IIIASS HISHIRY The Freshman Class of Loyall gathered 1n the hlgh school gymnaslum Th1s was S ptember 1950 We were entlrely lgnorant of anyth1ng and every thmg perta1n1ng to hlgh school customs and regulatlons S hool began that year w1th everyone busy gett1ng acqualnted w1th the new stu dents Some of these new students at Loyall were from Putney P1ne Mountaln Four mlle Bax er and Rosspo1nt as well as from other parts of the county and state Thus the graduatmg class of today began 1ts eventful Journey to sen1ordom The faculty cons1sted of Mr Luther Jones pr1nc1pal M1ss SJS16 Ann Parker S lence Mrs Coy Cvoforth Engllsh Mr May C1V1CS Mr Ralph Vor1s Math Mrs Llvlngston Home Econorrucs M1ss Erma Lovett L.1brar1an Mr Arch1e Peace Coach Mrs Gllley Engllsh Mr Ball shop M1ss Audrey Doak mus1c and Mr Powers commerce Though we were Freshmen and so 1gnorant of h1gh school affalrs many of the group began to take part 1n school act1v1t1es Annette F1echter became the accom pan1est for the glee clubs and cho1r Rosemary and Patty were elected B' team cheerleaders ln the band there were freshmen Davld Unthank Kenneth Smlth Annette Flechter Harold Nolan Joe Surgener J1ll Roaden and Renfro Mann1ng When school began 1n the autumn of 51 the Sophomores almed at a h1gher goal A few of the old class had fallen by the way but the1r places had been f1lled by new comers that proved to be just as loyal The faculty made the most changes th1s year than ever 1n the hlstory of Loyall school Mr Powell was our new prxnclpal Mrs Charles Steele replaced M1ss Lovatt as l1brar1an Mr Abraham came to teach commerce after Mr Powers moved to son Warf M1ss Hogan replaced M1ss Doak as muslc teacher A new teacher Mr McPeek band d1rector was added to the faculty The students soon became accustomed to these changes and 1n a short t1me were enJoy1ng all the new 1deas our new teachers presented The glrls of the class were 1nterested 1n the new sophomore boys and as for the boys that goes w1thout say1ng for what male ever saw a fa1r lady and turned h1s head? Strange as lt may seem the sophomores were becomlng very outstandlng 1n the school Many were 1D the band cho1r and several other orgamzatlons Of course some marr1ed some qu1t school and some moved away By the end of the year bad marks had been patched up and belleve lt or not ' the class was on the verge of becom1ng Junlors By th1s t1me the class had lost some of 1ts ch1ld1sh a1rs and became more dlg n1f1ed Our Junlor year proved to be a very happy one and many of our group were school leaders Our coach Mr Warf moved to Ashland and Mr Needham Saylor replaced h1m We also had a new secretary th1s year Mrs June Klrby who re placed Mrs Roy Shumate One of the most 1mpo1-tant thmgs that happened th1S year was the 1nstallat1on of a school lunchroom Th1s was made posslble through the cooperat1on of the K1wan1s Club and the P T A w1th the school author1t1es Mrs Clarence Cvoforth and Mrs Wm H Frost were the supervxsors School opened agam August 29 1953 The once lgnorant class were now d1g n1f1ed Q91 semors Everythmg was startmg off well Mr Eugene Spurlock had taken the place of Mr Ball our shop teacher and Mr Allen W1lls replaced Mr Ralph Vor1s our Math teacher Mr W1lls and Mrs Inez Lxvmgston were chosen as our class sponsors After a year of hard work and much planrung our dream of a semor trlp to Washlngton D C and New York C1ty actually happened Patty was st1ll a cheerleader and the team she 1nsp1red 1ncluded senxors Jerry W1lho1t Renfro Mannmg Ronald Saylor Ot1s W1ll1ams and Jerry Nolan The season was cl1maxed bythe crowmng of the athletxc Queen Semor Negon1a Howard 15 6 V . . . . . Annette Fiechter played the piano for many special occasions as well as accom- panied the choir and Jill Roaden, whose vocal solos were a part of so many pro- grams. In the Bible Club, Band Alpha Domo, Beta Club Choir and other organizations the sen1ors were well represented Goodness' What w1ll they do w1htout us next year' Corxnne McClurken represented us at Barbourville and Lexington in the oratorical contests Freda Sergent beat all the girls getting a husband and now her name is Doughty Annette F1echter was named for the Balfour Award and now her name is 1nscr1bed on the placque in the library alongside s1ster Peggy s by the wayj At the mountain Laurel Festival Loyall was well represented w1th Patty and Irene as attendants and Annette as PTIHCCSS And don't forget our Roberta Burroughs' She has made qu1te a reputation for her drawing and lettering On the whole the graduating class of this year has been a very f1ne one with prospects of a bright and happy future May we end this brief hlstory of our h1gh school years with a ' Thank You' to all the faculty and parents that have made it pos sible for us to have attended Loyall High School We also w1sh to thank the K1wan1s Club the P T A all the Churches 1n town the Loyall Merchants and everyone else who has supported the school in such a fine way and thereby made it possible for us to engov so many advantages The Senior Class MASS PIHIPHHIY The Chinaman seats himself at the small lacquer table lays as1de his p1pe of dreams and slowly and stealth11y reached for the mag1c wand A breath of untold fragrance brushes my cheek as he deftly waves the wand over the mystic sands Sands that will brlng the future before me that portray the trials of my friends and classmates that will br1ng me back after many dreary years of wander1ng to Loyall H1gh School and the scenes of my youth The Phosphorescent l1ght of the room begins to fade and a ball of burnished flame comes from the distance First a tiny flame gradually it comes nearer and nearer My soul seems to rise within me A courtroom appears in the flame Voices are raised in argument carefully I listened to the words of the lawyer Your Honor they should have a divorce I have known both the plaintiff and defendant s1nce their baby days The1r courtsh1p began 1n high school Even then they did quarrel As for their children they should be put 1n some school where they w1ll never hear arguments as to the merlts of basketball and the hxgher intellectual planes that practice on the p1ano brings Oh no your honor Jlmmy never did tell the truth He 1S Jerry's lawyer and I did not say that p1ano play1ng l1fted the mind I only said that basketball was not as cultural as music Your honor I object The witness spoke out of turn As for me telling the truth Patty Jean you know that I never s1de step from the Glory Road Each figure looked and sounded farruliar and who could they be but Jerry W1lho1t Patty Frost and Jimmy Nolan The courtroom fades and soon I see a lovely woman Ruth Bowman leading a child of three The child 1n a sweet voice asks Mama when will Papa Phil be h me? To wh1ch she answers Soon dear Ihope ' Faster and faster the scenes change I then saw as the owner of the largest motion picture firm in the Unlted States Dorothy Howard She had as her secre tary vice president and advisor Joann Irvxn Lois Epperson and Barbara Creech respectively I6 !
