OUR OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT D 1 the school ear of 1941 42, Dr John A Dotson, 1 connectgoggwith his disgertation with the Graduate School Of Pea body Teachers College, Iashville, Tennessee, made a study f Harlan County Schools Loyall High School was one of the schools studied Some of the things brought out in that study was the need for more opportunities for the students to develop their personalities and leadership traits as well as other social needs He discovered that 98 per cent of the students thought that they were hindered by lack of recreatlons 18 per cent needed subyects that were not in our curriculum The hatred for books and a desire to move from our community plus several other things that caused us to look and see if we could add to our pro gram and serve the needs of these students lith the need for certain things that were brought about by the war and our obligation to give cextain tralning for the pro spective soldiers and war production plants, we added and im proved our voc tional departments For a better understand1ng of the democratlc way of life for which we were fighting, we gave the students more experlence in living in a democracy, in ta ing part in war drives, and in current history discu sions to study our country at work Plans and the philosophy of the school was to develop each child as far as it was po ible For the student to get the three R's and the fundamental subjects of our educational system and at the same time to give him oppor tunities for his development in every way possible, was the goal of the faculty and students alike Personal and group conferences was used to find those needs and everything was done to give that work to the students At no time were the duties of the aculty turned over to the growth of the student The student was shown the need for the thing he was doing and he was made to feel a sense of responsi bility for his own growth The following pages will give you an idea of what we did in improving our opportunities for development' STUDLNT TLACHDR PLANNING STUDLNT R PONSIBILITY AND LYADDRSHIP DEV hOPihNT OF SP CIAL TALHNTS CURRICULUM UTIDI ING CO UNITY R SOURCES VOCAT ONAL RLCRUATION AND PHYSICAL LDUCKTION 3 . - , , n 5 o I . . g I .
