Dorothy Walter Foreword We honor the past, live and work in the present in order that the future may hold in store for us happiness and prosperity-the two principal goals we are con- tinuously striving to attain. Whether we realize it or not, each day of our life is an important step in our preparation for adult life. Each day is a building block in the formation of a solid foundation upon which we will someday support ourselves and our families. Our high school days are especially important in this construction period, for most of us will go directly from L.A.C.S. into our life's work. Therefore we must leam to use our minds to the best advantage this year so we can apply ourselves after graduation. This book is meant to be a representation of the past year. We sincerely hope that this publication will prove enjoyable and satisfactory to you and that it will give you a source for recalling all of the happy days spent in preparation for your future. DAVIS . . . to Mr. Davis for all that he has done for our school and to Mrs. Davis for her gra- ciousness and understanding. Dedzbdlzbn It has been nearly thirteen years since you came to Lowville, Dr. Ford. During those years our school has changed from a Free Academy -to a Central School and from a small overcrowded building to a spacious and modern edifice. Your life here has been a parallel to this development. You came here as a mathematics teacher. Then you became Junior High School Principal and subsequently principal of both the Junior and Senior High Schools, and now District Principal. For your unseltish service to our school, we, the class of 1959, dedicate this Lowacadian to you, DR. KENNETH E. FORD, our District Principal and loyal friend, trusting that it may convey a part of our esteem and appreciation for your unfailing guidance and help during our four years in high school. 7 Mr Davis with the scrap book containing letters from friends. Leon A. Davis was bom on a farm in the Town of Litchfield, Herkimer County, N. Y. on May 25, 1892, the son of George and Lena Rising Davis who were descendants of early settlers in the Mohawk Valley. Mr. Davis graduated from West Winfield High School in 1912 and eamed his B.S. degree from Hamilton College, a member of the class of 1916. Postgraduate study in the fields of education and the administration of secondary schools was had by Mr. Davis at Syracuse and Cornell Universities. Following graduation from college Mr. Davis secured a position as teacher of science at Johnson City High School and continued in this position for two years. It was at this time that he married Miss Katherine Wheelock of West Winfield, N. Y., who at the time of her marriage on August 11, 1917, was a teacher in the Endicott High School. Mr. Davis' next assignments were in the field of school administration, accepting the principalships at Mexico Academy for the years 1918-19 and at Benton Hall Elementary School in Little Falls in 1920. Significant developments in education during Mr. Davis' tenure, in addition to two bulding programs, include the establishment of a vastly expanded cur- riculum affording instruction in the manual arts, agriculture, secretarial studies, and courses for adult education, as well as music, athletics and the traditional subjects. Mr. and Mrs. Davis are the parents of four children: George R., Jane E., Katherine W., the wife of Charles C. Potts, and Mary C. Davis. Organizations in which Mr. Davis is interested include Lowville Lodge 134, F.8zA.M., and he is a past member and president of the Lowville Kiwanis Club and past president of the Northem Zone of the New York State Teachers Association. Each student in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 nominates two girls. The yearbook editor counts the ballots and selects the ten highest. The students again vote to choose our queen and her attendant. The choice of the queen is kept secret by the editor and the advisors. The queen herself does not know at the time she has her picture taken whether she is the queen or the attendant. J Dr. Hodgson takes over from Dr. Ford his duties at his first faculty meeting. fanzbr-fenzbr fihgh Although the student of L.A.C.S. may find fault with the following groups, he realizes the necessity and importance of their guidance. In their attempt to do what is best for us they may seem miles short of their goal . . . but that is probably because we are too close to our problems to accept their solution. The fact is we must gripe and the following group is the most natural target. Although they are the object of our ire now, we shall soon forget such characteristic expressions as what a slave driver, boy, when Simon Legree gives assignments, he really piles it on' or what does she expect, miracles? These are typical phrases referring to the teacher's nightly burden of homework. However, when we graduate we will be able to view our present taskmasters in an entirely different light, for we will no longer be the 'fpoor over-burdened student. They will not seem like the unrelenting slave drivers as they now appear. We will then realize the truly great help they are to us in these years when experienced guidance is so greatly needed. 1' Row I-Mrs. Martha M. This year, the Library Club began its second year of volunteer service to the faculty and students of Lowville Academy and Central School. The fifty-five members had a work schedule which provided each of them with a variety of activities such as taking pass slips, checking out books, and helping Miss Glenn in general. Each member tried to serve at least two or three periods each week. These members are helpful and friendly to all who come to the library and find satisfaction in the service they render. Porter, advisor. Standing-Mr. Harold Stahl, advisor: Mr. Russell Shurtleff, advisor. Class Hilary Another class is about to emerge from old L.A.C.S. The class of '59 has struggled, laughed, worked, played, shouted, whispered, crammed, and slept its way through high school these last four years. These years, supposedly the best in our lives, will at any rate never be forgotten by any of us. September 1955 found us a class of one hundred twenty in a crowded school with new construction in progress. Our class officers were Bill O'Brien, president, Carolyn Sweredoski, vice-president, Mary Meda, secretary and Judy Gamham, treas- urer. Our class advisors were Miss Walter and Mr. Watkins. The same ollicers were reelected for the soph- omore year with the exception of Vince Nells who held the otlice of vice-president. Class advisors that year were Mr. Watkins and Mr. Shurtlelf. Our junior year we elected Duncan Famey, president, Mary Meda, vice-president, Liz Mattis, secretary, and Judy Garnham continued to hold the money. Mr. Shurtleff, Mrs. Nortz and Mr. Stahl were our advisors. Senior officers were Carolyn Sweredoski, presi- dent, Joyce Campany, vice-president, Ruby Wid- rick, secretary, and Jane Tabolt, treasurer. Class advisors were Mr. Shurtleff, Mr. Stahl and Mrs. Porter. Looking back we will always treasure the mem- ories of our days at L.A.C.S., and with deep grati- tude will remember the help and guidance given us by our teachers, advisors and other members of the school staff. Sports events, dances, parties, record hops, assemblies, meetings, exams, books, classes, study hall, lectures, faces, friends, trips, movies . . . the list of memories is endless. Thus ends a memorable chapter of our lives. ..-iQ-'-W--P--W - ' E...-. m,...-........ ig ..-U.-f.. LEWIS COUNTY'S LARGEST STORE Lowville, New York C0mP'ime fS EDWIN G.
