MATHEMATICS Distorted notions of Ignatius' educa- tional program would tend to de-empha- size mathematics and science. Ignatius, however, saw the true place of these disciplines in the scheme of education. A man must not only know the facts of history and experience the beauties of literature, he must train his mind to the precision and method of mathematics and science. In Algebra, the student begins to think without the aid of measuring stick and multiplication table as he progresses through the intricacies of algebraic fore rnulae and equations. Geometry presents a challenge - a challenge to think logically. Upon the meager foundation of a few fundamental definitions and axioms, the student him- self builds a whole new world of logic constructed of theorems and corollaries, proofs and conclusions. dem-M445 LAWS OF Tl'fl: TRIANGLE are brought to b by Geometry students foe Della Maria ar Iohn Crilly to solve the problem COIWPLEX EQUATIOHS becoriie easy for Alge bra student Torn Prucher ar: Mr Cor.r.ellj.' shown: him the heart of the problem,

RELIGION Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this rneans to save his soul These words form the principle and foundation of St. ltrnatius' Spiritual Exercises. and answer :Hans fundamental questions. Man was created not only to develop his natural faculties, but to be perfect to develop the powers of the whole man, soul and body. This was the cornpellina idea of lanatius' own apostolateg withf out this basis of reliaion, his plan of edue cation would be futile. S PHYSICAL SCIENCES The other things on the face ot the earth are created for man . . . hence, man is to make use of them . . . in the attainment of his end . . . These phrases from the principle and foundation ot the Spiritual Exercises show St. Ignatius' un- derstanding ot the place of the rest ot creation in relationship to man, Since creatures are to be used to help man attain his goal, it is only logical that man know and understand the nature and workings of the universe. This he does through the physical sciences. Today's gloritication of science to the neglect and almost exclusion ot God is a menace to those not well-grounded in the proper Christian attitude.
