Mrs. Anne Sheridan handled the patron drive, typed the index, and proof read the galleys. Mr. john O'Callaghan, S.j. guided hoth the moderator and the hook through the printing plant, a task demanding much time and tact. I have spokf en a favorite phrase many times both out loud and to myself, Once more can't hurt. Thank you R. Dunn, S.j. . But now we are graduating. And graduates are always nostalf gie . . . it is their failing and yet their privilege. So in this memoir-writing mood we will take a look hack, over some of the highlights and lowlights of our last year at Loyola. The year hegan happily enough with the arrival of a fresh crop of seholasties and a draft of veteran priests. The faculty was expanding along with the enrollment. Father Dumbach would never have recognized the September 1958 edition of his little academy. We were on top of the world that opening day of class. There was the novelty of seeing every' one agaln, the confusion or woe in discovering our teachers for the coming months. But most of all, a senior looks back ' .gf ,- r ,, ' -,.- , cg ,J- , ,.. ,Q lil ,Y , I ,,.: 1, ' g g-537 9 fx . J my '37 , YW- --.,.,J-. ' . A-Y . g,..-f- wv ff we were seniors, wheels at last. We were the ruling class, ours the lounge. And then the homef work started to come. Withmaut a doubt, normalcy had set in. There came suddenly a sound from heaven as of a mighty wind coming, where they were sitting, alleluiag and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, speaking the wonderful works of God. We as a school sought the blessing of the Holy Spirit on the academic year with the annual votive Mass held September 19. Then we had the rest of the day free. A holiday felt good already. As ever, last fall meant football. Loyola had a mediocre season, but there were moments . . . a second half rally to beat Weber in an exciting game on September 28 . . . the chaotic caravan down Lake Shore Drive to the George game Octof ber 10. In France Charles de Gaulle was rallying the people around him for a sweep to power such as France had not seen since Napoleon. And while French politics began to regain an aura of respecf tability, Loyola seniors carried on their tradition of no politics. In an atmosphere devoid of cam' paigning, they elected class oilicers. Cn October 9, the bells of Rome tolled out their message to the world. Pius XII, the Pope of Peace, reigned no more. Here at Loyola we honored him with a requiem Mass, celebrated on the seventeenth by Academy President, Very Rev' erend J. Peter Buschmann, SJ. Then as the patriarch of Venice made his way to Rome and the See of Peter, Loyola Academy held its first invitational cross country meet in Wilniette. As the sympathetic PREP recorded it, Although the Rambler seven did not fare well the meet was a booming success. Flunking notices were in the mail and the iirst quarter was soon over and done with. An eventfpacked second quarter lost no time in getting started. We heard a story not long ago about the group of Cadillac dealers who got together to raffle off a Catholic parish. All of which serves to remind us of the Lennie Sachs dinner held November 12. lt seems Mr. Sachs coached victorif ous LA teams for about eighteen years back in the old days. So in 1958 the powers decided to honor Mr. Sachs with a memorial dinner, and incidentally ratlled off a Cadillac and raised some cash. The Lennie Sachs affair set oil a chain of holidays that lasted four days and celebrated every' thing from Veterans Day to Archbishop Mey'er's first High Mass as ordinary of the Chicago arch' diocese. Sandwichcd in between these days of free' doin was the Homecoming. And about all that can be said is that they did come home '... eventually. We came back from these holidays with but one thought in mind, the Thanksgiving festivities, which closed out the month of November. December got oif to a smashing start with an Atomic Energy program for the entire student body in the gym on the Hrst. A learned young man with a delightful Southern accent that brought down the house lectured and demonstrated various peaceful uses of the atomic power. Father Murray went down in oral tradition by addressing the stu' dent body with the aid of a microphone. Fortunate' ly or unfortunately, depending on what your name is, the microphone turned out to be a geiger counter. The following day, atomsfforfpeace splitting in their ears, two farffamed Honors Course seniors sat writing their papers for the Interscholastic Latin contest. Months later the whole province would know that Alex MacGregor and Enrique Arias had won for Loyola first place in this time' honored event. And even months after that the whole school would enjoy the holiday that our Latin scholars merited for us. The PREP made history in December too. The editors came out with a literary issue which they hope will become an annual undertaking, and perhaps even a separate publication some day. The annual renewal of that great old Loyola classic, the Derby Drive, was held during December. And Chrfstmas arrived early at the Academy - in fact, on December 15. That afternoon the mothers held their annual Christmas celebration. The fathers took over that same evening where the ladies had left off. Posterity failed to take notice of whether or not Mr. Bamberger served in his usual capacity of Santa Claus. W Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad before the face of the Lord, because he cometh. Yes, another Christmas at Loyola, And not so different from other Christmases at the Academy. The glee club and the sodality made the pilgrimage down to the Little Sisters of the Poor. There was a holy hour in the chapel New Year's Eve. just the same tra' ditions, but good