FRONT: Lucille Kline, Secretary. TUDE TEXEC TIVE BRA CH Among the new and varying activities of the Student Council was the more effective organization of the Executive Council, directed by Leonard Pratt, Presi- dent. This administrative body of the council worked under a secretary system where one person was as- signed to a job as opposed to the committee plan previously used. Other advancements made by the Council this year: a vast anti-litter campaign which included signs and catchy trash barrels for the halls, poster regulations which were organized through Art Club to keep high quality posters throughout the school, a more effi- cient exchange student program which included not only a student sponsored by Norrix, but next year's project of sending a Norris student abroad. A new school song was selected by the Council, and the Constitution was amended. This year's Council has strengthened the position and prestige of our student government and made it bet- ter than ever. The versatile orchestra has an apparently unlim- ited range of pieces which they play - from Se- lections from Camelot to a moving Bach selec- tion. The orchestra has played for Bye Bye Birdie, Diary of Anne Frankf, the Christmas Concert, and Baccalaureate. Their success is credited to their director, Mr. Martin Flavin. Members of the orchestra were screened at audi- tions before Mr, Flavin, who visited each Kalama- zoo junior high in search of prospective musicians. Mr. Donald Lukens and Mr. Charles Riker, coaches of the reserve team, made up some of the size by putting the team on a weight program including isometric con- tractions: This weight program and determination fac- tor brought victory to Norrix's team against St. Joseph and Dowagiac. NIGHT REMAIN CHAM For twenty two games, the Knights' charges with the bat and great defensive work brought the downfall of all opponents. This undefeated streak brought state-wide recognition. Norrix added the Big Five Trophy to its collection of honors and placed four members on the All-City Team: Dan Tessin, Bill LaDuke, Terry Lewis and Doug Brigham. Tom Bommersbach made second team shortstop and Tom Haynes received honorable mention for All-City. Dan Tessin, a sophomore, finished the year with a 5-1 pitching record and was one of the reasons for the team's success. Other members who didnit receive wide recognition were often the ones who kept morale high. The three year record of 29-6-1 reflects the desire and inspiration brought forth by Coach William Stuifbergen. 83 fabovel Terxy Lewis was the catcher who sparked the Knights to their fabulous record. fupper leftj Mike Bush, the veteran second baseman, let the team in clutch performances. fleftj Dan West was the utility iniielder who dis- played the intense desire present in all team members. The depth of his chargers was overpowering, and the closest team was thirty points behind. Making this record even more amazing, was the fact that Norrix finished last in 1962. Unbeaten in Conference dual meets, the Knights lost only to Central during the season. High points of the year were the new records set by this squad. Larry Snow broke the Conference record established in 1941 when he ran the mile in 4:33.8. Steve Metzger threw the shot 48 ft. 10x in. for a new record. The two-mile relay team broke its own record by seventeen seconds in the Portage relays to capture honors. West Carpenter Csee picture on page 85D high jumped 6 ft. 1M in., ran 21.3 in low hurdles and a 10.4 hundred- yard dash. The star who led this assault, Bill Kirk- patrick, played number one singles all three years and became one of Kalamazoo's top racqueteers. The past year has been one of fortune and misfortune. Although Norrix won the Big Five Trophy, in Battle Creek they lost the regional tournament by three-quarters of a point. Bill Kirkpatrick went on to the State Tournament but lost in the semi-Finals to the champion-to-be. IOR LOCK TO THE FUTURE After a year at Norrix, the class of '64 returned to Norrix with bright ideas of a junior year. Junior boys make their way into varsity sports. Junior girls take a hand in sophomore initiation to Pep Club, varsity cheerleading, and hold club ofhces. The big event of their year is the junior year is the Junior Prom. Dreaming of flowers and formals, girls work at paper drives, car washes, and other money making projects. Boys work too, knowing that if the money isn't raised, ticket prices will go up.