traditions and a good Christmas. jimmy Hoifa was going to organize the New York City Police Force around holiday time. And some Academy students were prepping for the province exams. New York's finest began 1959 unorganized. Loyolals worst met the new year disorganized. But the exams came as they always will, and somehow most of us got through, as we usually do. But the memory of the senior instructor in classics who missed twentyftwo items on trying the Latin exam gives encouragement even at this late date. Retreats followed the exams. We looked for' ward to them, but were also glad when they were over. A bittersweet time. And what we are particuf larly bitter about is that the Redemptorists' nice dog out at Villa Redeemer bit us. Before we leave the subject of retreats, kudos to Mr. O'Callaghan, SJ., the itinerant beadle, for his efficient work in the Redemptorist refectory. The second semester brought foul weather with it. The streets were buried under the white stuff for a solid month and a half, and more often than not after that. Ah, the fond recollections of that period: stalled buses, snowedfin cars, motor vehicle impacts, mushing from the south side, Father Beall's smiling face at ten o'clock. February 10 was a special event. Chap from General Motors Corporation came out and gave a lecture on the progress of various industrial research programs. Very enjoyable except that no one past the tenth row heard anything but the explosion. We can't quite remember what exploded, but it was part of the act. There was a question period afterwards. However we didn't think it would be polite to ask our, How is that Federal anti-trust business regarding G.M. and DuPont coming? Not that we had to import our technicians. Hidden in the bosom of classical culture, a scientist and his cohorts pulled off an ambitious operation. During the last year the astronomy club, under the aegis of Mr. Judy, constructed a telescope. Ad astra, gentlemen. Remember man that thou art dust . . . It was an early Lent this year. Some of the seniors even gave up smoking for the duration. There were times we were able to breathe in the Lounge. Seniors had a pep talk from Father Murray on Ash Wednesday. Popular rumor debunked to the relief of all: caps and gowns would not be in- itiated for graduation this year. Traditional summer formals stay in. The kibosh was also ofiicially put on the Washington trip. Thirsty seniors wept and bore it. February was a great month for meetings. A career night was held on the twelfth and a junior powfwow on the sixteenth. The Tertian Fathers invaded on the twenty- seventh to conduct a day of Reparation. This was another step in making Loyola Sacred Heart con- scious. Mr. Carter spent the year guiding a new religious organization into stable position. His Men of the Sacred Heart firmly established themselves here, and have spread to other schools thanks to talks given by travelling President Ed Halle and helperfspeakers. The short month slammed out with the Drama Club providing a grand finale of three one act plays for the benefit of Patna missions. We are happy to report that they were a financial success THIS year. March was the month of the palm tree, for Hawaii followed Alaska into the Union to become the fiftieth state. And there was a gnashing of teeth among 49fstar flag makers. There was a gnashing of teeth March second toog that euphemism, the special report was due in the office. On the twentyffirst sodalists from the surf rounding city and countryside stormed Loyola for an oldffashioned camp-meeting. ExfEditor Chris Zacher used the day to his advantage to become the first Loyolan ever to get his girl on the cover of the PREP. Easter. The smoke flooded the Lounge again as the glorious feast of the Resurrection banished penitential purple. Christ yesterday and today, the Beginning and the End, Alpha and Omega. Spring 'saw a revival of athletics on campus. Senior veterans Bolan, Ahern and company helped drill the football squad. Some sixty candidates showed up for track. Father Conroy, SJ. and Mr. Kotowski SJ. put some new life into the great American wastetime, baseball. April was a wonderful month, chiefly because it was studded with fourfday weeks. Day off for the Latin contest, which coincided with the play, Father Rector's day, - we felt like MacDonald with Big Steel by the throat. Well honeybelle, Will Stockdale do sho' nuff live ag'in. Southern dialects in place, thanks to Kentuckyfbred moderator, the drama club put on a fullfscale production of NO TINIE FOR SER- GEANTS. Pat fno relationl Boyle did a laugh' getting job in the part of Will, sophomore Richard Larkin played Ben, Ed Cunningham, Sergeant King, and Jim O'Connell, Irvin. When you, dear reader, are a grumpy old man going back to your yearbook for a few memories, call up this picture: Alex Mac' Gregor arriving at dress rehearsal with shiny new crew cut and being cut from cast by Mr. O'Callagf han, SJ., also with shiny new crew cut. Une notable news flash came straight from the scholastics' recreation room: our one time PREP moderator and 'someftime censor Mr. William H. Shurr, SJ. will spend next year teaching in the juniorate at Milford. This assignment certainly is an honor for a scholastic. We wish him well. But now, in late April, with hours to spare before deadline, we must necessarily finish oif this semifconscientious calendar in the future tense. May's claim to fame lies in free days, the Tulip Trot, senior exams, and the Prom. june, blessed June, offers those glorious final days, the third for underclassmen, then graduation on the ninth for seniors. And so Loyola, the last farewell. Pete Shepherd LJ N W E S the class of nineteen-sixty takes over X . mmm?
